Thanks to their multifunctionality, mobility and high data processing capacity, smartphones and their mobile applications have become a permanent companion for farmers in everyday life. This paper systematically analyses the mobile applications for agriculture available on the German market. The status quo (n = 1,214 apps) was recorded, systematically structured and descriptively evaluated based on the qualitative content analysis according to MAYRING (2015). A comparison of these results with the study by HOFFMANN et al. (2014) shows that the market offer for mobile apps is extremely dynamic. There are significantly more apps available for crop production (46.9%; n = 569) than for livestock farming (28.6%; n = 347). A vast majority (41.4%; n = 503) is used to provide information. The app ratings suggest that the majority of users are satisfied with the mobile apps available for agriculture., Agricultural Engineering, Bd. 78 Nr. 1 (2023)

Along the lower-middle São Francisco River, in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil, irrigated agriculture contributes to reduce rural poverty. In the framework of the Itaparica Reservoir construction, three irrigation schemes were implemented in the Pernambuco state to compensate the local population for flooded land. Despite favourable production conditions for irrigated agriculture, many smallholders in the irrigation schemes are facing poverty. To identify socio-economic key indicators on farm income, expert interviews (n=16) and a household survey (n=120) were conducted. The effect of socio-economic factors and crop choice on farm income was investigated by analysis of variance. Insufficient infrastructure, limited market access and low market power, volatility of producer prices, lack of credit availability, unequal distribution of irrigable land, and insufficient social capital and knowledge about irrigated fruit production threatened the smallholders’ livelihoods. Crop choice and availability of irrigable areas were the main characteristics of prosperous smallholders, whereas knowledge intensive and capital intensive perennials as well as high value annual cash crops with high risks of yield losses were the most profitable crops. Thus, wealthier farmers were more likely to generate high farm income. Agricultural extension, investments in infrastructure, especially in improved market access and value-adding facilities, and off-farm income alternatives are recommended to provide adequate income to the local population and prevent rural exodus.

Um die Einstellungen von Landwirten hinsichtlich der Nachhaltigkeit in der Landtechnikherstellung und des Nachhaltigkeitsengagements der Landtechnikhersteller zu ermitteln, wurden im Rahmen einer empirischen Untersuchung 273 Fragebögen (39 % von 700 versandten Fragebögen) ausgewertet. Bei den Teilnehmern der Befragung handelt es sich um Kunden der Landmaschinenfabrik Rauch GmbH und Leiter landwirtschaftlicher Ausbildungsbetriebe (z. T. Nicht- Kunden). Insgesamt wird das Engagement der Unternehmen hinsichtlich der Nachhaltigkeit von den Landwirten positiv bewertet. Insbesondere werden dabei Aspekte, die der sozialen Säule der Nachhaltigkeit zuzuordnen sind, mit Nachhaltigkeitsengagement in Verbindung gebracht, wie beispielsweise Maßnahmen zur Mitarbeiterausbildung. Darüber hinaus werden aus dem Bereich der ökonomischen Säule der Nachhaltigkeit die Zukunfts- und Innovationsorientierung besonders hervorgehoben. Construction of the Itaparica dam and reservoir induced changes in the agricultural production systems of the Itaparica micro-region, at the lower-middle São Francisco river basin. Extensive traditional systems were replaced by e.g. irrigated fruit production. However, over twenty years after the dam construction, many farmers are still facing income insecurity. A survey, consisting of expert interviews and structured on-farm interviews, has been conducted to analyze current production systems. A Linear Programming farm optimization model was applied to determine optimal land allocation considering changing production conditions. Income depended strongly on low wages for day laborers, free irrigation water, and stable prices of the main crop, coconut. Diversification of production and improved market access can help to improve farmers’ income situation. Moderate water pricing can raise the awareness of water scarcity and lead to implementation of water saving production methods.

