- Abstract
Publikace prostřednictvím uceleného souboru mezioborově pojatých statí dokumentuje inovace, které tzv. digitální obrat přináší do práce českých sociálněvědních a humanitních badatelů. Empiricky laděné kapitoly pak sledují jednotnou linii výkladu, v níž čtenářům nejprve představí jevy vymezené v tradiční oborové perspektivě a následně názorně předvedou uplatnění digitálních postupů, s jejichž pomocí lze zkoumanou oblast uchopit prostřednictvím počítačové analýzy. Kniha zůstává přístupná i pro čtenáře, kteří nemají předchozí znalosti programování a odborných digitálních aplikací, ale mají zájem seznámit se blíže se způsoby, jak zkoumat společnost a kulturu s využitím dat a počítačů.

Sociology has been described as a 'third culture' between science and literature. The distinctions between different orientations in sociological writing have been studied primarily through their non-textual manifestations (publication genres or venues, methodologies used, scientometric indicators, etc.). Our knowledge of how the science–literature boundary relates to the rhetorical composition of sociological texts therefore remains limited. We mixed a bespoke corpus of Czech sociological articles with a corpus of Czech short fiction to straightforwardly account for the relationship between sociology and literature. Unsupervised classification based on the distribution of most frequent verbs yielded two categories of sociological articles. Each cluster exhibited significant association with non-textual variables. Articles less similar to literature were associated with higher rates of co-authorship, citation counts, and number of women as first authors. Both clusters also displayed clear semantic differences. The signal from literary works increased variance in the textual feature space and subsequent pseudo-experimental validation confirmed its indispensability for the discovery of the association between the rhetorical pattern of verbs usage and non-textual variables related to sociological articles. CLARIN - Abstract
Tour de CLARIN is an initiative started by CLARIN ERIC in 2016 that has been periodically highlighting prominent user involvement activities of CLARIN national consortia in the form of blog posts published on the CLARIN webpage, disseminated through the CLARIN news flash and on social media. By focusing a different national consortium every two months and showcasing their outstanding language resources, text processing tools, user involvement events and researchers, we have been aiming to increase the visibility of the various consortia, reveal the richness of the CLARIN landscape, and display the full range of activities throughout the network that can not only inform and inspire other consortia, but also show what CLARIN has to offer to researchers, teachers, students, professionals and the general public interested in using and processing language data in various forms. In the two years we have been running the initiative, and having visited nearly half of all the CLARIN member countries, we can say that Tour de CLARIN has proved to be one of the flagship user involvement initiatives by CLARIN ERIC; highly valuable for our network and incredibly popular with our readers. This is why have decided to collect the blog posts in a printed volume. The first volume presents all the nine countries which we have visited so far: Finland, Sweden, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece and Lithuania.

THE SCREEN OF LAUGHTER AND REMEMBERING Collective Memory and Representations of State Socialism in Czech Cinematography This dissertation has very little to say about state socialism. Rather, it is a work about the memory of state socialism in the post-socialist Czech Republic, about the ways in which state socialism can be remembered in the present. From the perspective of collective memory, "it is not only the ancien regime that produced revolution, but in some respect the revolution produced the ancient regime, giving it a shape, a sense of closure" (Boym 2001, xvi). And there are indeed many, often conflicted modes of remembering this particular past. Françoise Mayer, for example, has identified several distinct types of remembering the "communism" in Czech society (Mayer, 2009). And her list is by no means exhaustive. At the centre of this treatise is the Czech post-socialist cinema. My dissertation thesis was prompted by the question of how cinematic representations bear on the collective memory of state socialism in the Czech Republic. . In the first chapter, I explore how cinema represents the past in comparison to historiography. In my work, it is evident that Czech cinema does not follow the epistemological criterion of referentiality that binds historians. A more important observation - and one...

- Abstract
The topic of this master's degree thesis - "Ideology of the Normalization, or the Normalization of Ideology: Narrative and Ideological Analysis of Films about Everyday Life during the 'Normalization'" - is an inquiry into the ideology of the so-called normalization period (1968-1989) as it is represented in mainstream Czech post-communist films. The research question is posed as follows: Do these films reflect on the ideology of the Normalization era itself, or are they normalizing a new post-communist ideology about the Normalization? SOCIAL media , *JOURNALISM , *ONLINE social networks , *PRESS - Abstract
This article examines the impact of social media on Czech news media content. The study relies on a content analysis of a six-month sample of news articles collected in 2013 and focuses on social networking sites (SNSs), namely Facebook and Twitter, in their capacity as acknowledged sources in the agenda of traditional news media in the Czech Republic. The results include information on the differences between tabloid and quality press, the topics and actors that are likely to be associated with social media in their capacity as sources, the links between social media sources and the geographical focus of the news, and the type of social media content that the news media are inclined to use. The main features of the utilization of SNSs as news sources in the Czech Republic can be characterized by low intensity, a preference for domestic affairs, and a bias toward tabloidization. In several examined categories, we found evidence of consistently disparate uses of Facebook and Twitter that caution against generalizations about the role of social media in journalism and signal the requirement for a more nuanced approach to individual platforms. The article concludes that Czech news media do not fully exploit the democratic potential of SNSs and favor elite sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POSTCOLONIALISM , *SOCIALISM , *POLITICAL science - Abstract
This essay examines theoretical arguments surrounding the use of post-colonial theory as a way to fill in the epistemological lacuna in the studies of post-socialism. It reviews the various streams of this theoretical development and employs Edward Said's notion of "traveling theory" to demonstrate that theoretical claims made by proponents and opponents of this particular comparative perspective are historically, socially, and geographically situated, although not fixed. Disciplinary, national, and institutional affiliations, instead of theoretical justifications, are identified as important factors in the propensity to accept or resist the introduction of post-colonial perspective on Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The essay concludes by acknowledging the potential usefulness as well as the limits of post-colonialism in the conceptualization of the postsocialist space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this work is to map fake Czech profiles on social network Facebook and Twitter. "Fake profiles" in this case mean those where authors are acting as a well-known person, company or institution. The authors mostly found these to entertain themselves and readers. They use satire, parody, and often sarcasm as well. The next section was included in order to bring a wider view of the issue. It is devoted to similar profiles abroad, which gives the possibility of comparison of the local and international environment. The thesis ends with a chapter devoted to the situations when the content of false profiles is used...

