The transition energies of the two $1s$-core-excited soft X-ray lines (dubbed q and r) from $1s^2 2s ^1S_{1/2}$ to the respective upper levels $1s(^{2}S)2s2p(^{3}P) ^{2}P_{3/2}$ and $^{2}P_{1/2}$ of Li-like oxygen, fluorine and neon were measured and calibrated using several nearby transitions of He-like ions. The major remaining source of energy uncertainties in monochromators, the periodic fluctuations produced by imperfect angular encoder calibration, is addressed by a simultaneously running photoelectron spectroscopy measurement. This leads to an improved energy determination of 5 parts per million, showing fair agreement with previous theories as well as with our own, involving a complete treatment of the autoionizing states studied here. Our experimental results translate to an uncertainty of only 1.6\,km/s for the oxygen line qr-blend used to determine the outflow velocities of active galactic nuclei, ten times smaller than previously possible., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We used the monochromatic soft-x-ray beamline P04 at the synchrotron-radiation facility PETRA III to resonantly excite the strongest $2p-3d$ transitions in neon-like Ni XIX ions, $[2p^6]_{J=0} \rightarrow [(2p^5)_{1/2}\,3d_{3/2}]_{J=1}$ and $[2p^6]_{J=0} \rightarrow [(2p^5)_{3/2}\,3d_{5/2}]_{J=1}$, respectively dubbed 3C and 3D, achieving a resolving power of 15\,000 and signal-to-background ratio of 30. We obtain their natural linewidths, with an accuracy of better than 10\%, as well as the oscillator-strength ratio $f(3C)/f(3D)$ = 2.51(11) from analysis of the resonant fluorescence spectra. Chiral crystals and molecules were recently predicted to form an intriguing platform for unconventional orbital physics. Here, we report the observation of chirality-driven orbital textures in the bulk electronic structure of CoSi, a prototype member of the cubic B20 family of chiral crystals. Using circular dichroism in soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission, we demonstrate the formation of a bulk orbital-angular-momentum texture and monopole-like orbital-momentum locking that depends on crystal handedness. We introduce the intrinsic chiral circular dichroism, icCD, as a differential photoemission observable and a natural probe of chiral electron states. The detection of inelastically scattered soft X-rays with high energy resolution usually requires large grating spectrometers. Recently, photoelectron spectrometry for analysis of X-rays (PAX) has been rediscovered for modern spectroscopy experiments at synchrotron light sources. By converting scattered photons to electrons and using an electron energy analyser, the energy resolution for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) becomes decoupled from the X-ray spot size and instrument length. In this work, we develop PAX towards high energy resolution using a modern photoemission spectroscopy setup studying Ba2Cu3O4Cl2 at the Cu L3-edge. We measure a momentum transfer range of 24% of the first Brillouin zone simultaneously. Our results hint at the observation of a magnon excitation below 100 meV energy transfer and show intensity variations related to the dispersion of dd-excitations. With dedicated setups, PAX can become an alternative to the best and largest RIXS instruments, while at the same time opening new opportunities to acquire RIXS at a range of momentum transfers simultaneously and combine it with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a single instrument.

We improve by a factor of 4-20 the energy accuracy of the strongest soft X-ray transitions of Fe XVII ions by resonantly exciting them in an electron beam ion trap with a monochromatic beam at the P04 beamline of the PETRA III synchrotron facility. By simultaneously tracking instantaneous photon-energy fluctuations with a high-resolution photoelectron spectrometer, we minimize systematic uncertainties down to 10-15 meV, or velocity equivalent $\pm\sim$5 km s$^{-1}$ in their rest energies, substantially improving our knowledge of this key astrophysical ion. Our large-scale configuration-interaction computations include more than four million relativistic configurations and agree with the experiment at a level without precedent for a 10-electron system. Thereby, theoretical uncertainties for interelectronic correlations become far smaller than those of quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections. The quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) material Rb$_2$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ has been proposed to display a nontrivial combination of low-dimensional fluctuations and a dynamical charge density wave (CDW) at ambient pressure. This may lead to a progressive metal to insulator cross over at low temperature. To explore the link between the crystal dimensionality and this insulating instability, we have performed hydrostatic pressure-dependent electrical transport measurements on single crystals of Rb$_2$Mo$_6$Se$_6$. At low pressure, we observe thermally-activated behaviour consistent with a temperature-dependent gap $E_g(T)$ opening below a characteristic temperature $T_{Rmin}$. Upon increasing the pressure $T_{Rmin}$ initially rises, indicating a reinforcement of the low temperature insulating state despite a continuous reduction in $E_g(P)$. We interpret this as a signature of suppressed fluctuations as the dimensionality of the electronic structure rises. However, $T_{Rmin}$ drops above 8.8 GPa and superconductivity emerges at 12 GPa. Between 12-24.2 GPa the superconducting and insulating instabilities coexist, with superconductivity surviving up to the maximum attained pressure (52.8 GPa). Analysis of the magneto-transport reveals two distinct regions: at high pressures the anisotropy gradually falls and the superconducting state appears unremarkable. In contrast, coexistence with the gapped insulating phase creates a superconducting dome. The emergence of a peak in the critical temperature Tc despite the depleted density of states is indicative of enhanced coupling. Our journey from the extreme 1D to 3D limits in this prototypical q1D metal reveals an intriguing relationship between superconducting and insulating ground states which is simultaneously competitive and symbiotic., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, including an appendix of 6 pages with 6 figures

