1. Five pillars: A framework for transforming the police response to rape and sexual assault

Abstract

The ‘justice gap’ for cases of rape and sexual assault is well-documented. Despite our rich understanding of the problem, its visibility in the public sphere, and state commitments to increasing charge and conviction rates, the justice gap is getting larger in the Western World. On a practical level, police are gatekeepers of outcome justice – arrests, charges, and convictions. As representatives of the state and society, police also wield significant symbolic power in defining the faultline between behaviour that is deemed ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. In this article we propose a theory-based and practice-oriented framework for transforming the police response to rape and sexual assault that draws on the large body of feminist literature on sexual violence and criminal justice responses, in combination with policing literature. This framework comprises five pillars: 1) suspect-focused investigations; 2) disrupting repeat offenders; 3) a procedural justice approach to victim-survivor engagement; 4) officer learning, wellbeing, and organisational change; and 5) the use of data. We conclude with a discussion of its practical implementation and empirical validation.

Abstract

The needs of teachers for high-demand and seasonal films have been met by a cooperative effort of the Berks County Educational Television Committee, local school districts, the Berks and Suburban TV cable companies and the Berks County Intermediate Unit in a project called Operation Cooperation. Regionalization of the instructional media services had made existing instructional materials available to many teachers, and by using television as a delivery system, an efficient method of distribution was employed. The results of this cooperation provided greater availability of software to schools without additional investment. (HAB)

Abstract

Nintedanib and pirfenidone are approved treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). This open-label, two-group trial investigated the pharmacokinetic drug–drug interaction between these two drugs in patients with IPF. Subjects not treated with antifibrotics at screening (group 1, n=20) received a single nintedanib dose (150 mg) followed by pirfenidone (titrated to 801 mg thrice daily) for 3 weeks, with a further single nintedanib dose (150 mg) on the last day (day 23). Subjects treated with pirfenidone at screening (group 2, n=17) continued to receive pirfenidone alone (801 mg thrice daily) for 7 days, then co-administered with nintedanib (150 mg twice daily) for a further 7 days, before single doses of both treatments on day 16. In group 1, adjusted geometric mean (gMean) ratios (with/without pirfenidone) were 88.6% and 80.6% for nintedanib area under the plasma concentration–time curve (AUC) and maximum plasma concentration (Cmax), respectively. In group 2, gMean ratios (with/without nintedanib) were 97.2% and 99.5% for pirfenidone AUC and Cmax, respectively. For all parameters, the 90% confidence intervals included 100%, suggesting similar exposure for administration alone and when co-administered. Both treatments were well tolerated. These data indicate there is no relevant pharmacokinetic drug–drug interaction between nintedanib and pirfenidone when co-administered in IPF patients.

18. European public perceptions of food risk: Cross-national and Methodological Comparisons

Abstract

This article presents a comparative study of public perceptions of food risk across 25 European member states. A secondary data analysis is conducted on a Eurobarometer survey fielded to nationally representative samples in 2005. The survey included closed questions as well as free associations to map risk perceptions. Taking a quantitative approach, we find that people in a majority of European countries express similar levels of concern about food risks. However, outside this majority a North-South divide is evident, with the Northern countries worrying less than the Southern countries. Multilevel modeling shows that cross-national differences in individual respondents' level of worry are in part attributable to shared country effects and to generalized risk sensitivity about a range of personal risks. On the underlying structure of food risk concerns, factor analysis points to three dimensions described by groupings of risks related to adulteration and contamination, health effects, and production and hygiene. A qualitative analysis of respondents' free associations about problems and risks with food identifies three major themes that are consistent with the quantitative results. However, the free associations also point toward greater cross-national diversity and to striking variations in the range and importance of food risks. Overall, the picture is of a public that frames food risks in a wider context of beliefs about the links between diet and health. We conclude with some implications for research on food risk perceptions in particular and risk perception studies in general.

