Search

The sample of planet-forming disks observed by high-contrast imaging campaigns over the last decade is mature enough to enable the demographical analysis of individual star-forming regions. We present the full census of Taurus sources with VLT/SPHERE polarimetric images available. The whole sample sums up to 43 targets (of which 31 have not been previously published) corresponding to one-fifth of the Class II population in Taurus and about half of such objects that are observable. A large fraction of the sample is apparently made up of isolated faint disks (equally divided between small and large self-shadowed disks). Ambient signal is visible in about one-third of the sample. This probes the interaction with the environment and with companions or the outflow activity of the system. The central portion of the Taurus region almost exclusively hosts faint disks, while the periphery also hosts bright disks interacting with their surroundings. The few bright disks are found around apparently older stars. The overall picture is that the Taurus region is in an early evolutionary stage of planet formation. Yet, some objects are discussed individually, as in an intermediate or exceptional stage of the disk evolution. From Nov. 2019 to May 2020, the red supergiant star Betelgeuse experienced an unprecedented drop of brightness in the visible domain called the great dimming event. Large atmospheric dust clouds and large photospheric convective features are suspected to be responsible for it. To better understand the dimming event, we used mid-infrared long-baseline spectro-interferometric measurements of Betelgeuse taken with the VLTI/MATISSE instrument before (Dec. 2018), during (Feb. 2020), and after (Dec. 2020) the GDE. We present data in the 3.98 to 4.15\,$\mu$m range to cover SiO spectral features molecules as well as adjacent continuum. We have employed geometrical models, image reconstruction, as well as radiative transfer models to monitor the spatial distribution of SiO over the stellar surface. We find a strongly in-homogeneous spatial distribution of SiO that appears to be looking very different between our observing epochs, indicative of a vigorous activity in the stellar atmosphere. The contrast of our images is small in the pseudo-continuum for all epochs, implying that our MATISSE observations support both cold spot and dust cloud model.

The total disk mass sets the formation potential for exoplanets. Carbon-monoxide (CO) has been used as a gas mass tracer in T Tauri disks, but was found to be less abundant than expected due to freeze-out and chemical conversion of CO on the surfaces of cold dust grains. The disks around more massive intermediate mass pre-main sequence stars called Herbig disks are likely to be warmer, allowing for the possibility of using CO as a more effective total gas mass tracer. Using ALMA archival data and new NOEMA data of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O transitions of 35 Herbig disks within 450 pc, the masses are determined using the thermo-chemical code Dust And LInes (DALI). The majority of Herbig disks for which 13CO and C18O are detected are optically thick in both. Computing the gas mass using a simple optically thin relation between line flux and column density results in an underestimate of the gas mass of at least an order of magnitude compared to the masses obtained with DALI. The inferred gas masses with DALI are consistent with a gas-to-dust ratio of at least 100. These gas-to-dust ratios are two orders of magnitude higher compared to those found for T Tauri disks using similar techniques, even over multiple orders of magnitude in dust mass, illustrating the importance of chemical conversion of CO in colder T Tauri disks. Similar high gas-to-dust ratios are found for Herbig group I and II disks. Since group II disks have dust masses comparable to T Tauri disks, their higher CO gas masses illustrate the determining role of temperature. Compared to debris disks, Herbig disks have four orders of magnitude higher gas masses. We use the long-slit spectroscopy mode of the VISIR-NEAR experiment to perform diffraction-limited observations of eight nearby Herbig Ae protoplanetary disks. We extract spectra for various locations along the slit with a spectral resolution of R = 300 and perform a compositional fit at each spatial location using spectral templates of silicates and the four PAH bands. This yields the intensity vs. location profiles of each species. Results. We could obtain spatially-resolved intensity profiles of the PAH emission features in the N-band for five objects (AB Aurigae, HD 97048, HD 100546, HD 163296, and HD 169142). We observe two kinds of PAH emission geometry in our sample: centrally-peaked (HD 97048) and ring-like (AB Aurigae, HD 100546, HD 163296, and potentially HD 169142). Comparing the spatial PAH emission profiles with near-infrared scattered light images, we find a strong correlation in the disk sub-structure but a difference in radial intensity decay rate. The PAH emission shows a less steep decline with distance from the star. Finally, we find a correlation between the presence of (sub-) micron-sized silicate grains leading to the depletion of PAH emission within the inner regions of the disks. In this work, we find the following: (1) PAH emission traces the extent of Herbig Ae disks to a considerable radial distance. (2) The correlation between silicate emission within the inner regions of disks and the depletion of PAH emission can result from dust-mixing and PAH coagulation mechanisms and competition over UV photons. (3) For all objects in our sample, PAHs undergo stochastic heating across the entire spatial extent of the disk and are not saturated. (4) The difference in radial intensity decay rates between the PAHs and scattered-light profiles may be attributed to shadowing and dust-settling effects, which affect the scattering grains more than the PAHs.

[Abridged] Most well-resolved disks observed with ALMA show signs of dust traps. These dust traps set the chemical composition of the planet forming material in these disks, as the dust grains with their icy mantles are trapped at specific radii and could deplete the gas and dust of volatiles at smaller radii. In this work we analyse the first detection of nitric oxide (NO) in a protoplanetary disk. We aim to constrain the nitrogen chemistry and the gas-phase C/O ratio in the highly asymmetric dust trap in the Oph-IRS 48 disk. We use ALMA observations of NO, CN, C$_2$H, and related molecules and model the effect of the dust trap on the physical and chemical structure using the thermochemical code DALI. Furthermore, we explore how ice sublimation contributes to the observed emission lines. NO is only observed at the location of the dust trap but CN and C$_2$H are not detected in the Oph-IRS 48 disk. This results in an CN/NO column density ratio of $< 0.05$ and thus a low C/O ratio at the location of the dust trap. The main gas-phase formation pathways to NO through OH and NH in the fiducial model predict NO emission that is an order of magnitude lower than is observed. The gaseous NO column density can be increased by factors ranging from 2.8 to 10 when the H$_2$O and NH$_3$ gas abundances are significantly boosted by ice sublimation. However, these models are inconsistent with the upper limits on the H$_2$O and OH column densities derived from observations. We propose that the NO emission in the Oph-IRS 48 disk is closely related to the nitrogen containing ices sublimating in the dust trap. The non-detection of CN constrains the C/O ratio both inside and outside the dust trap to be $< 1$ if all nitrogen initially starts as N$_2$ and $\leq 0.6$, consistent with the Solar value, if (part of) the nitrogen initially starts as N or NH$_3$., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Herbig stars can be classified into group I and group II depending on the shape of the far-IR excess from the spectral energy distribution. This separation may be evolutionary and related to the vertical structure of these disks. We aim to determine the emission height of Herbig disks and compare the resulting vertical extent of both groups. ALMA Band 6 observations of 12CO emission lines at sufficient velocity and spatial resolution of eight Herbig disks (four group I and four group II sources) are used to determine the emission heights from the channel maps via geometrical methods developed in other works. We find that all group I disks are vertically extended with a height to radius ratio of at least 0.25, and for three of the disks the gas emission profile can be traced out to 200-500 au. The group II disks are divided between MWC 480 and HD 163296 which have similar emission height profiles as the group I disks, and AK Sco and HD 142666 which are very flat (not exceeding a height of 10 au) and more compact (<200 au in size). The brightness temperatures show no differences between the disks when the luminosity of the host star is accounted for. Our findings agree with previous work suggesting that group I disks are vertically extended and that group II disks are either large and self-shadowed or compact. Both MWC 480 and HD 163296 could be precursors of group I disks, which we see now before a cavity has formed that would allow irradiation of the outer parts of the disk. The very flat disks AK Sco and HD 142666 could be due to significant settling because of the advanced age of these disks (~20 instead of <10 Myr). These large differences in vertical structures are not reflected in the spectral energy distributions of these disks. [Abridged] Observations of protoplanetary disks suggest that they are depleted in gas-phase CO. It has been posed that gas-phase CO is chemically consumed and converted into less volatile species through gas-grain processes. Observations of interstellar ices reveal a CO$_2$ component within H$_2$O ice suggesting co-formation. The aim of this work is to experimentally verify the interaction of gas-phase CO with solid-state OH radicals above the sublimation temperature of CO. Amorphous solid water (ASW) is deposited at 15 K and followed by vacuum-UV (VUV) irradiation to dissociate H$_2$O and create OH radicals. Gas-phase CO is simultaneously admitted and only adsorbs with a short residence time on the ASW. Products in the solid state are studied with infrared spectroscopy and once released into the gas phase with mass spectrometry. Results show that gas-phase CO is converted into CO$_2$, with an efficiency of 7-27%, when interacting with VUV irradiated ASW. Between 40 and 90 K, CO$_2$ production is constant, above 90 K, O$_2$ production takes over. In the temperature range of 40-60 K, the CO$_2$ remains in the solid state, while at temperatures $\geq$ 70 K the formed CO$_2$ is released into the gas phase. We conclude that gas-phase CO reacts with solid-state OH radicals above its sublimation temperature. This gas-phase CO and solid-state OH radical interaction could explain the observed CO$_2$ embedded in water-rich ices. It may also contribute to the observed lack of gas-phase CO in planet-forming disks, as previously suggested. Our experiments indicate a lower water ice dissociation efficiency than originally adopted in model descriptions of planet-forming disks and molecular clouds. Incorporation of the reduced water ice dissociation and increased binding energy of CO on a water ice surfaces in these models would allow investigation of this gas-grain interaction to its full extend., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

[Abridged] Far-infrared observations with Herschel revealed a surprisingly low abundance of cold-water reservoirs in protoplanetary discs. On the other hand, a handful of discs show emission of hot water transitions excited at temperatures above a few hundred Kelvin. In particular, the protoplanetary discs around the Herbig Ae stars HD 100546 and HD 163296 show opposite trends in terms of cold versus hot water emission: in the first case, the ground-state transitions are detected and the high-J lines are undetected, while the trend is opposite in HD 163296. We performed a spectral analysis using the thermo-chemical model DALI. We find that HD 163296 is characterised by a water-rich (abundance $\gtrsim 10^{-5}$) hot inner disc (within the snowline) and a water-poor ($< 10^{-10}$) outer disc: the relative abundance may be due to the thermal desorption of icy grains that have migrated inward. Remarkably, the size of the H$_2$O emitting region corresponds to a narrow dust gap visible in the millimeter continuum at $r=10\,$au with ALMA. The low-J lines detected in HD 100546 instead imply an abundance of a few $10^{-9}$ in the cold outer disc ($> 40$ au). The emitting region of the cold H$_2$O transitions is spatially coincident with that of the H$_2$O ice previously seen in the near-infrared. Notably, millimetre observations with ALMA reveal the presence of a large dust gap between nearly 40 and 150 au, likely opened by a massive embedded protoplanet. In both discs, we find that the warm molecular layer in the outer region (beyond the snow line) is highly depleted of water molecules, implying an oxygen-poor chemical composition of the gas. We speculate that gas-phase oxygen in the outer disc is readily depleted and its distribution in the disc is tightly coupled to the dynamics of the dust grains., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

[Abridged] Most disks observed at high angular resolution show substructures. Knowledge about the gas surface density and temperature is essential to understand these. The aim of this work is to constrain the gas temperature and surface density in two transition disks: LkCa15 and HD 169142. We use new ALMA observations of the $^{13}$CO $J=6-5$ transition together with archival $J=2-1$ data of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O to observationally constrain the gas temperature and surface density. Furthermore, we use the thermochemical code DALI to model the temperature and density structure of a typical transition disk. The $6-5/2-1$ line ratio in LkCa15 constrains the gas temperature in the emitting layers inside the dust cavity to be up to 65 K, warmer than in the outer disk at 20-30 K. For the HD 169142, the peak brightness temperature constrains the gas in the dust cavity of HD 169142 to be 170 K, whereas that in the outer disk is only 100 K. Models also show that a more luminous central star, a lower abundance of PAHs and the absence of a dusty inner disk increase the temperature of the emitting layers and hence the line ratio in the gas cavity. The gas column density in the LkCa15 dust cavity drops by a factor >2 compared to the outer disk, with an additional drop of an order of magnitude inside the gas cavity at 10 AU. In the case of HD 169142, the gas column density drops by a factor of 200$-$500 inside the gas cavity, which could be due to a massive companion of several M$_{\mathrm{J}}$. The broad dust-depleted gas region from 10-68 AU for LkCa15 may imply several lower mass planets. This work demonstrates that knowledge of the gas temperature is important to determine the gas surface density and thus whether planets, and if so what kind of planets, are the most likely carving the dust cavities., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and astrophysics

Measuring the gas mass of protoplanetary disks, the reservoir available for giant planet formation, has proven to be difficult. We currently lack a far-infrared observatory capable of observing HD, and the most common gas mass tracer, CO, suffers from a poorly constrained CO-to-H$_2$ ratio. Expanding on previous work, we investigate if N2H+, a chemical tracer of CO poor gas, can be used to observationally measure the CO-to-H$_2$ ratio and correct CO-based gas masses. Using disk structures obtained from the literature, we set up thermochemical models for three disks, TW Hya, DM Tau and GM Aur, to examine how well the CO-to-H$_2$ ratio and gas mass can be measured from N2H+ and C18O line fluxes. Furthermore, we compare these gas masses to independently gas masses measured from archival HD observations. The N2H+ (3-2)/C18O (2-1) line ratio scales with the disk CO-to-H$_2$ ratio. Using these two lines, we measure 4.6e-3 Msun < Mdisk < 1.1e-1 Msun for TW Hya, 1.5e-2 Msun < Mdisk < 9.6e-2 Msun for GM Aur and 3.1e-2 Msun < Mdisk < 9.6e-2 Msun for DM Tau. These gas masses agree with values obtained from HD within their respective uncertainties. The uncertainty on the N2H+ + C18O gas mass can be reduced by observationally constraining the cosmic ray ionization rate in disks. Context. VX Sgr is a cool, evolved, and luminous red star whose stellar parameters are difficult to determine, which affects its classification. Aims. We aim to spatially resolve the photospheric extent as well as the circumstellar environment. Methods. We used interferometric observations obtained with the MATISSE instrument in the L (3 to 4 {\mu}m), M (4.5 to 5 {\mu}m), and N (8 to 13 {\mu}m) bands. We reconstructed monochromatic images using the MIRA software. We used 3D radiation-hydrodynamics (RHD) simulations carried out with CO5BOLD and a uniform disc model to estimate the apparent diameter and interpret the stellar surface structures. Moreover, we employed the radiative transfer codes Optim3D and Radmc3D to compute the spectral energy distribution for the L, M, and N bands, respectively. Results. MATISSE observations unveil, for the first time, the morphology of VX Sgr across the L, M, and N bands. The reconstructed images show a complex morphology with brighter areas whose characteristics depend on the wavelength probed. We measured the angular diameter as a function of the wavelength and showed that the photospheric extent in the L and M bands depends on the opacity through the atmosphere. In addition to this, we also concluded that the observed photospheric inhomogeneities can be interpreted as convection-related surface structures. The comparison in the N band yielded a qualitative agreement between the N band spectrum and simple dust radiative transfer simulations. However, it is not possible to firmly conclude on the interpretation of the current data because of the difficulty in constraing the model parameters using the limited accuracy of our absolute flux calibration. Many population studies have been performed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to understand the bulk properties of protoplanetary disks around young stars. The studied populations mostly consisted of G, K & M stars, with relatively few more massive Herbig stars. With GAIA updated distances, now is a good time to use ALMA archival data for a Herbig disk population study and take an important step forward in our understanding of planet formation. This work determines the masses and sizes of all Herbig dust disks observed with ALMA to date out to 450 pc. These masses and sizes are put into context of the Lupus and Upper Sco T Tauri disk populations. ALMA Band 6 and Band 7 archival data of 36 Herbig stars are used, making this work 64% complete excluding Orion. Using stellar parameters and distances the dust masses and sizes of the disks are determined and survival analysis is used to make cumulative distributions of the dust masses and radii. Herbig disks have a higher dust mass than the T Tauri disk populations of Lupus and Upper Sco by factors of $\sim3$ and $\sim7$ respectively. In addition, Herbig disks are often larger than the typical T Tauri disk. Although the masses and sizes of Herbig disks extend over a similar range as those of T Tauri disks, the distributions of masses and sizes of Herbig disks are significantly skewed toward higher values. Lastly, group I disks are more massive than group II disks. Based on these findings we speculate that these differences between Herbig and T Tauri disks find their origin in an initial disk mass that scales with the stellar mass, and that subsequent disk evolution enlarges the observable differences, especially if (sub)mm continuum optical depth plays a role. Context: FS Canis Majoris (FS CMa, HD 45677) is an unclassified B[e] star surrounded by an inclined dust disk. The evolutionary stage of FS CMa is still debated. Perpendicular to the circumstellar disk, a bipolar outflow was detected. Infrared aperture-synthesis imaging provides us with a unique opportunity to study the disk structure. Aims: Our aim is to study the intensity distribution of the disk of FS CMa in the mid-infrared L and N bands. Methods: We performed aperture-synthesis imaging of FS CMa with the MATISSE instrument (Multi AperTure mid-Infrared SpectroScopic Experiment) in the low spectral resolution mode to obtain images in the L and N bands. We computed radiative transfer models that reproduce the L- and N-band intensity distributions of the resolved disks. Results: We present L- and N-band aperture-synthesis images of FS CMa reconstructed in the wavelength bands of 3.4-3.8 and 8.6-9.0 micrometer. In the L-band image, the inner rim region of an inclined circumstellar disk and the central object can be seen with a spatial resolution of 2.7 milliarcsec (mas). An inner disk cavity with an angular diameter of 6x12mas is resolved. The L-band disk consists of a bright northwestern (NW) disk region and a much fainter southeastern (SE) region. The images suggest that we are looking at the bright inner wall of the NW disk rim, which is on the far side of the disk. In the N band, only the bright NW disk region is seen. In addition to deriving the inclination and the inner disk radius, fitting the reconstructed brightness distributions via radiative transfer modeling allows one to constrain the innermost disk structure, in particular the shape of the inner disk rim., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

