This work pioneers to combine fast self-assembly of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) nanocage-based giant surfactants with high etching contrast and directed self-assembly for reliable long-range lateral order to create well-aligned sub-10 nm line nanopatterns via reactive ion etching (RIE). Polystyrene-block-oligo(dimethylsiloxane) substituted POSS (PS-b-oDMS 7 POSS) with seven oligo(dimethylsiloxane) at the corners of the POSS nanocage and one polystyrene (PS) tail is designed and synthesized as a giant surfactant with self-assembly behaviors like block copolymer (BCP). In contrast to BCP, oDMS 7 POSS gives a volume-persistent "nanoatom" particle with higher mobility for fast self-assembly and higher segregation strength with PS for smaller feature size. By taking advantage of directed self-assembly using nano-trench fabricated by electron beam lithography, well-ordered nanostructured monolayer with well-aligned parallel oDMS 7 POSS cylinders can be formed by confined self-assembly within the nano-trench. With the optimization of the RIE treatment using O 2 as an etchant, the high etching contrast from the oDMS 7 POSS and PS gives the formation of well-defined line nanopatterns with sub-10 nm critical dimension that can serve as a mask for pattern transfer in lithography. Biomimicking natural structures to create structural materials with superior mechanical performance is an area of extensive attention, yet achieving both high strength and toughness remains challenging. This study presents a novel bottom-up approach using self-assembled block copolymer templating to synthesize bicontinuous nanohybrids composed of well-ordered nanonetwork hydroxyapatite (HAp) embedded in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). This structuring transforms intrinsically brittle HAp into a ductile material, while hybridization with PMMA alleviates the strength reduction caused by porosity. The resultant bicontinuous PMMA/HAp nanohybrids, reinforced at the interface, exhibit high strength and toughness due to the combined effects of topology, nanosize, and hybridization. This work suggests a conceptual framework for fabricating flexible thin films with mechanical properties significantly surpassing those of traditional composites and top-down approaches.

This study aims to develop a strategy for the fabrication of multilayer nanopatterns through sequential self-assembly of lamella-forming polystyrene- block -polydimethylsiloxane (PS- b -PDMS) block copolymer (BCP) from solvent annealing. By simply tuning the solvent selectivity, a variety of self-assembled BCP thin-film morphologies, including hexagonal perforated lamellae (HPL), parallel cylinders, and spheres, can be obtained from single-composition PS- b -PDMS. By taking advantage of reactive ion etching (RIE), topographic SiO 2 monoliths with well-ordered arrays of hexagonally packed holes, parallel lines, and hexagonally packed dots can be formed. Subsequently, hole-on-dot and line-on-hole hierarchical textures can be created through a layer-by-layer process with RIE treatment as evidenced experimentally and confirmed theoretically. The results demonstrated the feasibility of creating three-dimensional (3D) nanopatterning from the sequential self-assembly of single-composition PS- b -PDMS via solvent annealing, providing an appealing process for nano-MEMS manufacturing based on BCP lithography.

This work aims to systematically examine the topology effect on the self-assembly of block copolymers. Compositionally, symmetric polystyrene- block -polydimethylsiloxane block copolymers (BCPs) with different chain topologies (diblock, three-arm star-block, and four-arm star-block) and various molecular weights are synthesized. These purposely designed block copolymers are used as a model system to investigate the topology effect on order-to-disorder transition temperature ( T ODT ) by temperature-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering experiments. An increase of the T ODT is observed when the arm number of BCPs with equivalent arm length (i.e., molecular weight) is increased from one to four. Based on the random-phase approximation (RPA), Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (χ) is determined from the regression of the measured T ODT . This work aims to examine the effect of self-assembly on the chiroptic responses of the achiral block copolymer (BCP) polystyrene- b -poly(ethylene oxide) (PS- b -PEO) associated with chiral luminophores, ( R )- or ( S )-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (( R )- or ( S )-BINOL), through hydrogen bonding. With the formation of a well-ordered helical phase (H*), significantly induced circular dichroism (ICD) signals for the PEO block in the mixture can be found. Most interestingly, a remarkable amplification with an extremely large dissymmetry factor of luminescence ( g lum ) from 10 -3 to 0.3 (i.e., induced circular polarized luminescence (iCPL) behavior) for the chiral BINOLs in the mixture can be achieved by the formation of the helical phase (H*) via mesochiral self-assembly. As a result, by taking advantage of BCP for mesochiral self-assembly, it is feasible to create a nanostructured monolith with substantial optical activities, offering promising applications in the design of chiroptic devices.

By taking advantage of the effects of solvent selectivity and topology on high-χ block copolymer (BCP) for self-assembly, network phases with high packing frustration can be formed in self-assembled polystyrene- b -polydimethylsiloxane (PS- b -PDMS). Apart from gyroid with trigonal structure and diamond with tetrahedral structure, a peculiar network phase with space group of [Formula: see text] (Frank-Kasper structure) can be found in six-arm star-block PS- b -PDMS as evidenced by small-angle x-ray scattering. Electron tomography results reveal the network phase with alternating connection of three and four struts. The observed phase behaviors suggest that the network formation is built from the bisectors of dispersive spheres in the Frank-Kasper phase, instead of building connections among them, and thus decipher the origins of complex phase formation due to the adaptive character of malleable mesoatoms.

