Spectro-ptychography offers improved spatial resolution and additional phase spectral information relative to that provided by scanning transmission X-ray microscopes (STXM). However, carrying out ptychography at the lower range of soft X-ray energies (e.g., below 200 eV to 600 eV) on samples with weakly scattering signals can be challenging. We present soft X-ray ptychography results at energies as low as 180 eV and illustrate the capabilities with results from permalloy nanorods (Fe 2p), carbon nanotubes (C 1s), and boron nitride bamboo nanostructures (B 1s, N1s). We describe optimization of low energy X-ray spectro-ptychography and discuss important challenges associated with measurement approaches, reconstruction algorithms, and their effects on the reconstructed images. A cryo scanning transmission X-ray microscope, the cryo-STXM, has been designed and commissioned at the Canadian Light Source synchrotron. The instrument is designed to operate from 100 - 4000 eV (lambda = 12.4 - 0.31 nm). Users can insert a previously frozen sample, through a load lock, and rotate it plus minus 70 degrees in the beam to collect tomographic data sets. The sample can be maintained for extended periods at 92 K primarily to suppress radiation damage, and a pressure on the order of 10-9 Torr to suppress sample contamination. The achieved spatial resolution (30 nm) and spectral resolution (0.1 eV) are similar to other current soft X-ray STXMs, as demonstrated by measurements on known samples and test patterns. The data acquisition efficiency is significantly more favorable for both imaging and tomography. 2D images, 3D tomograms and 4D chemical maps of automotive hydrogen fuel cell thin sections are presented to demonstrate current performance and new capabilities, namely cryo-spectrotomography in the soft X-ray region., Comment: 56 pages

Reduction in metal-oxide thin films has been suggested as the key mechanism responsible for forming conductive nanofilaments within solid-state memory devices, enabling their resistive switching capacity. The quantitative spatial identification of such filaments is a daunting task, particularly for metal-oxides capable of exhibiting multiple phases as in the case of TiOx. Here, we spatially resolve and chemically characterize distinct TiOx phases in localized regions of a TiOx-based memristive device by combining full-field transmission X-ray microscopy with soft X-ray spectroscopic analysis that is performed on lamella samples. We particularly show that electrically pre-switched devices in low-resistive states comprise reduced disordered phases with O/Ti ratios close to Ti2O3 stoichiometry that aggregate in a ~ 100 nm filamentary region electrically conducting the top and bottom electrodes of the devices. We have also identified crystalline rutile and orthorhombic-like TiO2 phases in the region adjacent to the filament, suggesting that the temperature increases locally up to 1000 K, validating the role of Joule heating in resistive switching. Contrary to previous studies, our approach enables to simultaneously investigate morphological and chemical changes in a quantitative manner without incurring difficulties imposed by interpretation of electron diffraction patterns acquired via conventional electron microscopy techniques., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures

The glassy behavior observed in the pyrochlore magnet Y2Mo2O7, where the magnetic Mo^{4+} ions interact predominantly via isotropic nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange, possibly with additional weak disorder, is a distinct class of spin glass systems where frustration is mostly geometrical. A model proposed to describe such a spin glass behavior is the Heisenberg model on a pyrochlore lattice with random but strictly antiferromagnetic exchange disorder. In this paper, we provide compelling numerical evidence from extensive Monte Carlo simulations which show that the model exhibits a finite temperature spin glass transition and thus is a realization of a spin glass induced by random weak disorder from spin liquid. From our results, we are led to suggest that the spin glass state of Y2Mo2O7 is driven by effective strong disorder., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory is suffering a gradual loss of low energy sensitivity due to a buildup of a contaminant. High resolution spectra of bright astrophysical sources using the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) have been analyzed in order to determine the nature of the contaminant by measuring the absorption edges. The dominant element in the contaminant is carbon. Edges due to oxygen and fluorine are also detectable. Excluding H, we find that C, O, and F comprise >80%, 7%, and 7% of the contaminant by number, respectively. Nitrogen is less than 3% of the contaminant. We will assess various candidates for the contaminating material and investigate the growth of the layer with time.
