Search

Type II supernovae (SNeII) mark the endpoint in the lives of hydrogen-rich massive stars. Their large explosion energies and luminosities allow us to measure distances, metallicities, and star formation rates into the distant Universe. To fully exploit their use in answering different astrophysical problems, high-quality low-redshift data sets are required. Such samples are vital to understand the physics of SNeII, but also to serve as calibrators for distinct - and often lower-quality - samples. We present uBgVri optical and YJH near-infrared (NIR) photometry for 94 low-redshift SNeII observed by the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP). A total of 9817 optical and 1872 NIR photometric data points are released, leading to a sample of high-quality SNII light curves during the first ~150 days post explosion on a well-calibrated photometric system. The sample is presented and its properties are analysed and discussed through comparison to literature events. We also focus on individual SNeII as examples of classically defined subtypes and outlier objects. Making a cut in the plateau decline rate of our sample (s2), a new subsample of fast-declining SNeII is presented. The sample has a median redshift of 0.015, with the nearest event at 0.001 and the most distant at 0.07. At optical wavelengths (V), the sample has a median cadence of 4.7 days over the course of a median coverage of 80 days. In the NIR (J), the median cadence is 7.2 days over the course of 59 days. The fast-declining subsample is more luminous than the full sample and shows shorter plateau phases. Of the non-standard SNeII highlighted, SN2009A particularly stands out with a steeply declining then rising light curve, together with what appears to be two superimposed P-Cygni profiles of H-alpha in its spectra. Near-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy provide high-resolution imaging below the diffraction limit, crucial in physics, chemistry, and biology for studying molecules, nanoparticles, and viruses. These techniques use a sharp metallic tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM) to enhance incoming and scattered light by excited near-fields at the tip apex leading to high sensitivity and a spatial resolution of a few nanometers. However, this restricts the near-field orientation to out-of-plane polarization, limiting optical polarization choices. We introduce double tips that offer in-plane polarization for enhanced imaging and spectroscopy. These double tips provide superior enhancement over single tips, although with a slightly lower spatial resolution (~30nm). They enable advanced studies of nanotubes, graphene defects, and transition metal dichalcogenides, benefiting from polarization control. The double tips allow varied polarization in tip-enhanced Raman scattering and selective excitation of transverse-electric and -magnetic polaritons, expanding the range of nanoscale samples that can be studied.

Plasmonic double helical antennas are a means to funnel circularly polarized states of light down to the nanoscale. Here, an existing design tool for single helices is extended to the case of double helices and used to design antennas that combine large chiroptical interaction strength with highly directional light emission. Full-field numerical modeling underpins the design and provides additional insight into surface charge distributions and resonance widths. The experimentally realized double helical antennas were studied regarding their polarization-dependent transmission behavior resulting in a large and broadband dissymmetry factor in the visible range. Since the polarization of light is an important tool for implementing logic functionality in photonic and quantum photonic devices, these helices are potential building blocks for future nanophotonic circuits, but also for chiral metamaterials or phase plates., Comment: 11 pages with Supporting Information, 10 figures

The origin of strong sodium absorption, which has been observed for a few nearby Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), remains elusive. Here we analyse two high-signal-to-noise, intermediate-resolution VLT/X-shooter spectra at epochs $+$18 and $+$27 days past peak brightness of the strongly lensed and multiply-imaged Type Ia SN 2016geu which exploded at a redshift of $z = 0.4$. We show that SN 2016geu exhibits very strong, multiple Na I and Ca II absorption lines with a large total Na I D restframe equivalent width of 5.2 $\pm$ 0.2 A, among the highest ever detected for a SN Ia and similar to only a handful of nearby SNe Ia with extraordinary large Na I D EWs. The absorption system is time-invariant and extends over a large velocity span $\sim$ 250 km s$^{-1}$. The majority of the absorption is blueshifted relative to the strongest component, while there are both blueshifted and redshifted components relative to the systemic redshift of the galaxy. The column density ratios and widths of the absorption lines indicate that the absorption likely arises from a combination of interstellar dusty molecular clouds and circumgalactic in- and outflowing material, rather than circumstellar matter around the SN., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Understanding the nature of the luminous 1991T-like supernovae is of great importance to supernova cosmology as they are likely to have been more common in the early universe. In this paper we explore the observational properties of 1991T-like supernovae to study their relationship to other luminous, slow-declining Type~Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). From the spectroscopic and photometric criteria defined in Phillips et al. (1992), we identify 17 1991T-like supernovae from the literature. Combining these objects with ten 1991T-like supernovae from the Carnegie Supernova Project-II, the spectra, light curves, and colors of these events, along with their host galaxy properties, are examined in detail. We conclude that 1991T-like supernovae are closely related in essentially all of their UV, optical, and near-infrared properties -- as well as their host galaxy parameters -- to the slow-declining subset of Branch core-normal supernovae and to the intermediate 1999aa-like events, forming a continuum of luminous SNe Ia. The overriding difference between these three subgroups appears to be the extent to which $^{56}$Ni mixes into the ejecta, producing the pre-maximum spectra dominated by Fe III absorption, the broader UV light curves, and the higher luminosities that characterize the 1991T-like events. Nevertheless, the association of 1991T-like SNe with the rare Type Ia CSM supernovae would seem to run counter to this hypothesis, in which case 1991T-like events may form a separate subclass of SNe Ia, possibly arising from single-degenerate progenitor systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

Direct electron beam writing is a powerful tool for fabricating complex nanostructures in a single step. The electron beam locally cleaves the molecules of an adsorbed gaseous precursor to form a deposit, similar to 3D printing but without the need for a resist or development step. Here, we employ for the first time a silver $\beta$-diketonate precursor for focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID). The used compound (hfac)AgPMe$_3$ operates at an evaporation temperature of 70 - 80{\deg}C and is compatible with commercially available gas injection systems used in any standard scanning electron microscope. Growth of smooth 3D geometries could be demonstrated for tightly focused electron beams, albeit with low silver contents in the deposit volume. The electron beam induced deposition proved sensitive to the irradiation conditions leading to varying compositions of the deposit and internal inhomogeneities such as the formation of a layered structure consisting of a pure silver layer at the interface to the substrate covered by a deposit layer with low silver content. Imaging after the deposition process revealed morphological changes such as the growth of silver particles on the surface. While these effects complicate the application for 3D printing, the unique deposit structure with a thin, compact silver film beneath the deposit body is interesting from a fundamental point of view and may offer additional opportunities for applications., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

