International audience; One type of internal erosion, identified as concentrated leak erosion, consists in loss of particles of soil along a preferential flow paths existing in hydraulic earthen work. To assess the vulnerability of soils to this phenomenon, and more generally to surface erosion, several experimental devices exist, among them the Hole Erosion Test. We investigate here the effect of several parameters depending on the nature of soil considered, on erosion characteristics. A comprehensive campaign was conducted on soil, varying clay content, coarse grain shape and degree of compaction. In agreement with previous results, it is shown that presence of clay allows a better resistance to erosion; in the same way, the denser the sample, the more resistant it is. Concerning the grains shape, the experiments show two results: samples with sub-rounded to rounded particles exhibit a better resistance concerning the critical shear stress, (i.e. the shear stress needed to initiate erosion), but when erosion begins, these samples are eroded faster than those with sub-angular to angular particles.; L’érosion de conduit se produit lorsqu’il y a départ de particules de sol le long d'un chemin d'écoulement préférentiel existant dans un ouvrage hydraulique. Pour évaluer la vulnérabilité des sols vis-à-vis de ce phénomène, et plus généralement à l’érosion de surface, plusieurs dispositifs expérimentaux de laboratoire existent, parmi lesquels le Hole Erosion Test. Nous étudions ici l'impact de plusieurs paramètres constitutifs du sol sur sa résistance à l’érosion, à l’aide d’une campagne expérimentale réalisée sur des sols de teneur en argile, forme des grains grossiers et taux de compactage variables. En accord avec des résultats antérieurs, il est montré que la présence d'argile confère une meilleure résistance à l'érosion ; de même, plus l'échantillon est dense, plus il est résistant. Concernant la forme des grains, les essais réalisés montrent deux résultats : d’une part, et contre intuitivement, les échantillons avec des particules sub-arrondies à arrondies présentent une meilleure résistance vis-à-vis de l’initiation de l’érosion, cependant, une fois l'érosion enclenchée, ces échantillons s’érodent plus rapidement que ceux ayant des particules de forme sub-angulaire à angulaire.

À la suite de la première campagne d’essais HET inter-laboratoires entre les 3 laboratoires GeophyConsult, Sol Solution et Irstea/Inrae (campagne 2018/2019), une deuxième campagne est réalisée. L’objectif est de resserrer l’écart des résultats entre les laboratoires, par limitation des variables de réalisation de l’essai.Le document présente et analyse les résultats des essais de comparaison de cette 2è campagne, réalisée entre 3 laboratoires détenteurs du banc d’essai Hole Erosion Test selon le modèle Irstea.

One of the outcomes was the development of a measuring device for the in-situ evaluation of surface erosion, together with the corresponding test protocols and subsequent analysis. It was possible to demonstrate that the lime-treated soil was 5 to 10 times more resistant to overflowing than natural untreated soil, with a maximum improvement in the most sensitive zones (crest and toe). The authors describe the results of the overflow trials on the full-scale levees, and their interpretation, as well as resulting recommendations from the project in terms of levee and small dam design, and a cost analysis.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]RIVAGE; International audience; Among different devices developed quite recently to quantify the resistance to erosion of a natural soil within the broader context of dyke safety, the most commonly used is probably the Jet Erosion Test (JET) in which a scouring crater is induced by impingement of an immersed water jet. A comprehensive experimental investigation on the jet erosion in the specific situation of a cohesionless granular material is presented here. The tests were performed combining special optical techniques allowing for an accurate measurement of the scouring onset and evolution inside an artificially translucent granular sample. The impinging jet hydrodynamics are also analysed empirically validating the use of a self-similar theoretical framework for the laminar round jet. The critical conditions at the onset of erosion appear to be best described by a dimensionless Shields number based on the inertial drag force created by the fluid flow on the eroded particles rather than on the pressure gradients around them. To conclude, a tentative empirical model for the maximal flow velocity initiating erosion at the bottom of the scoured crater is put forward and discussed in the light of some preliminary results.

