Abstract

Background Care for infants born at 22–24 weeks’ gestation varies globally, with an increasing willingness to provide survival-focused (‘active’) care for infants born at 22 weeks’ gestation in recent years. This study aims to report changes in care for infants born at 22–24 weeks before and after the introduction of a statewide guideline for extreme prematurity (EP).Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including all live births at 22–24 weeks in tertiary perinatal centres from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2022 in Victoria, Australia. Medical records were reviewed to obtain antenatal history and perinatal outcomes. Data on in utero referral and transfer to tertiary perinatal centres were sourced from the statewide perinatal emergency retrieval service (Paediatric Infant Perinatal Emergency Retrieval, PIPER) database. Changes in PIPER referrals and transfers, survival-focused care and survival at 28 days preguideline and postguideline were assessed using logistic regression.Results Following the guideline, at 22 weeks’ gestation, there was an increase in referrals to PIPER and a 3.31 (95% CI 1.84 to 5.95) higher likelihood of in utero transfer to tertiary centres.Following the guideline, infants had a 6.67 (95% CI 1.40 to 31.72) higher likelihood of receiving survival-focused care at 22 weeks, and a 5.57 (95% CI 1.22 to 25.44) higher likelihood at 23 weeks. All 24-week live births received survival-focused care at birth. The 28-day survival for infants who received survival-focused care was unchanged preguideline and postguideline.Conclusion Following the publication of the EP guideline in Victoria, in utero referrals and transfers at 22 weeks’ gestation have increased, as has survival-focused management of inborn live births at 22–24 weeks.

Abstract

Blackpoll Warblers ( Setophaga striata ) have declined precipitously according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey, but that survey’s coverage of the boreal breeding range is limited. Migration monitoring offers an attractive tool for additional assessment because migrants from inaccessible portions of the breeding range are included in counts. However, for site-specific trends to be combined into regional or range-wide population trends, the breeding ground origin of the migrants counted at each site must be known. Blackpolls have a loop migration pattern in which spring and fall migrants follow different paths, but very little is known about population-specific routes within North America. We used stable hydrogen isotope assays of tail feathers ( δ 2 H f , 4th rectrix) and wing-length measurements from migration monitoring sites across Canada and the northeastern United States to broadly delineate breeding/natal origins of blackpolls captured at those sites. Blackpolls captured on spring migration in southern Ontario and western Quebec had characteristics expected of birds from breeding range west of the Great Lakes. These birds travel northward from the eastern Gulf of Mexico to Canada east of the Great Lakes before turning westward to reach their final destination between northwestern Ontario and eastern portions of the Northwest Territories. Many birds sampled at Great Lakes sites prior to 2010, but not thereafter, had δ 2 H f and wing-length characteristics expected of breeding range in eastern Canada, suggesting differential rates of population change among regions. Estimates of migratory connectivity indicated considerable mixing of populations from different portions of the breeding range during migration. Our results both corroborate and refine the known clockwise loop migration pattern, provide new insight into spring migration routes across North America, and provide a foundation for incorporating breeding ground origins into estimations of range-wide population trends based on standardized migration counts.

Abstract

Objective Neonatal encephalopathy remains a major cause of infant mortality and neurodevelopmental impairment. Infection may exacerbate brain injury and mitigate the effect of therapeutic hypothermia (TH). Additionally, infants with sepsis treated with TH may be at increased risk of adverse effects. This study aimed to review the clinical characteristics and outcomes for infants with sepsis treated with TH.Design and setting Retrospective cohort study of infants treated with TH within Australia and New Zealand.Patients 1522 infants treated with TH, including 38 with culture-positive sepsis from 2014 to 2018.Intervention Anonymised retrospective review of data from Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network. Infants with culture-positive sepsis within 48 hours were compared with those without sepsis.Main outcome measures Key outcomes include in-hospital mortality, intensive care support requirements and length of stay.Results Overall the rate of mortality was similar between the groups (13% vs 13%). Infants with sepsis received a higher rate of mechanical ventilation (89% vs 70%, p=0.01), high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (32% vs 13%, p=0.003) and inhaled nitric oxide for persistent pulmonary hypertension (38% vs 16%, p