Background: Depression is a common issue among university students and has been particularly exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, limited research has specifically focused on depression among university entrants., Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression severity and identify associated factors during different phases of the COVID-19 pandemic using health screening questionnaires completed by matriculated university students in Singapore., Methods: A repeated cross-sectional study was conducted at a public university in Singapore. Data from health screening questionnaires administered in 2020 and 2021, involving 15,630 newly enrolled university students, were analyzed. The questionnaires covered students' sociodemographic information, physical health status, own and family medical history, lifestyle behaviours, and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). The PHQ-9 was used to measure the severity of depressive symptoms, categorizing into moderate to severe depressive symptoms (MSDS), mild depressive symptoms (MDS), or no depressive symptom (NDS). Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the sociodemographic, physical and behavioural correlates of depression., Results: The prevalence of MSDS was 1% in both 2020 and 2021, while the rates for MDS were 1.93% in 2020 and 1.64% in 2021. In the 2020 cohort, male freshmen who reported better health had a lower likelihood of experiencing depression. Conversely, students of Malay ethnicity, those majoring in Engineering, those with multiple chronic diseases, monthly alcohol consumers, current smokers, and those with a family history of mental disorder had a higher likelihood of experiencing depression. Moreover, students who lived on-campus in the 2021 cohort were less likely to experience depression than those living off-campus. However, the associations between academic majors, alcohol consumption, and smoking with depression were not significant in the 2021 cohort., Conclusions: This study reported a low prevalence of both MSDS and MDS among university entrants in Singapore. The study further identified three categories of factors associated with depression: sociodemographic, physical, and behavioural. This study suggests policy interventions to enhance targeted social support that address each student group's specific requirements and susceptibilities. Chirality transfer is essential to acquire helical hierarchical superstructures from the self-assembly of supramolecular materials. By taking advantage of chirality transfers at different length scales through intra-chain and inter-chain chiral interactions, helical phase (H*) can be formed from the self-assembly of chiral block copolymers (BCPs*). In this study, chiral triblock terpolymers, polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PEO-PLLA), and polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-P4VP-PLLA) are synthesized for self-assembly. For PS-PEO-PLLA with an achiral PEO mid-block that is compatible with PLLA (chiral end-block), H* can be formed while the block length is below a critical value. By contrast, for the one with achiral P4VP mid-block that is incompatible with PLLA, the formation of H* phase would be suppressed regardless of the length of the mid-block, giving cylinder phase. Those results elucidate a new type of chirality transfer across the phase domain that is referred as cross-domain chirality transfer, providing complementary understanding of the chirality transfer at the interface of phase-separated domains., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Inspired by knobby starfish, this work demonstrates a bottom-up approach for fabricating a calcite single-crystal (CSC) with a diamond structure by exploiting the self-assembly of the block copolymer and corresponding templated synthesis. Similar to the knobby starfish, the diamond structure of the CSC gives rise to a brittle-to-ductile transition. Most interestingly, the diamond-structured CSC fabricated exhibits exceptional specific energy absorption and strength with lightweight character superior to natural materials and artificial counterparts from a top-down approach due to the nanosized effect. This approach provides the feasibility for creating mechanical metamaterials with the combined effects of the topology and nanosize on the mechanical performance.

The global population has been severely affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, however, with older age identified as a risk factor, children have been underprioritized. This article discusses the factors contributing to the less severe response observed in children following infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), including, differing viral entry receptor expression and immune responses. It also discusses how emerging and future variants could present a higher risk to children, including those with underlying comorbidities, in developing severe disease. Furthermore, this perspective discusses the differential inflammatory markers between critical and non-critical cases, as well as discussing the types of variants that may be more pathogenic to children. Herein, this work aims to directly visualize the morphological evolution of the controlled self-assembly of star-block polystyrene- block -polydimethylsiloxane (PS- b -PDMS) thin films via in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. With an environmental chip, possessing a built-in metal wire-based microheater fabricated by the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technique, in situ TEM observations can be conducted under low-dose conditions to investigate the development of film-spanning perpendicular cylinders in the block copolymer (BCP) thin films via a self-alignment process. Owing to the free-standing condition, a symmetric condition of the BCP thin films can be formed for thermal annealing under vacuum with neutral air surface, whereas an asymmetric condition can be formed by an air plasma treatment on one side of the thin film that creates an end-capped neutral layer. A systematic comparison of the time-resolved self-alignment process in the symmetric and asymmetric conditions can be carried out, giving comprehensive insights for the self-alignment process via the nucleation and growth mechanism.

Many sophisticated chiral materials are found in living organisms, giving specific functions and required complexity. Owing to the remarkable optical properties of chiral materials, they have drawn significant attention for the development of synthetic materials to give optical activities for appealing applications. In contrast to a top-down approach, the bottom-up approach from self-assembled systems with chiral host-achiral guest and achiral guest-chiral host for induced circular dichroism and induced circularly polarized luminescence has greatly emerged because of its cost-effective advantage with easy fabrication for mesoscale assembly. Self-assembled hierarchical textures with chiral sense indeed give significant amplification of the dissymmetry factors of absorption and luminescence (g abs and g lum ), resulting from the formation of well-ordered superstructures and phases with the building of chromophores and luminophores. By taking advantage of the microphase separation of block copolymers via self-assembly, a variety of well-defined chiral nanostructures can be formed as tertiary superstructures that can be further extended to quaternary phases in bulk or thin film. Herein, this work aims to carry out controlled self-assembly of single-composition block copolymer for the fabrication of various nanonetwork silica monoliths. With the use of lamellae-forming polystyrene- block -polydimethylsiloxane (PS- b -PDMS), nanonetwork-structured films could be fabricated by solvent annealing using a PS-selective solvent (chloroform). By simply tuning the flow rate of nitrogen purge to the PS-selective solvent for the controlled self-assembly of the PS- b -PDMS, gyroid- and diamond-structured monoliths can be formed due to the difference in the effective volume of PS in the PS- b -PDMS during solvent annealing. As a result, well-ordered nanonetwork SiO 2 (silica) monoliths can be fabricated by templated sol-gel reaction using hydrofluoric acid etched PS- b -PDMS film as a template followed by the removal of the PS. This bottom-up approach for the fabrication of nanonetwork materials through templated synthesis is appealing to create nanonetwork materials for various applications.

Inspired by Mantis shrimp, this work aims to suggest a bottom-up approach for the fabrication of nanonetwork hydroxyapatite (HAp) thin film using self-assembled polystyrene- block -polydimethylsiloxane (PS- b -PDMS) block copolymer (BCP) with a diamond nanostructure as a template for templated sol-gel reaction. By introducing poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) into precursors of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and triethyl phosphite, which limits the growth of forming HAp nanoparticles, well-ordered nanonetwork HAp thin film can be fabricated. Based on nanoindentation results, the well-ordered nanonetwork HAp shows high energy dissipation compared to the intrinsic HAp. Moreover, the uniaxial microcompression test for the nanonetwork HAp shows high energy absorption per volume and high compression strength, outperforming many cellular materials due to the topologic effect of the well-ordered network at the nanoscale. This work highlights the potential of exploiting BCP templated synthesis to fabricate ionic solid materials with a well-ordered nanonetwork monolith, giving rise to the brittle-to-ductile transition, and thus appealing mechanical properties with the character of mechanical metamaterials.

