1. Reforestation provides a foraging habitat for brown bears (Ursus arctos) by increasing cicada Lyristes bihamatus density in the Shiretoko World Heritage site

Abstract: Reforestation, which converts abandoned farmland back into forestland by planting woody species, can provide habitat for wildlife, including the brown bear (Ursus arctos Linnaeus, 1758). In the Shiretoko World Heritage site, northern Japan, where brown bears occur at high density, conifers have been planted since the 1970s to reforest abandoned farmland. In this area, brown bears were first observed digging for cicada Lyristes bihamatus Motschulsky, 1861 = Auritibicen bihamatus (Motschulsky, 1861) nymphs from 2000. Our preliminary observations suggested that the emergence of digging behavior might be associated with reforestation. We examined whether reforestation provided a foraging habitat for brown bears. We found that digging occurred only within the restored conifer forests, but not within the natural forest. The densities of cicada nymphs in the restored forests were higher than in the natural forest. These results indicate that the reforestation of abandoned farmland provides a foraging habitat for brown bears by increasing the availability of cicada nymphs in the Shiretoko World Heritage site. Nos observations preliminaires donnent a penser que l'emergence d'un comportement de creusage pourrait etre associee au reboisement. Nous avons tente d'etablir si le reboisement fournissait un habitat d'approvisionnement pour les ours bruns. Nous avons constate que les ours ne presentent un comportement de creusage que dans des forets de coniferes restaurees, mais pas dans la foret naturelle. Les densites de nymphes de cigale dans les forets restaurees sont plus elevees que dans la foret naturelle. Ces resultats indiquent que le reboisement de terres agricoles abandonnees fournit un habitat d'approvisionnement pour les ours bruns en rehaussant la disponibilite de nymphes de cigale dans le site du patrimoine mondial de Shiretoko. 2. Leaf level emission measurement of sesquiterpenes and oxygenated sesquiterpenes from desert shrubs and temperate forest trees using a liquid extraction technique

Abstract: Biogenic emission of sesquiterpene (SQT) and oxygenated SQT (OSQT) were measured from the dominant vegetation in a desert shrubland and urban area (Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A.), and at temperate forest sites at Niwot Ridge, Colorado, U.S.A., Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan and Tumbarumba, New South Wales, Australia. Additional measurements were conducted using greenhouse grown plants. The sampling technique, based on solid adsorbent preconcentration and liquid extraction, is suitable for measuring high molecular weight and low volatility compounds such as OSQTs. Fourteen SQT and OSQT (10 SQT and 4 OSQT) were identified in the field experiments. Total emission rates of SQTs and OSQTs varied from the detection limit to 7.6 μgC g-1h-1 (average: 0.74) and 3.7 μgC g-1h-1 (average: 0.31), respectively, and varied with plant species and location. Environmental conditions, including temperature and precipitation, appeared to influence emission rates. Canopy level emission of SQT and OSQT in Tomakomai were also estimated using an emission model. The emission rate of SQT and OSQT ranged from 72 to 710 μgC m-2h-1 (average, 460 in daytime) and from 38 to 370 μgC m-2h-1 (average, 240 in daytime), respectively. Their contributions can be very high in specific regions and seasons. Given the relatively high reactivity and secondary organic aerosol yields of SQTs and OSQTs, it is likely that these compounds influence atmospheric constituents in at least some areas. Abstract: Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12-month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1-3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8-10.6%, relative to current mass loss. Abstract: Object. Clotrimazole, an antimycotic drug, inhibits proliferation of normal and cancer cells by downregulating the movement of intracellular Ca++ and K+. The authors examined the effect of clotrimazole on the growth and sensitivity to cisplatin of two human glioblastoma cell lines—A172, which has the wild-type p53 gene, and T98G, which has the mutant p53 gene in vitro.Methods. The A172 and T98G glioblastoma cells were exposed to clotrimazole and cell growth was assessed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium chloride colorimetric assay. Clotrimazole produced a dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation and caused changes in cellular structure toward a well-differentiated form. The growth inhibitory effect of clotrimazole was reversible. Western immunoblot analysis revealed a marked increase in cellular glial fibrillary acidic protein and wild-type p53 and a decrease in c-myc and c-fos oncoproteins in both cell lines treated with clotrimazole. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that clotrimazole-treated cells accumulated in the G0/G1 phase with a marked decrease in cells in the S phase; when clotrimazole was washed out from the culture medium, cells again started to proliferate, with a marked decrease in cells in the G0/G1 phase and an increase in cells in the S phase. The growth inhibitory effect of clotrimazole could not be overcome by exogenous stimulation with either epidermal growth factor or c-myc peptide. A combined treatment with clotrimazole and cisplatin significantly enhanced cell cytotoxicity compared with treatment using either drug alone. A DNA fragmentation assay showed that both clotrimazole and cisplatin induced apoptosis, which was increased in cells treated by both drugs.Conclusions. The present study indicates that clotrimazole inhibits cell proliferation accompanied by morphological changes toward differentiation of glioblastoma cells and that this drug synergistically enhances the antitumor effect of cisplatin by inducing wild-type p53—mediated apoptosis.