We present the second and final release of optical spectroscopy of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) obtained during the first and second phases of the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP-I and CSP-II). The newly released data consist of 148 spectra of 30 SNe Ia observed in the course of the CSP-I, and 234 spectra of 127 SNe Ia obtained during the CSP-II. We also present 216 optical spectra of 46 historical SNe Ia, including 53 spectra of 30 SNe Ia observed by the Cal\'an/Tololo Supernova Survey. We combine these observations with previously published CSP data and publicly-available spectra to compile a large sample of measurements of spectroscopic parameters at maximum light, consisting of pseudo-equivalent widths and expansion velocities of selected features, for 232 CSP and historical SNe Ia (including more than 1000 spectra). Finally, we review some of the strongest correlations between spectroscopic and photometric properties of SNe Ia. Specifically, we define two samples: one consisting of SNe Ia discovered by targeted searches (most of them CSP-I objects) and the other composed of SNe Ia discovered by untargeted searches, which includes most of the CSP-II objects. The analysed correlations are similar for both samples. We find a larger incidence of SNe Ia belonging to the Cool (CL)and Broad Line (BL) Branch subtypes among the events discovered by targeted searches, Shallow Silicon (SS) SNe Ia are present with similar frequencies in both samples, while Core Normal (CN) SNe Ia are more frequent in untargeted searches., Comment: 59 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. We present a JWST MIRI/MRS spectrum (5-27 $\mathrm{\mu}$m) of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), SN 2021aefx at $+415$ days past $B$-band maximum. The spectrum, which was obtained during the iron-dominated nebular phase, has been analyzed in combination with previous JWST observations of SN 2021aefx, to provide the first JWST time series analysis of an SN Ia. We find the temporal evolution of the [Co III] 11.888 $\mathrm{\mu}$m feature directly traces the decay of $^{56}$Co. The spectra, line profiles, and their evolution are analyzed with off-center delayed-detonation models. Best fits were obtained with White Dwarf (WD) central densities of $\rho_c=0.9-1.1\times 10^9$g cm$^{-3}$, a WD mass of M$_{\mathrm{WD}}$=1.33-1.35M$_\odot$, a WD magnetic field of $\approx10^6$G, and an off-center deflagration-to-detonation transition at $\approx$ 0.5 $M_\odot$ seen opposite to the line of sight of the observer (-30). The inner electron capture core is dominated by energy deposition from $\gamma$-rays whereas a broader region is dominated by positron deposition, placing SN 2021aefx at +415 d in the transitional phase of the evolution to the positron-dominated regime. The formerly `flat-tilted' profile at 9 $\mathrm{\mu}$m now has significant contribution from [Ni IV], [Fe II], and [Fe III] and less from [Ar III], which alters the shape of the feature as positrons excite mostly the low-velocity Ar. Overall, the strength of the stable Ni features in the spectrum is dominated by positron transport rather than the Ni mass. Based on multi-dimensional models, our analysis is consistent with a single-spot, close-to-central ignition with an indication for a pre-existing turbulent velocity field, and excludes a multiple-spot, off-center ignition., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a method of extrapolating the spectroscopic behavior of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength regime up to 2.30 $\mu$m using optical spectroscopy. Such a process is useful for accurately estimating K-corrections and other photometric quantities of SNe Ia in the NIR. Principal component analysis is performed on data consisting of Carnegie Supernova Project I & II optical and near-infrared FIRE spectra to produce models capable of making these extrapolations. This method differs from previous spectral template methods by not parameterizing models strictly by photometric light-curve properties of SNe Ia, allowing for more flexibility of the resulting extrapolated NIR flux. A difference of around -3.1% to -2.7% in the total integrated NIR flux between these extrapolations and the observations is seen here for most test cases including Branch core-normal and shallow-silicon subtypes. However, larger deviations from the observation are found for other tests, likely due to the limited high-velocity and broad-line SNe Ia in the training sample. Maximum-light principal components are shown to allow for spectroscopic predictions of the color-stretch light-curve parameter, $s_{BV}$, within approximately $\pm$0.1 units of the value measured with photometry. We also show these results compare well with NIR templates, although in most cases the templates are marginally more fitting to observations, illustrating a need for more concurrent optical+NIR spectroscopic observations to truly understand the diversity of SNe Ia in the NIR., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, ApJ, in press

Plasmonic antennas with helical geometry are capable transducers between linearly polarized dipole emission and purely circular polarized far-fields. Besides large Purcell enhancements they possess a wide tunability due to the geometry dependence of their resonant modes. Here, the coupling of a dipole emitter embedded in a thin film to plasmonic single and double helices is numerically studied. Using a higher-order finite element method (FEM) the wavelength dependent Purcell enhancement of a dipole with different positions and orientations is calculated and the far-fields with respect to their chirality and radiation patterns are analyzed. Both single and double helices demonstrate highly directional and circularly polarized far-fields for resonant excitation but with significantly improved directional radiation for the case of double helices.

We present JWST spectral and photometric observations of the Type IIP supernova (SN) 2022acko at ~50 days past explosion. These data are the first JWST spectral observations of a core-collapse SN. We identify ~30 different H I features, other features associated with products produced from the CNO cycle, and s-process elements such as Sc II and Ba II. By combining the JWST spectra with ground-based optical and NIR spectra, we construct a full Spectral Energy Distribution from 0.4 to 25 microns and find that the JWST spectra are fully consistent with the simultaneous JWST photometry. The data lack signatures of CO formation and we estimate a limit on the CO mass of < 10^{-8} solar mass. We demonstrate how the CO fundamental band limits can be used to probe underlying physics during stellar evolution, explosion, and the environment. The observations indicate little mixing between the H envelope and C/O core in the ejecta and show no evidence of dust. The data presented here set a critical baseline for future JWST observations, where possible molecular and dust formation may be seen.

Spin-orbit torques (SOTs) act as efficient drivers for nanoscale magnetic systems, such as in magnetic tunnel junctions, nano-oscillators and racetrack geometries. In particular, in combination with materials exhibiting high Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction, SOTs are considered to result in well-controlled deterministic magnetisation dynamics and are, therefore, used as robust drives to move and create magnetic skyrmions. In contrast to these expectations, we here find unpredictable, transiently chaotic dynamics induced by SOT at an artificial anisotropy-engineered defect in a magnetic racetrack. Based on these controlled conditions, we directly observe the nanoscale dynamics with holography-based, time-resolved x-ray imaging. In concert with micromagnetic simulations, we disclose a regime of violent picosecond fluctuations, including topological instabilities that, remarkably, result in deterministic final configurations. In addition, our images expose previously unseen skyrmion shedding and highlight the potential of transiently chaotic pathways for topological switching. Our approach offers new perspectives for the investigation and application of highly non-linear SOT dynamics in spintronics materials.

Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) is an established method for producing high-purity thin films, but it typically necessitates the pre- and post-processing of a mask to produce structures. This paper presents a novel maskless patterning technique that enables area selective CVD of gold. A focused electron beam is used to decompose the metal-organic precursor Au(acac)Me$_2$ locally, thereby creating an autocatalytically active seed layer for subsequent CVD with the same precursor. The procedure can be included in the same CVD cycle without the need for clean room lithographic processing. Moreover, it operates at low temperatures of 80 {\deg}C, over 200 K lower than standard CVD temperatures for this precursor, reducing thermal load on the specimen. Given that electron beam seeding operates on any even moderately conductive surface, the process does not constrain device design. This is demonstrated by the example of vertical nanostructures with high aspect ratios of around 40:1 and more. Written using a focused electron beam and the same precursor, these nanopillars exhibit catalytically active nuclei on their surface. Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, i.e., materials with a vanishing real part of the permittivity, have become an increasingly desirable platform for exploring linear and nonlinear optical phenomena in nanophotonic and on-chip environments. ENZ materials inherently enhance electric fields for properly chosen interaction scenarios, host extreme nonlinear optical effects, and lead to other intriguing phenomena. To date, studies in the optical domain have mainly focused on nanoscopically thin films of ENZ materials and their interaction with light and other nanostructured materials. Here, we experimentally and numerically explore the optical response of individual nanostructures milled into an ENZ material. For the study, we employ 3D structured light beams, allowing us to fully control polarization-dependent field enhancements enabled by a tailored illumination and a vanishing permittivity. Our studies provide insight between complex near-fields and the ENZ regime while showcasing the polarization-dependent controllability they feature. We present an eigenfunction method to analyze 161 visual light curves (LCs) of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project to characterize their diversity and host-galaxy correlations. The eigenfunctions are based on the delayed-detonation scenario using three parameters: the LC stretch being determined by the amount of deflagration-burning governing the 56Ni production, the main-sequence mass M_MS of the progenitor white dwarf controlling the explosion energy, and its central density rho_c shifting the 56Ni distribution. Our analysis tool (SPAT) extracts the parameters from observations and projects them into physical space using their allowed ranges M_MS < 8 M_sun, rho_c < 7-8x10^9g/cc. The residuals between fits and individual LC-points are ~ 1-3% for ~ 92% of objects. We find two distinct M_MS groups corresponding to a fast (~ 40-65 Myrs) and a slow(~ 200-500 Myrs) stellar evolution. Most underluminous SNe Ia have hosts with low star formation but high M_MS, suggesting slow evolution times of the progenitor system. 91T-likes SNe show very similar LCs and high M_MS and are correlated to star formation regions, making them potentially important tracers of star formation in the early Universe out to z = 4-11. Some 6% outliers with `non-physical' parameters can be attributed to superluminous SNe Ia and subluminous SNe Ia with hosts of active star formation. For deciphering the SNe Ia diversity and high-precision SNe Ia cosmology, the importance is shown for LCs covering out to ~ 60 days past maximum. Dust associated with various stellar sources in galaxies at all cosmic epochs remains a controversial topic, particularly whether supernovae (SNe) play an important role in dust production. We report evidence of dust formation in the cold, dense shell behind the ejecta-circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction in the Type Ia-CSM SN 2018evt three years after the explosion, characterized by a rise in the mid-infrared (MIR) emission accompanied by an accelerated decline in the optical radiation of the SN. Such a dust-formation picture is also corroborated by the concurrent evolution of the profiles of the Ha emission line. Our model suggests enhanced CSM dust concentration at increasing distances from the SN as compared to what can be expected from the density profile of the mass loss from a steady stellar wind. By the time of the last MIR observations at day +1041, a total amount of 1.2+-0.2x10^{-2} Msun of new dust has been formed by SN 2018evt, making SN 2018evt one of the most prolific dust factories among SNe with evidence of dust formation. We present a JWST mid-infrared spectrum of the under-luminous Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) 2022xkq, obtained with the medium-resolution spectrometer on the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) $\sim130$ days post-explosion. We identify the first MIR lines beyond 14 $\mu$m in SN Ia observations. We find features unique to under-luminous SNe Ia, including: isolated emission of stable Ni, strong blends of [Ti II], and large ratios of singly ionized to doubly ionized species in both [Ar] and [Co]. Comparisons to normal-luminosity SNe Ia spectra at similar phases show a tentative trend between the width of the [Co III] 11.888 $\mu$m feature and the SN light curve shape. Using non-LTE-multi-dimensional radiation hydro simulations and the observed electron capture elements we constrain the mass of the exploding white dwarf. The best-fitting model shows that SN 2022xkq is consistent with an off-center delayed-detonation explosion of a near-Chandrasekhar mass WD (M$_{\rm ej}$ $\approx 1.37$ M$_{\odot}$) of high-central density ($\rho_c \geq 2.0\times10^{9}$ g cm$^{-3}$) seen equator on, which produced M($^{56}$Ni) $= 0.324$ M$_{\odot}$ and M($^{58}$Ni) $\geq 0.06$ M$_{\odot}$. The observed line widths are consistent with the overall abundance distribution; and the narrow stable Ni lines indicate little to no mixing in the central regions, favoring central ignition of sub-sonic carbon burning followed by an off-center DDT beginning at a single point. Additional observations may further constrain the physics revealing the presence of additional species including Cr and Mn. We present multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2022jli, an unprecedented Type Ic supernova discovered in the galaxy NGC 157 at a distance of $\approx$ 23 Mpc. The multi-band light curves reveal many remarkable characteristics. Peaking at a magnitude of $g=15.11\pm0.02$, the high-cadence photometry reveals 12.5$\pm0.2\ $day periodic undulations superimposed on the 200 day supernova decline. This periodicity is observed in the light curves from nine separate filter and instrument configurations with peak-to-peak amplitudes of $\simeq$ 0.1 mag. This is the first time that repeated periodic oscillations, over many cycles, have been detected in a supernova light curve. SN 2022jli also displays an extreme early excess which fades over $\approx$ 25 days followed by a rise to a peak luminosity of $L_{\rm opt} = 10^{42.1}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Although the exact explosion epoch is not constrained by data, the time from explosion to maximum light is $\gtrsim$ 59 days. The luminosity can be explained by a large ejecta mass ($M_{\rm ej}\approx12\pm6$M$_{\odot}$) powered by $^{56}$Ni but we find difficulty in quantitatively modelling the early excess with circumstellar interaction and cooling. Collision between the supernova ejecta and a binary companion is a possible source of this emission. We discuss the origin of the periodic variability in the light curve, including interaction of the SN ejecta with nested shells of circumstellar matter and neutron stars colliding with binary companions., Comment: Accepted in ApJL

