The purpose of the thesis is twofold (a) to review the relationship between alcohol use and emotion regulation, and (b) to develop and evaluate a newly designed questionnaire calIed the Brief Aspirations and Concerns in Life Inventory (BACLI) for measuring the structure of an individuals motivation for obtaining their life goals. First, this thesis presents a review of alcohol's roles in regulating emotions. This review paper proposes an integration of Cox and Klinger's (1988, 1990,2004) motivational model of alcohol use and Gross and Thompson's (2007) model of emotion regulation strategies. It aims to further the understanding of alcohol's role in regulating emotions. Tentative conclusions are made that alcohol can be used to enhance some emotion regulation strategies, albeit in many cases maladaptively. The empirical paper compares the outcomes and relationships between the BACLI questionnaire and a well-established and comprehensive Personal Concerns Inventory (PCI; Cox & Klinger, 2000). It also examines the relationship between other motivational and emotional variables and alcohol use and problems. The BACLI provided a good alternative to the PCI. In line with previous research, motivational variables were predictive of alcohol use and problems. Difficulties with emotion regulation also predicted greater drinking problems. Finally, these papers are discussed in terms of their implications for clinical psychology.

6. Developing and evaluating brief, computerised interventions for excessive drinkers

Abstract

The purpose of the thesis was (a) to evaluate brief interventions for excessive alcohol consumption, and (b) to develop and evaluate a new and improved questionnaire for measuring excessive drinkers' alcohol consumption. The first two studies evaluated two computerised opportunistic brief interventions, which were aimed at reducing the alcohol consumption of excessive drinkers. The third study developed and evaluated a new alcohol consumption questionnaire called the Typical and Atypical Drinking Diary (TADD). In Study One, heavy drinking university students (n = 88) were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Computerised BriefIntervention (CBI), Computerised Brief Intervention-Enhanced (CBI-E), or a non-intervention control group. The CBI was based on the principles of motivational interviewing and was designed to motivate participants to reduce their alcohol consumption by measuring their consumption and providing them with normative feedback about their level of consumption and the consequences of it. The CBI-E included the same drinking-related components as the CBI. Additionally, however, it aimed to motivated participants to reduce their drinking indirectly, by addressing their general motivational patterns that might interfere with the emotional satisfaction that they derived from goal strivings to resolve their personal concerns. It did so by administering a computerised version of the Personal Concerns Inventory and providing participants with feedback about the results ofthe assessment. Participants (n =75) were re-assessed 12 weeks after the intervention. Males in the two intervention groups significantly reduced their average weekly alcohol consumption, unlike those in the control group. Female students significantly reduced their average weekly alcohol consumption irrespective of their group allocation. Only those participants (both males and females) who received a brief intervention significantly reduced their binge drinking. In Study Two, heavy drinking hospital patients (n = 45) were randomly assigned to three groups (as described above) and were re-assessed (n = 26) after 13 weeks. None of the three groups significantly changed their average weekly alcohol consumption; however, the two intervention groups had a nonsignificant 52% decrease in consumption, and the control group had a nonsignificant 6% increase. In Study Three, the TADD was administered to 158 university students. The measures of alcohol consumption derived from it were compared with measures from the Khavari Alcohol Test (KAT; a self-reported quantity-frequency index of drinking) and the Timeline Followback interview (TLFB; a precise but time-consuming and labour-intensive measure of consumption). Significantly more closely than the KAT drinking indices, the TADD indices approximated those derived from the TLFB. These results suggest that the simpler TADD is a good alternative to the TLFB interview. The implications ofthe results of the three studies for future research are discussed.

Abstract

Military service, mental health, and gambling activities and motivations as predictors of problem gambling in a sample of UK AF veterans. Age-and-gender matched veterans (n = 1,037) and non-veterans (n = 1,148) completed an online survey of problem gambling, gambling motivation, mental health (depression and anxiety), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Past year problem gambling rates were higher in veterans compared to non-veterans. Veteran status predicted increased problem gambling risk. The relationship between problem gambling and gambling to cope with distress was significantly stronger among veterans. Veterans experiencing PTSD and complex PTSD (C-PTSD) were at increased risk of problem gambling. Overall, the present, findings contribute further international evidence that veterans are a population vulnerable to problem gambling. Veterans with PTSD or C-PTSD are most at-risk and may engage in problematic gambling to escape/avoid distress. Routine screening for gambling problems should be undertaken with current and former military personnel, and further research is needed on the interplay between gambling motivation and veterans' mental health. Abstract

Internationally, problem gambling is elevated in Armed Forces veterans compared to the general population. Here, we re-examined the prevalence of problem gambling in veterans and non-veterans residing in England using an established large dataset and investigated whether gambling was associated with length of service, common mental health disorders, substance abuse, or financial management history. Using the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, 257 post-national service veterans and 514 age- and sex-matched controls were compared. Veterans had significantly higher rates of problem gambling than non-veterans. Male veterans were more likely than non-veterans to have experienced a traumatic event. The relationship between veteran status and problem gambling was not explained by differences in mental health conditions, substance abuse, or financial management. No differences were found for length of service. Further research is required with larger samples targeting problem gambling and Armed Forces experience in the United Kingdom population using contemporary diagnostic criteria.