The nature of circumstellar envelopes (CSE) around Cepheids is still a matter of debate. The physical origin of their infrared (IR) excess could be either a shell of ionized gas, or a dust envelope, or both. This study aims at constraining the geometry and the IR excess of the environment of the long-period Cepheid $\ell$ Car (P=35.5 days) at mid-IR wavelengths to understand its physical nature. We first use photometric observations in various bands and Spitzer Space Telescope spectroscopy to constrain the IR excess of $\ell$ Car. Then, we analyze the VLTI/MATISSE measurements at a specific phase of observation, in order to determine the flux contribution, the size and shape of the environment of the star in the L band. We finally test the hypothesis of a shell of ionized gas in order to model the IR excess. We report the first detection in the L band of a centro-symmetric extended emission around l Car, of about 1.7$R_\star$ in FWHM, producing an excess of about 7.0\% in this band. In the N band, there is no clear evidence for dust emission from VLTI/MATISSE correlated flux and Spitzer data. On the other side, the modeled shell of ionized gas implies a more compact CSE ($1.13\pm0.02\,R_\star$) and fainter (IR excess of 1\% in the L band). We provide new evidences for a compact CSE of $\ell$ Car and we demonstrate the capabilities of VLTI/MATISSE for determining common properties of CSEs. While the compact CSE of $\ell$ Car is probably of gaseous nature, the tested model of a shell of ionized gas is not able to simultaneously reproduce the IR excess and the interferometric observations. Further Galactic Cepheids observations with VLTI/MATISSE are necessary for determining the properties of CSEs, which may also depend on both the pulsation period and the evolutionary state of the stars., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

[Abridged] Planet formation is expected to be enhanced around snowlines in protoplanetary disks, in particular around the water snowline. However, the close proximity of the water snowline to the host star and water in the Earth's atmosphere makes a direct detection of the water snowline in protoplanetary disks challenging. Following earlier work on protostellar envelopes, the aim of this research is to investigate the validity of HCO$^+$ and H$^{13}$CO$^+$, as tracers of the water snowline in protoplanetary disks, as HCO$^+$ is destroyed by gas-phase water. Two small chemical networks are used to predict the HCO$^+$ abundance in a typical Herbig Ae disk. Subsequently, the corresponding emission profiles are modelled for H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ $J=2-1$, which provides the best balance between brightness and optical depth effects of the continuum emission. The HCO$^+$ abundance jumps by two orders of magnitude just outside the water snowline at 4.5 AU. We find that the emission of H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ is ring-shaped due to three effects: destruction of HCO$^+$ by gas-phase water, continuum optical depth, and molecular excitation effects. The presence of gas-phase water causes an additional drop of only $\sim$13% and 24% in the center of the disk, for H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$, respectively. For the much more luminous outbursting source V883Ori, our models predict that the effect of dust and excitation are not limiting if the snowline is located outside $\sim$40 AU. Our analysis of ALMA observations of HCO$^+$ $J=3-2$ is consistent with the water snowline located around 100 AU. The HCO$^+$ abundance drops steeply around the water snowline, but dust and excitation can conceal the drop in HCO$^+$ emission due to the water snowline. Therefore, locating the water snowline with HCO$^+$ in Herbig disks is very difficult, but it is possible for outbursting sources like V883Ori., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 13 pages, 11 figures + appendices

Context: ALMA observations of Venus at 267 GHz have been presented in the literature that show the apparent presence of phosphine (PH3) in its atmosphere. Phosphine has currently no evident production routes on the planet's surface or in its atmosphere. Aims: The aim of this work is to assess the statistical reliability of the line detection by independent re-analysis of the ALMA data. Methods: The ALMA data were reduced as in the published study, following the provided scripts. First the spectral analysis presented in the study was reproduced and assessed. Subsequently, the spectrum was statistically evaluated, including its dependence on selected ALMA baselines. Results: We find that the 12th-order polynomial fit to the spectral passband utilised in the published study leads to spurious results. Following their recipe, five other >10 sigma lines can be produced in absorption or emission within 60 km/s from the PH3 1-0 transition frequency by suppressing the surrounding noise. Our independent analysis shows a feature near the PH3 frequency at a ~2 sigma level, below the common threshold for statistical significance. Since the spectral data have a non-Gaussian distribution, we consider a feature at such level as statistically unreliable that cannot be linked to a false positive probability. Conclusions: We find that the published 267-GHz ALMA data provide no statistical evidence for phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A after minor revisions

Context. The star formation rates and stellar densities found in young massive clusters suggest that these stellar systems originate from gas at densities n(H$_2$) $>10^7$ cm$^{-3}$. Until today, however, the physical characterization of this ultra high density material remains largely unconstrained in observations. Aims. We investigated the density properties of the star-forming gas in the OMC-1 region located in the vicinity of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Methods. We mapped the molecular emission at 652 GHz in OMC-1 as part of the APEX-SEPIA660 Early Science. Results. We detect bright and extended N$_2$H$^+$ (J=7-6) line emission along the entire OMC-1 region. Comparisons with previous ALMA data of the (J=1-0) transition and radiative transfer models indicate that the line intensities observed in this N$_2$H$^+$ (7-6) line are produced by large mass reservoirs of gas at densities n(H$_2$) $>10^7$ cm$^{-3}$. Conclusions. The first detection of this N$_2$H$^+$ (7-6) line at parsec-scales demonstrates the extreme density conditions of the star-forming gas in young massive clusters such as the ONC. The evolution of protoplanetary disks is dominated by the conservation of angular momentum, where the accretion of material onto the central star is driven by viscous expansion of the outer disk or by disk winds extracting angular momentum without changing the disk size. Studying the time evolution of disk sizes allows us therefore to distinguish between viscous stresses or disk winds as the main mechanism of disk evolution. Observationally, estimates of the disk gaseous outer radius are based on the extent of the CO rotational emission, which, during the evolution, is also affected by the changing physical and chemical conditions in the disk. We use physical-chemical DALI models to study how the extent of the CO emission changes with time in a viscously expanding disk and investigate to what degree this observable gas outer radius is a suitable tracer of viscous spreading and whether current observations are consistent with viscous evolution. We find that the gas outer radius (R_co) measured from our models matches the expectations of a viscously spreading disk: R_co increases with time and for a given time R_co is larger for a disk with a higher viscosity alpha_visc. However, in the extreme case where the disk mass is low (less than 10^-4 Msun) and alpha_visc is high (larger than 10^-2), R_co will instead decrease with time as a result of CO photodissociation in the outer disk. For most disk ages R_co is up to 12x larger than the characteristic size R_c of the disk, and R_co/R_c is largest for the most massive disk. As a result of this difference, a simple conversion of R_co to alpha_visc will overestimate the true alpha_visc of the disk by up to an order of magnitude. We find that most observed gas outer radii in Lupus can be explained using a viscously evolving disk that starts out small (R_c = 10 AU) and has a low viscosity (alpha_visc = 10^-4 - 10^-3)., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, accepted in A&A