We present optical, infrared, ultraviolet, and radio observations of SN 2022xkq, an underluminous fast-declining type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in NGC 1784 ($\mathrm{D}\approx31$ Mpc), from $<1$ to 180 days after explosion. The high-cadence observations of SN 2022xkq, a photometrically transitional and spectroscopically 91bg-like SN Ia, cover the first days and weeks following explosion which are critical to distinguishing between explosion scenarios. The early light curve of SN 2022xkq has a red early color and exhibits a flux excess which is more prominent in redder bands; this is the first time such a feature has been seen in a transitional/91bg-like SN Ia. We also present 92 optical and 19 near-infrared (NIR) spectra, beginning 0.4 days after explosion in the optical and 2.6 days after explosion in the NIR. SN 2022xkq exhibits a long-lived C I 1.0693 $\mu$m feature which persists until 5 days post-maximum. We also detect C II $\lambda$6580 in the pre-maximum optical spectra. These lines are evidence for unburnt carbon that is difficult to reconcile with the double detonation of a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf. No existing explosion model can fully explain the photometric and spectroscopic dataset of SN 2022xkq, but the considerable breadth of the observations is ideal for furthering our understanding of the processes which produce faint SNe Ia., Comment: 38 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, the figure 15 input models and synthetic spectra are now available at https://zenodo.org/record/8379254

We present a comprehensive data set of supernova (SN) 2016adj located within the central dust lane of Centaurus A. SN 2016adj is significantly reddened and after correcting the peak apparent $B$-band magnitude ($m_B = 17.48\pm0.05$) for Milky Way reddening and our inferred host-galaxy reddening parameters (i.e., $R_{V}^{host} = 5.7\pm0.7$ and $A_{V}^{host} = 6.3\pm0.2$), we estimate it reached a peak absolute magnitude of $M_B \sim -18$. Detailed inspection of the optical/NIR spectroscopic time-series reveals a carbon-rich SN Ic and not a SN Ib/IIb as previously suggested in the literature. The NIR spectra shows prevalent carbon-monoxide formation occurring already by +41 days past $B$-band maximum, which is $\approx 11$ days earlier than previously reported in the literature for this object. Interestingly around two months past maximum, the NIR spectrum of SN~2016adj begins to exhibit H features, with a +97~d medium resolution spectrum revealing both Paschen and Bracket lines with absorption minima of $\sim 2000$ km/s, full-width-half-maximum emission velocities of $\sim 1000$ km/s, and emission line ratios consistent with a dense emission region. We speculate these attributes are due to circumstellar interaction (CSI) between the rapidly expanding SN ejecta and a H-rich shell of material formed during the pre-SN phase. A bolometric light curve is constructed and a semi-analytical model fit suggests the supernova synthesized 0.5 solar masses of $^{56}$Ni and ejected 4.2 solar masses of material, though these values should be approached with caution given the large uncertainties associated with the adopted reddening parameters, possible CSI contamination, and known light echo emission. Nebular-phase observations of peculiar Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) provide important constraints on progenitor scenarios and explosion dynamics for both these rare SNe and the more common, cosmologically useful SNe Ia. We present observations from an extensive ground-based and space-based follow-up campaign to characterize SN 2022pul, a "super-Chandrasekhar" mass SN Ia (alternatively "03fg-like" SN), from before peak brightness to well into the nebular phase across optical to mid-infrared (MIR) wavelengths. The early rise of the light curve is atypical, exhibiting two distinct components, consistent with SN Ia ejecta interacting with dense carbon-oxygen rich circumstellar material (CSM). In the optical, SN 2022pul is most similar to SN 2012dn, having a low estimated peak luminosity ($M_{B}=-18.9$ mag) and high photospheric velocity relative to other 03fg-like SNe. In the nebular phase, SN 2022pul adds to the increasing diversity of the 03fg-like subclass. From 168 to 336 days after peak $B$-band brightness, SN 2022pul exhibits asymmetric and narrow emission from [O I] $\lambda\lambda 6300,\ 6364$ (${\rm FWHM} \approx 2{,}000$ km s$^{-1}$), strong, broad emission from [Ca II] $\lambda\lambda 7291,\ 7323$ (${\rm FWHM} \approx 7{,}300$ km s$^{-1}$), and a rapid Fe III to Fe II ionization change. Finally, we present the first-ever optical-to-mid-infrared (MIR) nebular spectrum of an 03fg-like SN Ia using data from JWST. In the MIR, strong lines of neon and argon, weak emission from stable nickel, and strong thermal dust emission (with $T \approx 500$ K), combined with prominent [O I] in the optical, suggest that SN 2022pul was produced by a white dwarf merger within carbon/oxygen-rich CSM., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present an analysis of ground-based and JWST observations of SN~2022pul, a peculiar "03fg-like" (or "super-Chandrasekhar") Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), in the nebular phase at 338d post explosion. Our combined spectrum continuously covers 0.4--14 $\mu$m and includes the first mid-infrared spectrum of an 03fg-like SN Ia. Compared to normal SN Ia 2021aefx, SN 2022pul exhibits a lower mean ionization state, asymmetric emission-line profiles, stronger emission from the intermediate-mass elements (IMEs) argon and calcium, weaker emission from iron-group elements (IGEs), and the first unambiguous detection of neon in a SN Ia. Strong, broad, centrally peaked [Ne II] line at 12.81 $\mu$m was previously predicted as a hallmark of "violent merger'' SN Ia models, where dynamical interaction between two sub-$M_{ch}$ white dwarfs (WDs) causes disruption of the lower mass WD and detonation of the other. The violent merger scenario was already a leading hypothesis for 03fg-like SNe Ia; in SN 2022pul it can explain the large-scale ejecta asymmetries seen between the IMEs and IGEs and the central location of narrow oxygen and broad neon. We modify extant models to add clumping of the ejecta to better reproduce the optical iron emission, and add mass in the innermost region ($< 2000$ km s$^{-1}$) to account for the observed narrow [O I]~$\lambda\lambda6300$, 6364 emission. A violent WD-WD merger explains many of the observations of SN 2022pul, and our results favor this model interpretation for the subclass of 03fg-like SN Ia., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, published in ApJ