Abstract: Reactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are known to affect atmospheric chemistry, especially biogenic VOCs (BVOCs) which have a significant impact on regional air quality due to their large emission rates and high reactivities. Diterpenes (Kaur-16-ene and a diterpene likely to be Hibaene) were detected in all of the 205 enclosure air samples collected over multiple seasons at two different sites from Cryptomeria japonica and Chamaecyparis obtusa trees, the dominant coniferous trees in Japan. The emission rate of Kaur-16-ene, was determined to be from 0.01 to 7.1 µg dwg-1 h-1 (average: 0.61 µg dwg-1 h-1) by branch enclosure measurements and solid phase -- liquid extraction techniques. The emission rate was an order of magnitude higher than that of monoterpenes which are known to comprise a major portion of total BVOC emissions. In addition, total emission of Kaur-16-ene at 30 °C was estimated to be comparable to that of total anthropogenic VOC emissions. Abstract: The growth and survival of coniferous trees (particularly Abies sachalinensis) and broad-leaved trees (particularly Quercus crispula) were followed over a 15-yr period in a 15.5-ha area in a northern mixed forest in Japan, and the coexistence of the two groups was simulated by a density-dependent projection matrix model. The density-dependentmodel assumes that the density effect of mother trees due to one-sided competition for light on smaller-sized tree regulates the demographic functions. The mother tree densities of conifers and broad-leavedtrees have stronger negative effects on the recruitment and survivalof seedlings of their own group than of the other group. These results support the idea of reciprocal replacement for conifer and broad-leaved trees. Simulations using the density-dependent model showed that the two groups will co-exist within a particular range of recruitment rates. However, the density of both groups did not affect the growth rate of any tree, and equilibrium DBH-distributions from density-dependent matrices were quite different from present distributions both for conifers and broadleaved trees. On the other hand, equilibrium DBH-distributions of conifer and broad-leaved trees from density-independent matrices were quite distinct from each other, reflecting different survivorship curves of the two dominants. Abstract: It is difficult to make a direct measure of seed dispersal patterns from individual trees in forests that are poor in species richness due to overlapping dispersal distances. We estimated the 'seed shadows'of three species in a mixed forest in northern Japan by measuring seed densities at various points during three dispersal seasons. We also measured the distance from each sampling point to surrounding mother trees, diameter at breast height of the mother trees, and the direction from each point to the mother trees. We assumed that the relationship between seed number, at a distance in all directions around a mother tree, and the distance followed a log-normal distribution in the case that wind blew equally in all directions. We estimated seed density from multiple mother trees at a given point using the above relationship and an allometric relationships between seed production anddiameter at breast height of the mother trees. We then predicted theseed shadow as the log-normal curve that best explained the spatial variance in observed seed densities. The estimate was improved when wind direction was included for wind dispersed species such as Betula ermanii and Abies sachalinensis because of the existence of a prevailing wind direction. However, the estimate became worse for seeds not adapted to wind dispersal such as Quercus mongolica var. grosseserrata. The median of dispersal distance was negatively correlated to the seed weight among the three species. We conclude that the estimation of seed shadow from multi-located mother trees is possible by using the distance to mother trees, diameter at breast height of the trees, and wind direction data. Abstract: Este artículo contiene 18 páginas, 5 tablas, 4 figuras., Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12- month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1– 3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8–10.6%, relative to current mass loss.In contrast, expected changes in atmospheric N deposition will decrease the mid-term mass loss of high-quality litter by 1.4–2.2% and that of low-quality litter by 0.9–1.5% in the temperate biome. Our results suggest that projected increases in N deposition may have the capacity to dampen the climate-driven increases in litter decomposition depending on the biome and decomposition stage of substrate., This work was performed within the TeaComposition initiative, carried out by 190 institutions worldwide. Abstract: Through litter decomposition enormous amounts of carbon is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous large-scale decomposition experiments have been conducted focusing on this fundamental soil process in order to understand the controls on the terrestrial carbon transfer to the atmosphere. However, previous studies were mostly based on site-specific litter and methodologies, adding major uncertainty to syntheses, comparisons and meta-analyses across different experiments and sites. In the TeaComposition initiative, the potential litter decomposition is investigated by using standardized substrates (Rooibos and Green tea) for comparison of litter mass loss at 336 sites (ranging from -9 to +26 °C MAT and from 60 to 3113 mm MAP) across different ecosystems. In this study we tested the effect of climate (temperature and moisture), litter type and land-use on early stage decomposition (3 months) across nine biomes. We show that litter quality was the predominant controlling factor in early stage litter decomposition, which explained about 65% of the variability in litter decomposition at a global scale. 45. Brown bear digging decreases tree growth: Implication for ecological role of top predators in anthropogenic landscapes.

