The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a global health concern. The development of vaccines with high immunogenicity and safety is crucial for controlling the global COVID-19 pandemic and preventing further illness and fatalities. Here, we report the development of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate, Nanocovax, based on recombinant protein production of the extracellular (soluble) portion of the spike (S) protein of SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that Nanocovax induced high levels of S protein-specific IgG and neutralizing antibodies in three animal models: BALB/c mouse, Syrian hamster, and a non-human primate (Macaca leonina). In addition, a viral challenge study using the hamster model showed that Nanocovax protected the upper respiratory tract from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Nanocovax did not induce any adverse effects in mice (Mus musculus var. albino) and rats (Rattus norvegicus). These preclinical results indicate that Nanocovax is safe and effective.

Objectives: Development of descriptive table of gestational age (GA) based on fetal crown rump length (CRL) in Vietnam. Methods: This study was conducted at the Center for Prenatal Diagnosis, National Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology. Gestational age based on the first day of last menstrual period (LMP) ranges from 10 weeks to 14 weeks and 6 days. Pregnant women who are healthy, have regular menstrual periods, have not used hormonal drugs or assisted reproductive methods before. Have ultrasound measured the length of the crown-rump of the embryo based on the mandatory criteria. Data were analysed using SPSS 20.0 software. Results: 1008 singleton fetuses that met criteria, were predicted GA according to LMP. There were 1008 fetal crown rump length recorded. The mean CRL was 59.95 ± 6.79 (mm), the mean gestational age according to KCC was: 12.13 ± 0.75 (weeks). Gestational age was linearly correlated with fetal crown rump length according to the equation: CRL = 6.602+ GAx 4.398 and GA= 8.889 + CRLx 0.54. Conclusion: Gestational age can be calculated based on fetal crown rump length index by linear equation: GA = 8.889 + CRLx 0.54. The equations can be applied to calculate gestational age in ultrasound practice in Vietnam.

Cu Lao Cham and Ly Son are two well-known archipelagos of Vietnam for their specular landscapes and varied ecosystems including forest, cave, and agriculture. However, their bat fauna has received little attention. Between July 2017 and August 2018, we conducted a series of mammal surveys with emphasis on bats of the two archipelagos. Bats were captured by mist nets and harp traps. Echolocation calls of microchiropteran species were recorded using the PCTape system then analysed by Selena software. With reference to all available literatures and specimens from the recent surveys, we obtained confirmed records of 9 bat species from Cu Lao Cham and 3 species from Ly Son. Of these, Megaderma spasma and Taphozous melanopogon are new to Cu Lao Cham while Rhinolophus macrotis is new to Ly Son. These three species were rarely recorded from other islands of Vietnam and also uncommon within Cu Lao Cham and Ly Son. These new records not only expand the known distributional range, but also provide worthwhile notes on a narrow geographical variation in morphology and echolocation of each species.