Multiple dopant configurations of Te impurities in close vicinity in silicon are investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy, photoelectron diffraction, and Bloch wave calculations. The samples are prepared by ion implantation followed by pulsed laser annealing. The dopant concentration is variable and high above the solubility limit of Te in silicon. The configurations in question are distinguished from isolated Te impurities by a strong chemical core level shift. While Te clusters are found to form only in very small concentrations, multi-Te configurations of type dimer or up to four Te ions surrounding a vacancy are clearly identified. For these configurations a substitutional site location of Te is found to match the data best in all cases. For isolated Te ions this matches the expectations. For multi-Te configurations the results contribute to understanding the exceptional activation of free charge carriers in hyperdoping of chalcogens in silicon., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

One of the most enduring and intensively studied problems of X-ray astronomy is the disagreement of state-of-the art theory and observations for the intensity ratio of two Fe XVII transitions of crucial value for plasma diagnostics, dubbed 3C and 3D. We unravel this conundrum at the PETRA III synchrotron facility by increasing the resolving power two and a half times and the signal-to-noise ratio thousand-fold compared to our previous work. The Lorentzian wings had hitherto been indistinguishable from the background and were thus not modeled, resulting in a biased line-strength estimation. The present experimental oscillator-strength ratio $R_\mathrm{exp}=f_{\mathrm{3C}}/f_{\mathrm{3D}}=3.51(2)_{\mathrm{stat}}(7)_{\mathrm{sys}}$ agrees with our state-of-the-art calculation of $R_\mathrm{th}=3.55(2)$, as well as with some previous theoretical predictions. To further rule out any uncertainties associated with the measured ratio, we also determined the individual natural linewidths and oscillator strengths of 3C and 3D transitions, which also agree well with the theory. Recent improvements to spatial resolution in angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) have made it common to perform measurements with a very brief dwell time, for the purpose of mapping the spectral function over large surface regions. However, rapid measurement modalities can suffer a grid-like intensity modulation due to a wire mesh that is typically placed in front of the ARPES detector to block stray electrons. Here, we explore Fourier-based methods that can effectively remove this artifact, and improve the quality of ARPES images obtained in rapid scanning modes. Controlling spin wave excitations in magnetic materials underpins the burgeoning field of magnonics. Yet, little is known about how magnons interact with the conduction electrons of itinerant magnets, or how this interplay can be controlled. Via a surface-sensitive spectroscopic approach, we demonstrate a strong and highly-tuneable electron-magnon coupling at the Pd-terminated surface of the delafossite oxide PdCoO$_2$, where a polar surface charge mediates a Stoner transition to itinerant surface ferromagnetism. We show how the coupling can be enhanced 7-fold with increasing surface disorder, and concomitant charge carrier doping, becoming sufficiently strong to drive the system into a polaronic regime, accompanied by a significant quasiparticle mass enhancement. Our study thus sheds new light on electron-magnon interactions in solid-state materials, and the ways in which these can be controlled.