Mit der Weiterentwicklung von Geräten und Mobilfunkstandards hat die private wie berufliche Nutzung internetfähiger Mobilgeräte stark zugenommen. Dadurch ergeben sich auch für das mobile Betriebsmanagement neue Potenziale. Diese Untersuchung erfasst den aktuellen Status quo hinsichtlich der Anwendung von Mobile Business in landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben in Deutschland. Der Fokus liegt auf der Ausstattung mit internetfähigen Mobilgeräten sowie der Art und Weise der Nutzung dieser Geräte. Verstärkt durch wiederkehrende Lebensmittelskandale in den vergangenen Jahren stieg auch die Nachfrage nach ökologisch produziertem Schweinefleisch. Um den besonders hohen Ansprüchen an die ökologische Produktion auch weiterhin gerecht werden zu können, nehmen mit steigendem Produktionsvolumen und ersten Skandalen in der ökologischen Schweinefleischproduktion nun auch hier die Bedürfnisse nach wirksamen Qualitätssicherungskonzepten auf allen Stufen der Wertschöpfungsketten zu. Die mit den gesetzlichen Regelungen und steigenden Qualitätsansprüchen der Verbraucher verbundenen Dokumentationsanforderungen stellen besonders die verbreitet kleinstrukturierten landwirtschaftlichen Betriebe der ökologischen Landwirtschaft vor große Herausforderungen. Um die in zunehmendem Umfang verfügbaren Daten zu nutzen, müssen diese nicht nur erfasst, sondern vor allem systematisch dokumentiert und zielgerichtet ausgewertet werden. Auch der Austausch von Informationen mit weiteren Teilnehmern der Wertschöpfungskette (z.B. zwecks Rückverfolgbarkeit) wird unabdingbar. Aus diesen Gründen nimmt auch in der ökologischen Schweinefleischproduktion das Interesse an betrieblichen und überbetrieblichen Managementsystemen zur Qualitätssicherung stetig zu. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist daher die Aufdeckung von Optimierungspotenzialen im Informationsmanagement, einem zentralen Element im Qualitätsmanagement der ökologischen Schweinefleischproduktion. Die vorliegende Untersuchung nähert sich in einem zweistufigen Verfahren dieser Zielsetzung. Zunächst werden durch Befragungen von insgesamt 30 Experten in 11 europäischen Ländern die generellen Stärken (u.a. hohe Qualität), Schwächen (u.a. kleine Bestandsstrukturen), Chancen (u.a. neue Märkte) und Risiken (u.a. billige Importprodukte) der ökologischen Produktion identifiziert und analysiert. Des Weiteren werden die Produktionsstrukturen und das Informationsmanagement vergleichend analysiert. Auch für Deutschland verdeutlicht sich das Spannungsfeld zwischen oft kleinstrukturierter, bäuerlicher Produktion und einer zunehmend industriellen Verarbeitung und Vermarktung. Mit dem Fokus auf die Primärproduktion werden im zweiten Teil dieser Studie ausschließlich ökologische Schweineproduzenten in Deutschland befragt. In Bezug auf das Informationsmanagement zeigt sich eine sehr gute Ausstattung mit Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien in den landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben. Für das Betriebsmanagement werden Computer und Internet jedoch bisher nur in wenigen Fällen genutzt. Ebenso zeigen sich zwar Ansätze eines kontinuierlichen Verbesserungsprozesses im Sinne der Qualitätssicherung in den Betrieben (durch Rückmeldungen und Maßnahmeneinleitung), verbreitet sind aber auch Mängel im Hygienemanagement (z.B. fehlende Stalldesinfektion). Transparent veranschaulicht werden die Zusammenhänge in dem in dieser Arbeit entwickelten Verhaltens-Akzeptanzmodell. Das Modell basiert auf einschlägigen Theorien zur Verhaltensforschung, Technologieakzeptanz und Nutzenoptimierung. In der abschließenden vergleichenden Faktorenanalyse können so bezüglich des Informationsmanagements zur Qualitätssicherung deutliche Unterschiede, sogar stark gegensätzliche Ergebnisse, in den aktuellen Aktivitäten zwischen spezialisierten und unspezialisierten Betrieben herausgearbeitet werden. Daraus lassen sich individuelle Bedürfnisse dieser zwei Betriebsformen ableiten. Handlungsempfehlungen, die sich daraus ergeben, sind beispielweise Aus- und Fortbildungsmaßnahmen, die an mehreren Stellen als hilfreiche Stellschraube eingesetzt werden können, um bspw. Grundlagen über fehlende Kenntnisse im Hygiene- und Qualitätsmanagement zu vermitteln. Die abschließende Diskussion der Ergebnisse fügt die Erkenntnisse der beiden Teilstudien sowie der einschlägigen wissenschaftlichen Literatur zusammen und lässt Schlussfolgerungen zu. Aus der ersten Teilstudie leiten sich demzufolge im Wesentlichen Notwendigkeiten für strukturelle Veränderungen ab. Eine industrielle, fokal strukturierte mit zunehmend großen Beständen und eine eher kleinstrukturierte auf Direktvermarktung ausgerichtete und regional orientierte Produktion. Da die technischen Grundlagen für ein effizientes Informationsmanagement in den Betrieben vorhanden sind, muss flächendeckend im Wesentlichen die Eigenverantwortung für Qualitätssicherung (z.B. durch gezielte Fortbildung) gefördert werden. Informationsmanagement muss als nutzenbringender Teil der landwirtschaftlichen Tätigkeit vermittelt werden. Die vorliegende Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass das Informationsmanagement zur Qualitätssicherung noch ganz am Anfang der Entwicklung, Implementierung und Nutzung steht. Fuelled by recurring food scandals in recent years, the demand for organically produced pork has also increased. In order to continue to meet the particularly