In the field of earthworks, companies must offer technical solutions to reuse the materials located in the vicinity of the projects in order to limit the borrowing materials and unused soils deposits. Soil treatment may allow the reuse of these materials. This study was focused on four treatment products (kaolinite, bentonite, lime and cement) as well as their effects on the hydro-mechanical behavior and internal erosion resistance of a fine silt. An enhanced HET device was designed in the framework of this study to determine the internal erosion characteristics of treated soils especially with lime and cement. Beyond the characterization of treatment effects on short-term hydro-mechanical behavior of soils, the work of this study extends to the durability of treatment and the evolution of long-term hydro-mechanical behavior of treated soils subjected to drying-wetting cycles. This study of sustainability was carried out through a multi-scale approach based on laboratory study data on soil samples and field investigations on hydraulic structures made of treated soil. The study showed that hydraulic conditions variations can decrease the performance of treated soils. These degradations result on an increase in hydraulic conductivity, a decrease of the mechanical strength and also a reduction in the critical shear stress which expresses a decrease of the internal erosion resistance. The kinetic of performance loss depends to the nature of the treatment product and percentage used as well as the exposure level, the number and amplitude of the hydraulic variations. International audience; Lime treatment is a well-known earthwork technique, for soil improvement and stabilization. Its applications are mainly in road, railway, airport and platform construction. In addition, some positive experiences of lime treatment are related to solve erosion problems of dispersive and non-cohesive soil in hydraulic structures. Lhoist Group, a lime producer, recently launched a series of experimental programs to show the relevance of lime treated soils for earthen hydraulic structure construction or renovation. The paper focuses on the resistance of lime-treated soils vs internal erosion. For this purpose, Hole Erosion Test (HET) can be considered an efficient tool to assess piping flow erosion initiation and development parameters of a material, which are critical stress and erosion coefficient. The evolution of those parameters is followed with ageing time of several lime-treated materials, in parallel with mechanical properties and cohesion that develop thanks to mid to long-term actions of lime, so-called pozzolanic reactions

It becomes a problem when human activity causes it to occur much faster than under natural conditions. Soil erosion by water, wind and tillage affects both agriculture and the natural environment. Soil loss, and its associated impacts, is one of the most important of today's environmental problems. Soil erosion is a naturally occurring process that affects all landforms. In agriculture, soil erosion refers to the wearing away of a field's topsoil by the natural physical forces of water and wind or through forces associated with farming activities such as tillage. This problem can be a slow process that continues relatively unnoticed or can occur at an alarming rate, causing serious loss of topsoil. Soil compaction, low organic matter, loss of soil structure, poor internal drainage, and soil acidity problems are other serious soil degradation conditions that can accelerate the soil erosion process. Soil quality, structure, stability and texture can be affected by the loss of soil. The breakdown of aggregates and the removal of smaller particles or entire layers of soil or organic matter can weaken the structure and even change the texture. Textural changes can in turn affect the water-holding capacity of the soil, making it more susceptible to extreme conditions. Many dam ruptures events have occurred throughout the world, some of them were reported by Foster and al. [1]. Then main cause was piping phenomenon that occurred in the foundation soil or in the dam structure. Serviceability of hydraulic infrastructures needs considering vulnerability of soil to internal erosion under the action of a seepage flow, [2,3]. Understanding the underlying mechanisms and quantifying the effects of pertinent variables that affect this phenomenon is of great importance in order to prevent such catastrophes. In this work, the water erosion is modeled in the fluid/soil interface during the hole erosion test (HET). The Hole Erosion Test is commonly used to quantify the rate of piping erosion. The aim of this work is to predict the erosion of soil in the fluid/soil interface by using the Fluent package .This modeling makes it possible describing the effect of the flow on erosion in the interface fluid/soil by using the turbulence model equations, and predicts a non uniform erosion along the hole length unlike the usual one dimensional models or two dimensional models. In particular, the flow velocity is found to increase noticeably the erosion rate. Effects on the wall-shear stress resulting from varying flow velocity and applied hydraulic gradient are analyzed. Various parametric studies were performed and had shown that the three-dimensional modeling introduced in the present study showed that the erosion rate is not uniform along the pipe wall as observed experimentally after performing the standard hole erosion test. The aim of this study is to describe the biphasic turbulent flow at the origin of erosion taking place inside the porous soil sample by considering the influence of variation of the concentration of clay contained in the flowing fluid. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach is used to investigate the shear stress that develops at the water/soil interface and which represents the main mechanical action that causes surface erosion.

Erosion mechanisms are the main cause of hydraulic failure in embankments. Therefore, the resistance of soils to erosion must be quantified. To this hand, several devices are used such as the Jet Erosion Test (JET), whose model of interpretation is strongly empirical. The aim of this study is to determine the relevance of the interpretation model of the JET. For this purpose, a 2D Navier-Stokes numerical model of erosion of cohesive soils by a turbulent flow has been proposed. We first developed and implemented an interface movement model, whose input parameters are the erosion parameters found experimentally by JET test. Then, the scour depth evolutions obtained numerically for three JET test cases are compared to experimental data. Good agreement is obtained. A parametric study has also been conducted to validate the accuracy of the numerical results. These results contribute to the validation of the JET interpretation model. To extend its domain of application, we applied the numerical model to concentrated leak erosion during Hole Erosion Tests (HET). Three HET were modeled and, here again, our numerical results are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental results from the tests. An analysis of the erosion law and erosion parameters obtained with JET and HET was finally initiated. International audience; Interface erosion is one of the main phenomena in dams, dikes and their foundations which may increase their failure risk. In laboratories, the jet erosion test (JET) and the hole erosion test (HET) are commonly used for the evaluation of the sensibility of interface erosion of fine soils. The results are interpreted by two distinct methods that are valid for one test only. A new energy analysis of the tests is developed, relating the total eroded mass to the dissipated fluid energy, and a new erosion resistance index is proposed. Seven naturally occurring fine-grained soils, covering a large range of erodibility, are compacted with the Proctor protocol, and they are tested with the two devices. It was shown that by using the commonly used methods, the values of the erosion coefficient are systematically higher with the JET than with the HET and the HET critical shear stress is about fifty times higher than the JET critical shear stress. Thus, the relative soil classifications yielded by the two erodimeters are not exactly the same. Based on energy analysis, values of erosion resistance index are roughly the same for each tested soil with the two apparatuses and a single classification of soil erodibility is obtained.