This paper presents a facile method for fabricating a thin-film sample with a high asymmetry value of induced circularly polarized luminescence (iCPL) (|g lum | = 2.0 × 10 -3 ). The method involves mixing stereoregular poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and chiral chromophore (2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(9-anthryl)ethanol (TFAE)) to form a complex with a dynamic helical conformation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) associated with TFAE via hydrogen bonding. This dynamic helical conformation can be stabilized by the stereocomplexation of a pair of stereoregular PMMA, where the TFAE is sandwiched between a double-helix isotactic PMMA and single-helix syndiotactic PMMA, resulting in a preferential one-handed helical conformation with a high value of iCPL from self-assembly.

This work aims to demonstrate a facile method for the controlled orientation of nanostructures of block copolymer (BCP) thin films. A simple diblock copolymer system, polystyrene- block -polydimethylsiloxane (PS- b -PDMS), is chosen to demonstrate vacuum-driven orientation for solving the notorious low-surface-energy problem of silicon-based BCP nanopatterning. By taking advantage of the pressure dependence of the surface tension of polymeric materials, a neutral air surface for the PS- b -PDMS thin film can be formed under a high vacuum degree (∼10 -4 Pa), allowing the formation of the film-spanning perpendicular cylinders and lamellae upon thermal annealing. In contrast to perpendicular lamellae, a long-range lateral order for forming perpendicular cylinders can be efficiently achieved through the self-alignment mechanism for induced ordering from the top and bottom of the free-standing thin film.

Through the morphological evolution to give highly optimized complex architectures at different length scales, fine-tuned textures for specific functions in living organisms can be achieved in nature such as a bone core with very complicated porous architecture to attain a significant structural efficiency attributed to delicately structured ligaments and density gradients. As inspired by nature, materials with periodic network structures (i.e., well-defined porous textures) in the nanoscale are appealing and promising for innovative properties. Biomimicking from nature, organic and/or inorganic nanonetworks can be synthetically fabricated, giving broadness and effectiveness when tuning the desired properties. Metamaterials are materials whose effective properties do not result from the bulk behavior of the constituent materials but rather mainly from their deliberate structuring. The performances of fabricating metamaterials will depend on the control of size, shape, order, and orientation of the forming textures. One of the appealing textures for the deliberate structuring is network architecture. Network materials possess self-supporting frameworks, open-cell character, high porosity, and large specific surface area, giving specific functions and complexity for diverse applications. As demonstrated by recent studies, exceptional mechanical performances such as negative thermal expansion, negative Poisson's ratio, and twisting under uniaxial forces can be achieved by the effect of the deliberate structuring with nanonetwork textures. In contrast to a top-down approach, a bottom-up approach is cost-effective, and also it can overcome the size limitation to reach nanoscale fabrication. It can be foreseen that network metamaterials with a feature size of tens of nanometers (referred as nanonetwork metamaterials) may provide new comprehension of the structure and property relationships for various materials. The self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) is one of the most used methods to build up well-ordered nanostructured phases from a bottom-up approach with precise control of size, shape, and orientation in the thin films for realistic applications. In this account, we summarize recent advancements in the fabrication of nanohybrids and nanoporous materials with well-ordered nanonetwork textures even with controlled helicity by combining block copolymer self-assembly and templated syntheses for mechanical and optical applications with superior properties beyond nature as metamaterials as well as chiral metamaterials with new properties for chiroptic applications such as chiral plasmonics, beam splitter, and negative refraction. The description of the fundamental facets of a nonconventional structure-property relationship with the characters of metamaterials and the state-of-the-art methodologies to fabricate nanonetworks using block copolymer self-assembly will stimulate research activities for the development of nanonetwork metamaterials with exceptional individual and multifunctional properties for futuristic devices.

Significant enhancement of segment-scale chirality, as measured by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), is observed in the helical phase (H*) of polylactide-based chiral block copolymers (BCPs*) due to the mesoscale chirality of the microphase-separated domains. Here, we report a weaker, yet meaningful, enhancement on the VCD signal of a double gyroid phase (DG) as compared to a double diamond phase (DD) and disordered phase from the same diblock BCPs*. Residual VCD enhancement indicates a weak degree of chiral symmetry breaking, implying the formation of a chiral double gyroid (DG*) instead of the canonical achiral form. Calculations on the basis of orientational self-consistent field theory, comparing coupling between the segmental-scale preference of an intradomain twist and morphological chirality, show that a transition between DG and DG* takes place above the critical chiral strength, driving a weak volume asymmetry between the two enantiomeric single networks of DG*. The formation of nanostructures with controllable mesoscale chiral asymmetry indicates a pathway for the amplification of optical activity driven by self-assembly.

Herein, this work aims to fabricate well-ordered nanonetwork epoxy resin modified with poly(butyl acrylate)- b -poly(methyl methacrylate) (PBA- b -PMMA) block copolymer (BCP) for enhanced energy dissipation using a self-assembled diblock copolymer of polystyrene- b -poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PS- b -PDMS) with gyroid and diamond structures as templates. A systematic study of mechanical properties using nanoindentation of epoxy resin with gyroid- and diamond-structures after modification revealed significant enhancement in energy dissipation, with the values of 0.36 ± 0.02 nJ (gyroid) and 0.43 ± 0.03 nJ (diamond), respectively, when compared to intrinsic epoxy resin (approximately 0.02 ± 0.002 nJ) with brittle characteristics. This enhanced property is attributed to the synergic effect of the deliberate structure with well-ordered nanonetwork texture and the toughening of BCP-based modifiers at the molecular level. In addition to the deliberate structural effect from the nanonetwork texture, the BCP modifier composed of epoxy-philic hard segment and epoxy-phobic soft segment led to dispersed soft-segment domains in the nanonetwork-structured epoxy matrix with superior interfacial strength for the enhancement of applied energy dissipation.

