Abstract

The aim of this report is to introduce an on-going, multicenter, randomized controlled trial to evaluate whether tailored antimicrobial prophylaxis guided by rectal culture screening prevents acute bacterial prostatitis following transrectal prostate biopsy (TRPB). Patients will be randomized into an intervention or non-intervention group; tazobactam-piperacillin or levofloxacin will be prophylactically administered according to the results of rectal culture prior to TRPB in the intervention group whereas levofloxacin will be routinely given in the non-intervention group. The primary endpoint is the occurrence rate of acute bacterial prostatitis after TRPB. Recruitment begins in April, 2021 and the target total sample size is 5,100 participants.

Abstract

Annual catches of Todarodes pacificus in Japan have gradually increased since the late 1980s. Paralarval abundances have also been higher since the late 1980s compared to the late 1970s and mid-1980s. Here is proposed a possible scenario for the recent stock increase based on changing environmental conditions. Based on trends in annual variations in stock and in larval abundances, catches are reviewed and potential spawning areas inferred, assuming that egg masses and hatchlings occur over the continental shelf at temperatures between 15 and 23°C. Changes are then inferred in the spawning areas during 1984–1995, based on GIS data. Since the late 1980s, the autumn and winter spawning areas in the Tsushima Strait and near the Goto Islands appear to have overlapped, and winter spawning sites seem to have expanded over the continental shelf and slope in the East China Sea. Abstract

Eking thyroid peroxidase (TPO), which was purified from the thyroid of patients with Graves' disease, we attempted to determine whether sera from patients with chronic thyroiditis Contained antibodies to the enzyme. When the binding was tested by ELISA. sera from patients with chronic thyroiditis revealed high binding activities to TPO. When TPO was incubated with IgG from sera followed by treatment with protein A-Sepharose and centrifugation. the remaining TPO activities in the supernatant fraction were lower in most of the patients, as compared to normal controls. Moreover. IgG purified by DEAE-cellulose chromatography from sera in patients interfered with the TPO activities, litres of anti-TPO antibodies correlated well with those of anti-microsome antibodies. These results indicate the presence of autoantibodies to TPO in sera of most patients with chronic thyroiditis and that TPO may be one component of microsome antigen complexes recognized by the autoantibodies. Studies on the inhibition of TPO by lgG isolated from sera of patients using guaiacol and iodide assays reseated that at least three epitopes of TPO molecule were recognized by autoantibodies and that the antigenic determinants on TP() molecule recognized by autoantibodies could be heterogeneous in patients. Abstract

We established a thyroglobutin (Tg)-specific, thyroiditis-inducing T-cell clone, B12G, from B6C3F1 mice by the immunization of mouse Tg with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Klebsiella strain LEN (O3:K1), B12G was Thy-1.2+, CD3+, CD4+, CD18+, and CD8-, and could transfer thyroiditis to recipient mice after in vitro stimulation with mouse or bovine Tg. Histological examination showed severe thyroiditis with predominant infiltrations of polymorphonuclear cells; few mononuclear cells were observed. B12G proliferated in response to bovine, mouse, porcine, and rat Tg in the presence of irradiated spleen cells, but did not respond to chicken or human Tg. H-2b, a low-responder haplotype of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis, governed the response of the clone to Tg. B12G produced interleukin-4 (IL-4) and IL-6, but not IL-2 or interferon-γ (IFN-γ), on stimulation with mouse Tg. These findings were different from characteristics of previously reported Tg-specific T-cell clones from high-responder mice in terms of epitope specificity and cytokine production pattern, raising the possibility that the specificities and functions of T cells involved in the development of autoimmune thyroiditis in low-responder mice differ from those in high responders. Abstract

We have previously found that a pyrazole derivative 1 possesses antibacterial activity and inhibitory activity against DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Here, we synthesized new pyrazole derivatives and found that 5-[(E)-2-(5-chloroindol-3-yl)vinyl]pyrazole 16 possesses potent antibacterial activity and selective inhibitory activity against bacterial topoisomerases. Many of the synthesized pyrazole derivatives were potent against clinically isolated quinolone- or coumarin-resistant Gram-positive strains and had minimal inhibitory concentration values against these strains equivalent to those against susceptible strains.