high demands for organic production, the requirements for effective quality assurance concepts at all levels of the supply chain are also increasing, with increasing production volumes and the first scandals in organic pork production. The requirements for documentation associated with legal regulations and the increasing demands for quality made by the consumer present great challenges, particularly for the many small-scale farms of organic agriculture. In order to make use of the increasing breadth of available data, information must be not simply collected, but also analyzed in a targeted manner and sharing it with other members of the supply chain is vital. For these reasons, interest in operational and industry-wide management systems for quality assurance is steadily increasing, also in organic pork production. Therefore, the goal of the present study is to discover the optimization potentials for information management, a central element in quality management of organic pork production. The present study approaches this goal in a two-part process. First, the general strengths (e.g. high quality), weaknesses (e.g. small stock structures), opportunities (e.g. new markets) and risks (e.g. cheap import products) of organic production are identified and analyzed, using interviews with a total of 30 experts from 11 European countries. In addition, the production structures and information management are comparatively analyzed. The differences between often small-scale, rural producers and increasingly industrial operations and marketing are apparent for Germany as well. According to the interviewed experts, Germany is currently considered among the leading countries in information management, although it sometimes exhibits great potential, largely in primary production. With a focus on this sector of the supply chain, exclusively German organic pork producers will be surveyed in the second part of this study. In terms of information management, information and communication technologies appear to be well organized within the farming operations. Nevertheless, computers and internet are as yet only rarely used for operations management. Similarly, a movement towards a continuous improvement process in the context of quality management in the farms is taking place (via feedback and the introduction of measures), but deficiencies in hygiene management are also prevalent (e.g. failure to disinfect stalls). The cause study identifies the influencing factors within the framework of the factor analysis. The relationships are illustrated by the behaviour acceptance model developed in this study. The model is based on relevant theories on behaviour research, technology acceptance and benefit optimization. In the concluding comparative factor analysis, clear differences and even contrasting results were observed in the current activities between specialized and unspecialized farms, in terms of information management for quality assurance. As a result, individual needs are different for these two types of operation. The recommendations for action derived from this are, for example, advanced training and education opportunities that can be helpful in many ways including, for example, to provide the basic knowledge that is lacking in hygiene and quality management. The concluding discussion of the results brings together the findings of both parts of the study and ties them in with the relevant scientific literature, and conclusions are drawn. Hence, from the first part of the study, essential requirements for structural changes are derived. There are two possible directions for development for Germany, based on its established direct marketing and distinct organizational structures. One, an industrially and focally structured production with increasingly large stock populations and another, much smaller-scale production oriented toward direct marketing. Because the technical foundations for efficient information management in the farming operations are available, in essence the responsibility for quality assurance (e.g. through targeted education) must be encouraged across the country. Information management must be adopted as a profitable component of the agricultural activities. This study has shown that information management for quality assurance, and also above all industry-wide systems, are still in the early stages of development, implementation and use. However, there is a need for further research in other areas of the supply chain, as well as for detailed studies of this subject in other EU countries.

EU regulation 834/2007 harmonises the reglementations for the organic production within the EU. Nevertheless, due to national distinctions, the European organic pork production differs in structure of their supply chains (heterogeneity of production and processing). A broad spectrum in characteristics of organic meat programs are consequences. As a result of increasing requirements to quality assurance of products (such as EU regulation 178/2002), traceability becomes more important. Hence, the relevant information has to be selected and data have to be evaluated. These challenges also have to be managed by organic pig producers. A well structured information management, not only internal, but also inter-organisational is essential. This study shows potentials for improving information management in organic pork production chains in Europe.