Background: Narrative e-Writing Intervention (NeW-I) is a novel psycho-socio-spiritual intervention which aims to bridge gaps in paediatric palliative care by providing anticipatory grief support to parent-caregivers who are looking after their child with a chronic life-threatening illness in Singapore. This is done via a therapist-facilitated smartphone app that focuses on strengths and meaning derived from parents' caregiving journey. NeW-I is empirically informed by an international systematic review and a Singapore-based qualitative inquiry on the lived experience of parental bereavement and supported by anticipatory grief interventions literature for improving the holistic well-being for parent-caregivers of seriously ill children. NeW-I is implemented in Singapore as an open-label two-armed randomized controlled trial comprising an intervention and control group., Methods: This study examined the acceptability (via analysis of participants' post-intervention qualitative feedback and responses to a post-intervention evaluation survey) and feasibility (via records and memos of therapists' experience of delivering the intervention) of NeW-I among 26 intervention participants drawn from the larger trial., Results: Framework analysis of participants' post-intervention feedback revealed four themes, namely: (i) Meaningful opportunity for reflection, (ii) Congruity with parent-caregivers' needs, (iii) Compatibility of online narrative writing and (iv) Sustainability and enhancement recommendations. The post-intervention evaluation survey showed that participants were overall satisfied with their NeW-I experience with a large number of participants acknowledging that NeW-I had improved their spiritual well-being, hopefulness about the future and perception of social support that was available to them, as well as lessened their feelings of sadness and depression, caregiver burden and fear and anxiety about their child's illness. Herein, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) measurements were carried out to study the kinetics of cold-crystallized poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) at the molecular level via qualitative analysis. The amplification of the VCD signals from intra- and inter-chain chiral interactions suggests the formation of partially ordered PDLA, followed by heterogeneous nucleation for crystallization. These results were further supported by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses.

A newly developed branded generic of a moxifloxacin (MOX) 400-mg tablet formulation was manufactured prior to this study. A bioequivalence (BE) study was done to assess the pharmacokinetics of the formulation using a randomized, open-label, 2-period crossover, 2-sequence, and single-dose experiment. Thirty healthy male volunteers were recruited. The test formulation, Flonoxin 400 mg, was compared with the reference formulation, Avelox 400 mg. The pharmacokinetic parameters of MOX were calculated based on the plasma drug concentration-time profile. Noncompartmental analysis was performed to determine its safety and tolerability. The 90% confidence intervals (CIs) were 88.5%-104.6%, 96.1%-101.1%, and 96.8%-100.7% for C max , AUC 0-t , and AUC 0-inf , respectively. Objectives: To identify and describe caregiver profiles based on their psychosocial health characteristics over a 12-month period and transitions among these profiles, to determine if stroke rehabilitation use at 12 months post-stroke differed by caregiver profile transition patterns, and to investigate if caregiver profiles at 3 months post-stroke moderate the association of stroke rehabilitation use at 3 months and 12 months post-stroke after accounting for covariates., Design: Latent profile transition analysis of caregiver psychosocial health with stroke rehabilitation use at 12 month post-stroke as outcome., Setting and Participants: A total of 149 stroke patient-caregiver dyads from the Singapore Stroke Study., Methods: Cross-sectional latent profile analyses were conducted on caregiver psychosocial health indicators of burden, depression, health status, quality of relationship with patient, and social support. Changes in latent profile classification over 3 time points (baseline, 3 months, and 12 months post-stroke) were analyzed using latent transition analysis. A transition model with stroke rehabilitation use at 12 months post-stroke as the outcome was tested after accounting for covariates., Results: Two distinct caregiver psychosocial health latent profiles were found across time: nondistressed and distressed. Most caregivers were classified as nondistressed and remained nondistressed over time. Distressed caregivers at baseline were 76% likely to become nondistressed at 12 month post-stroke. Regardless of profile transition patterns, nondistressed caregivers at 12 months post-stroke tended to have cared for stroke rehabilitation nonusers at 12 months post-stroke. Patient depression explained profile classification at 3 months and 12 months post-stroke. After accounting for covariates, rehabilitation users at 3 months post-stroke tended to continue using rehabilitation at 12 months post-stroke only when they had nondistressed caregivers at 3 months post-stroke., Conclusions and Implications: Whether caregiver adaptation explains the associations between the latent profile transition patterns and rehabilitation use at 12 months post-stroke should be examined. Herein, we aim to develop a facile method for the fabrication of mechanical metamaterials from templated polymerization of thermosets including phenolic and epoxy resins using self-assembled block copolymer, polystyrene-polydimethylsiloxane with tripod network (gyroid), and tetrapod network (diamond) structures, as templates. Nanoindentation studies on the nanonetwork thermosets fabricated reveal enhanced energy dissipation from intrinsic brittle thermosets due to the deliberate structuring; the calculated energy dissipation for gyroid phenolic resins is 0.23 nJ whereas the one with diamond structure gives a value of 0.33 nJ. Consistently, the gyroid-structured epoxy gives a high energy dissipation value of 0.57 nJ, and the one with diamond structure could reach 0.78 nJ. These enhanced properties are attributed to the isotropic periodicity of the nanonetwork texture with plastic deformation, and the higher number of struts in the tetrapod diamond network in contrast to tripod gyroid, as confirmed by the finite element analysis.

A series of cubic network phases was obtained from the self-assembly of a single-composition lamellae (L)-forming block copolymer (BCP) polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS- b -PDMS) through solution casting using a PS-selective solvent. An unusual network phase in diblock copolymers, double-primitive phase (DP) with space group of [Formula: see text], can be observed. With the reduction of solvent evaporation rate for solution casting, a double-diamond phase (DD) with space group of [Formula: see text] can be formed. By taking advantage of thermal annealing, order-order transitions from the DP and DD phases to a double-gyroid phase (DG) with space group of [Formula: see text] can be identified. The order-order transitions from DP (hexapod network) to DD (tetrapod network), and finally to DG (trigonal planar network) are attributed to the reduction of the degree of packing frustration within the junction (node), different from the predicted Bonnet transformation from DD to DG, and finally to DP based on enthalpic consideration only. The synthesis of two (2) novel triblock terpolymers of the ABC type and one (1) of the BAC type, where A, B and C are chemically different segments, such as polystyrene (PS), poly(butadiene) (PB 1,4 ) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), is reported; moreover, their corresponding molecular and bulk characterizations were performed. Very low dimensions are evident from the characterization in bulk from transmission electron microscopy studies, verified by small-angle X-ray data, since sub-16 nm domains are evident in all three cases. The self-assembly results justify the assumptions that the high Flory-Huggins parameter, χ , even in low molecular weights, leads to significantly well-ordered structures, despite the complexity of the systems studied. Nanonetwork-structured materials can be found in nature and synthetic materials. A double gyroid (DG) with a pair of chiral networks but opposite chirality can be formed from the self-assembly of diblock copolymers. For triblock terpolymers, an alternating gyroid (G A ) with two chiral networks from distinct end blocks can be formed; however, the network chirality could be positive or negative arbitrarily, giving an achiral phase. Here, by taking advantage of chirality transfer at different length scales, G A with controlled chirality can be achieved through the self-assembly of a chiral triblock terpolymer. With the homochiral evolution from monomer to multichain domain morphology through self-assembly, the triblock terpolymer composed of a chiral end block with a single-handed helical polymer chain gives the chiral network from the chiral end block having a particular handed network. Spiral hierarchical superstructures were found in the self-assembly of chiral block copolymers (BCPs*) composed of a chiral poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and an achiral polystyrene (PS) as major and minor blocks, respectively. The PLLA helical chain with semiflexible rod-like character as compared to the random coil of PS results in self-assembly with a conformational asymmetry effect overwhelming the compositional one. Consequently, instead of the forming PS cylinder microdomains in the PLLA matrix, a smectic liquid-crystal-like bilayer sandwiched with PLLA and PS microdomains will be formed. Owing to twisting and bending due to the chiral cholesteric liquid-crystal-like force field combined with steric hindrance at the chiral interface, the forming bilayers (twisted ribbon) will develop into either a concentric lamellar texture from scrolling or roll-cake textures from spiraling. This study might bring a concept for the formation of spiral hierarchical superstructures from self-assembled bilayers for device application.