Recent ALMA surveys of protoplanetary disks have shown that for most disks the extent of the gas emission is greater than the extent of the thermal emission of the millimeter-sized dust. Both line optical depth and the combined effect of radially dependent grain growth and radial drift may contribute to this observed effect. For a sample of 10 disks from the Lupus survey we investigate how well dust-based models without radial dust evolution reproduce the observed 12CO outer radius, and determine whether radial dust evolution is required to match the observed gas-dust size difference. We used the thermochemical code DALI to obtain 12CO synthetic emission maps and measure gas and dust outer radii (Rco, Rmm) using the same methods as applied to the observations, which were compared to observations on a source-by-source basis. For 5 disks we find that the observed gas-dust size difference is larger than the gas-dust size difference due to optical depth, indicating that we need both dust evolution and optical depth effects to explain the observed gas-dust size difference. For the other 5 disks the observed gas-dust size difference can be explained using only line optical depth effects. We also identify 6 disks not included in our initial sample but part of a survey of the same star-forming region that show significant 12CO emission beyond 4 x Rmm. These disks, for which no Rco is available, likely have gas-dust size differences greater than 4 and are difficult to explain without substantial dust evolution. Our results suggest that radial drift and grain growth are common features among both bright and fain disks. The effects of radial drift and grain growth can be observed in disks where the dust and gas radii are significantly different, while more detailed models and deeper observations are needed to see this effect in disks with smaller differences., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted in A&A

The earliest phases of star formation are characterised by intense mass accretion from the circumstellar disk to the central star. One group of young stellar objects, the FU Orionis-type stars exhibit accretion rate peaks accompanied by bright eruptions. The occurrence of these outbursts might solve the luminosity problem of protostars, play a key role in accumulating the final star mass, and have a significant effect on the parameters of the envelope and the disk. In the framework of the Structured Accretion Disks ERC project, we are conducting a systematic investigation of these sources with millimeter interferometry to examine whether they represent normal young stars in exceptional times or they are unusual objects. Our results show that FU Orionis-type stars can be similar to both Class I and Class II systems and may be in a special evolutionary phase between the two classes with their infall-driven episodic eruptions being the main driving force of the transition., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Hydrogen deuteride (HD) rotational line emission can provide reliable protoplanetary disk gas mass measurements, but it is difficult to observe and detections have been limited to three T-Tauri disks. No new data have been available since the \emph{Herschel} Space Observatory mission ended in 2013. We set out to obtain new disk gas mass constraints by analysing upper limits on HD 1-0 emission in \emph{Herschel}/PACS archival data from the DIGIT key programme. With a focus on the Herbig Ae/Be disks, whose stars are more luminous than T Tauris, we determine upper limits for HD in data previosly analysed for its line detections. Their significance is studied with a grid of models run with the DALI physical-chemical code, customised to include deuterium chemistry. Nearly all the disks are constrained to $M_{\rm gas}\leq0.1\,$M$_{\odot}$, ruling out global gravitational instability. A strong constraint is obtained for the HD 163296 disk mass, $M_{\rm gas} \leq 0.067\,$M$_{\odot}$, implying $\Delta_{\rm g/d}\leq100$. This HD-based mass limit is towards the low end of CO-based mass estimates for the disk, highlighting the large uncertainty in using only CO and suggesting that gas-phase CO depletion in HD 163296 is at most a factor of a few. The $M_{\rm gas}$ limits for HD 163296 and HD 100546, both bright disks with massive candidate protoplanetary systems, suggest disk-to-planet mass conversion efficiencies of $M_{\rm p}/(M_{\rm gas} + M_{\rm p})\approx10$ to $40\,$% for present-day values. Near-future observations with SOFIA/HIRMES will be able to detect HD in the brightest Herbig~Ae/Be disks within $150\,$pc with $\approx10\,$h integration time., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the highest angular resolution (20x15mas - 44x33au) Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) observations currently possible of the proto-O-star G17.64+0.16 in Band 6. The Cycle 5 observations with baselines out to 16km probes scales <50au and reveal the rotating disc around G17.64+0.16, a massive forming O-type star. The disc has a ring-like enhancement in the dust emission, especially visible as arc structures to the north and south. The Keplerian kinematics are most prominently seen in the vibrationally excited water line, H2O (Eu=3461.9K). The mass of the central source found by modelling the Keplerian rotation is consistent with 45+/-10Mo. The H30alpha (231.9GHz) radio-recombination line and the SiO (5-4) molecular line were detected at up to the 10 sigma$ level. The estimated disc mass is 0.6-2.6Mo under the optically thin assumption. Analysis of the Toomre Q parameter, in the optically thin regime, indicates that the disc stability is highly dependent on temperature. We present ALMA CO(1-0) observations toward the dust lane of the nearest elliptical and radio galaxy, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), with high angular resolution ($\sim$ 1 arcsec, or 18 pc), including information from large to small spatial scales and total flux. We find a total molecular gas mass of 1.6$\times$10$^9$ $M_\odot$ and we reveal the presence of filamentary components more extended than previously seen, up to a radius of 4 kpc. We find that the global star formation rate is $\sim$1 \Msol yr$^{-1}$, which yields a star formation efficiency (SFE) of 0.6 Gyr$^{-1}$ (depletion time $\tau =$1.5 Gyr), similar to those in disk galaxies. We show the most detailed view to date (40\,pc resolution) of the relation between molecular gas and star formation within the stellar component of an elliptical galaxy, from several kpc scale to the circumnuclear region close to the powerful radio jet. Although on average the SFEs are similar to those of spiral galaxies, the circumnuclear disk (CND) presents SFEs of 0.3 Gyr$^{-1}$, lower by a factor of 4 than the outer disk. The low SFE in the CND is in contrast to the high SFEs found in the literature for the circumnuclear regions of some nearby disk galaxies with nuclear activity, probably as a result of larger shear motions and longer AGN feedback. The higher SFEs in the outer disk suggests that only central molecular gas or filaments with sufficient density and strong shear motions will remain in $\sim$1 Gyr, which will later result in the compact molecular distributions and low SFEs usually seen in other giant ellipticals with cold gas., Comment: Minor update. 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The extent of the gas in protoplanetary disks is observed to be universally larger than the extent of the dust. This is often attributed to radial drift and grain growth of the mm grains, but line optical depth produces a similar observational signature. We investigate in what parts of the disk structure parameter space dust evolution and line optical depth are the dominant drivers of the observed gas and dust size difference. Using the thermochemical model DALI with dust evolution included we ran a grid of models aimed at reproducing the observed gas and dust size dichotomy. The relation between R_dust and dust evolution is non-monotonic and depends on the disk structure. R_gas is directly related to the radius where the CO column density drops below 10^15 cm^-2 and CO becomes photodissociated. R_gas is not affected by dust evolution but scales with the total CO content of the disk. R_gas/R_dust > 4 is a clear sign for dust evolution and radial drift in disks, but these cases are rare in current observations. For disks with a smaller R_gas/R_dust, identifying dust evolution from R_gas/R_dust requires modelling the disk structure including the total CO content. To minimize the uncertainties due to observational factors requires FWHM_beam < 1x the characteristic radius and a peak SNR > 10 on the 12CO emission moment zero map. For the dust outer radius to enclose most of the disk mass, it should be defined using a high fraction (90-95%) of the total flux. For the gas, any radius enclosing > 60% of the 12CO flux will contain most of the disk mass. To distinguish radial drift and grain growth from line optical depth effects based on size ratios requires disks to be observed at high enough angular resolution and the disk structure should to be modelled to account for the total CO content of the disk., Comment: 18 pages, 27 figures, accepted in A&A

