6. Challenging Behavior and Expulsion from Child Care: The Role of Mental Health Consultation

Abstract

Preschool children are being expelled from child care programs at an astonishing rate, often because of challenging behaviors such as aggression, tantrums, and noncompliance. Teachers say they need more training in how to manage these behaviors in child care settings. Early childhood mental health consultation (ECMHC) has been shown to build provider's capacity to better cope with challenging behavior. This article describes the lessons learned from interviews about 20 children receiving ECMHC who nonetheless exited their child care settings because of behavioral concerns. The authors outline the common characteristics of children at risk for expulsion, as well as the common characteristics of programs that may exacerbate challenging behaviors. A discussion of how ECMHC can help reduce the risk for expulsion is included along with a detailed list of specific strategies consultants recommended for use with teachers.

Abstract

The Naval Postgraduate School Small Robot Initiative is an ongoing effort to develop autonomous robotic platforms for military applications. The latest design in this series, a quadruped robot with a tail for stability and obstacle climbing, is currently under development in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University. Tail orientation as a function of robot platform attitude is tested for angle of bank climbs at 10 and 15 degrees. Data indicate that although the platform induced noise is significant, tail orientation can be successfully managed with proper PID feedback mechanisms, including tail position as a function of platform attitude. Gross control of the tail used as an assist for climbing is validated in this experiment. Abstract

Disasters, both man-made and natural, are a known cause of morbidity and mortality among vulnerable populations. The initial phase of public health response typically addresses immediate traumatic injury or death in the wake of a disaster. However, little is known about the magnitude and cost of subsequent nontraumatic injury and illness in disaster zones. Known as "the hidden epidemic," the incidence and epidemiology of disease and nonbattle injuries among military service members in deployed settings has been more extensively investigated and may serve as a proxy for the evaluation of civilian populations following natural disaster. Further, prior reports from the military setting may serve to inform the broader population on the ultimate burden of nontraumatic injury and illness in recent disasters, particularly as they relate to musculoskeletal health., Published in the Journal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances, v20 n1 p23-29, Spring 2011. Abstract

The Diagnostic Solution Assistant (DSA) provides diagnostics for space hardware and subsystems. Advanced Honewell ‘smart’ model-based technology performs the real-time fault detection, isolation and diagnostics. This model-based technology provides 24-hour access to the operational knowledge of the system experts. The complexity of the International Space Station (ISS) and other manned space vehicles requires that a full staff of ground based system diagnosis experts be trained and available at all times. Response to critical situations must be immediate no matter what time of the day or night. Installation of new systems plus normal staff turnover cause personnel to be in training constantly. Domain knowledge lost due to staff attrition may also never be regained. All of these factors lead to higher cost ground based flight system monitoring stations and sub-optimal efficiency. The Diagnostic Solution Assistant (DSA) provides a solution to these issues. The DSA can be deployed into the ISS Mission Control Center to enhance Flight Controller awareness and decision making. DSA can be utilized onboard the vehicle to enhance crew awareness and potentially offload the crew in time- or safety-critical situations. The DSA can be used to isolate and diagnose faults during flight preparation, thus reducing the overall vehicle turn-around time. In addition to having diagnostic capability, DSA is a tremendous requirements and operations knowledge capture tool that could streamline training for the flight controller and crew, and facilitate the rapid location of important information. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
