Abstract

Thanks to the large bandwidth availability, millimeter and sub-millimeter wave systems are getting more attractive to be used in a wide range of applications, such as high-resolution radar or high-speed communications. In this contribution, a new lens antenna in-package solution is presented for the H-band (220320 GHz), including a wideband quartz-cavity leaky-wave feed combined with an air-bridge chip interconnect technology, based on spray coating and laser lithography. This interconnection acts as a wideband, low-loss transition between the GaAs front-end and the quartz antenna, avoiding the use of expensive waveguide split-blocks. An antenna prototype including the interconnect has been manufactured and characterized, validating the full-wave simulated results for the integrated H-band leaky-wave with aperture efficiency higher than 74% over 34% bandwidth, and radiation efficiency higher than 70% over 37% of bandwidth., Accepted author manuscript, Tera-Hertz Sensing, Electronics

Abstract

We have studied the temperature dependence of electroluminescence in superluminescent light emitting diode InGaN structures emitting light at 405 nm. Devices were fabricated in the “tilted ridge” geometry. We measured the superluminescence emission as a function of temperature from 263 to 295 K and observed a very pronounced power sensitivity with temperature. Simple modeling of the optical intensity reveals that the main temperature dependence is related to the spontaneous emission factor in the amplified spontaneous emission and the temperature dependence of gain is of secondary importance. This result strongly suggests the need for reducing nonradiative recombination in superluminescent devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Investigation of spectro-temporal characteristics of short-pulse generation from a violet-blue AlGaInN multi-section laser diode implemented in an external cavity is demonstrated. The front facet is coated with a single layer of anti-reflection coating, resulting in superluminescent diodes with a broad spectrum. The coated diode is placed in an external cavity in Littrow configuration for wavelength-tuning, and in Littman-Metcalf configuration for ultrashort pulse generation. We report on fundamental, harmonic, as well as hybrid mode locking. Compensating for the group velocity dispersion, we compress the pulse duration down to 2 ps, which is at the resolution limit of the streak camera. Mode locking and sub-ps pulse generation are hindered by the photon density-induced gain saturation, manifested as mode competition and mode clustering superimposed with mode locking. We show, that hybrid mode locking can suppress the mode competition successfully.

Abstract

We present spectroscopic applications of GaN-based laser diodes (LDs), fabricated and developed at the Institute of High Pressure Physics and its spin-off company TopGaN. LDs were manufactured using MOCVD technology. For spectroscopic applications we applied pulsed operated lasers generating the radiation in 395-430 nm spectral range reaching the power of 200 mW within the light pulses of 30-150 ns at the repetition rates of 10 kHz. These LDs were successfully applied to the detection of nitrogen dioxide in free atmosphere using cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS) sensor. Cw operated lasers generating within the spectral range of 385-420 nm and reaching powers up to 300 mW were adapted for atomic spectroscopy. Using external cavity tuning with diffraction grating in Littrow configuration, we obtained the stability of single mode generation better than 100 MHz within the periods of 30 minutes without any additional frequency stabilization feedback.