In the search for the building blocks of life, nitrogen-bearing molecules are of particular interest since nitrogen-containing bonds are essential for the linking of amino acids and ultimately the formation of larger biological structures. The elusive molecule methylamine (CH$_3$NH$_2$) is thought to be a key pre-biotic species but has so far only been securely detected in the giant molecular cloud Sgr B2. We identify CH$_3$NH$_2$ and other simple nitrogen-bearing species towards three hot cores in NGC 6334I. Column density ratios are derived in order to investigate the relevance of the individual species as precursors of biotic molecules. Observations obtained with ALMA were used to study transitions of CH$_3$NH$_2$, CH$_2$NH, NH$_2$CHO, and the $^{13}$C- and $^{15}$N-methyl cyanide (CH$_3$CN) isotopologues. Column densities are derived for each species assuming LTE and excitation temperatures in the range 220-340 K for CH$_3$NH$_2$, 70-110 K for the CH$_3$CN isotopologues, and 120-215 K for NH$_2$CHO and CH$_2$NH. We report the first detections of CH$_3$NH$_2$ towards NGC 6334I with column density ratios with respect to CH$_3$OH of 5.9$\times$10$^{-3}$, 1.5$\times$10$^{-3}$, and 5.4$\times$10$^{-4}$ for the three hot cores MM1, MM2, and MM3, respectively. These values are slightly lower than the values derived for Sgr B2 but higher by more than order of magnitude as compared with the values derived for the low-mass protostar IRAS 16293-2422B. The detections of CH$_3$NH$_2$ in the hot cores of NGC 6334I hint that CH$_3$NH$_2$ is generally common in the interstellar medium, albeit high-sensitivity observations are essential for its detection. The good agreement between model predictions of CH$_3$NH$_2$ ratios and the observations towards NGC 6334I indicate a main formation pathway via radical recombination on grain surfaces., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Methanol (CH$_3$OH) is at the root of organic ice chemistry in protoplanetary disks. However, its weak emission has made detections difficult. To date, gas-phase CH$_3$OH has been detected in only one Class II disk, TW Hya. We use the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to search for a total of four CH$_3$OH emission lines in bands 6 and 7 toward the disk around the young Herbig Ae star HD 163296. The disk-averaged column density of methanol and its related species formaldehyde (H$_2$CO) are estimated assuming optically thin emission in local thermodynamic equilibrium. We compare these results to the gas-phase column densities of the TW Hya disk. No targeted methanol lines were detected individually nor after line stacking. The 3$\sigma$ disk-integrated intensity upper limits are $< 51$ mJy km s$^{-1}$ for the band 6 lines and $< 26$ mJy km s$^{-1}$ for the band 7 lines. The band 7 lines provide the strictest 3$\sigma$ upper limit on disk-averaged column density with $N_{\mathrm{avg}} < 5.0 \times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$. The methanol-to-formaldehyde ratio is CH$_3$OH/H$_2$CO $< 0.24$ in the HD 163296 disk compared to a ratio of $1.27$ in the TW Hya disk. Differences in the stellar irradiation of Herbig disks compared to T Tauri disks likely influence the gaseous methanol and formaldehyde content. Possible reasons for the lower HD 163296 methanol-to-formaldehyde ratio include: a higher than expected gas-phase formation of H$_2$CO in the HD 163296 disk, uncertainties in the grain surface formation efficiency of CH$_3$OH and H$_2$CO, and differences in the disk structure and/or CH$_3$OH and H$_2$CO desorption processes that release the molecules from ice mantles back into the gas phase. The cyanide radical CN is abundant in protoplanetary disks, with line fluxes often comparable to those of $^{13}$CO. It is known to be sensitive to UV irradiation of the upper disk atmosphere, with models predicting ring-shaped emission. We seek to characterize the CN emission from 94 Class II disks in the Lupus star forming region, compare it to observations in other regions, and interpret our observations with a grid of models. The CN emission morphology is discussed for two primordial disks, Sz 71 and Sz 98, and modeled in more detail. ALMA observed CN N=3-2 in Lupus disks down to sensitivities better than previous surveys. Models constructed with the physico-chemical code DALI are used to study the integrated fluxes of the disks and resolved emission of CN in disks without (dust) substructures. We find that CN N=3-2 is bright, and detected in 38% of sources, but its disk-integrated flux is not strongly correlated to either $^{13}$CO or continuum flux. Compared to pre-ALMA single-dish surveys, no significant difference in the CN flux distributions in Lupus and Taurus-Auriga is found, although $\rho$ Ophiuchus disks may be fainter on average. We find ring-shaped CN emission with peak radii of ~50 AU in two resolved disks. We conclude that a large fraction of sources is faint in CN; only exponential gas surface density cutoffs at $R_{c} \leq 15$ AU can reconcile observations with models. This is the first observational evidence of such a compact gas disk population in Lupus. Absolute intensities and the emission morphology of CN are reproduced by DALI models without the need for any continuum substructure; they are unrelated to the CO snowline location. We present high angular resolution 0.2 arcsec continuum and molecular emission line Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of G17.64+0.16 in Band 6 (220GHz) taken as part of a campaign in search of circumstellar discs around (proto)-O-stars. At a resolution of 400au the main continuum core is essentially unresolved and isolated from other strong and compact emission peaks. We detect SiO (5-4) emission that is marginally resolved and elongated in a direction perpendicular to the large-scale outflow seen in the 13CO (2-1) line using the main ALMA array in conjunction with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA). Morphologically, the SiO appears to represent a disc-like structure. Using parametric models we show that the position-velocity profile of the SiO is consistent with the Keplerian rotation of a disc around an object between 10-30Mo in mass, only if there is also radial expansion from a separate structure. The radial motion component can be interpreted as a disc wind from the disc surface. Models with a central stellar object mass between 20 and 30Mo are the most consistent with the stellar luminosity (100000 Lo) and indicative of an O-type star. The H30a millimetre recombination line (231.9GHz) is also detected, but spatially unresolved, and is indicative of a very compact, hot, ionised region co-spatial with the dust continuum core. Accounting for all observables, we suggest that G17.64 is consistent with a O-type young stellar object in the final stages of protostellar assembly, driving a wind, but that has not yet developed into a compact HII region. The existance and detection of the disc in G17.64 is likely related to its isolated and possibly more evolved nature, traits which may underpin discs in similar sources., Comment: 23 pages, 13 fig (inc 3 Appendix figures)

We aim to reproduce the DCO$^+$ emission in the disk around HD163296 using a simple 2D chemical model for the formation of DCO$^+$ through the cold deuteration channel and a parametric treatment of the warm deuteration channel. We use data from ALMA in band 6 to obtain a resolved spectral imaging data cube of the DCO$^+$ $J$=3--2 line in HD163296 with a synthesized beam of 0."53$\times$ 0."42. We adopt a physical structure of the disk from the literature that reproduces the spectral energy distribution. We then apply a simplified chemical network for the formation of DCO$^+$ that uses the physical structure of the disk as parameters along with a CO abundance profile, a constant HD abundance and a constant ionization rate. Finally, from the resulting DCO$^+$ abundances, we calculate the non-LTE emission using the 3D radiative transfer code LIME. The observed DCO$^+$ emission is reproduced by a model with cold deuteration producing abundances up to $1.6\times 10^{-11}$. Warm deuteration, at a constant abundance of $3.2\times 10^{-12}$, becomes fully effective below 32 K and tapers off at higher temperatures, reproducing the lack of DCO$^+$ inside 90 AU. Throughout the DCO$^+$ emitting zone a CO abundance of $2\times 10^{-7}$ is found, with $\sim$99\% of it frozen out below 19 K. At radii where both cold and warm deuteration are active, warm deuteration contributes up to 20\% of DCO$^+$, consistent with detailed chemical models. The decrease of DCO$^+$ at large radii is attributed to a temperature inversion at 250 AU, which raises temperatures above values where cold deuteration operates. Increased photodesorption may also limit the radial extent of DCO$^+$. The corresponding return of the DCO$^+$ layer to the midplane, together with a radially increasing ionization fraction, reproduces the local DCO$^+$ emission maximum at $\sim$260 AU., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted 7th July 2018

