3. Unveiling the Significance of Graphene Nanoplatelet (GNP) Localization in Tuning the Performance of PP/HDPE Blends.

Abstract

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) blends are widely used in industries requiring mechanically durable materials, yet the impact of processing parameters on blend performance remains underexplored. This study investigates the influence of blending sequence and screw speed on the properties of blends of HDPE and PP filled with 1.25 wt.% graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). Changes in crystallization behaviour, tensile strength, and viscoelastic responses with blending sequence are studied. The addition of GNP increases the crystallization temperature (Tc) of PP in the PE/PP blend by 4 °C when GNP is pre-mixed with PE to form (PE+GNP)/PP blends. In contrast, when GNP is pre-mixed with PP to create (PP+GNP)/PE blends, the Tc of PP rises by approximately 11 °C, from 124 °C for the neat PE/PP blend to 135 °C. On the other hand, the Tc of PE remains unchanged regardless of the blending sequence. XRD patterns reveal the impact of blending regime on crystallinity, with GNP alignment affecting peak intensities confirming the more efficient interaction of GNPs with PP when premixed before blending with PE, (PP+GNP)/PE. Tensile moduli are less sensitive to the changes in processing, e.g., screw speed and blending sequence. In contrast, elongation at break and tensile toughness show distinct variations. The elongation at the break of the (PP+GNP)/PE blend decreases by 30% on increasing screw speed from 50 to 200 rpm. Moreover, the elongation at the break of (PE+GNP)/PP prepared at 100 rpm is ~40% higher than that of the (PP+GNP)/PE. (PE+GNP)/PP displays a 'quasi-co-continuous' morphology linked to its higher elastic modulus G′ compared to that of the (PP+GNP)/PE blend. Abstract

We report new nanocomposites with poly(benzoxazine-co-epoxy) matrix reinforced with 1 wt% graphene. Curabox 24-111, a benzoxazine resin was copolymerised with Epilok 60-566, a mixture of epoxy resins. Copolymerisation was also carried out in the presence of different graphene powders, namely, Nanene-001 and Nanene-002, used as single fillers and as mixture (relative weight ratio 70:30 or 30:70). DSC results showed the addition of either single filler caused a delay in polymerisation and an increase in the exothermic peak temperature of the curing reaction with a related reduction in ΔH Total. compared to the neat copolymer. Copolymerisation showed a 38% reduction and 24% increase in tensile modulus (E) compared to the neat polybenzoxazine and epoxy polymer, with a respective 18% and 30% reduction in tensile strength (TS). Nanocomposites with 0.7wt% Nanene-002 + 0.3 wt% Nanene-001 showed the highest increase of 35% in TS, a 1.6% reduction in E and 36% increase in elongation at break (EB) compared to the neat copolymer matrix. Samples with 1 wt% Nanene-001 showed the largest reduction of 21% in E, a 27% increase in TS and a 45% increase in EB. Additionally, TGA thermographs showed a 22°C increase in the onset of degradation (300°C–322°C) improving the materials thermal stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The remarkable properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and potential applications are hindered by current solution-phase processing strategies. The initial dissolution of SWNTs remains a fundamental challenge, reliant on aggressive chemistry or ultrasonication and lengthy ultracentrifugation. In this thesis, a simple non-aqueous electrochemical reduction process that leads to spontaneous dissolution of individualised SWNTs from raw, unprocessed powders is outlined. The intrinsic electrochemical stability and conductivity of these nanoparticles allows their electrochemical dissolution from a pure SWNT cathode to form solutions of well-defined nanoparticle anions with characteristic charge density. Other than a reversible change in redox/solvation state, there is no obvious chemical functionalisation of the structure, suggesting an analogy to conventional atomic electrochemical dissolution. The heterogeneity of as-synthesised SWNT samples leads to the sequential dissolution of distinct fractions over time. Initial preferential dissolution of defective nanotubes and carbonaceous debris provides a simple, non-destructive means to purify raw materials without recourse to the usual, damaging, competitive oxidation reactions. During early stage developments, the process showed remarkable affinity for dissolving metallic SWNTs, providing a potentially scalable route for separation by electronic character, vital for many applications. However, selectivity was lost with significantly increased process yields (complete dissolution) following several optimisations. Subsequently, the electrochemical deposition of SWNTs is proposed as a new route to selectively plate specific SWNT species and avoid unwanted functionalisations that occur when exposing reduced SWNTs to different atmospheres. Finally, the extension of electrochemical processing to related materials including activated and graphitic nanocarbons, metallic and metal chalcogenide nanomaterials was also investigated, with great promise for the development of new applications.