Background: A novel evidence-based Narrative e-Writing Intervention (NeW-I) has been developed and tested in Singapore to advance psychosociospiritual support for parents of children with chronic life-threatening illnesses. NeW-I is informed by an international systematic review and a Singapore-based qualitative inquiry on the lived experience of parental bereavement and supported by literature on anticipatory grief interventions for improving the holistic well-being of parent caregivers of seriously ill children., Objective: This study's aim was to provide an accessible platform, NeW-I-which is a strengths- and meaning-focused and therapist-facilitated mobile app and web-based counseling platform-that aims to enhance quality of life, spiritual well-being, hope, and perceived social support and reduce depressive symptoms, caregiver burden, and risk of complicated grief among parents of children with chronic life-threatening illnesses., Methods: The NeW-I therapist-facilitated web-based platform comprises a mobile app and a website (both of which have the same content and functionality). NeW-I has been implemented in Singapore as a pilot open-label randomized controlled trial comprising intervention and control groups. Both primary and secondary outcomes will be self-reported by participants through questionnaires. In collaboration with leading pediatric palliative care providers in Singapore, the trial aims to enroll 36 participants in each group (N=72), so that when allowing for 30% attrition at follow-up, the sample size will be adequate to detect a small effect size of 0.2 in the primary outcome measure, with 90% power and two-sided significance level of at least .05. The potential effectiveness of NeW-I and the accessibility and feasibility of implementing and delivering the intervention will be assessed., Results: Funding support and institutional review board approval for this study have been secured. The interplay between polymer-polymer and polymer-solvent interactions as well as interactions that impose secondary structures determines the conformation of polymer chains in dilute solution. Polypeptoids-poly( N -substituted glycines) have been shown to form helical secondary structures primarily driven by steric interactions from chiral, bulky side chains, while polypeptoids with a racemic mixture of the same side chains lead to unstructured coil chains with a shorter Kuhn length. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) of the polypeptoids in dilute solution reveals that the helical polypeptoids are only locally stiffer than the coil chains formed from the racemic analogue, but exhibit overall flexibility. We show that chain conformations of both helical and coil polypeptoids (in terms of radius of gyration, R g ) are insensitive to solvent quality (parametrized by the second virial coefficient, A 2 ). Potential effects from the bulky, chiral/racemic side chains dominating chain conformations are excluded by comparison with an achiral polypeptoid lacking side chain chirality. The specific interactions between polypeptoid segments are likely dominating the chain conformations in this type of polypeptoids as opposed to polymer-solvent interactions or energetic contributions from the helical secondary structure.

Supramolecular soft crystals are periodic structures that are formed by the hierarchical assembly of complex constituents, and occur in a broad variety of 'soft-matter' systems 1 . Such soft crystals exhibit many of the basic features (such as three-dimensional lattices and space groups) and properties (such as band structure and wave propagation) of their 'hard-matter' atomic solid counterparts, owing to the generic symmetry-based principles that underlie both 2,3 . 'Mesoatomic' building blocks of soft-matter crystals consist of groups of molecules, whose sub-unit-cell configurations couple strongly to supra-unit-scale symmetry. As yet, high-fidelity experimental techniques for characterizing the detailed local structure of soft matter and, in particular, for quantifying the effects of multiscale reconfigurability are quite limited. Here, by applying slice-and-view microscopy to reconstruct the micrometre-scale domain morphology of a solution-cast block copolymer double gyroid over large specimen volumes, we unambiguously characterize its supra-unit and sub-unit cell morphology. Our multiscale analysis reveals a qualitative and underappreciated distinction between this double-gyroid soft crystal and hard crystals in terms of their structural relaxations in response to forces-namely a non-affine mode of sub-unit-cell symmetry breaking that is coherently maintained over large multicell dimensions. Subject to inevitable stresses during crystal growth, the relatively soft strut lengths and diameters of the double-gyroid network can easily accommodate deformation, while the angular geometry is stiff, maintaining local correlations even under strong symmetry-breaking distortions. These features contrast sharply with the rigid lengths and bendable angles of hard crystals.

Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) represent a new type of energy-storage devices, which have combined merits of high energy density Li-ion battery and high power density supercapacitor. Nevertheless, one significant challenge for LICs is the imbalanced kinetics between the fast capacitive cathode and relatively slow intercalation anode that limit the energy-storage performance. Here, the asymmetric LIC devices were developed based on a nitrogen-doped, carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) cathode and a three-dimensional, nano-network-structured, conversion reaction-based Ni/NiO/C anode. These nanostructures associated with both the cathode and anode enable rapid electron and ions transport in the LIC devices, which allows the asymmetric LICs to be operated on either high energy mode (energy density of 114.7 Wh/kg at power density of 98.0 W/kg) or high power mode (power density of 60.1 kW/kg at energy density of 17.6 Wh/kg). The device also exhibited long-term cycle stability with 87% capacitance retention after 12 000 cycles. These results demonstrate that the rational design of nanoporous electrode structures can deliver a balanced, high-performance-activated cZIF-8|Ni/NiO/C-based lithium-ion capacitor.

