2. To Tell or Not to Tell about Your Mental Health Problems? An Intervention for Students

Abstract

Worldwide, an increasing number of students in higher education have mental health problems. Talking about these problems at the university is often not that easy. Students fear to be stigmatised if they disclose their problems to others. However, if they do not disclose their problems, they may not get the support they often need. Existing interventions to help people with this disclosure-dilemma are not specifically aimed at students, and lack certain important aspects. Therefore, we developed an intervention to help students with making a personal, well-informed decision regarding whether or not to disclose their problems. We examined the experiences of students and professionals with the new intervention. Moreover, we studied whether the students were less concerned about disclosure and experienced less decisional conflicts after using the intervention. Students with mental health problems from three universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands completed questionnaires prior to the intervention, directly after and three months after. In addition, the educational professionals reported their experiences with applying the intervention. Both students and professionals appreciated the contents and structure of the intervention and students' level of concern about disclosure and level of decisional conflicts were lower after using the intervention.

Het boek biedt daarnaast praktische en toepasbare handvatten om deze jongeren binnen het mbo, hbo en wo te begeleiden bij het volhouden van hun studie.

De Begeleid Leren-interventie is ontwikkeld om studenten met psychische problemen te ondersteunen bij het volhouden van hun opleiding. In het COMPARE project onderzoeken we het effect van deze op maat gemaakte Begeleid Leren-interventie op het behouden van de opleiding, op studiesucces en op de tevredenheid van studenten met psychische problemen die studeren aan de Hanzehogeschool. In deze presentatie gaan we in op de eerste ervaringen van studenten en begeleiders met de Begeleid Leren-interventie.

Questa guida è organizzata in 5 parti. La Parte I offre una cornice di riferimento che cerca di mettere in evidenza il valore dell’istruzione come motore della crescita personale di ciascun individuo. La Parte II offre una panoramica delle caratteristiche di alcuni dei disturbi mentali più gravi e del potenziale impatto che queste caratteristiche hanno sui percorsi di studio delle persone che ne sono affette. La Parte III entra nello specifico della pratica dell’istruzione supportata, delineandone i capisaldi, i principi metodologici, le evidenze di efficacia, le diverse fasi nelle quali si sviluppa l’intervento, gli aspetti organizzativi di cui un servizio che intende offrire ai propri utenti un programma di istruzione supportata dovrebbe tener conto, nonché gli strumenti per valutarne gli esiti e il processo di implementazione. La Parte IV fornisce, invece, una panoramica di una serie di valutazioni e interventi psicosociali che, erogati in maniera coordinata e integrata a un programma di istruzione supportata, possono migliorare il funzionamento personale e sociale.
