Research describing nondestructive evaluation by means of a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer is presented. The device uses sophisticated eddy current detection and successful tests on simulated aircraft parts are analysed.

Research was conducted to examine an automated system for aircraft rim inspection using a high temperature superconducting radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device gradiometer cooled by a Joule-Thomson cryocooler. The whole SQUID system was mounted on a robot and integrated in an automated wheel testing system. Tests were performed on aircraft wheels with known flaws. Results based on a comparison with a conventional measurement revealed that with the use of SQUID, smaller flaws are identifiable than with induction coils sensors.

Research was conducted to compare the performance of a commercial Joule-Thomson cooler and a single stage Pulse-Tube cooler used to operate one and the same high temperature radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) under comparable situations in shielded environments. Results show that the SQUID operated with both cryocoolers exhibited different characteristic disturbances.

Magnetometer and gradiometer Josephson junctions, crossovers and vias were successfully fabricated using nonaqueous Br-ethanol chemical etching. PrBa2Cu3O7-x thin films were employed as flux transformer junction insulation and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) junction barrier layers. Small inductance direct current SQUIDs were utilized for nondestructive evaluation applications requiring a high dynamic range.

A novel portable nitrogen cryostat design for moving high temperature superconducting quantum interference device operation is proposed. The resulting cryostat was able to function as a portable system for seven hours without refilling its reservoir with a mixture of gaseous and liquid nitrogen. The efficient operation of the cryostat as a moving magnetometer was demonstrated in an unshielded laboratory environment.

An eddy current system in conjunction with a high temperature superconductor superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) gradiometer was developed for detecting structural flaws in aircrafts. A KC 100 commercial Joule-Thomson cryocooler was used with the SQUID. Orientation independent noise spectra was observed in both shielded and unshielded environments. The improved integration approach resulted in significant reductions in motion-related noise.

A mesoscale experiment was conducted in the Ross Sea near the shelf break in summer 1997-98 within the framework of the activities of the CLIMA Project of the Italian National Program for Antarctic Research (PNRA), focus on study the shelf-slope interaction between the shelf waters and the CDW in correspondence of the Antarctic Slope Front. This paper deals with the dissolved oxygen distribution and with the application of conservative tracers NO and PO related to the physical variables, improving understanding of mixing processes study in correspondence of the shelf break. Experimental data showed the presence of both Ice Shelf Water overflowing the shelf and Circumpolar Deep Water intruding onto the shelf. Dissolved Oxygen (DO), NO and PO resulted useful as chemical tracers in outlining the mixing processes and bottom water formation spreading off continental shelf break of the Ross Sea, in which seems to be evidence that ISW plays an important role. In fact, a plume of ISW was observed flowing down the continental slope to the deep ocean. From chemical tracers we estimate its magnitude to be about 0.4 ± 0.2 Sv. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
