4. PeriPy -- A High Performance OpenCL Peridynamics Package

Abstract

This paper presents a lightweight, open-source and high-performance python package for solving peridynamics problems in solid mechanics. The development of this solver is motivated by the need for fast analysis tools to achieve the large number of simulations required for `outer-loop' applications, including sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification and optimisation. Our python software toolbox utilises the heterogeneous nature of OpenCL so that it can be executed on any platform with CPU or GPU cores. We illustrate the package use through a range of industrially motivated examples, which should enable other researchers to build on and extend the solver for use in their own applications. Step improvements in execution speed and functionality over existing techniques are presented. A comparison between this solver and an existing OpenCL implementation in the literature is presented, tested on benchmarks with hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of nodes. We demonstrate the scalability of the solver on the GeForce RTX 2080 TiGPU from NVIDIA, and the memory-bound limitations are analysed. In all test cases, the implementation is between 1.4 and 10.0 times faster than a similar existing GPU implementation in the literature. Abstract

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Initially established to improve access to healthcare, particularly for primary care, the full potential of the nurse practitioner role is yet to be realised in most countries. Despite this, most countries are working to meet an ageing population's increasing healthcare needs and reduce healthcare costs and access disparities. Achieving these outcomes requires reform at multiple levels, including nurse practitioner practice pathways, education and regulation, and identifying the barriers and facilitators to optimising their primary care role. METHODS: A rapid scoping review of nurse practitioner practice pathways, education and regulation inclusive of: (1) a systematic search of Medline and CINAHL for peer-reviewed English language articles, including opinion pieces published between January 2015 and February 2022; and (2) a web-based search of nurse practitioner program entry requirements of International Nurse Regulator Collaborative country members with a protected nurse practitioner title and prescribing rights, plus the Netherlands. The individually summarised search data was integrated and synthesised using Popay's narrative approach. RESULTS: Emerging evidence from the included nurse practitioner courses (n = 86) and articles (n = 79) suggests nurse practitioners working in primary care provide safe, effective care and improve healthcare efficiencies. However, different regulatory and educational models are required if the primary care nurse practitioner is to meet growing demand. CONCLUSIONS: International variations in entry criteria, curriculum, and regulation shape the global profile of the nurse practitioner primary care workforce and their practice setting. For countries to grow their primary care nurse practitioner workforce to meet unmet needs, different entry requirements, program content and accredited post-registration transitional programs must be urgently considered.

Abstract

When explosives detonate in a confined space, repeated boundary reflections result in complex shock interactions and the formation of a uniform quasi-static pressure (QSP). For fuel-rich explosives, mixing of partially oxidized detonation products with an oxygen-rich atmosphere results in a further energy release through rapid secondary combustion or 'afterburn'. While empirical formulae and thermochemical modelling approaches have been developed to predict QSP, a lack of high-fidelity experimental data means questions remain around the deterministic quality of confined explosions, and the magnitude and mechanisms of afterburn reactions. This article presents experimental data for RDX- and PETN-based plastic explosives, demonstrating the high repeatability of the QSP generated in a sealed chamber using pressure transducers and high-speed infrared thermometry. Detonations in air, nitrogen and argon atmospheres are used to identify the contribution of afterburn to total QSP, to estimate the duration of afterburn reactions and to speculate on the flame temperature associated with this mechanism. Computational fluid dynamic modelling of the experiments was also able to accurately predict these effects. Understanding and quantifying explosions in complex environments are critical for the design of effective protective structures: the mechanisms described here provide a significant step towards the development of fast-running engineering models for internal blast events. Abstract

We have compiled a new and complete catalog of the main properties of the 1509 pulsars for which published information currently exists. The catalog includes all spin-powered pulsars as well as anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters showing coherent pulsed emission, but excludes accretion-powered systems. References are given for all data listed. We have also developed a new web interface for accessing and displaying either tabular or plotted data with the option of selecting pulsars to be displayed via logical conditions on parameter expressions. The web interface has an ``expert'' mode giving access to a wider range of parameters and allowing the use of custom databases. For users with locally installed software and database on unix or linux systems, the catalog may be accessed from a command-line interface. Abstract

The number of known pulsars has significantly increased over the previous few years. We have searched the literature to find papers announcing the discovery of pulsars or giving improved parameters for them. Data from the papers have been entered into a new pulsar catalogue that can be accessed via a web interface or from the command line (on Solaris or Linux machines). The user may request over 120 different parameters, select pulsars of interest, generate custom variables and choose between different ways of displaying or tabulating the data. Abstract

The surface erosion of polyethylene is studied under conditions characteristic of extremely high-rate heating expected in laser-driven and high energy density experiments. A coupled model for photoionization and volumetric photothermal degradation of polyethylene is developed that includes finite rate chemistry and molecular recombination of radicals. First, the model is used to explore the evolution of radicals and hydrocarbons during isochoric heating, for which it is found that polyethylene is not in chemical equilibrium for rates > --> 10 8 K / s. Then, the model is used to explore the cooperativity between photoionization and photothermal ionization during one-dimensional ablation from a pulsed heating source, accounting for coupled energy deposition, thermokinetics, thermochemistry, hydrodynamics, mechanics, and thermal conduction in the ALEGRA multi-physics code. The ablation depth per energy pulse is found to agree with an analytical model for instantaneous energy deposition and absent molecular recombination or photoionization. Otherwise, molecular recombination of radicals reduces the depth of ablation per pulse, owing to thermal stabilization on forming branched molecules. Radical formation through photoionization can be compensated for by recombination, but it accelerates ablation at high enough photoionization rates. Finally, the influence of molecular recombination on the ablation depth is found to decrease for long pulses, owing to decreased recombination reaction rates at lower vapor densities near the ablated surface. These and other findings highlight competition between the processes of scission, recombination, and photoionization during pulsed ablation of polyethylene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Peatland habitats represent key environmental resources that are a critical component in climate change mitigation strategies. However, many of these environmental settings are facing significant levels of erosion and degradation which, over time, will result in the loss of these key environments. Traditional monitoring techniques for these settings require invasive methods, disrupting the natural environment and potentially leading to further losses if incorrectly administered. In this article, we provide a non-invasive, cost-effective alternative to peatland health monitoring through the implementation of low-cost hyperspectral imaging techniques. Using common peatland plant species as a proxy for underlying peat health, we monitor the spectral response of Sphagnum plants under varying degrees of water stress to document their spectral response under these conditions. For this research, we utilise a low-cost, semi-portable High-Resolution Hyperspectral Imager capable of resolving mm-scale targets in conjunction with the ultra-low-cost Hyperspectral Smartphone that represents a completely accessible fully field portable instrument allowing for rapid and accurate on-site measurements. Both instruments are shown to provide accurate and robust results, capturing subtle changes in spectral response prior to their appearance within visual datasets enabling the use of mitigation and restoration techniques before the onset of more damaging conditions.