We present an analysis of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe~Ia) from both the Carnegie Supernova Project~I (CSP-I) and II (CSP-II), and extend the Hubble diagram from the optical to the near-infrared wavelengths ($uBgVriYJH$). We calculate the Hubble constant, $H_0$, using various distance calibrators: Cepheids, Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB), and Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF). Combining all methods of calibrations, we derive $\rm H_0=71.76 \pm 0.58 \ (stat) \pm 1.19 \ (sys) \ km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}$ from $B$-band, and $\rm H_0=73.22 \pm 0.68 \ (stat) \pm 1.28 \ (sys) \ km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}$ from $H$-band. By assigning equal weight to the Cepheid, TRGB, and SBF calibrators, we derive the systematic errors required for consistency in the first rung of the distance ladder, resulting in a systematic error of $1.2\sim 1.3 \rm \ km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}$ in $H_0$. As a result, relative to the statistics-only uncertainty, the tension between the late-time $H_0$ we derive by combining the various distance calibrators and the early-time $H_0$ from the Cosmic Microwave Background is reduced. The highest precision in SN~Ia luminosity is found in the $Y$ band ($0.12\pm0.01$ mag), as defined by the intrinsic scatter ($\sigma_{int}$). We revisit SN~Ia Hubble residual-host mass correlations and recover previous results that these correlations do not change significantly between the optical and the near-infrared wavelengths. Finally, SNe~Ia that explode beyond 10 kpc from their host centers exhibit smaller dispersion in their luminosity, confirming our earlier findings. Achieving reliable and quantifiable performance in large-area surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates has long been a formidable challenge. It requires substantial signal enhancement while maintaining a reproducible and uniform response. Conventional SERS substrates are typically made of inhomogeneous materials with random resonator geometries and distributions. As a result, they exhibit several or broadened plasmonic resonances, undesired absorptive losses, and inhomogeneous field enhancement. These limitations diminish the signal strength and hamper reproducibility, making it difficult to conduct comparative studies with high sensitivity. In this study, we propose an approach that utilizes monocrystalline gold flakes to fabricate well-defined gratings composed of plasmonic double-wire resonators, which are fabricated through focused ion-beam lithography. The geometry of the double wire grating substrate (DWGS) was evolutionary optimized to achieve efficient enhancement for both excitation and emission processes. The use of monocrystalline material minimizes absorption losses while enhancing the shape fidelity during the nanofabrication process. The DWGS shows notable reproducibility (RSD=6.6%), repeatability (RSD=5.6%), and large-area homogeneity over areas $>10^4\,\mu$m$^2$. Moreover, it provides a SERS enhancement factor of $\approx 10^6$ for 4-Aminothiophenol (4-ATP) analyte and detection capability for sub-monolayer coverage. The DWGS demonstrates reusability, as well as long-term stability on the shelf. The focused ion beam (FIB) is a powerful tool for the fabrication, modification and characterization of materials down to the nanoscale. Starting with the gallium FIB, which was originally intended for photomask repair in the semiconductor industry, there are now many different types of FIB that are commercially available. These instruments use a range of ion species and are applied broadly in materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and even archaeology. The goal of this roadmap is to provide an overview of FIB instrumentation, theory, techniques and applications. By viewing FIB developments through the lens of the various research communities, we aim to identify future pathways for ion source and instrumentation development as well as emerging applications, and the scope for improved understanding of the complex interplay of ion-solid interactions. We intend to provide a guide for all scientists in the field that identifies common research interests and will support future fruitful interactions connecting tool development, experiment and theory. While a comprehensive overview of the field is sought, it is not possible to cover all research related to FIB technologies in detail. The $\mathrm{^{25}Al(p,\gamma)^{26}Si}$ reaction is part of a reaction network with impact on the observed galactic $^{26}$Al abundance. A new determination of the proton strength of the lowest $\ell=0$ proton-resonance in $^{26}$Si is required to more precisely calculate the thermal reaction rate. To this end, the $\mathrm{^{25}Al(d,n)^{26}Si}$ proton-transfer reaction is measured in inverse kinematics using an in-flight radioactive beam at the RESOLUT facility. Excitation energies of the lowest $^{26}$Si proton resonances are measured and cross sections are determined for the lowest $\ell=0$ resonance associated with the $3^{+}_{3}$ state at 5.92(2) MeV. Coupled reaction channels (CRC) calculations using FRESCO are performed to extract the $\ell=0$ spectroscopic factor for the $3^{+}_{3}$ state. The proton width for the $3^{+}_{3}$ state in $^{26}$Si is determined to be $\Gamma_{p}$=2.19(45) eV and the $(p,\gamma)$ resonance strength for the $3^{+}_{3}$ state is extracted as 26(10) meV. This resonance dominates the $\mathrm{^{25}Al(p,\gamma)^{26}Si}$ reaction rate above 0.2 GK., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Phononic crystals (PnCs) are artificially patterned media exhibiting bands of allowed and forbidden zones for phonons. Many emerging applications of PnCs from solid-state simulators to quantum memories could benefit from the on-demand tunability of the phononic band structure. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of suspended graphene PnCs in which the phononic band structure is controlled by mechanical tension applied electrostatically. We show signatures of a mechanically tunable phononic band gap. The experimental data supported by simulation suggest a phononic band gap at 28$-$33 MHz in equilibrium, which upshifts by 9 MHz under a mechanical tension of 3.1 Nm$^{-1}$. This is an essential step towards tunable phononics paving the way for more experiments on phononic systems based on 2D materials.

Accurate distance determination to astrophysical objects is essential for the understanding of their intrinsic brightness and size. The distance to SN 1987A has been previously measured by the expanding photosphere method, and by using the angular size of the circumstellar rings with absolute sizes derived from light curves of narrow UV emission lines, with reported distances ranging from 46.77 kpc to 55 kpc. In this study, we independently determined the distance to SN 1987A using photometry and imaging polarimetry observations of AT 2019xis, a light echo of SN 1987A, by adopting a radiative transfer model of the light echo developed in Ding et al. (2021). We obtained distances to SN 1987A in the range from 49.09 $\pm$ 2.16 kpc to 59.39 $\pm$ 3.27 kpc, depending on the interstellar polarization and extinction corrections, which are consistent with the literature values. This study demonstrates the potential of using light echoes as a tool for distance determination to astrophysical objects in the Milky Way, up to kiloparsec level scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We present five far- and near-ultraviolet spectra of the Type II plateau supernova, SN 2022acko, obtained 5, 6, 7, 19, and 21 days after explosion, all observed with the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The first three epochs are earlier than any Type II plateau supernova has been observed in the far-ultraviolet revealing unprecedented characteristics. These three spectra are dominated by strong lines, primarily from metals, which contrasts with the relatively featureless early optical spectra. The flux decreases over the initial time series as the ejecta cools and line-blanketing takes effect. We model this unique dataset with the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiation transport code CMFGEN, finding a good match to the explosion of a low mass red supergiant with energy Ekin = 6 x 10^50 erg. With these models we identify, for the first time, the ions that dominate the early UV spectra. We also present optical photometry and spectroscopy, showing that SN 2022acko has a peak absolute magnitude of V = -15.4 mag and plateau length of ~115d. The spectra closely resemble those of SN 2005cs and SN 2012A. Using the combined optical and UV spectra, we report the fraction of flux redwards of the uvw2, U, B, and V filters on days 5, 7, and 19. We also create a spectral time-series of Type II supernovae in the ultraviolet, demonstrating the rapid decline of UV flux over the first few weeks of evolution. Future observations of Type II supernovae will continue to explore the diversity seen in the limited set of high-quality UV spectra., Comment: Published in ApJL