We present the discovery of a charge density wave (CDW) ground state in heavily electron-doped molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$). This is the first observation of a CDW in any $d^2$ (column 6) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD). The band structure of MoS$_2$ is distinct from the $d^0$ and $d^1$ TMDs in which CDWs have been previously observed, facilitating new insight into CDW formation. We demonstrate a metal-insulator transition at 85 K, a 25 meV gap at the Fermi level, and two distinct CDW modulations, $(2\sqrt{3}\times2\sqrt{3})$R$30^\circ$ and $2\times2$, attributable to Fermi surface nesting (FSN) and electron-phonon coupling (EPC), respectively. This simultaneous exhibition of FSN and EPC CDW modulations is unique among observations of CDW ground states, and we discuss this in the context of band folding. We resonantly excite the $K$ series of O$^{5+}$ and O$^{6+}$ up to principal quantum number $n=11$ with monochromatic x rays, producing $K$-shell holes, and observe their relaxation by soft-x-ray emission. Some photoabsorption resonances of O$^{5+}$ reveal strong two-electron--one-photon (TEOP) transitions. We find that for the $[(1s\,2s)_1\,5p_{3/2}]_{3/2;1/2}$ states, TEOP relaxation is by far stronger than the radiative decay and competes with the usually much faster Auger decay path. This enhanced TEOP decay arises from a strong correlation with the near-degenerate upper states $[(1s\,2p_{3/2})_1\,4s]_{3/2;1/2}$ of a Li-like satellite blend of the He-like $K\alpha$ transition. Even in three-electron systems, TEOP transitions can play a dominant role, and the present results should guide further research on the ubiquitous and abundant many-electron ions where electronic energy degeneracies are far more common and configuration mixing is stronger., Comment: Published in PRA

Since the discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the magnetically doped topological insulators (MTI) Cr:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ and V:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$, the search for the exchange coupling mechanisms underlying the onset of ferromagnetism has been a central issue, and a variety of different scenarios have been put forward. By combining resonant photoemission, X-ray magnetic dichroism and multiplet ligand field theory, we determine the local electronic and magnetic configurations of V and Cr impurities in (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$. While strong pd hybridisation is found for both dopant types, their 3d densities of states show pronounced differences. State-of-the-art first-principles calculations show how these impurity states mediate characteristic short-range pd exchange interactions, whose strength sensitively varies with the position of the 3d states relative to the Fermi level. Measurements on films with varying host stoichiometry support this trend. Our results establish the essential role of impurity-state mediated exchange interactions in the magnetism of MTI.

For more than 40 years, most astrophysical observations and laboratory studies of two key soft x-ray diagnostic $2p-3d$ transitions, $3C$ and $3D$, in Fe XVII ions found oscillator strength ratios $f(3C)/f(3D)$ disagreeing with theory, but uncertainties had precluded definitive statements on this much studied conundrum. Here, we resonantly excite these lines using synchrotron radiation at PETRA III, and reach, at a millionfold lower photon intensities, a 10 times higher spectral resolution, and 3 times smaller uncertainty than earlier work. Our final result of $f(3C)/f(3D) = 3.09(8)(6)$ supports many of the earlier clean astrophysical and laboratory observations, while departing by five sigmas from our own newest large-scale ab initio calculations, and excluding all proposed explanations, including those invoking nonlinear effects and population transfers., Comment: Main text (6 pages, 3 figures), Supplmentary Material (8 pages, 4 figure), Published in Physical Review Letters

We revisit charge density wave (CDW) behavior in the archetypal quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) material NbSe$_3$ by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements utilizing a microfocused laser with a photon energy of 6.3 eV. We present a detailed view of the electronic structure of this complex multiband system and unambiguously resolve CDW gaps at the Fermi level ($E_F$). By employing a tight-binding model, we argue that these gaps are the result of interband coupling between electronic states that reside predominantly on distinct 1D chains within the material. Two such localized states are found to couple to an electronic state that extends across multiple 1D chains, highlighting the importance of a higher-dimensional interaction in stabilizing the CDW ordering in this material. In addition, the temperature evolution of intrachain gaps caused by the CDW periodicities far below $E_F$ deviate from the behavior expected for a Peierls-type mechanism driven by nesting; the upper and lower bands of the renormalized CDW dispersions maintain a fixed peak-to-peak distance while the gaps are gradually removed at higher temperatures. This points toward a gradual loss of long-range phase coherence as the dominant effect in reducing the CDW order parameter, which may correspond to the loss of coherence between the coupled chains. Furthermore, one of the gaps is observed above the bulk and surface CDW transition temperatures, implying the persistence of short-range incoherent CDW order. We report on the electronic structure of $\alpha$-Sn films in the very low thickness regime grown on InSb(111)A. High-resolution low photon energies angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) allows for the direct observation of the linearly dispersing 2D topological surface states (TSSs) that exist between the second valence band and the conduction band. The Dirac point of this TSS was found to be 200meV below the Fermi level in 10-nm-thick $\alpha$-Sn films, which enables the observation of the hybridization gap opening at the Dirac point of the TSS for thinner films. The crossover to a quasi-2D electronic structure is accompanied by a full gap opening at the Brillouin zone center, in agreement with our density functional theory calculations. We further identify the thickness regime of $\alpha$-Sn films where the hybridization gap in TSS coexists with the topologically non-trivial electronic structure and one can expect the presence of a 1D helical edge states., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We present a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$. Four distinct bands are revealed and along the Ru-O bond direction their orbital characters are identified through a light polarization analysis and comparison to dynamical mean-field theory calculations. Bands assigned to $d_{xz}, d_{yz}$ orbitals display Fermi liquid behavior with fourfold quasiparticle mass renormalization. Extremely heavy fermions - associated with a predominantly $d_{xy}$ band character - are shown to display non-Fermi-liquid behavior. We thus demonstrate that Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ is a hybrid metal with an orbitally selective Fermi liquid quasiparticle breakdown.

