This work aims to study the vibration characteristics of the rotating functionally graded porous beam reinforced by graphene platelets. The beam is mounted and rotated around a hub with a constant velocity. The material properties vary along the thickness direction with two types of porosity distributions and two dispersion patterns of graphene platelet. The equations of motion based on the Timoshenko beam theory are obtained and solved using the Chebyshev-Ritz method. The effects of the parameters such as hub radius, rotating speed, weight fraction, porosity distribution, porosity coefficient, and dispersion model are presented. The present method results are also compared with numerical results available in the literature.

In this paper, the large amplitude free vibration behaviour of the functionally graded sandwich plates with porosity is investigated. The upper and lower layers of the plates are made of functionally graded material with a power-law variation (P-FGM) of the volume fraction of constituents in the thickness directions. The core layer is made of a porous material (metal foam) characterized by a porosity coefficient in the form of a harmonic function. Based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT), the nonlinear finite element model is established using nine-noded rectangular element C0 and von Karman type of nonlinearity. The accuracy and convergence of the model are validated through validation examples. Some new parametric studies are also investigated and discussed in detail.

Summary There is a growing body of literature within global health that highlights the importance of thinking actively about how research partnerships should function. Our field is slowly coming to terms with inherent power inequalities that continue to characterise many global health research partnerships.1–6 It is encouraging to see the growth and breadth of articles being written on this crucially important subject.1 5 7–9 We felt, however, that the literature is often theoretically focused, and that a short piece discussing practical and real-world examples of factors contributing to partnership development may be beneficial for global health researchers. This is, therefore, a short practical example of research in practice. It is not intended to be reflective of all the diverse challenges and themes within this area. It concerns our experiences of working together on cancer-related research in Vietnam. Collaboration between the Hanoi University of Public Health and Queen’s University Belfast formally began in 2016, so this research partnership remains young and in its formative stages. ObjectivesTo understand, describe and analyse the experiences of women with breast cancer in Vietnam when accessing and using breast cancer services.DesignDescriptive qualitative study. Women were interviewed about their experiences from the first time they became aware of symptoms or changes to their body through treatment and post-treatment. This study is the first descriptive study on breast cancer in Vietnam from the perspective of women with a breast cancer diagnosis.ParticipantsWomen (n=13) who had completed or were still receiving treatment for breast cancer, purposively recruited from the north and south of Vietnam.ResultsAn analysis of the experiences of women with breast cancer in Vietnam revealed a lack of awareness and knowledge about breast cancer and symptoms. Family and social support were described as key factors influencing whether a woman accesses and uses breast cancer services. Cost of treatment and out-of-pocket expenditures limited access to services and resulted in significant financial challenges for women and their families.ConclusionsVietnam has made huge strides in improving cancer care, and is tackling a complex and expanding public health challenge, however, there are a number of areas requiring strengthening and future research. While Vietnam has successfully expanded social health insurance coverage, changes that increase the percentage of costs covered for specific treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, could benefit women and their families.

Stigma has been identified as a major barrier to HIV response. While much is known about stigma directed towards people living with HIV (PLHIV), less is known about stigma experienced by health workers who treat PLHIV. This study aims to explore the perceptions and experiences of health workers regarding how stigma influences their work with HIV-positive patients. The study employed a qualitative design involving individual semi-structured in-depth interviews with 14 health workers, purposively selected from hospitals and detention centres for people who use drugs and sex workers in Hanoi, Vietnam. Findings showed that the stigma experienced by health workers may be organised around several themes: (1) lack of social prestige associated with HIV work; (2) fear of infection expressed by family members; (3) feelings of being devalued within the healthcare field; and (4) work-related stress and burnout, especially for staff working in detention centres for drug users and female sex workers. Efforts are needed to improve the public image of HIV work, scale up stigma reduction, enhance stress management and create a safe and supportive working environment for health workers.