We present six epochs of optical spectropolarimetry of the Type IIP supernova (SN) 2021yja ranging from $\sim$ 25 to 95 days after the explosion. An unusually high continuum linear polarization of $p \sim 0.9\%$ is measured during the early photospheric phase, followed by a steady decrease well before the onset of the nebular phase. This behavior has not been observed before in Type IIP supernovae (SNe IIP). The observed continuum polarization angle does not change significantly during the photospheric phase. We find a pronounced axis of symmetry in the global ejecta that is shared in common with the H$\alpha$ and Ca II near-infrared triplet lines. These observations are consistent with an ellipsoidal geometry. The temporal evolution of the continuum polarization is also compatible with the SN ejecta interacting with aspherical circumstellar matter, although no spectroscopic features that may be associated with strong interaction can be identified. Alternatively, we consider the source of the high polarization to be an extended hydrogen envelope that is indistinguishable from low-density circumstellar matter., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are important cosmological probes and contributors to galactic nucleosynthesis, particularly of the iron group elements. To improve both their reliability as cosmological probes and to understand galactic chemical evolution, it is vital to understand the binary progenitor system and explosion mechanism. The classification of SNe Ia into Branch groups has led to some understanding of the similarities and differences among the varieties of observed SNe Ia. However, partly due to small sample size, little work has been done on the broad-line or 02bo group. We perform direct spectral analysis on the pre-maximum spectra of the broad-line SN 2019ein and compare and contrast it to the core-normal SN~2011fe. Both SN 2019ein and SN 2011fe were first observed spectroscopically within two days of discovery, allowing us to follow the spectroscopic evolution of both supernovae in detail. We find that the optical depths of the primary features of both the CN and BL supernovae are very similar, except that there is a velocity shift between them. We further examine the SN 2002bo-like subclass and show that for nine objects with pre-maximum spectra in the range -6 -- -2 days with respect to B-maximum all the emission peaks of the Si II {\lambda}6355 line of BL are blueshifted pre-maximum, making this a simple classification criterion., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The astronomical transient AT2018cow is the closest example of the new class of luminous, fast blue optical transients (FBOTs). Liverpool Telescope RINGO3 observations of AT2018cow are reported here, which constitute the earliest polarimetric observations of an FBOT. At 5.7 days post-explosion, the optical emission of AT2018cow exhibited a chromatic polarization spike that reached ~7% at red wavelengths. This is the highest intrinsic polarization recorded for a non-relativistic explosive transient, and is observed in multiple bands and at multiple epochs over the first night of observations, before rapidly declining. The apparent wavelength dependence of the polarization may arise through depolarization or dilution of the polarized flux, due to conditions in AT~2018cow at early times. A second ``bump" in the polarization is observed at blue wavelengths at ~12 days. Such a high polarization requires an extremely aspherical geometry that is only apparent for a brief period (<1 day), such as shock breakout through an optically thick disk. An analysis leveraging 170 optical spectra of 35 stripped-envelope (SE) core-collapse supernovae observed by the Carnegie Supernova Project-I and published in a companion paper is presented. Mean template spectra are constructed for the SNe IIb, Ib and Ic sub-types and parent ions associated with designated spectral features are identified with the aid of the spectral synthesis code SYNAPPS. Our modeled mean spectra suggest the ~6150~\AA\ feature in SNe~IIb may have an underlying contribution due to silicon, while the same feature in some SNe Ib may have an underlying contribution due to hydrogen. Standard spectral line diagnostics consisting of pseudo-equivalent widths (pEW) and blue-shifted Doppler velocity are measured for each of the spectral features. Correlation matrices and rolling mean values of both spectral diagnostics are constructed. A Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is applied to various wavelength ranges of the entire data set and suggests clear separation among the different SE SN sub-types, which follows from trends previously identified in the literature. In addition, our finds reveal the presence of two SNe IIb sub-types, a handful of SNe Ib displaying signatures of weak, high-velocity hydrogen, and a single SN~Ic with evidence of weak helium features. Our PCA results can be leveraged to obtain robust sub-typing of SE SN based on a single spectrum taken during the so-called photospheric phase, separating SNe IIb from SNe Ib with ~80 percent completion., Comment: Version submitted to the publishers