We revisit the electronic structure of BaFe$_2$As$_2$, the archetypal parent compound of the Fe-based superconductors, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our high-resolution measurements of samples detwinned by the application of a mechanical strain reveal a highly anisotropic 3D Fermi surface in the low temperature magnetic phase. By comparison of the observed dispersions with ab-initio calculations, we argue that overall it is magnetism, rather than orbital ordering, which is the dominant effect, reconstructing the electronic structure across the Fe 3d bandwidth. Finally, we measure band dispersions directly from within one domain without applying strain to the sample, by using the sub-micron focused beam spot of a nano-ARPES instrument.

The electron dynamics in the CuO chains has been elusive in Y-Ba-Cu-O cuprate systems by means of standard angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES); cleaved sample exhibits areas terminated by both CuO-chain or BaO layers, and the size of a typical beam results in ARPES signals that are superposed from both terminations. Here, we employ spatially-resolved ARPES with submicrometric beam (nano-ARPES) to reveal the surface-termination-dependent electronic structures of the double CuO chains in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$. We present the first observation of sharp metallic dispersions and Fermi surfaces of the double CuO chains buried underneath the CuO$_2$-plane block on the BaO terminated surface. While the observed Fermi surfaces of the CuO chains are highly one-dimensional, the electrons in the CuO-chains do not undergo significant electron correlations and no signature of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid nor a marginal Fermi liquid is found. The lattice dynamics of members of the M2Mo6Se6 family of materials with guest ions M = K, Rb, Cs, In, and Tl has been studied using inelastic x-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy at room temperature, as well as by ab-initio calculations. We find a good match between calculations and experiment, both for structure factors (Eigenvectors) and for the calculated phonon frequencies. The observed lattice dynamics for Tl2Mo6Se6 show no signs of anharmonicity or absence of avoided dispersion crossings, thus ruling out previously hypothesised rattling phonon modes. The reduced mode energies for In2Mo6Se6 are identified as only partially responsible for the lower superconducting transition temperature Tc in this material when compared to Tl2Mo6Se6., Comment: 10 pages including appendix with raw data plots etc

Two-dimensional (2D) crystals have emerged as a class of materials with tuneable carrier density. Carrier doping to 2D semiconductors can be used to modulate manybody interactions and to explore novel composite particles. Holstein polaron is a small composite particle of an electron carrying a cloud of self-induced lattice deformation (or phonons), which has been proposed to play a key role in high-temperature superconductivity and carrier mobility in devices. Here, we report the discovery of Holstein polarons in a surface-doped layered semiconductor, MoS2, where a puzzling 2D superconducting dome with the critical temperature of 12 K was found recently. Using a high-resolution band mapping of charge carriers, we found strong band renormalizations collectively identified as a hitherto unobserved spectral function of Holstein polarons. The unexpected short-range nature of electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling in MoS2 can be explained by its valley degeneracy that enables strong intervalley coupling mediated by acoustic phonons. The coupling strength is found to gradually increase along the superconducting dome up to the intermediate regime, suggesting bipolaronic pairing in 2D superconductivity.

