This contribution presents the recent research developments within the Cosmic Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) in the search for resolution of various scientific puzzles, ranging from fundamental physical questions to applications like the determination of earthquake precursors. The state-of-the art theoretical, numerical and computational aspects of these phenomena are addressed, as well as recent experimental developments for detection., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. In this contribution we study the possibility of the formation of cosmic ray ensembles (CRE) created by the interaction of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons with the magnetic field of the Sun. The lack of observation of those UHE and the difficulties for their identification given the current methodologies motivates this study. We performed simulations using the PRESHOWER program in order to simulate the expected extensive air showers which might be spatially correlated generated upon entering the Earth's atmosphere. We found characteristic features like very thing and extremely elongates cascades of secondary photons with their corresponding energies spanning the entire cosmic range spectrum. Shower footprints are as large as hundreds of kilometres. Samuil Kaplan (1921-1978) was a productive and famous astrophysicist. He was affiliated with a number of scientific centers in different cities of former Soviet Union. The earliest 13 years of his career, namely in the 1948-1961 years, he worked in Lviv University in Ukraine (then it was called the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic). In the present paper, the Lviv period of his life and scientific activity is described on the basis of archival materials and his published studies. Kaplan arrived in Lviv in June 1948, at the same month when he obtained the degree of Candidate of science. He was a head of the astrophysics sector at the Astronomical Observatory of the University, was a professor of department for theoretical physics as well as the founder and head of a station for optical observations of artificial satellites of Earth. He was active in the organization of the astronomical observational site outside of the city. During the years in Lviv, Kaplan wrote more than 80 articles and 3 monographs in 9 areas. The focus of his interests at that time was on stability of circular orbits in the Schwarzschild field, on white dwarf theory, on space gas dynamics, and cosmic plasma physics, and turbulence, on acceleration of cosmic rays, on physics of interstellar medium, on physics and evolution of stars, on cosmology and gravitation, and on optical observations of Earth artificial satellites. Some of his results are fundamental for development of theory in these fields as well as of observational techniques. The complete bibliography of his works published during the Lviv period is presented. Cosmic Ray Ensembles (CRE) are yet not observed groups of cosmic rays with a common primary interaction vertex or the same parent particle. One of the processes capable of initiating identifiable CRE is an interaction of an ultra-high energy (UHE) photon with the solar magnetic field which results in an electron pair production and the subsequent synchrotron radiation. The resultant electromagnetic cascade forms a very characteristic line-like front of a very small width ($\sim$ meters), stretching from tens of thousands to even many millions of kilometers. In this contribution we present the results of applying a toy model to simulate detections of such CRE at the ground level with an array of ideal detectors of different dimensions. The adopted approach allows us to assess the CRE detection feasibility for a specific configuration of a detector array. The process of initiation and propagation of an electromagnetic cascade originated from an UHE photon passing near the Sun, as well as the resultant particle distribution on ground, were simulated using the CORSIKA program with the PRESHOWER option, both modified accordingly. The studied scenario results in photons forming a cascade that extends even over tens of millions of kilometers when it arrives at the top of the Earth's atmosphere, and the photon energies span practically the whole cosmic ray energy spectrum. The topology of the signal consists of very extended CRE shapes, and the characteristic, very much elongated disk-shape of the particle distribution on ground illustrates the potential for identification of CRE of this type., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Muons and other ionizing radiation produced by cosmic rays and radiative decays affect CMOS/CCD sensor. When particles colliding with sensors atoms cause specific kind of noise on images recorded by cameras. We present a concept and preliminary implementation of method for recognizing those events and algorithms for image processing and their