9. Metaphors and Telescopes: The Reception of Emanuele Tesauro's Il Cannocchiale Aristotelico in Marvell's Poetry.

Abstract

This article argues that Emanuele Tesauro's treatise on wit, Il Cannocchiale Aristotelico (1654) influenced Andrew Marvell's Restoration satire 'The Last Instructions to a Painter'. It highlights a number of close correspondences between the engraved allegorical frontispiece of Tesauro's treatise and Marvell's final envoi 'To the King', which ironize the poem's claim that it only satirizes the king's courtiers. There are also affinities between Tesauro's and Marvell's development of imagery drawn from a Martial epigram at another pivotal moment in the 'The Last Instructions to a Painter', which reveal Marvell's keen sense of the shifting associations between poetic style, religion and Restoration politics. Marvell found in Il Cannocchiale Aristotelico , the essay argues, a discussion of the acuity of metaphor which meshed excitingly with his own previously developed practice, especially his interest in reflexive and optical imagery. The article canvasses some of the ways in which Il Cannocchiale Aristotelico may have influenced Marvell's later poetry, particularly in the use of 'laconic' wit, as he adapted to the poetic and political coteries of the Restoration. But it argues that 'The Last Instructions to a Painter"s notoriously baroque tribute to the Scottish Catholic soldier Archibald Douglas identifies Tesauro's theory of wit with counter-reformation aesthetics, and uses parody to negotiate an uncomfortable recognition of how Marvell's lyric poetry might be interpreted by Restoration readers. Abstract

SWITCH is a journal of new media art that has been published in an online-only format since 1995 by the CADRE Laboratory for New Media at San José State University (SJSU). The journal is distinctive in its commitment to presenting scholarship and criticism on new media art in a visual format that reflects and enhances its engagement with the subject. This approach, which includes the practice of redesigning the journal’s platform and visual presentation for each issue, raises significant challenges for the long-term preservation of the journal, as well as immediate issues related to indexing and discovery. This article describes the initial stages of a collaboration between the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and the CADRE Laboratory at SJSU to archive and index SWITCH and to host a copy of the journal on SJSU’s institutional repository, SJSU ScholarWorks. It will describe the process of harvesting the journal, share scripts used to extract metadata and modify files to address accessibility and encoding issues, and discuss an ongoing curricular project that engages CADRE students in the process of augmenting metadata for SWITCH articles. The process reflects the challenges of creating an authentic version of this journal that is also discoverable and citable within the broader scholarly communication environment. This effort is part of a growing multi-institutional project to archive the new media art community in the Bay Area in a 3D web exhibition format.

Abstract

Baseline corticosterone levels have been suggested to be an effective tool to assess and monitor the health status of individuals and populations of wild birds. However, measuring baseline corticosterone levels in the field is difficult because the capture protocol may affect rates of corticosterone secretion. In passerine birds, two methods of capture are widely used: (1) passive netting consisting of monitoring mist-nets frequently to check if a bird has been caught; and (2) target netting consisting of installing a conspecific decoy and/or playing a tape-recorded conspecific song in the vicinity of a mist-net until the territorial bird is captured. Our objective here was to determine whether these methods of capture are effective at achieving non-disturbed baseline corticosterone levels in American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla). We found that passive netting was associated with elevated corticosterone levels, suggesting that hanging in a net for several minutes activates the HPA axis and, thus, elicits an adreno-cortical stress response. In contrast, target netting was not associated with an increase in corticosterone levels, regardless of the length of time between when the target bird first approached the net and when it was captured. Therefore, we suggest that researchers interested in estimated baseline corticosterone in this species use target netting and not passive netting.

Abstract

The Gulf of Maine has long been recognized as a major stopover area for shorebirds in fall. Knowing how birds move within and beyond the region will be paramount to protecting threatened shorebird habitat. To determine stopover behavior during fall migration (2013–2017) in Maine, 180 (104 AHY, 76 HY) Semipalmated Sandpipers, Calidris pusilla, were tracked using VHF radiotelemetry and an extensive array of automated receivers (Motus Wildlife Tracking System). Birds tagged at three locations along the Maine coastline showed no effect of age class or stopover site on body condition (body mass, estimated fat mass) or stopover length (post-capture detection period). However, movement after departure varied greatly among sites. Few birds captured at the northern-most site (“Downeast,” n = 71), which had the greatest amount of mudflats and offshore roost sites and the least amount of human disturbance, were detected beyond the initial tagging location, suggesting that they, like birds in the Bay of Fundy just to the north, initiated trans-oceanic flights from that location. At the Downeast site, leaner birds remained significantly longer than fatter birds, suggesting that time of departure there depended on energy reserves, which would be critical for making extensive flights. In contrast, over half of the birds tagged further south (Popham Beach, n = 59; Rachel Carson NWR, n = 50) were later detected at coastal locations to the north (few) or to the south (most). Stopover period at these sites was independent of fat, suggesting that other factors (e.g., feeding/roosting site availability, human activity) influenced departure decisions. In Maine, Semipalmated Sandpipers, regardless of age, may move north (Downeast) or south (e.g., Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Long Island Sound) where the local topography, habitat characteristics (feeding/roosting sites), and/or lower human activity, may best enable them to initiate trans-oceanic flights to the wintering grounds. Future study should determine if variation in stopover behavior is population-specific and if population-segregation occurs in Maine. Use of automated VHF radiotelemetry has led to a greater understanding of stopover behavior and the degree of connectivity among stopover sites, which should be taken into account for conserving migratory bird habitat across broad spatial scales.