We present new 0.3-21 micron photometry of SN 2021aefx in the spiral galaxy NGC 1566 at +357 days after B-band maximum, including the first detection of any SN Ia at >15 micron. These observations follow earlier JWST observations of SN 2021aefx at +255 days after the time of maximum brightness, allowing us to probe the temporal evolution of the emission properties. We measure the fraction of flux emerging at different wavelengths and its temporal evolution. Additionally, the integrated 0.3-14 micron decay rate of $\Delta m_{0.3-14} = 1.35 \pm 0.05$ mag/100 days is higher than the decline rate from the radioactive decay of $^{56}$Co of $\sim 1.2$mag/100 days. The most plausible explanation for this discrepancy is that flux is shifting to >14 micron, and future JWST observations of SNe Ia will be able to directly test this hypothesis. Optical spectropolarimetry of the normal thermonuclear supernova SN2019np from -14.5 to +14.5 days relative to B-band maximum detected an intrinsic continuum polarization, p(cont), of 0.21+-0.09% at the first epoch. Between days -11.5 to +05, p(cont) remained about 0 and by day +14.5 was again significant at 0.19+-0.10%. Not considering the first epoch, the dominant axis of SiII(6355A) was roughly constant, staying close to the continuum until both rotated in opposite directions on day +14.5. Detailed radiation-hydrodynamical simulations produce a very steep density slope in the outermost ejecta so that the low first-epoch p(const) of about 0.2% nevertheless suggests a separate structure with an axis ratio of about 2 in the outer carbon-rich 3...5E-3 Mo. Large-amplitude fluctuations in the polarization profiles and a flocculent appearance of the polar diagram for the CaII near-infrared triplet (NIR3) may be related by a common origin. The temporal evolution of the polarization spectra agrees with an off-center delayed detonation. The late-time increase in polarization and the possible change in position angle are also consistent with an aspherical 56Ni core. The p(cont) and the absorptions due to Si II(6355A) and the CaII NIR3 form in the same region of the extended photosphere, with an interplay between line occultation and thermalization producing p. Small-scale polarization features may be due to small-scale structures, but many could be related to atomic patterns of the quasi-continuum; the hardly have an equivalent in the total-flux spectrum. We present a JWST/MIRI low-resolution mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic observation of the normal Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2021aefx at +323 days past rest-frame B-band maximum light. The spectrum ranges from 4-14 um, and shows many unique qualities including a flat-topped [Ar III] 8.991 um profile, a strongly tilted [Co III] 11.888 um feature, and multiple stable Ni lines. These features provide critical information about the physics of the explosion. The observations are compared to synthetic spectra from detailed NLTE multi-dimensional models. The results of the best-fitting model are used to identify the components of the spectral blends and provide a quantitative comparison to the explosion physics. Emission line profiles and the presence of electron capture (EC) elements are used to constrain the mass of the exploding white dwarf (WD) and the chemical asymmetries in the ejecta. We show that the observations of SN 2021aefx are consistent with an off-center delayed-detonation explosion of a near-Chandrasekhar mass (Mch) WD at a viewing angle of -30 degrees relative to the point of the deflagration-to-detonation transition. From the strength of the stable Ni lines we determine that there is little to no mixing in the central regions of the ejecta. Based on both the presence of stable Ni and the Ar velocity distributions, we obtain a strict lower limit of 1.2 Msun of the initial WD, implying that most sub-Mch explosions models are not viable models for SN 2021aefx. We present ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR) observations and analysis of the nearby Type Ia supernova SN 2021fxy. Our observations include UV photometry from Swift/UVOT, UV spectroscopy from HST/STIS, and high-cadence optical photometry with the Swope 1-m telescope capturing intra-night rises during the early light curve. Early $B-V$ colours show SN 2021fxy is the first "shallow-silicon" (SS) SN Ia to follow a red-to-blue evolution, compared to other SS objects which show blue colours from the earliest observations. Comparisons to other spectroscopically normal SNe Ia with HST UV spectra reveal SN 2021fxy is one of several SNe Ia with flux suppression in the mid-UV. These SNe also show blue-shifted mid-UV spectral features and strong high-velocity Ca II features. One possible origin of this mid-UV suppression is the increased effective opacity in the UV due to increased line blanketing from high velocity material, but differences in the explosion mechanism cannot be ruled out. Among SNe Ia with mid-UV suppression, SNe 2021fxy and 2017erp show substantial similarities in their optical properties despite belonging to different Branch subgroups, and UV flux differences of the same order as those found between SNe 2011fe and 2011by. Differential comparisons to multiple sets of synthetic SN Ia UV spectra reveal this UV flux difference likely originates from a luminosity difference between SNe 2021fxy and 2017erp, and not differing progenitor metallicities as suggested for SNe 2011by and 2011fe. We present the largest and most homogeneous collection of near-infrared (NIR) spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): 339 spectra of 98 individual SNe obtained as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project-II. These spectra, obtained with the FIRE spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan Baade telescope, have a spectral range of 0.8--2.5 $\mu$m. Using this sample, we explore the NIR spectral diversity of SNe Ia and construct a template of spectral time series as a function of the light-curve-shape parameter, color stretch $s_{BV}$. Principal component analysis is applied to characterize the diversity of the spectral features and reduce data dimensionality to a smaller subspace. Gaussian process regression is then used to model the subspace dependence on phase and light-curve shape and the associated uncertainty. Our template is able to predict spectral variations that are correlated with $s_{BV}$, such as the hallmark NIR features: Mg II at early times and the $H$-band break after peak. Using this template reduces the systematic uncertainties in K-corrections by ~90% compared to those from the Hsiao template. These uncertainties, defined as the mean K-correction differences computed with the color-matched template and observed spectra, are on the level of $4\times10^{-4}$ mag on average. This template can serve as the baseline spectral energy distribution for light-curve fitters and can identify peculiar spectral features that might point to compelling physics. A rare class of supernovae (SNe) is characterized by strong interaction between the ejecta and several solar masses of circumstellar matter (CSM) as evidenced by strong Balmer-line emission. Within the first few weeks after the explosion, they may display spectral features similar to overluminous Type Ia SNe, while at later phase their observation properties exhibit remarkable similarities with some extreme case of Type IIn SNe that show strong Balmer lines years after the explosion. We present polarimetric observations of SN2018evt obtained by the ESO Very Large Telescope from 172 to 219 days after the estimated time of peak luminosity to study the geometry of the CSM. The nonzero continuum polarization decreases over time, suggesting that the mass loss of the progenitor star is aspherical. The prominent H$\alpha$ emission can be decomposed into a broad, time-evolving component and an intermediate-width, static component. The former shows polarized signals, and it is likely to arise from a cold dense shell (CDS) within the region between the forward and reverse shocks. The latter is significantly unpolarized, and it is likely to arise from shocked, fragmented gas clouds in the H-rich CSM. We infer that SN2018evt exploded inside a massive and aspherical circumstellar cloud. The symmetry axes of the CSM and the SN appear to be similar. SN\,2018evt shows observational properties common to events that display strong interaction between the ejecta and CSM, implying that they share similar circumstellar configurations. Our preliminary estimate also suggests that the circumstellar environment of SN2018evt has been significantly enriched at a rate of $\sim0.1$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ over a period of $>100$ yr., Comment: 29 pages, 20 figures, 10 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present near-infrared (NIR) and optical observations of the Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) SN 2021krf obtained between days 13 and 259 at several ground-based telescopes. The NIR spectrum at day 68 exhibits a rising $K$-band continuum flux density longward of $\sim$ 2.0 $\mu$m, and a late-time optical spectrum at day 259 shows strong [O I] 6300 and 6364 \r{A} emission-line asymmetry, both indicating the presence of dust, likely formed in the SN ejecta. We estimate a carbon-grain dust mass of $\sim$ 2 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$ and a dust temperature of $\sim$ 900 - 1200 K associated with this rising continuum and suggest the dust has formed in SN ejecta. Utilizing the one-dimensional multigroup radiation hydrodynamics code STELLA, we present two degenerate progenitor solutions for SN 2021krf, characterized by C-O star masses of 3.93 and 5.74 M$_{\odot}$, but with the same best-fit $^{56}$Ni mass of 0.11 M$_{\odot}$ for early times (0-70 days). At late times (70-300 days), optical light curves of SN 2021krf decline substantially more slowly than that expected from $^{56}$Co radioactive decay. Lack of H and He lines in the late-time SN spectrum suggests the absence of significant interaction of the ejecta with the circumstellar medium. We present JWST near- and mid-infrared spectroscopic observations of the nearby normal Type Ia supernova SN 2021aefx in the nebular phase at $+255$ days past maximum light. Our Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and Mid Infrared Instrument (MIRI) observations, combined with ground-based optical data from the South African Large Telescope (SALT), constitute the first complete optical $+$ NIR $+$ MIR nebular SN Ia spectrum covering 0.3$-$14 $\mu$m. This spectrum unveils the previously unobserved 2.5$-$5 $\mu$m region, revealing strong nebular iron and stable nickel emission, indicative of high-density burning that can constrain the progenitor mass. The data show a significant improvement in sensitivity and resolution compared to previous Spitzer MIR data. We identify numerous NIR and MIR nebular emission lines from iron-group elements and as well as lines from the intermediate-mass element argon. The argon lines extend to higher velocities than the iron-group elements, suggesting stratified ejecta that are a hallmark of delayed-detonation or double-detonation SN Ia models. We present fits to simple geometric line profiles to features beyond 1.2 $\mu$m and find that most lines are consistent with Gaussian or spherical emission distributions, while the [Ar III] 8.99 $\mu$m line has a distinctively flat-topped profile indicating a thick spherical shell of emission. Using our line profile fits, we investigate the emissivity structure of SN 2021aefx and measure kinematic properties. Continued observations of SN 2021aefx and other SNe Ia with JWST will be transformative to the study of SN Ia composition, ionization structure, density, and temperature, and will provide important constraints on SN Ia progenitor and explosion models., Comment: published in ApJ Letters, 17 pages, 12 figures