Abstract: Large carnivores have recently increased in number and recolonized in human-dominated landscapes; however, their ecological roles in these landscapes have not been well studied. In the Shiretoko World Heritage (SWH) site, brown bears have recolonized a previously abandoned mosaic landscape of natural forests and conifer plantations after land abandonment. We previously reported that the bears had recently begun to dig for cicada nymphs in association with the creation of larch plantations. As a result, this digging activity decreased soil nutrients. To deepen the understanding of the novel ecological role of brown bears within human-modified landscapes, we examined the impacts of brown bear digging on the growth of larch trees. We found that brown bear digging decreased fine root biomass of larch, soil water, and nitrogen availability. Brown bear digging negatively affected needle nitrogen content, but not carbon isotope ratios, a water stress index of trees. Tree ring data suggest that digging negatively affected the radial growth of larches. The results imply that digging decreases tree growth due to limited soil nitrogen uptake. 46. Conferring High IAA Productivity on Low-IAA-Producing Organisms with PonAAS2, an Aromatic Aldehyde Synthase of a Galling Sawfly, and Identification of Its Inhibitor.

Abstract: Gall-inducing insects often contain high concentrations of phytohormones, such as auxin and cytokinin, which are suggested to be involved in gall induction, but no conclusive evidence has yet been obtained. There are two possible approaches to investigating the importance of phytohormones in gall induction: demonstrating either that high phytohormone productivity can induce gall-inducing ability in non-gall-inducing insects or that the gall-inducing ability is inhibited when phytohormone productivity in galling insects is suppressed. In this study, we show that the overexpression of PonAAS2 , which encodes an aromatic aldehyde synthase (AAS) responsible for the rate-limiting step in indoleacetic acid (IAA) biosynthesis in a galling sawfly ( Pontania sp.) that contains high levels of endogenous IAA, conferred high IAA productivity on Caenorhabditis elegans , as the model system. This result strongly suggests that PonAAS2 can also confer high IAA productivity on low-IAA-producing insects. We also successfully identified an inhibitor of PonAAS2 in a chemical library. This highly selective inhibitor showed stronger inhibitory activity against AAS than against aromatic amino acid decarboxylase, which belongs to the same superfamily as AAS. We also confirm that this inhibitor clearly inhibited IAA productivity in the high-IAA-producing C. elegans engineered here.

47. Contribution of tree community structure to forest productivity across a thermal gradient in eastern Asia.

Abstract: Despite their fundamental importance the links between forest productivity, diversity and climate remain contentious. We consider whether variation in productivity across climates reflects adjustment among tree species and individuals, or changes in tree community structure. We analysed data from 60 plots of humid old-growth forests spanning mean annual temperatures (MAT) from 2.0 to 26.6 °C. Comparing forests at equivalent aboveground biomass (160 Mg C ha -1 ), tropical forests ≥24 °C MAT averaged more than double the aboveground woody productivity of forests <12 °C (3.7 ± 0.3 versus 1.6 ± 0.1 Mg C ha -1 yr -1 ). Nonetheless, species with similar standing biomass and maximum stature had similar productivity across plots regardless of temperature. We find that differences in the relative contribution of smaller- and larger-biomass species explained 86% of the observed productivity differences. Species-rich tropical forests are more productive than other forests due to the high relative productivity of many short-stature, small-biomass species., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

48. Vertical and horizontal light heterogeneity along gradients of secondary succession in cool- and warm-temperate forests.