We explore the generality of the influence of segment chirality on the self-assembled structure of achiral-chiral diblock copolymers. Poly(cyclohexylglycolide) (PCG)-based chiral block copolymers (BCPs*), poly(benzyl methacrylate)- b -poly(d-cyclohexylglycolide) (PBnMA-PDCG) and PBnMA- b -poly(l-cyclohexyl glycolide) (PBnMA-PLCG), were synthesized for purposes of systematic comparison with polylactide (PLA)-based BCPs*, previously shown to exhibit chirality transfer from monomeric unit to the multichain domain morphology. Opposite-handed PCG helical chains in the enantiomeric BCPs* were identified by the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) studies revealing transfer from chiral monomers to chiral intrachain conformation. We report further VCD evidence of chiral interchain interactions, consistent with some amounts of handed skew configurations of PCG segments in a melt state packing. Finally, we show by electron tomography [3D transmission electron microscope tomography (3D TEM)] that chirality at the monomeric and intrachain level ultimately manifests in the symmetry of microphase-separated, multichain morphologies: a helical phase (H*) of hexagonally, ordered, helically shaped tubular domains whose handedness agrees with the respective monomeric chirality. Critically, unlike previous PLA-based BCP*s, the lack of a competing crystalline state of the chiral PCGs allowed determination that H* is an equilibrium phase of chiral PBnMA-PCG. We compared different measures of chirality at the monomer scale for PLA and PCG, and argued, on the basis of comparison with mean-field theory results for chiral diblock copolymer melts, that the enhanced thermodynamic stability of the mesochiral H* morphology may be attributed to the relatively stronger chiral intersegment forces, ultimately tracing from the effects of a bulkier chiral side group on its main chain., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest statement: The authors are the inventors of a provisional patent application filed by the National Tsing Hua University related to the results reported here.

The development of well ordered nanonetwork materials (in particular gyroid-structured materials) has been investigated using a block-copolymer template for templated electroless plating as an example system for the examination of network formation using X-ray scattering. By taking advantage of the nucleation and growth mechanism of templated electroless plating, gyroid-structured Au was successfully fabricated through the development of Au nanoparticles, then tripods and branched tripods, and finally an ordered network. Each stage in the development of the network phase could then be examined by combining real-space transmission electron microscopy observations with reciprocal-space small-angle X-ray scattering results. The fingerprint scattering profile of the building block for the network ( i.e. the tripod of the gyroid) could be well fitted with the form factor of an effective sphere, and the diffraction results from the ordered network could thus be reasonably addressed. As a result, the examination of well ordered network materials can be simplified as the scattering from the form factor of a sphere convoluted with the nodes of its structure factor, providing a facile method of identifying the network phases from X-ray scattering data.

Background: While studies suggest that nutritional supplementation may reduce aggressive behavior in children, few have examined their effects on specific forms of aggression. This study tests the primary hypothesis that omega-3 (ω-3), both alone and in conjunction with social skills training, will have particular post-treatment efficacy for reducing childhood reactive aggression relative to baseline., Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, stratified, placebo-controlled, factorial trial, a clinical sample of 282 children with externalizing behavior aged 7-16 years was randomized into ω-3 only, social skills only, ω-3 + social skills, and placebo control groups. Treatment duration was 6 months. The primary outcome measure was reactive aggression collected at 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, with antisocial behavior as a secondary outcome., Results: Children in the ω-3-only group showed a short-term reduction (at 3 and 6 months) in self-report reactive aggression, and also a short-term reduction in overall antisocial behavior. Sensitivity analyses and a robustness check replicated significant interaction effects. Effect sizes (d) were small, ranging from 0.17 to 0.31., Conclusions: Findings provide some initial support for the efficacy of ω-3 in reducing reactive aggression over and above standard care (medication and parent training), but yield only preliminary and limited support for the efficacy of ω-3 in reducing overall externalizing behavior in children. Future studies could test further whether ω-3 shows promise in reducing more reactive, impulsive forms of aggression.

Triply-periodic networks (TPNs), like the well-known gyroid and diamond network phases, abound in soft matter assemblies, from block copolymers (BCPs), lyotropic liquid crystals and surfactants to functional architectures in biology. While TPNs are, in reality, volume-filling patterns of spatially-varying molecular composition, physical and structural models most often reduce their structure to lower-dimensional geometric objects: the 2D interfaces between chemical domains; and the 1D skeletons that thread through inter-connected, tubular domains. These lower-dimensional structures provide a useful basis of comparison to idealized geometries based on triply-periodic minimal, or constant-mean curvature surfaces, and shed important light on the spatially heterogeneous packing of molecular constituents that form the networks. Here, we propose a simple, efficient and flexible method to extract a 1D skeleton from 3D volume composition data of self-assembled networks. We apply this method to both self-consistent field theory predictions as well as experimental electron microtomography reconstructions of the double-gyroid phase of an ABA triblock copolymer. We further demonstrate how the analysis of 1D skeleton, 2D inter-domain surfaces, and combinations therefore, provide physical and structural insight into TPNs, across multiple length scales. Specifically, we propose and compare simple measures of network chirality as well as domain thickness, and analyze their spatial and statistical distributions in both ideal (theoretical) and non-ideal (experimental) double gyroid assemblies.

Here we aim to develop a facile emulsion-based method to prepare tripod gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with high suspension stability in an aqueous environment. A gyroid-structured polymer template formed by the hydrolysis of a degradable block copolymer, polystyrene (PS)-b-poly(l-lactide), is used for the fabrication of AuNPs. Also, a successful emulsification of dichloromethane (DCM) in the aqueous phase is developed by using thiolated polyethylene glycol (PEG-SH) as the stabilizer. Subsequently, the nanohybrids of PS/Au can be fabricated by templated electroless plating, and then selectively dissolving in the DCM dispersive phase. Most interestingly, a dedicated process for the simultaneous release of the tripod AuNPs from the dissolution of PS associated with PEG-SH at the interface of the emulsion is achieved, giving PEG-SH-functionalized tripod AuNPs dispersed in the aqueous phase, which significantly improves the suspension stabilization of tripod AuNPs. The in situ temperature-programmed electrospray-differential mobility analysis provides a quantitative, statistical analysis of mobility diameter, dynamic shape factor, polydispersity, and colloidal stability.

Exploring the ordering mechanism and dynamics of self-assembled block copolymer (BCP) thin films under confined conditions are highly essential in the application of BCP lithography. In this study, it is aimed to examine the self-assembling mechanism and kinetics of silicon-containing 3-arm star-block copolymer composed of polystyrene (PS) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) blocks as nanostructured thin films with perpendicular cylinders and controlled lateral ordering by directed self-assembly using topographically patterned substrates. The ordering process of the star-block copolymer within fabricated topographic patterns with PS-functionalized sidewall can be carried out through the type of secondary (i.e., heterogeneous) nucleation for microphase separation initiated from the edge and/or corner of the topographic patterns, and directed to grow as well-ordered hexagonally packed perpendicular cylinders. The growth rate for the confined microphase separation is highly dependent upon the dimension and also the geometric texture of the preformed pattern. Fast self-assembly for ordering of BCP thin film can be achieved by lowering the confinement dimension and also increasing the concern number of the preformed pattern, providing a new strategy for the design of BCP lithography from the integration of top-down and bottom-up approaches., (© 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report an aerosol-based approach to study the thermal stability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for gas-phase synthesis of MOF-based hybrid nanostructures used for highly active catalysis. Temperature-programmed electrospray-differential mobility analysis (TP-ES-DMA) provides the characterization of temperature-dependent morphological change directly in the gas phase, and the results are shown to be highly correlated with the structural thermal stability of MOFs determined by the traditional measurements of porosity and crystallinity. The results show that MOFs underwent thermal decomposition via simultaneous disassembly and deaggregation. Trimeric Cr-based MIL-88B-NH 2 exhibited a higher temperature of decomposition ( T d ), 350 °C, than trimeric Fe-based MIL-88B-NH 2 , 250 °C. For UiO-66, a significant decrease of T d by ≈100 °C was observed by using amine-functionalized ligands in the MOF structure. Copper oxide nanocrystals were successfully encapsulated in the UiO-66 crystal (Cu x O@UiO-66) by using a gas-phase evaporation-induced self-assembly approach followed by a suitable thermal treatment below T d (i.e., determined by TP-ES-DMA). Cu x O@UiO-66 demonstrated a very high catalytic activity and stability to CO oxidation, showing at least a 3-time increase in CO conversion compared to the bare CuO nanoparticle samples. The study demonstrates a prototype methodology (1) to determine structural thermal stability of MOFs using a gas-phase electrophoretic method (TP-ES-DMA) and (2) to gas-phase synthesize CuO nanocrystals encapsulated in MOFs.

In this study, a novel perovskite quantum dot (QD) spray-synthesis method is developed by combining traditional perovskite QD synthesis with the technique of spray pyrolysis. By utilizing this new technique, the synthesis of cubic-shaped perovskite QDs with a homogeneous size of 14 nm is demonstrated, which shows an unprecedented stable absolute photoluminescence quantum yield ≈100% in the solution and even in the solid-state neat film. The highly emissive thin films are integrated with light emission devices (LEDs) and organic light emission displays (OLEDs). The color conversion type QD-LED (ccQD-LED) hybrid devices exhibit an extremely saturated green emission, excellent external quantum efficiency of 28.1%, power efficiency of 121 lm W -1 , and extraordinary forward-direction luminescence of 8 500 000 cd m -2 . The conceptual ccQD-OLED hybrid display also successfully demonstrates high-definition still images and moving pictures with a 119% National Television System Committee 1931 color gamut and 123% Digital Cinema Initiatives-P3 color gamut. We demonstrate a new, facile gas-phase electrostatic approach to successfully quantify equivalent surface area of graphene oxide (GO) colloid on a number basis. Mobility diameter (d p,m )-based distribution and the corresponding equivalent surface area (SA) of GO colloids (i.e., with different lateral aspect ratios) were able to be identified by electrospray-differential mobility analysis (ES-DMA) coupled to a condensation particle counter (CPC) and an aerosol surface area analyzer (ASAA). A correlation of SA ∝ d p,m 2.0 was established using the ES-DMA-CPC/ASAA, which is consistent with the observation by the 2-dimensional image analysis of size-selected GOs. An ultrafast surface area measurement of GO colloid was achieved via a direct coupling of ES with a combination of ASAA and CPC (i.e., measurement time was 2 min per sample; without size classification). The measured equivalent surface area of GO was ∼202 ± 7 m 2 g -1 , which is comparable to Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, ∼240 ± 59 m 2 g -1 . The gas-phase electrostatic approach proposed in this study has the superior advantages of being fast, requiring no elaborate drying process, and requiring only a very small amount of sample (i.e., <0.01 mg). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of using an aerosol-based electrostatic coupling technique to obtain the equivalent surface area of graphene oxide on a number basis with a high precision of measurement.

Here, we show the induced chirality of an achiral chromophoric dye as a joint of polylactide-containing chiral block copolymers (BCPs*) driven by self-assembly, giving the achiral dyes preferentially arranged in a one-handed helical array at the microphase-separated interface. This helical arrangement of the achiral dyes can be "memorized" after hydrolysis of the polylactides in the BCPs* and serves as a chiral template for further chirality induction of different achiral dyes, probably through attractive aromatic π-π interactions at the interface, producing nanostructured chiral materials with tunable circular dichroism signals at desired wavelengths.

Herein, we aim to develop a facile method for the fabrication of mesoporous polystyrene (PS) films with controlled porosity and pore size by solvent annealing. A PS polymer film is solvent-annealed using N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) vapor for the development of phase separation, followed by rapidly cooling to the preset cryogenic temperature. Subsequently, a nonsolvent (methanol) is introduced to extract the crystalline DMF from the DMF-swollen PS, giving mesoporous PS with a network structure after the removal of DMF. The porosity of the mesoporous PS films can be controlled by the degree of swelling. Most interestingly, the phase separation between PS and DMF at the thin-film state under solvent annealing can be regulated by the annealing time through the spinodal decomposition, giving the development of nanonetwork structure with controlled structural features (i.e., framework size and interframework spacing) at invariant porosity. Consequently, after the removal of DMF, mesoporous PS films with controlled porosity and pore size can be obtained and then used as a template for the fabrication of a variety of nanoporous inorganics by templated syntheses, such as nanoporous SiO 2 , TiO 2 , and Ni, providing a cost-effective way to fabricate a range of nanoporous materials with controlled porosity and pore size as well as large specific surface area for aimed applications.

Herein, we aim to demonstrate the shape effect of a giant molecule on the self-assembly of supramolecules. A bent-core (BC) molecule was covalently linked to a disc-like hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC), giving a disc-bent core amphiphile. As a result, the induced hierarchical chirality driven by the shape effect on the forming columnar phase gives a two-dimensional nano-ribbon with spiral texture from double-stranded supracolumns.