The mechanism of emergent bulk superconductivity in transition metal intercalated ZrTe3 is investigated by studying the effect of Ni doping on the band structure and charge density wave (CDW). The study reports theoretical and experimental results in the range of Ni0.01ZrTe3 to Ni0.05ZrTe3. In the highest doped samples bulk superconductivity with Tc < TCDW is observed, while TCDW is strongly reduced. Relativistic ab-initio calculations reveal Ni incorporation occurs preferentially through intercalation in the van-der-Waals gap. Analysis of the structural and elec- tronic effects of intercalation, indicate buckling of the Te-sheets adjacent to the Ni site akin to a locally stabilised CDW-like lattice distortion. Experiments by low temperature x-ray diffraction, angle-resolved-photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) as well as temperature dependent resistivity reveal the nearly unchanged persistence of the CDW into the regime of bulk superconductivity. The CDW gap is found to be unchanged in its extent in momentum space, with the gap size also unchanged or possibly slightly reduced on Ni intercalation. The charge density wave (CDW) in ZrTe3 is quenched in samples with small amount of Te iso-electronically substituted by Se. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we observe subtle changes in the electronic band dispersions and Fermi surfaces on Se substitution. The scattering rates are substantially increased, in particular for the large three-dimensional Fermi surface sheet. The quasi-one-dimensional band is unaffected by the substitution and still shows a gap at low temperature, which starts to open from room temperature. The detailed temperature dependence reveals that the long-range order is absent in the electronic states as in the periodic lattice distortion. The competition between superconductivity and CDW is thus linked to the suppression of long-range order of the CDW., Comment: 5 pages plus supplemental material (3 pages)

We report a comprehensive ARPES study of NaFeAs, a prototypical parent compound of the Fe-based superconductors. By mechanically detwinning the samples, we show that in the nematic phase (below the structural transition at $T_s$ = 54 K but above the antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ = 43 K) spectral weight is detected on only the elliptical electron pocket along the longer $a_{orth}$ axis. This dramatic anisotropy is likely to arise as a result of coupling to a fluctuating antiferromagnetic order in the nematic phase. In the long-range ordered antiferromagnetic state below $T_N$, this single electron pocket is backfolded and hybridises with the hole bands, leading to the reconstructed Fermi surface. By careful analysis of the $k_z$ variation, we show that the backfolding of spectral weight in the magnetic phase has a wavector of ($\pi$,0,$\pi$), with the $c$-axis component being in agreement with the magnetic ordering in NaFeAs observed by neutron scattering. Our results clarify the origin of the tiny Fermi surfaces of NaFeAs at low temperatures and highlight the importance of the three-dimensional aspects of the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe-based superconductors.

After the discovery of Dirac fermions in graphene, it has become a natural question to ask whether it is possible to realize Dirac fermions in other two-dimensional (2D) materials as well. In this work, we report the discovery of multiple Dirac-like electronic bands in ultrathin Ge films grown on Au(111) by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. By tuning the thickness of the films, we are able to observe the evolution of their electronic structure when passing through the monolayer limit. Our discovery may signify the synthesis of germanene, a 2D honeycomb structure made of Ge, which is a promising platform for exploring exotic topological phenomena and enabling potential applications.

We have performed angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on the surface states of SrTiO$_3$(001) using linearly and circularly polarized light to investigate the subband structures of out-of-plane $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals and chiral orbital angular momentum (OAM). The data taken in the first Brillouin zone reveal new subbands for $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals with Fermi wave vectors of 0.25 and 0.45 $\mathrm{\AA}^{-1}$ in addition to the previously reported ones. As a result, there are at least two subbands for all the Ti 3d t$_{2g}$ orbitals. Our circular dichroism ARPES data is suggestive of a chiral OAM structure in the surface states and may provide clues to the origin of the linear Rashba-like surface band splitting., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, Journal paper

We report evidence of a non-adiabatic Kohn anomaly in boron-doped diamond, using a joint theoretical and experimental analysis of the phonon dispersion relations. We demonstrate that standard calculations of phonons using density functional perturbation theory are unable to reproduce the dispersion relations of the high-energy phonons measured by high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. On the contrary, by taking into account non-adiabatic effects within a many-body field-theoretic framework, we obtain excellent agreement with our experimental data. This result indicates a breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation in the phonon dispersion relations of boron-doped diamond., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We report high resolution ARPES measurements of detwinned FeSe single crystals. The application of a mechanical strain is used to promote the volume fraction of one of the orthorhombic domains in the sample, which we estimate to be 80$\%$ detwinned. While the full structure of the electron pockets consisting of two crossed ellipses may be observed in the tetragonal phase at temperatures above 90~K, we find that remarkably, only one peanut-shaped electron pocket oriented along the longer $a$ axis contributes to the ARPES measurement at low temperatures in the nematic phase, with the expected pocket along $b$ being not observed. Thus the low temperature Fermi surface of FeSe as experimentally determined by ARPES consists of one elliptical hole pocket and one orthogonally-oriented peanut-shaped electron pocket. Our measurements clarify the long-standing controversies over the interpretation of ARPES measurements of FeSe.