Abstract

Achieving good dispersion of graphene (GNP), in polyetheretherketone (PEEK), is challenging due to the high melt viscosity, solvent resistance and processing temperature of PEEK. In addition, certain manufacturing processes tend to enhance the anisotropy due to GNP orientation within the structure. This study investigated the fabrication of nanocomposite parts through hot compression moulding (C-MOULD) and powder bed fusion (PBF) processes, using powder with GNPs fused to the surface of polymeric particles, through a process called mechanofusion. The method applies mechanical forces of compression, shear and impact to generate a mechanical bond between materials, in this case, O2 functionalised GNP and a developmental polyaryletherketones (PAEK) grade powder. The novelty of this work is in the combination of processes used for manufacturing (material preparation and actual manufacturing processes), which are scalable and efficient in comparison with existing methods (such as solvent mixing or melt-compounding). The mechanofusion GNP-PAEK composite powders were successfully printed for the first time using the EOS P800 system with notable improvements in electrical and mechanical properties. This study highlights that the mechanofusion process could be used as an efficient process for making multifunctional nanocomposite materials and this can be combined with additive manufacturing (AM) processes to produce complex components. Abstract

We present an overview of the main techniques for production and processing of graphene and related materials (GRMs), as well as the key characterization procedures. We adopt a 'hands-on' approach, providing practical details and procedures as derived from literature as well as from the authors' experience, in order to enable the reader to reproduce the results. Section I is devoted to 'bottom up' approaches, whereby individual constituents are pieced together into more complex structures. We consider graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) produced either by solution processing or by on-surface synthesis in ultra high vacuum (UHV), as well carbon nanomembranes (CNM). Production of a variety of GNRs with tailored band gaps and edge shapes is now possible. CNMs can be tuned in terms of porosity, crystallinity and electronic behaviour. Section II covers 'top down' techniques. These rely on breaking down of a layered precursor, in the graphene case usually natural crystals like graphite or artificially synthesized materials, such as highly oriented pyrolythic graphite, monolayers or few layers (FL) flakes. The main focus of this section is on various exfoliation techniques in a liquid media, either intercalation or liquid phase exfoliation (LPE). The choice of precursor, exfoliation method, medium as well as the control of parameters such as time or temperature are crucial. A definite choice of parameters and conditions yields a particular material with specific properties that makes it more suitable for a targeted application. We cover protocols for the graphitic precursors to graphene oxide (GO). This is an important material for a range of applications in biomedicine, energy storage, nanocomposites, etc. Hummers' and modified Hummers' methods are used to make GO that subsequently can be reduced to obtain reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with a variety of strategies. Abstract

This Research Article discusses the growth of polycrystalline, self-supporting ZnO nanofibers, which can detect nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas down to 1 part per billion (ppb), one of the smallest detection limits reported for NO2 using ZnO. A new and innovative method has been developed for growing polycrystalline ZnO nanofibers. These nanofibers have been created using core-shell electrospinning of inorganic metal precursor zinc neodecanoate, where growth occurs at the core of the nanofibers. This process produces contamination-free, self-supporting, polycrystalline ZnO nanofibers of an average diameter and grain size 50 and 8 nm, respectively, which are ideal for gas sensing applications. This process opens up an exciting opportunity for creating nanofibers from a variety of metal oxides, facilitating many new applications especially in the areas of sensors and wearable technologies.

Abstract

We report the exfoliation of graphite in aqueous solutions under high shear rate [∼ 10$^{8}$ s$^{-1}$] turbulent flow conditions, with a 100% exfoliation yield. The material is stabilized without centrifugation at concentrations up to 100 g/L using carboxymethylcellulose sodium salt to formulate conductive printable inks. The sheet resistance of blade coated films is below ∼2Ω/□. Abstract

Self-esteem of 350 seventh-grade students from open and traditional elementary schools was measured. The seven open and eight traditional classes represented significantly different treatment groups. No group differences in self-esteem were found, nor were effects found for socioeconomic status, IQ, or sibling position. Girls had higher self-esteem than boys. (Author/RD)

Abstract

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission has become a crucial problem, especially in developing countries since it is one of the main reasons for the formation of acid precipitation and the secondary formation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Wet magnesia desulfurization stands out as a widely used practical approach for the control of SO2 due to its high removal efficiency, low operating cost and potential valuable by-products. However, the effluent of magnesium sulfite (main by-product) can reemit SO2 and cause water pollution. Thus, it is important, but challenging, to enhance the oxidation rate to improve the utilization of MgSO4 for sustainable resources and meanwhile downsize the absorbing tower. Herein, we report a series of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-assembled transition metal catalysts (M–C3N4) for the first time via a facile and environmentally friendly synthetic route as a new generation of catalysts for the oxidation of magnesium sulfite. We have performed both theoretical evaluation and deep experimental validation of the series of M–C3N4 materials, and in particular, the cobalt–C3N4 material since it possesses the best catalytic activity reported to date, which is comparable to that of aqueous precious metal benchmarks but only with a 2.4 wt% cobalt loading. Additionally, the ability to recycle the Co–C3N4 complex is investigated to facilitate its practical application. This fabrication method is expected to provide a new concept for the construction of multifunctional nanocomposites for a large variety of industrially relevant desulfurization applications.