Erosion Erosion processes are the major cause of failures in hydraulic earthworks such as levees and earth dams. They affect as well many structures including transport infrastructure embankments or foundations of bridge piers. Erosion phenomena are complex processes depending on multiple parameters. It is therefore essential to characterize them through direct measurements. Two principal mechanisms of erosion are generally distinguished on earthworks: internal erosion and overtopping. Dispersivity of the soil is also an important factor in these processes. The present work studies these phenomena using three experimental devices: the Hole Erosion Test (HET), which examines the enlargement of a circular channel simulating internal erosion (piping), the Mobile Jets Erosion Test (MoJET) that erodes the by jets perpendicularly to soil surface by analogy to surface erosion and the Enhanced Crumb Test (ECT) which quantifies the disintegration potential of a soil texture in the absence of mechanical loads. In the first part, we were interested in developing and improving these three experimental devices, their testing protocol and interpretation methods for a more relevant application on earthworks. Thus, for the HET, a new interpretation method independent of the hydraulic flow is proposed. The device has also been adapted to perform tests on undisturbed soil samples and the ranges of stresses have been extended to make the test applicable from highly sensitive sediments to highly resistant soils. The MoJET device was used to perform series of tests on problematic earthworks with a revised procedure. At last, the Crumb Test has been enhanced to perform quantitative monitoring of disaggregation of soil specimens in water and a protocol has been defined for conducting tests on reconstituted or undisturbed soil specimens. In the second part, the different test methods were applied to two practical studies. The first study focuses on the application of lime treatment to hydraulic earthworks. It has been found through series of tests in the laboratory and on experimental earthworks that the application of such treatment technique reduces significantly the sensitivity to erosion of soils. The second study examined the influence of water salinity (pore water or eroding/permeant water) on erosion and dispersion. The use of different tests led to discuss the influence of several parameters and characterize the behavior of soils in various aspects of erosion processes; Les processus érosifs constituent la cause majeure des ruptures des ouvrages hydrauliques comme les digues ou les barrages en terre. Ils touchent également de nombreux ouvrages comme les remblais d'infrastructure de transport ou les fondations de piles de ponts. Les phénomènes d'érosion sont des processus complexes qui dépendent de multiples paramètres. Il est donc indispensable de les caractériser au travers d'essais dédiés. Deux mécanismes principaux d'érosion sont généralement distingués sur les ouvrages linéaires en terre : l'érosion interne et la surverse. La dispersivité du sol est également un facteur important dans ces processus. Le présent travail étudie ces phénomènes à l'aide de trois dispositifs expérimentaux : l'essai d'érosion de trou (HET « Hole Erosion Test ») qui étudie l'agrandissement d'un canal circulaire par analogie à l'érosion interne (érosion de conduit), l'érodimètre à jets mobiles (MoJET « Mobile Jets Erosion Test ») qui érode la surface du sol par des jets perpendiculaires avec des analogies à l'érosion de surface et l'essai d'émiettage amélioré (ECT « Enhanced Crumb Test ») qui évalue le potentiel de désagrégation d'une texture de sol en absence de sollicitation mécanique. Dans une première partie, nous nous sommes intéressés à développer et améliorer ces trois dispositifs expérimentaux, leur protocole d'essai ainsi que leur interprétation pour une application plus pertinente sur les ouvrages. Ainsi, pour le HET, une nouvelle méthode d'interprétation indépendante de l'hydraulique de l'écoulement est proposée. Le dispositif a également été adapté pour réaliser des essais sur des éprouvettes peu perturbées et les plages de sollicitations ont été étendues pour rendre l'essai à la fois applicable sur des sols très résistants et sur des sédiments très sensibles à l'érosion. Le dispositif de MoJET a été utilisé pour effectuer des campagnes d'essais sur ouvrages pilotes avec un mode opératoire révisé. Enfin, le dispositif d'essai d'émiettage a été amélioré pour effectuer un suivi temporel quantitatif de la désagrégation du sol dans l'eau et un protocole a été défini pour la réalisation d'essais sur les sols reconstitués ou prélevés. Dans une seconde partie, les différentes méthodes d'expérimentation ont été appliquées sur deux études pratiques. La première étude porte sur l'utilisation de chaux pour traiter les sols utilisés dans les ouvrages hydrauliques. Nous montrons au travers de campagnes d'essais en laboratoire et sur ouvrages pilotes que l'utilisation d'un tel traitement diminue considérablement la sensibilité à l'érosion des sols traités. La seconde étude porte sur l'influence de la salinité de l'eau (environnante ou constitutive du sol) sur les phénomènes d'érosion et de dispersion. L'utilisation des différents essais a permis de discuter l'influence de plusieurs paramètres et de caractériser le comportement des sols face aux différents aspects des processus érosifs

