Abstract

The legal regulation of plant protection products (Dir. 91/414/ EEC) is a bottleneck in the market introduction of new microbial biocontrol agents, plant extracts and pheromones. In contrast, invertebrate biocontrol agents (“beneficials”) are not registered at EU level. The EU-funded project REBECA suggested improvements to accelerate the regulation process and make it more cost-effective, without compromises to the level of safety. Representatives of all stakeholder groups participated in the REBECA workshops. The EU Commission and Member States are encouraged to improve the registration of biocontrol organisms, plant extracts and semiochemicals at EU and/or national level. En Finlande, la culture biologique du colza est importante depuis plus longtemps que chez nous. Après un démarrage difficile, les agriculteurs biologiques finlandais ont atteint une surface de près de 3000 hectares de colza. L’expérience finlandaise peut nous être précieuse surtout dans le domaine de la lutte contre le méligèthe et dans celui des sous-semis (semis de couverture). La Finlande cultive en bio 2000 à 3000 hectares de colza d’été depuis près de 10 ans. L’huile de colza pressée à froid du pays ne se vend pas seulement dans les magasins bio, mais aussi dans la plupart des supermarchés. Cela n’empêche pas la demande de dépasser l’offre, et les huileries prennent de nouveaux producteurs sous contrat.

Abstract

In Finnland gibt es schon länger einen nennenswerten Anbau von Bioraps als bei uns. Nach einigen Startschwierigkeiten sind Finnlands Biobäuerinnen und Biobauern bei einer Anbaufläche von gegen 3000 Hektaren angelangt. Lernen können wir aus der finnischen Erfahrung vor allem zu den Themen Rapsglanzkäfer und Untersaaten. Seit etwa 10 Jahren werden in Finnland jährlich 2000–3000 Hektaren Biosommerraps angebaut. Einheimisches kalt gepresstes Biorapsöl ist nicht nur in Bioläden, sondern auch in den meisten Supermärkten erhältlich. Auch in Finnland übersteigt die Nachfrage immer noch das Angebot; die Ölpressen nehmen zurzeit nur noch Bioproduzenten neu unter Vertrag.

Abstract

The environmental impacts of genetically modified crops is still a controversial issue in Europe. The overall risk assessment framework has recently been reinforced by the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA) and its implementation requires harmonized and efficient methodologies. The EU-funded research project AMIGA - Assessing and monitoring Impacts of Genetically modified plants on Agro-ecosystems - aims to address this issue, by providing a framework that establishes protection goals and baselines for European agro-ecosystems, improves knowledge on the potential long term environmental effects of genetically modified (GM) plants, tests the efficacy of the EFSA Guidance Document for the Environmental Risk Assessment, explores new strategies for post market monitoring, and provides a systematic analysis of economic aspects of Genetically Modified crops cultivation in the EU. Research focuses on ecological studies in different EU regions, the sustainability of GM crops is estimated by analysing the functional components of the agro-ecosystems and specific experimental protocols are being developed for this scope.

Abstract

"Biological agriculture" is a synonym for organic farming, but the term was developed independently from ‘biological control’. Therefore, it cannot be taken for granted that all methods of biological control are acceptable or even a first choice in organic farming. In this chapter, we explore the attitude of organic farming towards methods of biological control. Although organic farming has become popular during the last decade, organic farms are still a minority in all countries. Furthermore there is a lack of profound knowledge about the regulatory framework for organic farming (i.e. public regulations and private standards). Therefore, we will firstly give a brief introduction to organic farming.

More than 5000 introductions of about 2000 species of exotic arthropod agents for control of arthropod pests in 196 countries or islands during the past 120 years rarely have resulted in negative environmental effects. Yet, risks of environmental effects caused by releases of exotics are of growing concern. Twenty countries have implemented regulations for release of biological control agents. Soon, the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM3) will become the standard for all biological control introductions worldwide, but this standard does not provide methods by which to assess environmental risks. This review summarizes documented nontarget effects and discusses the development and application of comprehensive and quick-scan environmental risk assessment methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

One laboratory and three greenhouse experiments were conducted to study the pathogenicity and efficacy of Finnish isolates of entomopathogenic hyphemycetous fungi against cabbage root flies. In Petri dishes, exposure to 1.5 × 10[sup 10] spores of Metarhizium anisopliae per dish caused 40–50% mortality of undifferentiated second- and third-stage larvae of Delia floralis, and 1 × 10[sup 7] spores per dish caused 40–50% mortality of Delia radicum larvae. In one greenhouse test, 1 × 10[sup 8] and 1 × 10[sup 9] spores of M. anisopliae and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus reduced the root damage of head cabbage by 20–70% compared with untreated controls, although this was not accompanied by significant reductions in the number of pupae. Only M. anisopliae consistently grew out of larvae and pupae of D. floralis during incubation that followed their recovery from the soil at the end of an experiment testing different formulations of M. anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana, but the frequency of the latent infections of the pest by M. anisopliae was not associated with reduced severity of damage to seedlings of head cabbage. The efficacy ofPaecilomyces fumosoroseus(Wize) Brown & Smith,P. farinosus(Holm ex S. F. Gray) Brown & Smith,Beauveria bassiana(Balsamo) Vuillemin,Metarhizium anisopliae(Metschnikoff) Sorokin and an entomoparasitic nematode,Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev), against larvae and pupae of the apple fruit mothArgyresthia conjugella (Zell.) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae)was studied in field and laboratory experiments. All species of fungi and the nematode were highly pathogenic to larvae in Petri dishes. In soil, the pathogenicity ofB. bassianaandP. farinosusfor larvae decreased. Pupae inside cocoons were highly susceptible toP. fumosoroseus, but not toP. farinosusorB. bassiana. In the field experiment, treatment of soil with conidia ofP. fumosoroseusat a rate of 1×107conidia per cm2reduced the emergence of overwinteredA. conjugellaadults by 70.1% compared to untreated control soil.