A wide variety of ring-like dust structures has been detected in protoplanetary disks, but their origin and frequency are still unclear. We characterize the structure of an extended, multi-ringed disk discovered serendipitously in the ALMA Lupus disk survey and put it in the context of the Lupus disk population. ALMA observations in Band 6 at 234 GHz and Band 7 at 328 GHz at 0.3" resolution toward the K6 star V1094 Sco in Lupus III are presented, and its disk structure is analyzed. The spectral index $\alpha_{mm}$ is determined in the inner 150 AU of the disk. The ALMA continuum data show a very extended disk with two gap/ring pairs. The gaps are located at 100 AU and 170 AU, the bright rings at 130 AU and 220 AU. Continuum emission is detected out to a 300 AU distance, similar to IM Lup but a factor of 5 larger than typically found for Lupus disks at this sensitivity and resolution. The bright central region of the disk (within 35 AU) is possibly optically thick at 1 mm wavelengths, and has a brightness temperature of only 13 K. The spectral index increases between the inner disk and the first ring, at the location of the first gap. Due to the low temperature of the disk midplane, snow lines can be excluded as the drivers behind the ring and gap formation in this disk. Disks the size of V1094 Sco are rare, and only 2.1+-1.5% of disks in Lupus show continuum emission beyond 200 AU. This work aims to understand which midplane conditions are probed by the DCO$^+$ emission in the disk around the Herbig Ae star HD 169142. We explore the sensitivity of the DCO$^+$ formation pathways to the gas temperature and the CO abundance. The DCO$^+$ $J$=3-2 transition was observed with ALMA at a spatial resolution of 0.3". The HD 169142 DCO$^+$ radial intensity profile reveals a warm, inner component at radii <30 AU and a broad, ring-like structure from ~50-230 AU with a peak at 100 AU just beyond the millimeter grain edge. We modeled DCO$^+$ emission in HD 169142 with a physical disk structure adapted from the literature, and employed a simple deuterium chemical network to investigate the formation of DCO$^+$ through the cold deuterium fractionation pathway via H$_2$D$^+$. Contributions from the warm deuterium fractionation pathway via CH$_2$D$^+$ are approximated using a constant abundance in the intermediate disk layers. Parameterized models show that alterations to the midplane gas temperature and CO abundance of the literature model are both needed to recover the observed DCO$^+$ radial intensity profile. The best-fit model contains a shadowed, cold midplane in the region z/r < 0.1 with an 8 K decrease in gas temperature and a factor of five CO depletion just beyond the millimeter grain edge, and a 2 K decrease in gas temperature for r > 120 AU. The warm deuterium fractionation pathway is implemented as a constant DCO$^+$ abundance of 2.0$\times$10$^{-12}$ between 30-70 K. The DCO$^+$ emission probes a reservoir of cold material in the HD 169142 outer disk that is not revealed by the millimeter continuum, the SED, nor the emission from the 12CO, 13CO, or C18O $J$=2-1 lines., Comment: Accepted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present 850 and 450 micron observations of the dense regions within the Auriga-California molecular cloud using SCUBA-2 as part of the JCMT Gould Belt Legacy Survey to identify candidate protostellar objects, measure the masses of their circumstellar material (disk and envelope), and compare the star formation to that in the Orion A molecular cloud. We identify 59 candidate protostars based on the presence of compact submillimeter emission, complementing these observations with existing Herschel/SPIRE maps. Of our candidate protostars, 24 are associated with young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Spitzer and Herschel/PACS catalogs of 166 and 60 YSOs, respectively (177 unique), confirming their protostellar nature. The remaining 35 candidate protostars are in regions, particularly around LkHalpha 101, where the background cloud emission is too bright to verify or rule out the presence of the compact 70 micron emission that is expected for a protostellar source. We keep these candidate protostars in our sample but note that they may indeed be prestellar in nature. Our observations are sensitive to the high end of the mass distribution in Auriga-Cal. We find that the disparity between the richness of infrared star forming objects in Orion A and the sparsity in Auriga-Cal extends to the submillimeter, suggesting that the relative star formation rates have not varied over the Class II lifetime and that Auriga-Cal will maintain a lower star formation efficiency., Comment: 39 pages (54 including the Appendix), 9 figures, 3 tables, in press in ApJ

FU Orionis-type objects are young, low-mass stars with large outbursts in visible light that last for several years or decades. They are thought to represent an evolutionary phase during the life of every young star when accretion from the circumstellar disk is enhanced during recurring time periods. These outbursts are able to rapidly build up the star while affecting the circumstellar disk and thus the ongoing or future planet formation. In many models infall from a circumstellar envelope seems to be necessary to trigger the outbursts. We observed the J=1$-$0 rotational transition of $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O towards eight northern FU Orionis-type stars (V1057 Cyg, V1515 Cyg, V2492 Cyg, V2493 Cyg, V1735 Cyg, V733 Cep, RNO 1B and RNO 1C) and derive temperatures and envelope masses and discuss the morphology and kinematics of the circumstellar material. We detected extended CO emission associated with all our targets. Smaller scale CO clumps were found to be associated with five objects with radii of 2000$-$5000 AU and masses of 0.02$-$0.5 $M_{\odot}$; these are clearly heated by the central stars. Three of these envelopes are also strongly detected in the 2.7 mm continuum. No central CO clumps were detected around V733 Cep and V710 Cas but there are many other clumps in their environments. Traces of outflow activity were observed towards V1735 Cyg, V733 Cep and V710 Cas. The diversity of the observed envelopes enables us to set up an evolutionary sequence between the objects. We find their evolutionary state to range from early, embedded Class I stage to late, Class II-type objects with very low-mass circumstellar material. The results reinforce the idea of FU Orionis-type stars as representatives of a transitory stage between embedded Class I young stellar objects and classical T-Tauri stars., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

A long-standing open issue of the paradigm of low-mass star formation is the luminosity problem: most protostars are less luminous than theoretically predicted. One possible solution is that the accretion process is episodic. FU Ori-type stars (FUors) are thought to be the visible examples for objects in the high accretion state. FUors are often surrounded by massive envelopes, which replenish the disk material and enable the disk to produce accretion outbursts. However, we have insufficient information on the envelope dynamics in FUors, about where and how mass transfer from the envelope to the disk happens. Here we present ALMA observations of the FUor-type star V346 Nor at 1.3 mm continuum and in different CO rotational lines. We mapped the density and velocity structure of its envelope and analyze the results using channel maps, position-velocity diagrams, and spectro-astrometric methods. We found that V346 Nor is surrounded by gaseous material on 10000 au scale in which a prominent outflow cavity is carved. Within the central $\sim$700 au, the circumstellar matter forms a flattened pseudo-disk where material is infalling with conserved angular momentum. Within $\sim$350 au, the velocity profile is more consistent with a disk in Keplerian rotation around a central star of 0.1 $M_{\odot}$. We determined an infall rate from the envelope onto the disk of 6$\times$10$^{-6}\,M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, a factor of few higher than the quiescent accretion rate from the disk onto the star, hinting for a mismatch between the infall and accretion rates as the cause of the eruption., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, published in ApJ

The formation pathways of deuterated species trace different regions of protoplanetary disks and may shed light into their physical structure. We aim to constrain the radial extent of main deuterated species; we are particularly interested in spatially characterizing the high and low temperature pathways for enhancing deuteration of these species. We observed the disk surrounding the Herbig Ae star HD 163296 using ALMA in Band 6 and obtained resolved spectral imaging data of DCO$^+$ ($J$=3-2), DCN ($J$=3-2) and N$_2$D$^+$ ($J$=3-2). We model the radial emission profiles of DCO$^+$, DCN and N$_2$D$^+$, assuming their emission is optically thin, using a parametric model of their abundances and radial excitation temperature estimates. DCO$^+$ can be described by a three-region model, with constant-abundance rings centered at 70 AU, 150 AU and 260 AU. The DCN radial profile peaks at about ~60 AU and N$_2$D$^+$ is seen in a ring at ~160 AU. Simple models of both molecules using constant abundances reproduce the data. Assuming reasonable average excitation temperatures for the whole disk, their disk-averaged column densities (and deuterium fractionation ratios) are 1.6-2.6$\times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ (0.04-0.07), 2.9-5.2$\times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ ($\sim$0.02) and 1.6-2.5 $\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ (0.34-0.45) for DCO$^+$, DCN and N$_2$D$^+$, respectively. Our simple best-fit models show a correlation between the radial location of the first two rings in DCO$^+$ and the DCN and N$_2$D$^+$ abundance distributions that can be interpreted as the high and low temperature deuteration pathways regimes. The origin of the third DCO$^+$ ring at 260 AU is unknown but may be due to a local decrease of ultraviolet opacity allowing the photodesorption of CO or due to thermal desorption of CO as a consequence of radial drift and settlement of dust grains.