Engineered lattices in condensed matter physics, such as cold atom optical lattices or photonic crystals, can have fundamentally different properties from naturally-occurring electronic crystals. Here, we report a novel type of artificial quantum matter lattice. Our lattice is a multilayer heterostructure built from alternating thin films of topological and trivial insulators. Each interface within the heterostructure hosts a set of topologically-protected interface states, and by making the layers sufficiently thin, we demonstrate for the first time a hybridization of interface states across layers. In this way, our heterostructure forms an emergent atomic chain, where the interfaces act as lattice sites and the interface states act as atomic orbitals, as seen from our measurements by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). By changing the composition of the heterostructure, we can directly control hopping between lattice sites. We realize a topological and a trivial phase in our superlattice band structure. We argue that the superlattice may be characterized in a significant way by a one-dimensional topological invariant, closely related to the invariant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Our topological insulator heterostructure demonstrates a novel experimental platform where we can engineer band structures by directly controlling how electrons hop between lattice sites.

We report a high-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (laser-ARPES) study of single crystals of FeSe, focusing on the temperature-dependence of the hole-like bands around the ${\rm \Gamma}$ point. As the system cools through the tetragonal-orthorhombic "nematic" structural transition at 90~K, the splitting of the $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ bands is observed to increase by a magnitude of 13 meV. Moreover, the onset of a $\sim$10 meV downward shift of the $d_{xy}$ band is also at 90~K. These measurements provide clarity on the nature, magnitude and temperature-dependence of the band shifts at the ${\rm \Gamma}$ point in the nematic phase of FeSe.

We use angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) to explore the electronic structure of single crystals of FeSe over a wide range of binding energies and study the effects of strong electron-electron correlations. We provide evidence for the existence of "Hubbard-like bands" at high binding energies consisting of incoherent many-body excitations originating from Fe $3d$ states in addition to the renormalized quasiparticle bands near the Fermi level. Many high energy features of the observed ARPES data can be accounted for when incorporating effects of strong local Coulomb interactions in calculations of the spectral function via dynamical mean-field theory, including the formation of a Hubbard-like band. This shows that over the energy scale of several eV, local correlations arising from the on-site Coulomb repulsion and Hund's coupling are essential for a proper understanding of the electronic structure of FeSe and other related iron based superconductors.

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data reveal evidence of a crossover from one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) behavior in the prototypical charge density wave (CDW) material NbSe3. In the low-temperature 3D regime, gaps in the electronic structure are observed due to two incommensurate CDWs, in agreement with x-ray diffraction and electronic-structure calculations. At higher temperatures we observe a spectral weight depletion that approaches the power-law behavior expected in 1D. From the warping of the quasi-1D Fermi surface at low temperatures, we extract the energy scale of the dimensional crossover. This is corroborated by a detailed analysis of the density of states, which reveals a change in dimensional behavior dependent on binding energy. Manipulation of spin and valley degrees of freedom is a key step towards realizing novel quantum technologies, for which atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been established as promising candidates. In monolayer TMDCs, the lack of inversion symmetry gives rise to a spin-valley correlation of the band structure allowing for valley-selective electronic excitation with circularly polarized light. Here we show that, even in centrosymmetric samples of 2H-WSe2, circularly polarized light can generate spin-, valley- and layer-polarized excited states in the conduction band. Employing time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) with spin-selective excitation, the dynamics of valley and layer pseudospins of the excited carriers are investigated. Complementary time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of the excited state populations reveal a strong circular dichroism of the spin-, valley- and layer-polarizations and a pronounced 2D character of the excited states in the K valleys. We observe scattering of carriers towards the global minimum of the conduction band on a sub-100 femtosecond timescale to states with three-dimensional character facilitating inter-layer charge transfer. Our results establish the optical control of coupled spin-, valley- and layer-polarized states in centrosymmetric materials and suggest the suitability of TMDC multilayer materials for valleytronic and spintronic device concepts.