Abstract

In medical research missing values often arise in the course of a data analysis. This fact constitutes a problem for different reasons, so e.g. standard methods for analyzing data lead to biased estimates and a loss of statistical power due to missing values, since those methods require complete data sets and therefore omit incomplete cases for the analyses. Furthermore missing values imply a certain loss of information for what reason the validity of results of a study with missing values has to be rated less than in a case where all data had been available. For years there are methods for replacement of missing values (Rubin, Schafer) to tackle these problems and solve them in parts. Hence in this article we want to present the existing software to handle and replace missing values on the one hand and give an outline about the available options to get information on the other hand. The methodological aspects of the replacement strategies are delineated just briefly in this article., In der medizinischen Forschung treten im Zuge einer Datenanalyse oftmals fehlende Werte auf. Dieser Umstand stellt aus verschiedenen Gründen ein Problem dar: Aufgrund fehlender Werte führen beispielsweise Standardmethoden für die Analyse von Daten zu verzerrten Schätzern und einem Powerverlust, da diese vollständiges Datenmaterial voraussetzen und deshalb die unvollständigen Fälle nicht berücksichtigen. Zudem bedeuten fehlende Werte einen gewissen Informationsverlust, weshalb die Aussagekraft der Ergebnisse einer Studie mit fehlenden Werten als geringer zu bewerten ist, als wenn alle Daten zur Verfügung gestanden hätten. Seit einigen Jahren gibt es Methoden zur Ersetzung fehlender Werte (Rubin, Schafer), um diese Probleme anzugehen und teilweise zu lösen. Mit diesem Artikel möchten wir daher zum einen die verfügbare Software zur Behandlung und Ersetzung fehlender Werte vorstellen und zum anderen eine Übersicht geben über die vorhandenen Informationsmöglichkeiten. Dabei werden die methodischen Aspekte der Ersetzungsstrategien nur kurz umrissen.

Abstract

Aims: For market approval, new drug formulations (test) must demonstrate bioequivalence (BE) to at least one approved formulation (reference). If several formulations of a drug are already on the market, one might have to show BE to more than one reference formulation. Similarly, if several test formulations have shown BE to a reference formulation, it will be of interest whether the test formulations are bioequivalent to each other. Methods: An enhanced statistical model to assess BE indirectly through a network meta-analysis is provided. Statistical properties of a parallel and a bridging approach are derived, in particular the relative statistical efficiency of the two approaches. The analysis is illustrated using individual subject data from two 3×3 crossover trials of metformin formulations, which have one of the formulations in common. Results: The parallel estimate of relative bioavailability is confounded with between-trial differences, while the bridging estimate is not. The standard errors of the formulation differences using the bridging approach are smaller than the standard errors using the parallel approach if the within-subject correlation in each trial of the network is larger than 0.5. This is the condition for a crossover trial to be more efficient than a parallel trial, and thus is usually fulfilled in pharmacokinetic crossover trials. Conclusions: Indirect BE assessment offers the opportunity to efficiently determine the relative bioavailability of drug formulations that have not been studied in the same randomized BE trial. Abstract

A total of ten boars were immunized with a vaccine against GnRH and the parameters for testicular function and N-retention compared with eight intact boars and eight barrows. The immunization of boars occurred at 10, 16 and 23 weeks of age. In six pigs from each group the nitrogen retention was determined at 20/21 weeks. Blood for testosterone determination was collected daily and fat biopsies for androstenone measurement every 2nd week from week 17 to 26 in all boars. After slaughter, testes size, backfat thickness and skatole concentrations in fat were determined. The immunized boars revealed significant lower (P≤0.001) testes weights (100.5 vs. 882.6 g), plasma testosterone concentrations (0.11 vs. 2.77 ng/ml) and fat androstenone concentrations (0.06 vs. 1.31 μg/g, week 26) compared to controls. Skatole concentrations also differed significantly between immunized boars and controls (14.4 vs. 109.2 ng/g fat). The immunized boars had a significantly poorer feed conversion rate (3.82 vs. 3.01 kg/kg) and nitrogen retention (22.97 vs. 31.24 g/day) compared to boars. Barrows did not differ significantly from the immunized boars. It is concluded that an early and repeated immunization against GnRH is highly effective for a complete androstenone suppression and a considerable reduction of skatole but it also abolishes the boar-specific anabolic potential.
