Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a set of methods, processes and tools that provide continuity and use of building information throughout its lifecycle. It improves the way buildings are designed, built and managed. BIM diffusion is encouraged in France and throughout the world because it holds great potential both for the Architecture Engineering Construction and Operation (AECO) sector and for the State as an asset manager.However, its diffusion requires the development of an extensive regulatory, technical and social framework. Its diffusion is slow and raises a broad range of reactions from practitioners, especially architects. As a central member of the project management team and intervening at the beginning of a building lifecycle, architects are a key player of BIM diffusion among the AECO sector. Although BIM is a collaborative innovation, the adoption of BIM practices impacts each firm individually. This impact is very little known and studied, both at the organizational level and at the sector level.In this research work, we propose several models for understanding the diffusion and adoption of BIM in organizations, as well as the factors that influence it. These models have allowed us to survey architectural firms using mixed methods in order to map the state of the architectural sector, the progress of BIM adoption within firms, and the strategies that they develop to implement BIM practices. The survey highlighted some contradictions between the professional culture of architects and characteristics of the BIM technology. The interest of many design firms in BIM practices despite these contradictions could be a sign of a cultural change.Our immersion in four architecture firms within the scope of action research has allowed us to study the mechanisms that take place during the implementation of BIM tools and practices. Implementation is often a radical change for a design firm and is difficult to carry out. We exploited all the observations made during the survey and research action to provide recommendations and a roadmap for design firms wishing to implement BIM practices.; Le Building Information Modeling (BIM) est une technologie innovante qui regroupe un ensemble de méthodes, procédés et outils de travail permettant d’alimenter et d’exploiter une base de données contenant des informations d’un ouvrage tout au long de son cycle de vie. Il permet d'améliorer la performance des ouvrages et la manière dont on les conçoit, construit et gère. Sa diffusion est encouragée en France et à travers le monde, car il porte un fort potentiel à la fois pour le secteur de la construction dans son ensemble et pour le gestionnaire de patrimoine qu’est l’État.Le BIM nécessite cependant la mise en place d’un cadre technique, règlementaire et humain conséquent. Sa diffusion est lente et il suscite des réactions assez contrastées chez les professionnels, en particulier les architectes. Ces derniers, par la place importante qu’ils tiennent dans l’équipe de maîtrise d’oeuvre, constituent un acteur incontournable de la transition de l’ensemble du secteur vers des pratiques BIM. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’une innovation collaborative, l’adoption de pratiques BIM impacte chacune des entreprises qui le mettent en place à titre individuel. Cet impact est très peu connu et étudié pour l’instant, tant au niveau organisationnel qu’à l’échelle du secteur.Dans ce travail de recherche, nous proposons des modèles permettant d’appréhender la diffusion et l’adoption du BIM au sein des organisations. Nous avons également référencé les facteurs qui impactent la décision d’adopter des pratiques BIM dans les organisations ainsi que ceux qui impactent le succès ou l’échec de sa mise en oeuvre. Ces modèles nous ont permis de réaliser une enquête auprès des agences pour cartographier l’état du secteur de l’architecture, de la diffusion du BIM chez les architectes, et la manière dont ils l’implémentent. L’enquête a mis en évidence certaines contradictions entre la culture professionnelle des architectes et la nature du BIM. Le fait que les agences aient commencé à déployer des pratiques BIM malgré ces nombreuses contradictions peut être le marqueur d’un changement culturel important pour la profession d’architecte.Notre immersion au sein de plusieurs agences nous a permis d’étudier les mécanismes à l’oeuvre au cours de l’implémentation d’outils et de pratiques BIM. Cette phase de changement souvent radical pour une agence est difficile à mener. Nous nous sommes donc appuyés sur l’ensemble de nos résultats pour proposer des recommandations et une feuille de route à destination des agences qui souhaitent implémenter des pratiques BIM.

National audience; Building Information Model / Modeling / Management (BIM) captures many expectations and fears in the architectural field. It is sometimes associated with the death of the "artisanal operation" of architecture firms, or the decline of the architect's missions in architectural projects. BIM, however, is also seen as an opportunity to consolidate the architect's role within project management teams. Will BIM transform the architectural sector, the organization of architecture firms and the definition of the architectural profession? The authors propose to address these questions using two main approaches. The first is historical and consists of studying the past trajectories of the architectural profession, and the second concerns computer-aided design tools. This latter approach is quantitative: the authors report on a questionnaire survey that allowed them to identify trends in the appropriation of BIM by architects. The combination of these two approaches makes it possible to sketch a prospective analysis of interactions between BIM diffusion and the future of the architectural profession and architecture firms.; Le Building Information Model/Modeling/Management (BIM) cristallise aujourd’hui de nombreuses attentes et craintes dans le secteur de l’architecture. Certains associent au BIM la fin du « fonctionnement artisanal » des agences, voire la fin des missions des architectes. D’autres y voient une opportunité de consolider le rôle de l’architecte dans le projet. Mais qu’en est-il ? Comment les agences d’architecture se positionnent-elles par rapport au BIM ? Va-t-il transformer le secteur de l’architecture, l’organisation du travail et la définition de la profession d’architecte ? Les auteurs proposent d’aborder ces questions de manière dépassionnée sous deux angles principaux. Le premier est un angle historique et consiste à étudier les trajectoires passées de la profession d’architecte d’une part, et celle des outils de dessin ou conception assistée par ordinateur d’autre part. Le second est un angle quantitatif : les auteurs restituent une enquête par questionnaire qui a permis de dégager des tendances sur l’appropriation du BIM par les architectes. La combinaison de ces deux approches permet d’esquisser une analyse prospective sur l’impact de sa diffusion sur la profession et sur les agences d’architecture.