The significance of chirality transfer is not only involved in biological systems, such as the origin of homochiral structures in life but also in man-made chemicals and materials. How the chiral bias transfers from molecular level (molecular chirality) to helical chain (conformational chirality) and then to helical superstructure or phase (hierarchical chirality) from self-assembly is vital for the chemical and biological processes in nature, such as communication, replication, and enzyme catalysis. In this Account, we summarize the methodologies for the examination of homochiral evolution at different length scales based on our recent studies with respect to the self-assembly of chiral polymers and chiral block copolymers (BCPs*). A helical (H*) phase to distinguish its P622 symmetry from that of normal hexagonally packed cylinder phase was discovered in the self-assembly of BCPs* due to the chirality effect on BCP self-assembly. Enantiomeric polylactide-containing BCPs*, polystyrene-b-poly(l-lactide) (PS-PLLA) and polystyrene-b-poly(d-lactide) (PS-PDLA), were synthesized for the examination of homochiral evolution. The optical activity (molecular chirality) of constituted chiral repeating unit in the chiral polylactide is detected by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) whereas the conformational chirality of helical polylactide chain can be explicitly determined by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). The H* phases of the self-assembled polylactide-containing BCPs* can be directly visualized by 3D transmission electron microscopy (3D TEM) technique at which the handedness (hierarchical chirality) of the helical nanostructure is thus determined. The results from the ECD, VCD, and 3D TEM for the investigated chirality at different length scales suggest the homochiral evolution in the self-assembly of the BCPs*. For chiral polylactides, twisted lamellae in crystalline banded spherulite can be formed by dense packing scheme and effective interactions upon helical chains from self-assembly. The handedness of the twisted lamella can be determined by using rotation experiment of polarized light microscopy (PLM). Similar to the self-assembly of BCPs*, the examined results suggest the homochiral evolution in the crystallized chiral polylactides. The results presented in this Account demonstrate the notable progress in the spectral and morphological determination for the examination of molecular, conformational, and hierarchical chirality in self-assembled twisted superstructures of chiral polymers and helical phases of block copolymers and suggest the attainability of homochiral evolution in the self-assembly of chiral homopolymers and BCPs*. The suggested methodologies for the understanding of the mechanisms of the chirality transfer at different length scales provide the approaches to give Supporting Information for disclosing the mysteries of the homochiral evolution from molecular level.

The chirality effect on the self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) composed of chiral entities, denoted as chiral BCPs (BCPs*), gives rise to the formation of the helical phase (H*) due to intermolecular chiral interactions. The corresponding twisting of self-assembled H* might be initiated from the microphase-separated chiral interface and/or attributed to chiral orientation-dependent segmental interactions. To examine the origins of the twisting mechanisms, a series of polylactide-containing BCPs* with different sequences and molecular weights of chiral block, poly(l-lactide) (PLLA), and achiral block, poly(d,l-lactide) (PLA), were designed for self-assembling. Accordingly, the impact of sequence and length of the blocks on self-assembled BCPs* can be scrutinized. For the ones with the PLLA as a middle block, polystyrene- b -poly(l-lactide)- b -poly(d,l-lactide), the formation of H* can be achieved even with a short PLLA segment. By contrast, the self-assembled morphology of polystyrene- b -poly(d,l-lactide)- b -poly(l-lactide) with the PLA as a middle block is dependent upon the length of the PLA block. On the basis of the self-assembled results, the chirality effect on the self-assembly of BCP* is originated from both the chiral interface and the chiral orientation-dependent segmental interactions. The present work on the study of the formation mechanisms of the H* thus provides insights into the intermolecular chiral interactions from the self-assembly of BCP*.

We report a systematic study of the controlled gas-phase synthesis of silver-silica hybrid nanostructures (Ag-SiO 2 NP) using the concept of evaporation-induced self-assembly. The approach includes the use of a direct gas-phase electrophoresis for size classification and in situ characterization of mobility size. Transmission electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy were employed complementarily to determine the morphology and surface plasmon resonance of Ag-SiO 2 NP. Results show that two types of Ag-SiO 2 NPs were successfully synthesized: (1) AgNPs decorated on a SiO 2 -NP (Ag-T-SiO 2 NP), and (2) AgNPs doped in a cluster of SiO 2 -NPs (Ag-C-SiO 2 NP). The physical size, morphology, and compositions of Ag-SiO 2 NPs were tunable through the adjustments of precursor concentrations and the selected mobility sizes. The results also show that SPR performance, colloidal stability, and dispersibility of AgNPs enhanced significantly in an aqueous environment after the hybridization with SiO 2 -NP (especially for Ag-C-SiO 2 NP). The results and corresponding methodology summarized here provide the proof of concept to fabricate high-purity AgNP-based hybrid nanostructures through gas-phase evaporation-induced self-assembly for future biomedical applications (e.g., hyperthermal therapy, targeted drug delivery, and antibacterial applications).

A quantitative study of the stability of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) conjugated with thiolated polyethylene glycol (SH-PEG) was conducted using gas-phase ion-mobility and mass analyses. The extents of aggregation and surface dissolution of AgNPs, as well as the amount of SH-PEG adsorption and desorption, were able to be characterized simultaneously for the kinetic study. The results show that the SH-PEG with a molecular mass of 6 kg/mol (SH-PEG6K) was able to adsorb to the surface of AgNP to form PEG6K-HS-AgNP conjugates, with the maximum surface adsorbate density of ∼0.10 nm(-2). The equilibrium binding constant for SH-PEG6K on AgNPs was calculated as ∼(4.4 ± 0.9) × 10(5) L/mol, suggesting a strong affinity due to thiol bonding to the AgNP surface. The formation of SH-PEG6K corona prevented PEG6K-HS-AgNP conjugates from aggregation under the acidic environment (pH 1.5), but dissolution of core AgNPs occurred following a first-order reaction. The rate constant of Ag dissolution from PEG6K-HS-AgNP was independent of the starting surface packing density of SH-PEG6K on AgNP (σ0), indicating that the interactions of H(+) with core AgNP were not interfered by the presence of SH-PEG6K corona. The surface packing density of SH-PEG6K decreased simultaneously following a first-order reaction, and the desorption rate constant of SH-PEG6K from the conjugates was proportional to σ0. Our work presents the first quantitative study to illustrate the complex mechanism that involves simultaneous aggregation and dissolution of core AgNPs in combination with adsorption and desorption of SH-PEG. This work also provides a prototype method of coupled experimental scheme to quantify the change of particle mass versus the corresponding surface density of functional molecular species on nanoparticles.