We apply the color-magnitude intercept calibration method (CMAGIC) to the Nearby Supernova Factory SNe Ia spectrophotometric dataset. The currently existing CMAGIC parameters are the slope and intercept of a straight line fit to the first linear region in the color-magnitude diagram, which occurs over a span of approximately 30 days after maximum brightness. We define a new parameter, $\omega_{XY}$, the size of the ``bump'' feature near maximum brightness for arbitrary filters $X$ and $Y$. We find a significant correlation between the slope of the first linear region, $\beta_{XY, 1}$, in the CMAGIC diagram and $\omega_{XY}$. These results may be used to our advantage, as they are less affected by extinction than parameters defined as a function of time. Additionally, $\omega_{XY}$ is computed independently of templates. We find that current empirical templates are successful at reproducing the features described in this work, particularly SALT3, which correctly exhibits the negative correlation between slope and bump size seen in our data. In 1-D simulations, we show that the correlation between the size of the bump feature and $\beta_{XY, 1}$ can be understood as a result of chemical mixing due to large-scale Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We present multi-wavelength time-series spectroscopy of SN 2013aa and SN 2017cbv, two Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) on the outskirts of the same host galaxy, NGC 5643. This work utilizes new nebular-phase near-infrared (NIR) spectra obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project-II, in addition to previously published optical and NIR spectra. By measuring nebular-phase [Fe II] lines in both the optical and NIR, we examine the explosion kinematics and test the efficacy of several emission line fitting techniques commonly used in the literature. The NIR [Fe II] 1.644 $\mu$m line provides the most robust velocity measurements against variations due to the choice of the fit method and line blending. The resulting effects on velocity measurements due to choosing different fit methods, initial fit parameters, continuum and line profile functions, and fit region boundaries were also investigated. The NIR [Fe II] velocities yield the same radial shift direction as velocities measured using the optical [Fe II] 7155 A line, but the sizes of the shifts are consistently and substantially lower, pointing to a potential issue in optical studies. The NIR [Fe II] 1.644 $\mu$m emission profile shows a lack of significant asymmetry in both SNe Ia, and the observed low velocities elevate the importance for correcting for any radial velocity contribution from the host galaxy's rotation. The low [Fe II] velocities measured in the NIR at nebular phases disfavors most progenitor scenarios in close double-degenerate systems for both SN 2013aa and SN 2017cbv. The time evolution of the NIR [Fe II] 1.644 $\mu$m line also indicates moderately high progenitor white dwarf central density and potentially high magnetic fields. 1991T-like supernovae are the luminous, slow-declining extreme of the Branch shallow-silicon (SS) subclass of Type Ia supernovae. They are distinguished by extremely weak Ca II H & K and Si II $\lambda6355$ and strong Fe III absorption features in their optical spectra at pre-maximum phases, and have long been suspected to be over-luminous compared to normal Type Ia supernovae. In this paper, the pseudo equivalent width of the Si II $\lambda$6355 absorption obtained at light curve phases from $\leq+10$ days is combined with the morphology of the $i$-band light curve to identify a sample of 1991T-like supernovae in the Carnegie Supernova Project-II. Hubble diagram residuals show that, at optical as well as near-infrared wavelengths, these events are over-luminous by $\sim$0.1-0.5 mag with respect to the less extreme Branch SS (1999aa-like) and Branch core-normal supernovae with similar $B$-band light curve decline rates., Comment: Submitted to ApJ (Aug 30, 2022)

We report spectropolarimetric observations of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021rhu at four epochs: $-$7, +0, +36, and +79 days relative to its $B$-band maximum luminosity. A wavelength-dependent continuum polarization peaking at $3890 \pm 93$ Angstroms and reaching a level of $p_{\rm max}=1.78% \pm 0.02$% was found. The peak of the polarization curve is bluer than is typical in the Milky Way, indicating a larger proportion of small dust grains along the sightline to the SN. After removing the interstellar polarization, we found a pronounced increase of the polarization in the CaII near-infrared triplet, from $\sim$0.3% at day $-$7 to $\sim$2.5% at day +79. No temporal evolution in high-resolution flux spectra across the NaID and CaIIH&K features was seen from days +39 to +74, indicating that the late-time increase in polarization is intrinsic to the SN as opposed to being caused by scattering of SN photons in circumstellar or interstellar matter. We suggest that an explanation for the late-time rise of the CaII near-infrared triplet polarization may be the alignment of calcium atoms in a weak magnetic field through optical excitation/pumping by anisotropic radiation from the SN., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The early phases of the observed evolution of the supernovae (SNe) are expected to be dominated by the shock breakout and ``flash" ionization of the surrounding circumstellar medium. This material arises from the last stages of the evolution of the progenitor, such that photometry and spectroscopy of SNe at early times can place vital constraints on the latest and fastest evolutionary phases leading up to stellar death. These signatures are erased by the expansion of the ejecta within ~5 days after explosion. Here we present the earliest constraints, to date, on the polarization of ten transients discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), between June 2018 and August 2019. Rapid polarimetric followup was conducted using the Liverpool Telescope RINGO3 instrument, including 3 SNe observed within <1 day of detection by the ZTF. The limits on the polarization within the first 5 days of explosion, for all SN types, is generally <2%, implying early asymmetries are limited to axial ratios >0.65 (assuming an oblate spheroidal configuration).