Abstract

Research on addiction recovery often focuses on traditional and well-established groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or SMART Recovery. Recently, another type of recovery group has emerged within communities. These groups are based around social activities and have not been studied in the literature. This study qualitatively identified individuals' experiences within these groups. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 10 abstinent members of social-based groups, who had previously experienced drug or alcohol dependence. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was employed on the transcripts to try and understand the individuals' experiences of being involved in these groups. Four themes emerged from the participants' experiences: (a) group's role in their recovery, (b) personal choice and flexibility in recovery experience, (c) group as an inclusive family unit, and (d) active involvement in the recovery group. These findings are discussed in relation to previous literature, and the value of these groups for recovering individuals is highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past few years, clouds have become an important terms in different domains. ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute) CCMA is one of Cloud developers especially on IaaS, called ITRI Cloud OS. ITRI Cloud OS is a comprehensive data center software stack. Inside this system, server virtualization, network virtualization, and storage virtualization are included to make Cloud OS serves virtual machines. Security is an important issue which is one of Cloud OS components. In this paper we represent security from different viewpoints in the system. Cloud OS could be deployed either as a public or private cloud. To host large number of VMs, horizontal scale up is a requirement. Security implementation should be adapted to support such an environment. ITRI Cloud OS could easily accommodate new VMs by adding new computing resources. In order to make cloud OS a secure environment, how we implement security protection and service level guarantee are discussed in this paper. Security protection means VMs are under protections through different mechanism and service level agreement (SLA). That is VMs running inside Cloud OS could have service guarantee even when resource is limited. To provide security protections, the following properties are built inside Cloud OS: multi-tenant support with tenant isolation including network as well as user data volume isolations; role-based distributed L3/L4 firewall, and automatic firewall setting in Cloud OS for enterprise firewall device; Distributed WAF protection; ARP spoofing; and DDoS mitigating system. In this paper, we present our security component's algorithms, system models, performance analysis, and performance evaluation results. To support SLA, we provide a distributed traffic shaping architecture. Through SLA policy setting, VMs can achieve guaranteed network bandwidth. We will present our distributed traffic shaping performance evaluation results which demonstrate the efficiency of Cloud OS.

Background: There are two main categories of retrospective self-report alcohol consumption measures: summary and daily drinking. Time-efficient summary measures have been criticized for being less able to capture sporadic and unpatterned drinking. A novel retrospective summary measure, the Typical and Atypical Drinking Diary (TADD), may produce more precise estimates of alcohol consumption than the gold-standard daily measure, the Timeline Followback (TLFB).Objective: To establish how accurately the TADD and TLFB retrospectively capture alcohol consumption compared to the Daily Drinking Diary (DDD) method.Method: Forty-three university undergraduates (77% female) concurrently recorded their daily alcohol consumption for 28 consecutive days using daily drinking diaries. Participants then retrospectively estimated their alcohol consumption using both the TADD and TLFB 28 days following completion of the 28-day daily consumption period.Results: When compared against the drinking data obtained from the DDD method, the TADD consistently produced accurate retrospective estimates of total alcohol consumption, number of drinking days, and number of heavy drinking episodes. Contrariwise, the TLFB significantly underestimated all aspects of drinking. Underreporting on the TLFB was hypothesized to be associated with social desirability bias.Conclusion: The TADD is a valid and reliable instrument for retrospectively measuring alcohol consumption and drinking variability in the university student population. Introduction and Aims: The Recovery Strengths Questionnaire (RSQ) is a 15-item self-report questionnaire that assesses an addicted individual's recovery strengths. This study aimed to validate the RSQ as a measure of recovery capital.Design and Methods: As part of a larger study, 151 participants in addiction recovery groups from across the UK completed the RSQ. Participants also completed the Assessment of Recovery Capital questionnaire and provided some demographic information.Results: The RSQ was found to be psychometrically sound, with high internal consistency and concurrent validity with the Assessment of Recovery Capital. RSQ scores were positively correlated with length of time in recovery and length of membership in recovery groups, and the scores could be used to discriminate between those in early and late recovery. Principal components analysis revealed a two-factor structure of recovery capital. These two factors were named 'within-group recovery strengths' and 'externally generated recovery strengths', and it was found that only the within-group factor scale (i.e. resources developed within recovery groups) predicted length of time in recovery and recovery groups.Discussion and Conclusions: These results highlight the important role that recovery groups can play in an individual's recovery, and they provide an alternative factor structure to the one-factor structure of the Assessment of Recovery Capital.
