A four-part narration of a white, working-class woman in New England who married a West Indian man of color in 1869 is presented. The first part narrates the story of the death of the woman's first husband, the second recounts what little the archives reveal of the years between the American Civil War and the woman's remarriage, the third part is a twist for the initial meeting between the white widow and the man of color and the last recounts the visit paid to the woman in Vermont.