Abstract: Aims: Light availability varies drastically in forests, both vertically and horizontally. Vertical light heterogeneity (i.e., patterns of light attenuation from the forest canopy to the floor) may be related to light competition among trees, while horizontal light heterogeneity (i.e., variations in light intensity at a given height within forests) may be associated with light-niche partitioning among tree species. However, light heterogeneity in vertical and horizontal directions and their associations with forest structure are rarely studied to date. Here we report the first comprehensive study to compare the vertical and horizontal light heterogeneity in differently aged forests in two forest types., Location: Twelve forest stands of different ages in cool-temperate forests (consisting of deciduous broad-leaved trees) and five of different ages in warm-temperate forests (evergreen conifer and deciduous broad-leaved trees) in Japan., Methods: We measured vertical light profiles at 1-m intervals from the understorey (1 m above the ground) to the top canopy (12-22 m depending on stands) at 16 locations for each stand (20 m × 20 m). We also measured structural parameters (diameter at breast height, height, and crown dimensions) for all major trees in these stands., Results: Along the secondary successional gradients, the vertical and horizontal light heterogeneity changed in a systematic manner in both forests. The vertical light attenuation rate was steeper in early succession and more gradual in late succession, and the horizontal light heterogeneity was relatively small in early succession and more pronounced in late succession. The vertical light attenuation rate was different between the two forest types; the light intensity dropped more sharply from the canopy surface in the cool-temperate forests due to the crown being vertically shorter and denser (i.e., higher leaf density per unit volume)., Conclusion: In early succession, a steeper light attenuation rate is likely related to the strong light competition among co-occurring trees and thus a self-thinning process. In late succession, the high spatial light heterogeneity in forests (i.e., larger horizontal light heterogeneity and gradual light attenuation rate) may allow more species to partition light, and thus may enhance species coexistence and diversity., (© 2022 The Authors. 49. Effective distance of volatile cues for plant-plant communication in beech.

Abstract: In response to volatiles emitted from a plant infested by herbivorous arthropods, neighboring undamaged conspecific plants become better defended against herbivores; this is referred to as plant‒plant communication. Although plant‒plant communication occurs in a wide range of plant species, most studies have focused on herbaceous plants. Here, we investigated plant‒plant communication in beech trees in two experimental plantations in 2018 and one plantation in 2019. Approximately 20% of the leaves of a beech tree were clipped in half in the spring seasons of 2018 and 2019 (clipped tree). The damage levels to leaves in the surrounding undamaged beech trees were evaluated 90 days after the clipping (assay trees). In both years, the damage levels decreased with a reduction in the distance from the clipped tree. In 2019, we also recorded the damage levels of trees that were not exposed to volatiles (nonexposed trees) as control trees and found that those that were located <5 m away from clipped trees had significantly less leaf damage than nonexposed trees. By using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer, ten and eight volatile compounds were detected in the headspaces of clipped and unclipped leaves, respectively. Among them, the amount of ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate in clipped leaves was significantly higher than that in nonclipped leaves. Our result suggests that green leaf volatiles such as ( Z )-3-hexenol and ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate and other volatile organic compounds emitted from clipped trees induced defenses in the neighboring trees within the 5 m radius. 50. Diversification of terpenoid emissions proposes a geographic structure based on climate and pathogen composition in Japanese cedar.

Abstract: Biogenic volatile organic compounds emitted from plants are important constituents of atmospheric chemistry and play a major role in the resistance of plants against various environmental stresses. However, little is known about how abiotic and biotic environments on a geographic scale relate to diversifications of the emission. Here, we present variations of terpenes stored in and emitted from leaves of a single species in a common garden, using genetically differentiated local populations of Japanese cedar, the most dominant and widely distributed tree species in Japan. Furthermore, we determined the composition of fungal communities in 50 locations, based on the presence or absence of 158 fungal species inhabiting the cedar. The results showed that terpenoids, especially those that are emitted, were highly diversified and geographically structured among the 12 populations. The total amount of stored terpenes was negatively affected by warm and less-snow climates. On the other hand, variations in some emitted terpenoid species among the populations were correlated to antagonistic fungal species inhabiting the Japanese cedar. We propose that the diversification of composition and amount of stored and emitted terpenoids in the tree species is not only structured by climate, but also antagonistic fungal communities through biological interactions.