International audience; Internal erosion by piping is one of the main causes responsible of accidents and failures of earth structures such as embankment dams and dykes. This phenomenon occurs when concentrated leak develop in pre-existing defects in the earth fill such cracks and micro fissures, discontinuities, hydraulic fracture, channels, roots and burrows. It involves the removal of soil particles from the subsurface of these defaults to an exit point, leading to the formation and the evolution of a continuous “pipe” between the upstream and the downstream side. A new experimental device has been developed to carry out hole erosion tests in laboratory in order to better understand the mechanism of internal erosion process of soil. A series of hole erosion tests were carried out under constant flow rate in order to quantify the critical shear stress (Tau_c) and the coefficient of piping erosion (ker) of soils. Parametric studies were conducted on Kaolinite and Hostun sand/Kaolinite mixture. The key parameters investigated in this study were effects of moisture content, compaction energy and percentage of fines. The experimental results show that these parameters play a key role on the erosion characteristics (Tau_c and ker). A numerical piping model has been developed from equations of diphasic flow with diffusion and the equation of jump with erosion to interpret the hole erosion tests.

The embankment component of linear infrastructure of transport can be submitted to exceptional climatic events generating a rise in water level. The passage of a flood is normally the cause of lateral erosion due to current affecting primarily the slope of embankments. We focus here especially on the consequences of the hydraulic load imposed on the embankment and also the overflow when the water level is beyond the crest, causing a gradual rupture induced by superficial or internal erosion. This study presents the characterization of the erosion and the dispersion of clayed soils. Firstly, the soil erosion has been studied by the Jet erosion test of LCPC. This type of test is used to characterize the susceptibility to erosion of different soil textures in both the laboratory and the field. Secondly, the study of the erosion phenomenon was conducted with the Hole Erosion Test, designed and developed at LCPC. For a variety of soil textures, the rate of erosion and critical shear stress at the soil-fluid interface is evaluated by using a semiempirical erosion law. This experimental study was supplemented by observations of the surface before and after erosion with an environmental scanning electron microscopy. Thirdly, the dispersion of soil has been studied by the crumb test. Improving the ASTM standard test in which the results are mainly qualitative allows us access to quantitative measurements. The zeta potential taken with zetameter is a complementary measure in the description of the dispersion. Finally, the comparison of different tests of erosion and dispersion was discussed, similar trends observed allow us to understand the erosion in a global comprehension.; Les ouvrages en terre des infrastructures linéaires de transport peuvent être sollicités par des évènements climatiques exceptionnels générant une élévation du niveau des eaux. Nous nous intéresserons ici plus particulièrement aux conséquences de la mise en charge des remblais voire de la surverse lorsque le niveaux des eaux dépasse les remblais, entraînant une rupture progressive causée par un phénomène d'érosion externe ou interne. Le présent travail étudie la caractérisation des processus du phénomène d'érosion et de dispersion des sols argileux. Premièrement, l'érosion du sol a été étudiée par le dispositif d'Erodimètre à Jets Mobiles (EJM) du Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (LCPC). Ce type d'essai permet de caractériser de manière simple la sensibilité à l'érosion de différentes textures de sol aussi bien au laboratoire que sur le terrain. Deuxièmement, cette étude a été poursuivie par des essais d'érosion de trou à l'aide d'un dispositif de « Hole Erosion Test » (HET), conçu et développé au LCPC. In fact, this chapter thoroughly analyses the “Hole Erosion Test”, which was carried out for hydraulic structures in the United States and Australia, and recently in France. Several laboratory tests show the influence on erosion parameters of the clay nature, of the soil water content and of its density. Finally, this chapter emphasizes the importance of the coefficient of erosion needed to evaluate the safety of hydraulic structures in relation to the risks of failure caused by pipe flow with erosion.
