The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has created unprecedented challenges worldwide. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes COVID-19 and has a complex interaction with the immune system, including growing evidence of sex-specific differences in the immune response. Sex-disaggregated analyses of epidemiological data indicate that males experience more severe symptoms and suffer higher mortality from COVID-19 than females. Many behavioural risk factors and biological factors may contribute to the different immune response. This review examines the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in the context of sex, with emphasis on potential biological mechanisms explaining differences in clinical outcomes. Understanding sex differences in the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection will help promote the development of specific strategies to manage the disease.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its associated symptoms, named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), have rapidly spread worldwide, resulting in the declaration of a pandemic. When several countries began enacting quarantine and lockdown policies, the pandemic as it is now known truly began. While most patients have minimal symptoms, approximately 20% of verified subjects are suffering from serious medical consequences. Co-existing diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and others, have been shown to make patients more vulnerable to severe outcomes from COVID-19 by modulating host-viral interactions and immune responses, causing severe infection and mortality. In this review, we outline the putative signaling pathways at the interface of COVID-19 and several diseases, emphasizing the clinical and molecular implications of concurring diseases in COVID-19 clinical outcomes. As evidence is limited on co-existing diseases and COVID-19, most findings are preliminary, and further research is required for optimal management of patients with comorbidities.

Background Methods Results Conclusions Poor respiratory function, including low peak expiratory flow (PEF), is a risk factor for dementia. Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is a predementia syndrome characterized by slow gait and subjective cognitive complaints. However, the association between PEF and MCR remains unclear. This study examined the cross‐sectional and longitudinal association between PEF and MCR.The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), which is a nationally representative cohort of adults ≥65 years of age in the United States, was analyzed from 2011 to 2017. Logistic regression and discrete‐time proportional hazards models tested the association of PEF standardized residuals (SR) at baseline with prevalent and incident MCR, respectively. The models adjusted for multiple sociodemographic and health‐related covariates.Among 5328 participants (57% women) included at baseline, lower PEF SR was associated with higher prevalence of MCR. Compared with the ≥80 PEF SR percentile group, the <30 and 30–50 percentile groups had significantly higher odds of prevalent MCR (OR 3.04 [95% CI 1.85, 5.01]; OR 2.06 [95% CI 1.19, 3.54], respectively). Over six years of follow‐up, lower PEF SR was also associated with higher incidence of MCR. Compared with the ≥80 PEF SR percentile group, the <30 and 30–50 percentile groups had significantly higher risk of incident MCR (HR 1.81 [95% CI 1.24, 2.66]; HR 1.55 [95% CI 1.02, 2.34], respectively).Lower PEF was associated with higher prevalence and incidence of MCR. Objective:A sense of "Well-being"is important to individuals' health, especially for those with mental and psychosocial challenges. Therefore, occupational therapists who are working in the psychiatric field always use different treatment modalities to promote individuals'well-being. Positive psychology(PP)and mindfulness have become two of those popular treatment modalities in recent years due to a growing amount of empirical evidences on their efficacies in promoting well-being of individuals. Participants'knowledge in PP and mindfulness, their participation in PP and mindfulness activities and the effect of the program on their well-being were explored.Methods:In a 4-month period, 25 patients who were diagnosed with mental and behavioral disorders according to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision of World Health Organization were recruited as program participants. PP activities included showing gratitude and appreciation, working on goals, sharing of positive stories and recording positive experiences. Mindfulness activities included mindful breathing, body scan and mindful eating. A"pre-test"vs."post-test'design was employed to investigate participants'knowledge on PP and mindfulness and their participation in these activities using a questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale. In atmospheric sensing, one application that has demonstrated several impressive successes over the last two decades is the light detection and ranging (LIDAR). Elastic LIDAR has shown an important capability in providing aerosol density and spatial distribution from a standoff position. However, it provides limited information on the material composition of the aerosol component. On the other hand, inelastic L1DARs (including laser-induced fluorescence and Raman LIDARs) measure the spectrally distributed returned signal that may contain important clues about the nature of the scatterers. In order to investigate the capability of these LIDARs in characterizing bioaerosols from a standoff position, Defence Research & Development Canada initiated a three-year program in spring 1999, named SINBAHD (Standoff Integrated Bioaerosol Active Hyperspectral Detection). The aim of the program was to investigate the sensitivity and discrimination capabilities of an inelastic LIDAR based on the intensified range-gated spectral detection of laser-induced fluorescence. An exploratory prototype based on this technique has shown sensitivity of a few living bioaerosol particles per liter of air for a range of 1.4 km at night. Furthermore, based on spectral signatures measured during open-air releases, good discrimination capabilities were obtained between Bacillius subtilis var globiggi (BG) and Erwinia herbicola (EH). These results agree well with a performance model using Raman returns from atmospheric nitrogen as a calibration tool.