Detection of Dirac, Majorana and Weyl fermions in real materials may significantly strengthen the bridge between high-energy and condensed-matter physics. While the presence of Dirac fermions is well established in graphene and topological insulators, Majorana particles have been reported recently and evidence for Weyl fermions in non-centrosymmetric crystals has been found only a couple of months ago, the 'magnetic' Weyl fermions are still elusive despite numerous theoretical predictions and intense experimental search. In order to detect a time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl state we designed two materials with Fermi velocities superior to that of graphene and present here the experimental evidence of the realization of such a state in one of them, YbMnBi2. We model the time reversal symmetry breaking observed by magnetization measurements by a canted antiferromagnetic state and find a number of Weyl points both above and below the Fermi level. Using angle-resolved photoemission, we directly observe these latter Weyl points and a hallmark of the exotic state - the arc of the surface states which connects these points. We report a study of the Ca$_{0.73}$La$_{0.27}$FeAs$_2$ single crystals. We unravel a monoclinic to triclinic phase transition at 58 K, and a paramagnetic to stripe antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition at 54 K, below which spins order 45$^\circ$ away from the stripe direction. Furthermore, we demonstrate this material is substantially structurally untwinned at ambient pressure with the formation of spin rotation walls (S-walls). Finally, in addition to the central-hole and corner-electron Fermi pockets usually appearing in Fe pnictide superconductors, angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements resolve a Fermiology where an extra electron pocket of mainly As chain character exists at the Brillouin zone edge., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Near-surface two-dimensional electron gases on the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se are induced by electron doping and studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A pronounced spin-orbit splitting is observed for these states. The $k$-dependent splitting is strongly anisotropic to a degree where a large splitting ($\approx 0.06$ \AA$^{-1}$) can be found in the $\bar{\Gamma}\bar{M}$ direction while the states are hardly split along $\bar{\Gamma}\bar{K}$. The direction of the anisotropy is found to be qualitatively inconsistent with results expected for a third-order anisotropic Rashba Hamiltonian. However, a $\mathbf{k} \cdot \mathbf{p}$ model that includes the possibility of band structure anisotropy as well as both isotropic and anisotropic third order Rashba splitting can explain the results. The isotropic third order contribution to the Rashba Hamiltonian is found to be negative, reducing the energy splitting at high $k$. The interplay of band structure, higher order Rashba effect and tuneable doping offers the opportunity to engineer not only the size of the spin-orbit splitting but also its direction., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a fundamental interaction in solids which can induce a broad spectrum of unusual physical properties from topologically non-trivial insulating states to unconventional pairing in superconductors. In iron-based superconductors (IBS) its role has so far been considered insignificant with the models based on spin- or orbital fluctuations pairing being the most advanced in the field. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we directly observe a sizeable spin-orbit splitting in all main families of IBS. We demonstrate that its impact on the low-energy electronic structure and details of the Fermi surface topology is much stronger than that of possible nematic ordering. Intriguingly, the largest pairing gap is always supported exactly by SOC-induced Fermi surfaces., Comment: Significant spin-orbit coupling is observed in all families of IBS. Figures 3 and 4 are new. We characterize the electron doping evolution of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission. Concomitant with the metal insulator transition around $x\approx0.05$ we find the emergence of coherent quasiparticle states forming a closed small Fermi surface of volume $3x/2$, where $x$ is the independently measured La concentration. The quasiparticle weight $Z$ remains large along the entire Fermi surface, consistent with the moderate renormalization of the low-energy dispersion. This indicates a conventional, weakly correlated Fermi liquid state with a momentum independent residue $Z\approx0.5$ in lightly doped Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7&., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Magnetite, Fe$_3$O$_4$, is the first magnetic material discovered and utilized by mankind in Ancient Greece, yet it still attracts attention due to its puzzling properties. This is largely due to the quest for a full and coherent understanding of the Verwey transition that occurs at $T_V=124$ K and is associated with a drop of electric conductivity and a complex structural phase transition. A recent detailed analysis of the structure, based on single crystal diffraction, suggests that the electron localization pattern contains linear three-Fe-site units, the so-called trimerons. Here we show that whatever the electron localization pattern is, it partially survives up to room temperature as short-range correlations in the high-temperature cubic phase, easily discernible by diffuse scattering. Additionally, {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations reveal that characteristic features in these diffuse scattering patterns can be correlated with the Fermi surface topology., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures
