Prosjektleder Jannike Falk-Andersson The Norwegian Environment Agency (NEA) aims to strengthen environmental monitoring of macroplastic and litter pollution in Norway. Macroplastic and litter are items above 25 mm. Monitoring of litter in the Northern Fulmar is included (1-25 mm) as this is an established indicator representing biota. The other environmental compartments covered in this report are coastal waters, oceans, lakes, rivers, and terrestrial environments. This report identifies international obligations and national needs for knowledge on litter, reviews international harmonisation efforts for monitoring of litter and evaluates their technological readiness levels for implementation in monitoring programs. Data availability, on-going monitoring activities and initiatives that could contribute to collecting data on litter in Norway is mapped, and the cost of expanding existing monitoring is evaluated. Based on this mapping recommendations are given on how monitoring of macroplastic and litter could be strengthened in the future in Norway. Norwegian Environment Agency

Prosjektleder Cecilie Singdahl-Larsen Sedimentprøver, både overflateprøver fra det øverste laget (0-2 cm) av sedimentet og kjerneprøver (fra 0 til 30 cm), ble analysert for mikroplast på NIVA. Prøvene ble opparbeidet ved tetthetsseparasjon med natriumjodid (NaI, ρ=1,5-1,6 g/cm3) og behandlet med 10 % eddiksyre. Etter opparbeiding ble prøvene analysert med stereomikroskop for å bestemme lengde (μm), form (fiber, fragment, kule), og farge til mikroplastpartiklene. Deretter ble mikroplastpartiklene analysert med FTIR (Fourier-Transform infrarød spektrometri) for å bestemme polymertype. Resultatene er presentert i denne rapporten. Prosjektleder Bert van Bavel The Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet, NEA) tasked the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) to initiate Norway’s National microplastic monitoring program. The program “Microplastics in Norwegian coastal areas, rivers, lakes and air (MIKRONOR)”, was designed to target the multitude of environments in the Norwegian coastal, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. The primary aim is to provide information on levels and types of microplastics in aquatic environments as well as in air and build on the baseline data already generated for a number of these environments on previous assignments by NEA. This report contains the first results of coastal sites, open marine waters, lakes, rivers and air including high-volume water samples (freshwater and marine, n=48), Ferrybox samples (marine, n=20), blue mussels (marine, n=71), vertical plankton net samples (marine, n=29) and 24 air samples (precipitation n= 12 and active air sampling n = 12). We exposed the microbiome derived from two species of cod, from the outer and inner Oslo fjord to extracts derived from car tire rubber. To determine toxicity we look at growth rate and bacterial diversity as endpoints. We observed low effects overall, except for some significant changes to microbial diversity at some concentrations.