The Atacama Large millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) makes use of water vapour radiometers (WVR), which monitor the atmospheric water vapour line at 183 GHz along the line of sight above each antenna to correct for phase delays introduced by the wet component of the troposphere. The application of WVR derived phase corrections improve the image quality and facilitate successful observations in weather conditions that were classically marginal or poor. We present work to indicate that a scaling factor applied to the WVR solutions can act to further improve the phase stability and image quality of ALMA data. We find reduced phase noise statistics for 62 out of 75 datasets from the long-baseline science verification campaign after a WVR scaling factor is applied. The improvement of phase noise translates to an expected coherence improvement in 39 datasets. When imaging the bandpass source, we find 33 of the 39 datasets show an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) between a few to ~30 percent. There are 23 datasets where the S/N of the science image is improved: 6 by <1%, 11 between 1 and 5%, and 6 above 5%. The higher frequencies studied (band 6 and band 7) are those most improved, specifically datasets with low precipitable water vapour (PWV), <1mm, where the dominance of the wet component is reduced. Although these improvements are not profound, phase stability improvements via the WVR scaling factor come into play for the higher frequency (>450 GHz) and long-baseline (>5km) observations. These inherently have poorer phase stability and are taken in low PWV (<1mm) conditions for which we find the scaling to be most effective. A promising explanation for the scaling factor is the mixing of dry and wet air components, although other origins are discussed. Three formaldehyde lines were observed (H$_2$CO 3$_{03}$--2$_{02}$, H$_2$CO 3$_{22}$--2$_{21}$, and H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$--2$_{20}$) in the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star HD 163296 with ALMA at 0.5 arcsecond (60 AU) spatial resolution. H$_2$CO 3$_{03}$--2$_{02}$ was readily detected via imaging, while the weaker H$_2$CO 3$_{22}$--2$_{21}$ and H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$--2$_{20}$ lines required matched filter analysis to detect. H$_2$CO is present throughout most of the gaseous disk, extending out to 550 AU. An apparent 50 AU inner radius of the H$_2$CO emission is likely caused by an optically thick dust continuum. The H$_2$CO radial intensity profile shows a peak at 100 AU and a secondary bump at around 300 AU, suggesting increased production in the outer disk. Different parameterizations of the H$_2$CO abundance were compared to the observed visibilities with $\chi^2$ minimization, using either a characteristic temperature, a characteristic radius or a radial power law index to describe the H$_2$CO chemistry. Similar models were applied to ALMA Science Verification data of C$^{18}$O. In all modeling scenarios, fits to the H$_2$CO data show an increased abundance in the outer disk. The overall best-fit H$_2$CO model shows a factor of two enhancement beyond a radius of 270$\pm$20 AU, with an inner abundance of $2\!-\!5 \times 10^{-12}$. The H$_2$CO emitting region has a lower limit on the kinetic temperature of $T > 20$ K. The C$^{18}$O modeling suggests an order of magnitude depletion in the outer disk and an abundance of $4\!-\!12 \times 10^{-8}$ in the inner disk. The increase in H$_2$CO outer disk emission could be a result of hydrogenation of CO ices on dust grains that are then sublimated via thermal desorption or UV photodesorption, or more efficient gas-phase production beyond about 300 AU if CO is photodisocciated in this region.

The protoplanetary system HD 169142 is one of the few cases where a potential candidate protoplanet has been recently detected via direct imaging. To study the interaction between the protoplanet and the disk itself observations of the gas and dust surface density structure are needed. This paper reports new ALMA observations of the dust continuum at 1.3\,mm, $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O $J=2-1$ emission from the system HD 169142 at angular resolution of $\sim 0".18 - 0".28$ ($\sim 20\,$au$ - 33\,$au). The dust continuum emission reveals a double-ring structure with an inner ring between $0".17-0".28$ ($\sim 20 - 35\,$au) and an outer ring between $0".48-0".64$ ($\sim 56 - 83\,$au). The size and position of the inner ring is in good agreement with previous polarimetric observations in the near-infrared and is consistent with dust trapping by a massive planet. No dust emission is detected inside the inner dust cavity ($R \lesssim 20\,$au) or within the dust gap ($\sim 35 - 56\,$au). In contrast, the channel maps of the $J=2-1$ line of the three CO isotopologues reveal the presence of gas inside the dust cavity and dust gap. The gaseous disk is also much larger than the compact dust emission extending to $\sim 1'.5$ ($\sim 180\,$au) in radius. This difference and the sharp drop of the continuum emission at large radii point to radial drift of large dust grains ($>$ \micron-size). Using the thermo-chemical disk code \textsc{dali}, the continuum and the CO isotopologues emission are modelled to quantitatively measure the gas and dust surface densities. The resulting gas surface density is reduced by a factor of $\sim 30-40$ inward of the dust gap. The gas and dust distribution hint at the presence of multiple planets shaping the disk structure via dynamical clearing (dust cavity and gap) and dust trapping (double ring dust distribution)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present 450 and 850 micron submillimetre continuum observations of the IC5146 star-forming region taken as part of the JCMT Gould Belt Survey. We investigate the location of bright submillimetre (clumped) emission with the larger-scale molecular cloud through comparison with extinction maps, and find that these denser structures correlate with higher cloud column density. Ninety-six individual submillimetre clumps are identified using FellWalker and their physical properties are examined. These clumps are found to be relatively massive, ranging from 0.5to 116 MSun with a mean mass of 8 MSun and a median mass of 3.7 MSun. A stability analysis for the clumps suggest that the majority are (thermally) Jeans stable, with M/M_J < 1. We further compare the locations of known protostars with the observed submillimetre emission, finding that younger protostars, i.e., Class 0 and I sources, are strongly correlated with submillimetre peaks and that the clumps with protostars are among the most Jeans unstable. Finally, we contrast the evolutionary conditions in the two major star-forming regions within IC5146: the young cluster associated with the Cocoon Nebula and the more distributed star formation associated with the Northern Streamer filaments. The Cocoon Nebula appears to have converted a higher fraction of its mass into dense clumps and protostars, the clumps are more likely to be Jeans unstable, and a larger fraction of these remaining clumps contain embedded protostars. The Orion A molecular cloud is one of the most well-studied nearby star-forming regions, and includes regions of both highly clustered and more dispersed star formation across its full extent. Here, we analyze dense, star-forming cores identified in the 850 {\mu}m and 450 {\mu}m SCUBA-2 maps from the JCMT Gould Belt Legacy Survey. We identify dense cores in a uniform manner across the Orion A cloud and analyze their clustering properties. Using two independent lines of analysis, we find evidence that clusters of dense cores tend to be mass segregated, suggesting that stellar clusters may have some amount of primordial mass segregation already imprinted in them at an early stage. We also demonstrate that the dense core clusters have a tendency to be elongated, perhaps indicating a formation mechanism linked to the filamentary structure within molecular clouds.