International audience; The newest information and communication technologies bring a major shift to the AEC sector and foster it towards the new digital globalized economy. The last decades witnessed many changes in the AEC industry brought in by digital tools and by the adoption of Building Information Modeling/Management (BIM). The changes had influenced the common practices of design, construction and management, they have also fostered new digital practices into AEC. Innovative digital project management becomes a base element of an effective BIM project management. The project teams’ collective competencies and skills contribute to design development and value engineering of the project. In this context, four approaches: BIM adoption, agile BIM, 4D digital decision-making, qualitative requirements to BIM, which are resulting from the research are presented in this article whose objective is to assist and facilitate the integration of digital in AEC specific professional practices.

Adoption of BIM has increased significantly over the last few years and BIM adoption is an active research area that aims to construct a better understanding of the spread of BIM and factors that may explain the speed of BIM adoption and its diffusion. Unfortunately, in this literature, the factors that influence the adoption process are unclear: those who influence the decision to adopt (Decision Factors or DFs) are confused with those that influence the success of the implementation (Implementation Factors or IFs). IFs are very rarely studied, although they could make it possible to produce recommendations to help firms to implement BIM. This paper aims to identify the elements that can influence the BIM adoption process. The main findings of this paper is a classification model of innovation adoption influencing factors, a critical view of methods used to study BIM adoption factors, and an overview of factors that can influence the adoption of BIM, including DFs and IFs.

In this paper, we describe how we used interviews, case studies and action research to collect information on how implementation of BIM is made in architecture firms. Hypotheses on what facilitates BIM implementation in these firms are drawn.

National audience; Le Building Information Modeling (BIM) est un ensemble de technologies et processus de travail innovants qui permettent d’optimiser le cycle de vie d’un ouvrage (conception, construction, gestion et maintenance) à partir d’une maquette numérique. La diffusion du BIM est lente dans le secteur de la construction, mais les initiatives internationales, européennes et nationales se multiplient pour en accélérer l’adoption.Pourtant le secteur (et en particulier les agences d’architecture) est composé essentiellement de très petites entreprises, pour qui l’implémentation semble très difficile.Notre travail de recherche consiste à (a) étudier l’adoption du BIM au sein des agences d’architecture en France, et d’en faciliter l’intégration en développant une méthode d’aide à l’implémentation.

National audience; Aujourd’hui, presque toutes les agences d’architecture réalisent des représentations graphiques de leurs projets sur ordinateur. Il s’agit essentiellement de dessins 2D et de 3D purement représentative. Malgré ce recours généralisé aux outils numériques, le terme transition numérique est utilisé pour désignerla transformation en cours des pratiques numériques en architecture. Ce paradoxe souligne l’aspect disruptif des transformations des usages actuels imposées par les outils BIM.

National audience; Most of architecture agencies in France are formed by less than three people; however, the majority of projects used to demonstrate BIM uses are huge. In this paper, we present the results of an experience we made with a two architects agency who works in close collaboration with a carpentry firm for individual wood-frame houses. The objective of this experiment was to design and implement a Digital Mock-Up.; Souvent, les expériences menées sur le BIM concernent des projets de grande envergure, or la plupart des agences d'architecture françaises sont composées de moins de trois personnes. Dans cet article, nous présentons une expérience menée avec une agence d'architecture de deux personnes, qui travaille en étroite collaboration avec une entreprise de charpente pour la construction de maisons individuelles. L'objectif de l'expérience est de mettre en place un processus de travail collaboratif entre ces deux structures, basé sur l'élaboration et le partage d'une maquette numérique en phase de conception.

International audience; Most of French architectural agencies are formed by less than 3 people. Architects are generally attached to both traditional knowledge and architectural processes. Thus, BIM is sometimes perceived in France as a disruptive technology that could negatively impact the architect's work. Usually, construction projects featured as BIM projects are often too large and out of touch of small architectural agencies. This situation does not allow them to assess BIM advantages for their daily work. This context and the current strained economic situation of the AEC sector make difficult the integration of new BIM practices in small architectural agencies. The experience we made is a first step for the definition of a progressive appropriation method of BIM practices leading to a better comprehension of the contribution of these technologies in French architectural agencies. We experienced a digital mock-up (DMU) exchange between a small architectural agency and a carpentry firm with an engineering consulting department. The architects from the agency have recently begun working with a BIM software program: ArchiCAD. They are very skilled users of Autocad and 2D drawing but have a good understanding of BIM modelling potentialities. According to the model of Succar, they are still in the transition between Pre-BIM and the first stage of BIM level maturity. The particularity here is the alignment between architects choices and engineers decisions who want to solve together errors generated by the traditional process. This context is favourable for implementing and experiencing BIM stage 2. In this paper we present the context of the experience, the used methodology, the BIM implementation and finally the different encountered exchange problems and the brought solutions.