classification by machine learning. Our method consists of analyzing the shape of traces present in images recorded by a camera sensor and metadata related to an image like camera model, GPS location of camera, vertical and horizontal orientation of a camera sensor, timestamp of image acquisition, and other events recognized near-by sensors. The so created feature vectors are classified as either a muon-like event, an electron-like event or the other event, possibly noise. For muon-like events our method estimates azimuth of a muon track. Source of the data is database of CREDO (Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory) project and ESO (European Southern Observatory) archives. The telescope dark frames from ESO are analysed. The Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) uses the hunt for particle cascades from deep space as a vehicle for a unique "bottom-up" approach to scientific research. By engaging the non-specialist public of all ages as "citizen scientists" we create opportunities for lifelong learning for individuals as well as for cooperation and the sharing of common educational tools amongst institutions. The discoveries of these citizen scientists will feed directly into a pioneering new area of scientific research oriented on Cosmic Ray Ensembles (CRE). The detection (or non-detection) of such particle groups promises to open up a new method for exploring our universe, and a new channel on the multi-messenger stage, oriented on both astro- and geo-investigations. One of the main objectives of cosmic-ray studies are precise measurements of energy and chemical composition of particles with extreme energies. Large and sophisticated detectors are used to find events seen as showers starting in the Earth's atmosphere with recorded energies larger than 100 EeV. However, a Cosmic-Ray Ensemble (CRE) developing before reaching the Earth as a bunch of correlated particles may spread over larger areas and requires an extended set of detectors to be discovered. The Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) is a solution to find such phenomena. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are considered to be one of the most appropriate sources of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, $E \gtrsim 10^{18} \mathrm{~eV}$). Radiogalaxy Virgo A (M87) in the centre of a cluster of galaxies Virgo Cluster (VC) can be a prominent source of UHECRs. We investigate the possible contribution of Virgo A and the VC to the flux of events with trans-GZK energies - extremely high energy cosmic rays (EHECRs) - from the recent Auger and Telescope Array (TA) data sets ($E > 52 \mathrm{~EeV}$ and $E > 57 \mathrm{~EeV}$, respectively). We simulate EHECR propagation from Virgo A and the VC taking into account their deflections in galactic (GMF) and extragalactic (EGMF) magnetic fields and show that there is no excess of EHECR arrival directions from images of Virgo A/VC at different EHECR rigidities. By means of event-by-event analysis we recover the extragalactic arrival directions of EHECR events detected by Auger and TA for representative set of nuclei H(p), He, N, Si, Fe, and find evidences of enhanced fluxes of N-Si-Fe EHECRs from the Local Filament and Hot/Cold Spot regions. The Local Filament with its enhanced magnetic field is an expected contributor to the UHECR flux as the closest to the Earth last scattering centre, whereas Hot/Cold Spot region is a part of a larger arc-like spot, possibly created by diffusively spreading jet of UHECRs, accelerated in the relativistic jet of Virgo A during a prominent nuclear outburst about 10 - 12 Myr ago., Comment: This article has been accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS)

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are considered as one of the most appropriate sources of cosmic rays with energy exceeding $\sim 10^{18}$ eV. Virgo A (M87 or NGC 4486) is the second closest to the Milky Way active galaxy. According to existing estimations it can be a prominent source of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR). However not many events have been registered in the sky region near Virgo A, possibly due to magnetic field influence. In the present work we check UHECR events from the recent sets of data (AUGER, Telescope Array etc.) for possibility of their origination in this AGN. We carried out the simulation of UHECR motion from Virgo A taking into account their deflections in galactic (GMF) as well as extragalactic (EGMF) magnetic fields according to the several latest models. The maps of expected UHECR arrival directions were obtained as a result. It has been found the following: 1) UHECR deflection caused by EGMF is comparable with GMF one, moreover the influence of EGMF sometimes is dominating; 2) effect of EGMF demonstrates obvious asymmetry in the final distribution of expected UHECR arrival directions; 3) the results of simulations depend on chosen GMF model and are still open for the discussion., Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2015), The Hague, The Netherlands

