A bioacústica é um ramo da biologia que investiga a comunicação sonora em diversos grupos de animais. Essa comunicação pode assumir papéis relevantes em diferentes contextos biológicos como: atração de parceiros sexuais, defesa de território, interações em grupo, orientação, procura de alimento e interações interespecíficas. De acordo com a Hipótese da Adaptação Acústica, os animais podem ajustar os sinais acústicos de acordo com o ambiente no qual se encontram, proporcionando maior eficiência na transmissão de informações e, consequentemente, divergências entre as populações isoladas. O quati, Nasua nasua, está distribuído amplamente na América do Sul, comumente associado a ambientes florestais. Destaca-se dentro da família Procyonidae pelas interações sociais complexas e habilidades sociocognitivas. O chirp é o tipo de chamado mais emitido pela espécie, com função de contato e manutenção da coesão do grupo. Apesar de sua ampla distribuição e complexidade social, esta espécie possui poucas informações acerca das particularidades do seu repertório acústico. Deste modo, este projeto tem como objetivo comparar os chirps emitidos por distintas populações da espécie N. nasua no sul de sua distribuição, com o intuito de detectar divergências entre populações, testando a Hipótese da Adaptação Acústica. A dissertação foi realizada em dois biomas, Mata Atlântica e Pampa, no Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil) e Artigas (Uruguai). As vocalizações foram obtidas a partir de armadilhas fotográficas (Bushnell) distribuídas nos biomas. Os áudios foram extraídos dos vídeos e os parâmetros obtidos a partir do software Raven Pro versão 1.5 (Cornell Lab of Ornithology). Os parâmetros temporais e espectrais dos chirps foram organizados em uma tabela, juntamente com as respectivas variáveis ambientais e dados de localização. Posteriormente, foram realizadas análises para verificar se há divergências entre as populações de cada bioma e em cada área e também foram criados modelos lineares entre os parâmetros sonoros dos chirps e variáveis ambientais. Foram encontradas diferenças significativas para todos os parâmetros sonoros em relação aos biomas. As variáveis ambientais que mais influenciaram esses parâmetros foram cobertura vegetal, latitude e velocidade do vento. Encontramos o mesmo padrão descrito na Hipótese da Adaptação Acústica, onde animais em ambientes com vegetação densa costumam vocalizar em frequências mais baixas, por conta da grande atenuação gerada pelas árvores, enquanto que em ambientes abertos as frequências são mais altas, onde esses obstáculos são mais escassos. Com a plasticidade vocal encontrada nos chirps de Nasua nasua, é possível que as populações mais distantes tenham se diferenciado na função de contato e manutenção da coesão do grupo, principalmente como resultado da pressão seletiva das características ambientais atuando sobre a estrutura desses sinais. Bioacoustics is a branch of biology that investigates sound communication in different groups of animals. This communication can assume relevant roles in different biological contexts such as: attraction of sexual partners, defense of territory, group interactions, orientation, foraging and interspecific interactions. According to de Acoustic Adaptation Hypothesis, animals can adjust their acoustic signals according to the environment in which they are, providing greater efficiency in the transmission of information and, consequently, divergences between isolated populations. The South American coati, Nasua nasua, is widely distributed in South America, commonly associated with forest environments. It stands out within the Procyonidae family for its complex social interactions and sociocognitive skills. The chirp is the type of call most emitted by the species, it has the function of contact and maintenance of group cohesion. Despite its wide distribution and social complexity, this species has little information about the particularities of its acoustic repertoire. Thus, this project aims to compare the chirps emitted by different populations of the species N. nasua in the south of its distribution, in order to detect divergences between populations, testing the Acoustic Adaptation Hypothesis. The dissertation was carried out in two biomes, Atlantic Forest and Pampa, in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and Artigas (Uruguay). Vocalizations were obtained from camera traps (Bushnell) distributed in the biomes. The audios were extracted from the videos and the parameters obtained from the Software Raven Pro version 1.5 (Cornell Lab of Ornithology). The temporal and spectral parameters of the chirps were organized in a table, along with the respective environmental variables and location data. Subsequently, analyzes were carried out to verify if there are divergences between the populations of each biome and in each area. Linear models were also created between the chirps sound parameters and environmental variables. Significant differences were found for all sound parameters in relation to the biomes. The environmental variables that most influenced these parameters were vegetation cover, latitude and wind speed. We found the same pattern described in the Acoustic Adaptation Hypothesis, where animals in environments with dense vegetation tend to vocalize at lower frequencies, due to the great attenuation generated by the trees, while in open environments the frequencies are higher, where these obstacles are scarcer. With the vocal plasticity found in the chirps of Nasua nasua, it is possible that the more distant populations have differentiated in the function of contact and maintenance of group cohesion, mainly due to the environmental pressure acting on the sound waves.