HBC 722 (V2493 Cyg) is a young eruptive star in outburst since 2010. It is an FU Orionis-type object with an atypically low outburst luminosity. Because it was well characterized in the pre-outburst phase, HBC 722 is one of the few FUors where we can learn about the physical changes and processes associated with the eruption. We monitored the source in the BVRIJHKs bands from the ground, and at 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m from space with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We analyzed the light curves and the spectral energy distribution by fitting a series of steady accretion disk models at many epochs. We also analyzed the spectral properties of the source based on new optical and infrared spectra. We also mapped HBC 722 and its surroundings at millimeter wavelengths. From the light curve analysis we concluded that the first peak of the outburst in 2010 September was due to an abrupt increase of the accretion rate in the innermost part of the system. This was followed by a long term process, when the brightening was mainly due to a gradual increase of the accretion rate and the emitting area. Our new observations show that the source is currently in a constant plateau phase. We found that around the peak the continuum was bluer and the H$\alpha$ profile changed significantly between 2012 and 2013. The source was not detected in the millimeter continuum, but we discovered a flattened molecular gas structure with a diameter of 1700 au and mass of 0.3 M$_{\odot}$ centered on HBC 722. While the first brightness peak could be interpreted as a rapid fall of piled-up material from the inner disk onto the star, the later monotonic flux rise suggests the outward expansion of a hot component according to the theory of Bell & Lin (1994). Our study of HBC 722 demonstrated that accretion-related outbursts can occur in young stellar objects even with very low mass disks, in the late Class II phase., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 3 online tables. We present the JCMT Gould Belt Survey's first look results of the southern extent of the Orion A Molecular Cloud ($\delta \leq -5\mathrm{:}31\mathrm{:}27.5$). Employing a two-step structure identification process, we construct individual catalogues for large-scale regions of significant emission labelled as islands and smaller-scale subregions called fragments using the 850 $\mu$m continuum maps obtained using SCUBA-2. We calculate object masses, sizes, column densities, and concentrations. We discuss fragmentation in terms of a Jeans instability analysis and highlight interesting structures as candidates for follow-up studies. Furthermore, we associate the detected emission with young stellar objects (YSOs) identified by Spitzer and Herschel. We find that although the population of active star-forming regions contains a wide variety of sizes and morphologies, there is a strong positive correlation between the concentration of an emission region and its calculated Jeans instability. There are, however, a number of highly unstable subregions in dense areas of the map that show no evidence of star formation. We find that only $\sim$72\% of the YSOs defined as Class 0+I and flat-spectrum protostars coincide with dense 850 $\mu$m emission structures (column densities $>3.7\times10^{21}\mathrm{\:cm}^{-2}$). The remaining 28\% of these objects, which are expected to be embedded in dust and gas, may be misclassified. The dust emissivity spectral index, $\beta$, is a critical parameter for deriving the mass and temperature of star-forming structures, and consequently their gravitational stability. The $\beta$ value is dependent on various dust grain properties, such as size, porosity, and surface composition, and is expected to vary as dust grains evolve. Here we present $\beta$, dust temperature, and optical depth maps of the star-forming clumps in the Perseus Molecular Cloud determined from fitting SEDs to combined Herschel and JCMT observations in the 160 $\mu$m, 250 $\mu$m, 350 $\mu$m, 500 $\mu$m, and 850 $\mu$m bands. Most of the derived $\beta$, and dust temperature values fall within the ranges of 1.0 - 2.7 and 8 - 20 K, respectively. In Perseus, we find the $\beta$ distribution differs significantly from clump to clump, indicative of grain growth. Furthermore, we also see significant, localized $\beta$ variations within individual clumps and find low $\beta$ regions correlate with local temperature peaks, hinting at the possible origins of low $\beta$ grains. We present SCUBA-2 450{\mu}m and 850{\mu}m observations of the W40 complex in the Serpens-Aquila region as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Survey (GBS) of nearby star-forming regions. We investigate radiative heating by constructing temperature maps from the ratio of SCUBA-2 fluxes using a fixed dust opacity spectral index, {\beta} = 1.8, and a beam convolution kernel to achieve a common 14.8" resolution. We identify 82 clumps ranging between 10 and 36K with a mean temperature of 20{\pm}3K. Clump temperature is strongly correlated with proximity to the external OB association and there is no evidence that the embedded protostars significantly heat the dust. We identify 31 clumps that have cores with densities greater than 105cm{^{-3}}. Thirteen of these cores contain embedded Class 0/I protostars. Many cores are associated with bright-rimmed clouds seen in Herschel 70 {\mu}m images. From JCMT HARP observations of the 12CO 3-2 line, we find contamination of the 850{\mu}m band of up to 20 per cent. We investigate the free-free contribution to SCUBA-2 bands from large-scale and ultracompact H ii regions using archival VLA data and find the contribution is limited to individual stars, accounting for 9 per cent of flux per beam at 450 {\mu}m or 12 per cent at 850 {\mu}m in these cases. We conclude that radiative heating has potentially influenced the formation of stars in the Dust Arc sub-region, favouring Jeans stable clouds in the warm east and fragmentation in the cool west., Comment: 27 pages, 25 figures, 7 tables, 3 online catalogues

The young star beta Pictoris is well known for its dusty debris disk, produced through the grinding down by collisions of planetesimals, kilometre-sized bodies in orbit around the star. In addition to dust, small amounts of gas are also known to orbit the star, likely the result from vaporisation of violently colliding dust grains. The disk is seen edge on and from previous absorption spectroscopy we know that the gas is very rich in carbon relative to other elements. The oxygen content has been more difficult to assess, however, with early estimates finding very little oxygen in the gas at a C/O ratio 20x higher than the cosmic value. A C/O ratio that high is difficult to explain and would have far-reaching consequences for planet formation. Here we report on observations by the far-infrared space telescope Herschel, using PACS, of emission lines from ionised carbon and neutral oxygen. The detected emission from C+ is consistent with that previously reported being observed by the HIFI instrument on Herschel, while the emission from O is hard to explain without assuming a higher-density region in the disk, perhaps in the shape of a clump or a dense torus, required to sufficiently excite the O atoms. A possible scenario is that the C/O gas is produced by the same process responsible for the CO clump recently observed by ALMA in the disk, and that the re-distribution of the gas takes longer than previously assumed. Hydrides are simple compounds containing one or a few hydrogen atoms bonded to a heavier atom. They are fundamental precursor molecules in cosmic chemistry and many hydride ions have become observable in high quality for the first time thanks to the Herschel Space Observatory. Ionized hydrides, such as CH+ and OH+, and also HCO+ that affect the chemistry of molecules such as water, provide complementary information on irradiation by far UV (FUV) or X-rays and gas temperature. The targeted lines of CH+, OH+, H2O+, C+ and CH are detected mostly in blue-shifted absorption. H3O+ and SH+ are detected in emission and only toward some high-mass objects. The observed line parameters and correlations suggest two different origins, related to gas entrained by the outflows and to the circumstellar envelope. The column density ratios of CH+/OH+ are estimated from chemical slab models, assuming that the H2 density is given by the specific density model of each object at the beam radius. For the low-mass YSOs the observed ratio can be reproduced for an FUV flux of 2-400 times the ISRF at the location of the molecules. In two high-mass objects, the UV flux is 20-200 times the ISRF derived from absorption lines, and 300-600 ISRF using emission lines. If the FUV flux required for low-mass objects originates at the central protostar, a substantial FUV luminosity, up to 1.5 L_sun, is required. There is no molecular evidence for X-ray induced chemistry in the low-mass objects on the observed scales of a few 1000 AU. For high-mass regions, the FUV flux required to produce the observed molecular ratios is smaller than the unattenuated flux expected from the central object(s) at the Herschel beam radius. The JCMT Gould Belt Legacy Survey obtained SCUBA-2 observations of dense cores within three sub-regions of Orion B: LDN 1622, NGC 2023/2024, and NGC 2068/2071, all of which contain clusters of cores. We present an analysis of the clustering properties of these cores, including the two-point correlation function and Cartwright's Q parameter. We identify individual clusters of dense cores across all three regions using a minimal spanning tree technique, and find that in each cluster, the most massive cores tend to be centrally located. We also apply the independent M-Sigma technique and find a strong correlation between core mass and the local surface density of cores. These two lines of evidence jointly suggest that some amount of mass segregation in clusters has happened already at the dense core stage., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 22 pages, 11 figures

We present a first look at the SCUBA-2 observations of three sub-regions of the Orion B molecular cloud: LDN 1622, NGC 2023/2024, and NGC 2068/2071, from the JCMT Gould Belt Legacy Survey. We identify 29, 564, and 322 dense cores in L1622, NGC 2023/2024, and NGC 2068/2071 respectively, using the SCUBA-2 850 micron map, and present their basic properties, including their peak fluxes, total fluxes, and sizes, and an estimate of the corresponding 450 micron peak fluxes and total fluxes, using the FellWalker source extraction algorithm. Assuming a constant temperature of 20 K, the starless dense cores have a mass function similar to that found in previous dense core analyses, with a Salpeter-like slope at the high-mass end. The majority of cores appear stable to gravitational collapse when considering only thermal pressure; indeed, most of the cores which have masses above the thermal Jeans mass are already associated with at least one protostar. At higher cloud column densities, above 1-2 x 10^23 cm^-2, most of the mass is found within dense cores, while at lower cloud column densities, below 1 x 10^23 cm^-2, this fraction drops to 10% or lower. Overall, the fraction of dense cores associated with a protostar is quite small (<8%), but becomes larger for the densest and most centrally concentrated cores. NGC 2023 / 2024 and NGC 2068/2071 appear to be on the path to forming a significant number of stars in the future, while L1622 has little additional mass in dense cores to form many new stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 28 pages, 19 figures. Performing ground-based submillimetre observations is a difficult task as the measurements are subject to absorption and emission from water vapour in the Earth's atmosphere and time variation in weather and instrument stability. Removing these features and other artifacts from the data is a vital process which affects the characteristics of the recovered astronomical structure we seek to study. In this paper, we explore two data reduction methods for data taken with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array-2 (SCUBA-2) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The JCMT Legacy Reduction 1 (JCMT LR1) and The Gould Belt Legacy Survey Legacy Release 1 (GBS LR1) reduction both use the same software, Starlink, but differ in their choice of data reduction parameters. We find that the JCMT LR1 reduction is suitable for determining whether or not compact emission is present in a given region and the GBS LR1 reduction is tuned in a robust way to uncover more extended emission, which better serves more in-depth physical analyses of star-forming regions. Using the GBS LR1 method, we find that compact sources are recovered well, even at a peak brightness of only 3 times the noise, whereas the reconstruction of larger objects requires much care when drawing boundaries around the expected astronomical signal in the data reduction process. Incorrect boundaries can lead to false structure identification or it can cause structure to be missed.
