The expression of CD44 cell surface proteins and their interactions with extracellular hyaluronic acid (HA) were analyzed in rat BSp73 pancreatic carcinoma cells. The reduction-sensitive structure of the protein affects its HA binding properties in the NH2-terminal amino acid motif of rat BSp73 cell lines. However, alterations in the reduction-sensitive conformation of the cell surface protein eliminate its HA binding properties.

The use of coupled reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and high-field proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HPLC--NMR) for the detection and identification of the urinary metabolites of ibuprofen is described. Urine was obtained from a healthy human volunteer following a normal therapeutic dose of 400 mg of ibuprofen. Analysis was performed on both a freeze-dried urine concentrate and partialy purified extracts obtained by solid-phase extraction onto C- 18 bonded silica gel. Both continuous and stop-flow methods were used to obtain spectra enabling the major urinary metabolites of lbuprofen to be detected and identified., A technique for detecting and identifying ibuprofen and its metabolites in human urine is discussed. Thisinvolves the coupling of high-performance liquid chromatography to proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy which was applied by both continuous and stop-flow methods. The capacity of the coupled system for biological fluid and drug metabolite investigation was amply demonstrated.

Conflicts, present and past, have often a link to questions of borders, territories and space. In newer sociological theory the concept of relational space has been developed, to overcome the weak aspects of the absolute and the relative perception of space. This concept allows us to have a second glance at territories and place that are controversial. A result of this process is the insight, that several spaces can exist at a particular place. This concept of a relational space is exemplified on the street and information sings in the Romanian city of Oradea that has a strong Hungarian minority. In conclusion, proposals are given on how this theory could influence the practical work in the field of reconciliation and politics in areas in which the definition of space is crucial in the understanding the tensions that are occurring.