This thesis aims to describe and analyze the process of construction of otherness, use of humour and taste performance on Facebook page Divnolidi z Brna a okolí. Theoretical background explores contemporary approaches to the research of social network sites (particulary on privacy and sharing; a separate chapter is devoted to Facebook social network site), sociological term of taste as the instrument for social distinction (here, the study is primarily based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu), interdisciplinary concept of otherness (in which we examine works of Mary Douglas, Stuart Hall and Marc Augé) as well as theoretical approach to humour called theory of superiority. The conclusion shows that totalitarianism was represented mostly by its outer activities rather than ideology which were usually represented rather marginally. However, in all cases there could be found some examples of how was the representation of totalitarianism used to merge with system of control in games.

The thesis investigates the phenomenon of new media in Czech art institutions in the 1990s. This work attempts to show how this difficult-to-define concept operated in this particular historically and geographically situated language game (using a concept developed by Ludwig Wittgenstein). The new media at the time were associated with vision of emancipation from ideologically burdened traditional media and the establishment of a new democratic society based on the Western type. The thesis is based on three case studies in which new media art penetrated first into the educational institution, and later it got through to a private institution with foreign support for exhibition programmes and for the general public, and finally in the late 90s new media art reached also a governmental organization. It is the foundation of New Media Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, the Orbis Fictus exhibition organized by the Soros Centre for Contemporary Art, and the formation of the department of intermedia and new media at the National Gallery in Prague. Despite the fact that new media should be linked with the restoration of the country and society in the spirit of the Western model and its new vision, interactivity, use of new technologies and opposition to the traditional media had the media...

The diploma thesis "Death in media discourse: the case of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane" inquires into the case of the disappeared flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The flight has been mapped in Czech press as well as online newspapers from the perspective of death based on a subjectively composed qualitative method of grounded theory and discourse analysis. In the unprecedented tragical event, death is being constructed in a specific way in the context of media discourse. Hence, the allegoric character of epistemology and constructivist paradigm plays an important role here. The theoretic reflection describes the context of the relation between media and the topic of death. The abundance of topics in media associated with death is considered a symptom of a particular demand from society. The media increase the general tolerance towards images of death and violence, thus impacting character of such displays. In the reflection of the mental background, the character of perceiving death in a secularised society is denoted as metaphorical. In the research part of the thesis, discursive patterns are introduced. From them, we may understand what values associated with death are socially important and in what way does death appear and construct itself in the media. What is important here...

Aim of the thesis is to analyze the ability of media to provide a sense of ontological security to their users. Changes, related to the transformation of traditional society into a modern society caused in the opinion of Anthony Giddens a weakening of the sense of ontological security of individuals. Such an outcome was a result of the space-time distanciation and individuals opting out of social systems as an impact of some globalization processes. Mass media in the modern society work as a main factor of social integration and differentiation. The ability to construct the sense of ontological security among its recipients is attributing in the field of television studies attributed to the traditional medium, television. But some basic characteristics of television broadcast and the role of television in households have changed with a digital television transition. Employing the methods of qualitative sociological research I will analyze whether new media have the potential to substitute television in the role of providing the sense of ontological security among its users. This work is based on an assumption that human decision-making process is following several approximate rules (heuristics) that causes predictable and systematic errors in judgement (cognitive biases). Although this stand point is typical for fields like behavioural economics or behavioural law and economics, there is no reason to not apply this logic also on other discipline like a mass media communication studies. This work offers an analysis of the information market where supply side is represented by producers of information (e.g. media organizations) and demand side is represented by consumers of those information (audience). The analysis is focused on factors that cause perceived description of a particular event can vastly differ from this event. One of those cognitive biases which cause different perception of the same media content is called hostile media effect. In respect to this effect, sympathizers with a socially controversial topic tend to perceive information in the mass media as hostile to their own opinion. Previous research concluded that hostile perception is mainly caused by a reach of information which is explained by the selective categorization - although individuals with different worldview can see the same content, they perceive it with a different valence. The valence of the...

Important information sources are expert, non governance organization, states institutions in the environmental area. Experts and states institutions are primary defining. This research confirmed authority orientation of news. Journalists feel the autonomy in selection of topic, but I recorded pressures and controls from the media organizations. Journalists have a close relationship to nature and the environment, its protection is seen as important. Conservation lies in the modesty and sustainability.