We present a detailed analysis of the best-quality multi-wavelength data gathered for the large-scale jet in the core-dominated quasar 3C 273. We analyze all the archival observations of the target with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the far-ultraviolet observations with the Hubble Space Telescope, and the 8.4 GHz map obtained with the Very Large Array. In our study we focus on investigating the morphology of the outflow at different frequencies, and therefore we apply various techniques for the image deconvolution, paying particular attention to a precise modeling of the Chandra and Hubble point spread functions. We find that the prominent brightness enhancements in the X-ray and far-ultraviolet jet of 3C 273 - the "knots" - are not point-like, and can be resolved transversely as extended features with sizes of about $\simeq 0.5$ kpc. Also, the radio outflow is wider than the deconvolved X-ray/ultraviolet jet. We have also found circumstantial evidence that the intensity peaks of the X-ray knots are located systematically upstream of the corresponding radio intensity peaks, with the projected spatial offsets along the jet ranging from $\lesssim 0.2$ kpc up to $\simeq 1$ kpc. We discuss our findings in the wider context of multi-component models for the emission and structure of large-scale quasar jets, and speculate on the physical processes enabling an efficient acceleration of the emitting ultra-relativistic electrons along the entire jet length that exceeds 100 kpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Supernova remnants (SNRs) are widely considered to be sites of Galactic cosmic ray (CR) acceleration. Vela is one of the nearest Galactic composite SNRs to Earth accompanied by the Vela pulsar and its pulsar wind nebula (PWN) Vela X. The Vela SNR is one of the most studied remnants and it benefits from precise estimates of various physical parameters such as distance and age. Therefore, it is a perfect object for a detailed study of physical processes in SNRs. The Vela SNR expands into the highly inhomogeneous cloudy interstellar medium (ISM) and its dynamics is determined by the heating and evaporation of ISM clouds. It features an asymmetrical X-ray morphology which is explained by the expansion into two media with different densities. This could occur if the progenitor of the Vela SNR exploded close to the edge of the stellar wind bubble of the nearby Wolf-Rayet star $\gamma^2$Velorum and hence one part of the remnant expands into the bubble. The interaction of the ejecta and the main shock of the remnant with ISM clouds causes formation of secondary shocks at which additional particle acceleration takes place. This may lead to the close to uniform distribution of relativistic particles inside the remnant. We calculate the synchrotron radio emission within the framework of the new hydrodynamical model which assumes the supernova explosion at the edge of the stellar wind bubble. The propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays in Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields is investigated in the present paper. The motion of charged particles of different energies and chemical composition is simulated using different Galactic magnetic field models. Positions for the real sources of events registered at the Auger observatory are calculated taking into account the influence of both Galactic and extragalactic turbulent fields. We study the geometry and dynamics of the Vela complex including the Vela supernova remnant (SNR), the binary system gamma2 Velorum and the Gum nebula. We show that the Vela SNR belongs to a subclass of non-Sedov adiabatic remnants in a cloudy interstellar medium (ISM), the dynamics of which is determined by the heating and evaporation of ISM clouds. We explain observable characteristics of the Vela SNR with a SN explosion with energy 1.4 x 10^50 ergs near the step-like boundary of the ISM with low intercloud densities (~ 10^{-3} cm^{-3}) and with a volume-averaged density of clouds evaporated by shock in the north-east (NE) part about four times higher than the one in the south-west (SW) part. The observed asymmetry between the NE and SW parts of the Vela SNR could be explained by the presence of a stellar wind bubble (SWB) blown by the nearest-to-the Earth Wolf-Rayet (WR) star in the gamma2 Velorum system. We show that the size and kinematics of gamma2 Velorum SWB agree with predictions of numerical calculations for the evolution of the SWB of M_ini = 35M* star. The low initial mass of the WR star in gamma2 Velorum implies that the luminosity of the nuclear line of 26Al, produced by gamma2 Velorum, is below the sensitivity of existing gamma-ray telescopes., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A
