Abstract

Preliminary results on activation and dose rates of thick copper targets irradiated with carbon ions at 0.1 GeV/A measured at the SIS-18 facility of GSI, Darmstadt and on residual nuclide production cross sections from thin copper and cobalt targets irradiated with carbon ions at 0.2 GeV/A measured at the TWAC facility of ITEP, Moscow are presented and compared with calculations by the Dubna version of the cascade model for nucleus-nucleus interactions realized in the code CASCADE and by the Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model code LAQGSM merged with the Generalized Evaporation Model code GEM2 by Furihata, LAQGSM+GEM2., Comment: Proc. 14th Int. Abstract

The influence of space charge on emittance growth is studied in simulations of a coasting beam exposed to a strong octupolar perturbation in an otherwise linear lattice, and under stationary parameters. We explore the importance of self-consistency by comparing results with a non-self-consistent model, where the space charge electric field is kept.

Abstract

In this paper we present a 3D simulation study of the emittance growth in a mismatched anisotropic beam. The equipartitioning driven by a 4th order space-charge resonance can be significantly modified by the presence of mismatch oscillation and halo formation. This causes emittance growth in both the longitudinal and transverse directions which could drive the beam even further away from equipartition. The averaged emittance growth per degree freedom follows the upper bound of the 2D free energy limit plus the contributions from equipartitioning.

Abstract

The focusing of heavy-ion beams on an indirectly driven inertial fusion target can be achieved under vacuum conditions in the reactor chamber. The effect wholly depends on the total current rather than the number of beamlets in the bundle, and hence determines the number of bundles to be used. A relatively large number of small emittance beams are required due to the performance limitations in the storage rings of the driver accelerator. The space charge effect is described as an increase of the entrance divergence angle, a current sensitivity of the focal spot and in terms of the effect of non uniform distribution. The first two are calculated by an envelop model and last by computer simulation methods.
