Platycephalids Ambiserrula jugosa (McCulloch 1914) and Inegocia harrisii (McCulloch 1914) were described as new species based on 10 and 2 specimens, respectively, collected from the coast of Queensland, Australia by the F.I.S. Endeavour in 1910. McCulloch (1914) listed additional specimens at the end of the description, which he did not exclude from the type series. Previous authors considered the specimens, which McCulloch stated the species to have been described from, to be types of the two species, it was revealed that all 43 and 9 specimens included in these species by McCulloch are type specimens, according to the fourth edition of International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, stating "type series of a nominal taxon consists of all the specimens included by the author in the new nominal taxon" in Article 72.4.1. In I. harrisii, it was assumed that a specimen later designated as the lectotype was figured with the original description. Because its plate legend includes the words "sp. nov. Type", the specimen is regarded to be the holotype of the species and the designation of the lectotype was unnecessary. This study newly recognizes additional 12 paratypes of A. jugosa and 5 paratypes of I. harrisii, and gives taxonomic accounts of the two species to show range extensions of intraspecific variation and distribution newly found. Platycephalid Hyalorhynchus pellucidus Ogilby 1910 was described based on four specimens collected from the coast of Queensland, Australia, by the F.I.S. Endeavour on 1910. Although previous authors considered the four specimens to be syntypes of the species, we consider that all 78 specimens included in the species by Ogilby are syntypes. This study also points out that a similar situation is recognized in some of the other species described by the publication. This study also attempts to specify syntypes deposited in several museums. The platycephalid genus Suggrundus Whitley 1930 was established as a replacement name for Insidiator Jordan and Snyder 1900 because the latter was considered to be preoccupied by Insidiator Oken 1842. Although Suggrundus has been regarded as valid, it was revealed in this study that Insidiator Oken 1842 is an unavailable name because no descriptions, definitions or indications for the name were shown. Although the name Insidiator Oken 1836 was shown in the list of a monograph, it is also unavailable because it lacked descriptions, definitions or indications. Insidiator Amyot 1845 is also an unavailable name as previously pointed out because the name was proposed in a non-binominal publication. Accordingly, Insidiator Jordan and Snyder becomes valid and Suggrundus is found to be an unnecessary replacement name. Insidiator Whitley 1930, being a junior homonym of Insidiator Jordan and Snyder, is newly recognized here as an available name because Whitley combined an unavailable generic name Insidiator Oken 1842 and available specific name insidiator from Sparus insidiator Pallas 1770 when he established Suggrundus. Repotrudis Whitley 1930 and Seychelliceps Prokofiev 2019 are synonymized here under Insidiator Jordan and Snyder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current paper describes three, highly distinctive, new species of Glossogobius from southern New Guinea and northern Australia. The species differ from other species of Glossogobius in the combination of small size (maximum size to 50 mm SL), strong sexual dimorphism in mouth and fin sizes and reductions of nape scales and head pores in two of the species. Allomogurnda multicincta, n. sp. is described on the basis of 168 specimens, 11-36 mm SL, collected from Malas Creek, a small tributary of the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. Morphological and preliminary genetic comparisons indicate it is closely related to A. nesolepis, which is widely distributed in northern New Guinea. The new species differs from A. nesolepis and all other members of the genus in typically having fewer predorsal scales (15-18 versus 15-24, but usually 19-21 for A. nesolepis and usually 18-27 for other congeners). Moreover, unlike other members of the genus, which have a peculiar scale orientation in the interorbital region, featuring many scales with freely exposed anterior margins, only the anteriormost 1-3 scales exhibit this condition in A. multicincta. The new species also differs from A. nesolepis and other congeners in possessing a unique colour pattern consisting of a series of relatively narrow brown bars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new species of the gobiid fish genus Glossogobius is described from Lake Mahalona and compared with a similar species, Glossogobius flavipinnis known only from Lake Towuti, Sulawesi in Indonesia. The new species is a dwarf species, lacking all head pores, a rare condition in the genus. The two Malili Lakes species treated here are allopatric and differ in several features, including colouration of the body and fins, markings on the head and body, fin-ray counts and degree of prolongation of the second dorsal spine in females. A diagnosis is provided for the genus and a full generic synonymy given including justification for the synonymy. Stupidogobius Aurich is regarded as a junior synonym of Glossogobius. A key is provided to the major species complexes of Glossogobius endemic to the Malili Lakes. Ecology and conservation of the two species are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amphidromous species of the Glossogobius celebius complex found in lower reaches rivers of the eastern Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean are reviewed. Glossogobius celebius is not as widely distributed as previously thought and is confined to the eastern Indian Ocean to eastern Indonesia. Three species are described as new species from Australia, New Guinea and various localities in the western Pacific. The species are distinguished on the basis of coloration, anal fin-ray and predorsal scale counts, head pores and papilla patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Xenisthmus chi n.sp., described from two specimens from Rowley Shoals, Timor Sea, has in combination: second dorsal-fin rays I,12; anal-fin rays I,11: predorsal area with narrow median wedge of scales extending forward almost to pore D; posterior naris without flap; and head and body pale with brown reticulate mottling, forming about 11 X-shaped markings along sides between pectoral- and caudal-fin bases. Xenisthmus eirospilus n.sp., described from 15 specimens from throughout the southwest Pacific (type locality Elizabeth Reef, Tasman Sea), has in combination: second dorsal-fin rays I,12-13, usually I,12; anal-fin rays I, 11-12, usually I,11 ; vertebrae [0 + 17; tongue indented; posterior naris with well-developed flap: upper sides of body with 12 large closely spaced spots, which usually do not extend to dorsal edge of body; and predorsal scaled to vertical through posterior edge of preopercle. Xenisthmus semicmctus n,sp., described from two specimens from Rowley Shoals, Timor Sea, has in combination: second dorsal-fin rays I,12: anal-fin rays I,11; vertebrae 10 + 17; tongue indented: posterior naris with well-developed flap; upper sides of body with 12 large, closely spaced spots, each connecting dorsally to, or almost to, mid-line by short, dark bar; and predorsal area with narrow median wedge of scales extending forward almost to pore D.
