1. Reduction of coherent betatron oscillations in a muon g − 2 storage ring experiment using RF fields

Abstract

This work demonstrates that two systematic errors, coherent betatron oscillations (CBO) and muon losses, can be reduced through application of radio frequency (RF) electric fields, which ultimately increases the sensitivity of the muon g − 2 experiments. As the ensemble of polarized muons goes around a weak focusing storage ring, their spin precesses, and when they decay through the weak interaction, ${\mu }^{+}\to {\mathrm{e}}^{+}{\nu }_{\mathrm{e}}\bar{{\nu }_{\mu }}$ , the decay positrons are detected by electromagnetic calorimeters. In addition to the expected exponential decay in the positron time spectrum, the weak decay asymmetry causes a modulation in the number of positrons in a selected energy range at the difference frequency between the spin and cyclotron frequencies, ω _a . This frequency is directly proportional to the magnetic anomaly a _μ = ( g − 2)/2, where g is the g -factor of the muon, which is slightly greater than 2. The detector acceptance depends on the radial position of the muon decay, so the CBO of the muon bunch following injection into the storage ring modulate the measured muon signal with the frequency ω _CBO . In addition, the muon populations at the edge of the beam hit the walls of the vacuum chamber before decaying, which also affects the signal. Thus, reduction of CBO and unwanted muon loss increases the a _μ measurement sensitivity. Numerical and experimental studies with RF electric fields yield more than a magnitude reduction of the CBO, with muon losses comparable to the conventional method.

Abstract

The magnetic shielding capability of bulk MgB2 hollow cylinders can be fruitfully combined with an external paramagnetic sheath, to tailor the shape of the external magnetic flux lines. By appropriate selection of the external sheath permeability and thickness, it is possible to leave the magnetic flux lines unaltered by the shield (cloaking effect). Preliminary measurements have been performed at 4.2 K on shielding capability of bulk cylinders, which are subjected to axial and transversal magnetic fields up to 5 T. The cloaking conditions have been modeled to find the optimized thickness to realize the cloaking effect. The MgB2 material of the superconducting shield is also optimized to avoid low-temperature flux jumps, without losing its shielding capability.

A new 2 MW proton machine, known as the “proton driver”, is being considered for Fermilab. It would play a key role in advancing accelerator-based neutrino physics. A workshop was organized in October 2004 at Fermilab to explore this physics case, as well as other physics that could be performed with this machine.

Abstract

How did the universe evolve? The fine angular scale (l>1000) temperature and polarization anisotropies in the CMB are a Rosetta stone for understanding the evolution of the universe. Through detailed measurements one may address everything from the physics of the birth of the universe to the history of star formation and the process by which galaxies formed. One may in addition track the evolution of the dark energy and discover the net neutrino mass. We are at the dawn of a new era in which hundreds of square degrees of sky can be mapped with arcminute resolution and sensitivities measured in microKelvin. Acquiring these data requires the use of special purpose telescopes such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), located in Chile, and the South Pole Telescope (SPT). These new telescopes are outfitted with a new generation of custom mm-wave kilo-pixel arrays. Abstract

The third generation South Pole Telescope camera (SPT-3G) improves upon its predecessor (SPTpol) by an order of magnitude increase in detectors on the focal plane. The technology used to read out and control these detectors, digital frequency-domain multiplexing (DfMUX), is conceptually the same as used for SPTpol, but extended to accommodate more detectors. A nearly 5x expansion in the readout operating bandwidth has enabled the use of this large focal plane, and SPT-3G performance meets the forecasting targets relevant to its science objectives. However, the electrical dynamics of the higher-bandwidth readout differ from predictions based on models of the SPTpol system due to the higher frequencies used, and parasitic impedances associated with new cryogenic electronic architecture. To address this, we present an updated derivation for electrical crosstalk in higher-bandwidth DfMUX systems, and identify two previously uncharacterized contributions to readout noise, which become dominant at high bias frequency. The updated crosstalk and noise models successfully describe the measured crosstalk and readout noise performance of SPT-3G. These results also suggest specific changes to warm electronics component values, wire-harness properties, and SQUID parameters, to improve the readout system for future experiments using DfMUX, such as the LiteBIRD space telescope., Comment: Accepted to the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems
