Abstract

This open access book explores the history of pellagra, a vitamin deficiency disease brought about by a shift in agriculture to maize, and which was first identified in Italy in the 1760s. With a focus on the insanity that was caused by the disease, the authors examine how thousands of patients were treated in Italian psychiatric asylums, shedding light on the sufferer’s point of view. Setting pellagrous insanity in a wider context of man-made or societal (anthropogenic) disease, where poverty, diet and disease meet, the book contributes to the history of medicine and science, the history of psychiatry, economic and social history, agrarian history, and food and nutrition history. Additionally, the authors aim to transnationalise Italian history by making comparisons with related issues, such as tertiary syphilis in the UK. Drawing from a wide range of printed and archival sources, including the writings of Italian medical investigators, the book examines how medical and scientific research was carried out during the long nineteenth century and the uncertainties that this engendered, in terms of classification, explanation, diagnosis and treatment. Offering a unique perspective on an endemic illness which came to be known as the disease of the four ds: dermatitis; diarrhea; dementia; and death, this book provides an engaging account of one of the most perplexing causes of mental illness.

Abstract

Background: The historical context, in which the acceptance and rejection of diversity have been constructed, is often overlooked by the medical literature. However, the evolution of science is strongly based in the past in many cases and especially when talking about psychiatry. Objective: The purpose of this study is to present the historical knowledge that psychiatry has followed for its formation into current science. In particular, it seeks information from the ancient years and the Byzantine period until modern years in Greece. Methodology: The historical research has been followed by using primary, secondary and tertiary sources. Historically approached studies from both medical and social sciences were also collected. Results – Conclusions: The results show that the process of understanding the human soul has gone through various stages and has become a matter of research by medical, religious and social sciences. Moreover, psychiatry can be a fertile field to offer theories of understanding diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Diplomsko delo vsebuje kratek pregled zgodovine duševnega zdravja iz socialnega vidika, ki predstavlja temelj za nadaljnje razmišljanje o duševnem zdravju na različnih območjih. Temu sledi primerjava duševnega zdravja skozi različna zgodovinska obdobja v Aziji, Ameriki, Evropi in nenazadnje tudi Sloveniji. Ker se je v povezavi z duševnim zdravjem kot zelo uspešna metoda, ki proučuje človeka in njegovo celotno okolje, izkazala fenomenologija, se to diplomsko delo dotakne tudi tega področja. Pomemben del tega dela pa prestavlja tudi stigmatizacija ljudi s težavami v duševnem zdravju, saj so ljudje, ki se poslužujejo raznih storitev iz področja duševnega zdravja s strani okolice še vedno odrinjeni na rob družbe, kar jim onemogoča prosto vključevanje v širšo družbo, ravno tako pa vsebuje razmišljanje o nalepki duševne bolezni. Celotnemu diplomskemu delu pa temelj predstavlja duševno zdravje, ki ga opredelim z medicinskega (tradicionalnega), fenomenološkega, pravnega in socialnega (konstruktivističnega) vidika, ter potrebe uporabnikov socialno-varstvenih storitev s področja duševnega zdravja. Prvotni namen tega diplomskega dela je bilo ugotoviti kakšno je splošno razumevanje prebivalcev Ribniško-Kočevskega območja o področju duševnega zdravja, ter ali je na omenjenem območju ponudba storitev iz področja duševnega zdravja sorazmerna z dejanskimi potrebami prebivalcev. Analizo intervjujev sem opravila na podlagi raziskovalnih vprašanj, ki sem jih razdelila na različne sklope, kot so: splošno razumevanje duševnega zdravja, storitve s področja duševnega zdravja na Ribniško-Kočevskem območju, potrebe, socialna mreža ter izkušnje z institucionalno obravnavo. Po končani analizi lahko trdim, da trenutne potrebe prebivalstva zagotovo presegajo trenutno dano ponudbo s področja duševnega zdravja, ter da ima večino oseb za sabo vsaj eno negativno izkušnjo z institucijami oziroma z institucionalno obravnavo. Izpostavila bom pomanjkanje storitev s področja duševnega zdravja na tem območju, saj se število ljudi s težavami v duševnem zdravju iz dneva v dan povečuje, dane storitve pa na tem območju ostajajo enake. The Graduation Thesis provides a brief overview of the history of mental health from a social point of view, which forms the basis for further thinking about mental health in different areas. This is followed by a comparison of mental health across different historical periods in Asia, America, Europe and, last but not least, in Slovenia. Since phenomenology has proved in connection with mental health as a very successful method, that studies the human being and his entire environment, this thesis deals with this field as well. An important part of this work is also the stigmatization of people with mental health problems, since people who use various services in the field of mental health, are still pushed to the edge of the society form the surroundings, which prevents them from being freely included in the wider society, it also contains thoughts about a mental illness label. The basis for the entire thesis represents mental health, which I define from the medical (traditional), phenomenological, legal and social (constructivist) point of view, and the needs of the users of social and mental services. The original purpose of this thesis was to determine the general understanding of the inhabitants of the Ribnica and Kočevje in the area of mental health, and whether the offer of services in the field of mental health is proportional to the actual needs of the population. I analyzed the interviews on the basis of research questions that I divided into different sections, such as: general understanding of mental health, mental health services in region of Ribnica and Kočevje, needs, social network and experience with instituional treatment. After completing the analysis, I can say that the current needs of the population certainly exceed the currently offered mental health services, and that most people have at least one negative experience with institutions or with institutional treatment. I will higlight the lack of mental health services in the pre-mentioned area, as the number of people with mental health problems increases day by day, while the services provided in this area remain the same.

7. La formación de “enfermeros psiquiátricos” durante la posguerra española: a propósito de Jaén (1939-1955)

Abstract

The history of mental health nurses has hardly been attempted in Spain. During Second Spanish Republic different regulations tried to organize nurses and attendants in psychiatric institutions. Several reforms, in this period, included new legal regulations, training courses for attendants and the publication of the first professional manuals for mental health nurses. Spanish Civil War interrupted this emerging new model of psychiatric care, despite some initiative survived. The aim of this paper is to study the psychiatric nursing training developed in Jaén Psychiatric Hospital in the aftermath of war. Despite the devastated health system, high rates of mortality and overcrowded institutions the psychiatrists organized asylum workers in Jaén. The “cursillos de capacitación psiquiátrica (courses for training in psychiatric care)” tried to teach, selected and provide a range of skills and vocational training, because the Franco´s sanitary administration neglect mental nursing care., En España se ha prestado escasa atención a la historia de los cuidadores de los enfermos mentales. Durante la Segunda República, en el contexto de las reformas psiquiátricas implantadas, se organizó el personal sanitario de las instituciones psiquiátricas, se legisló la obtención del titulo de “enfermero psiquiátrico”, se impartieron cursos para formación de cuidadores y se publicaron los primeros manuales para la instrucción de practicantes y enfermeros psiquiátricos. La irrupción de la guerra interrumpió estos nuevos planteamientos en el modelo de atención al enfermo mental, aunque alguna iniciativa formativa pervivió.El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar la formación de los cuidadores psiquiátricos desarrollado en el Establecimiento Psiquiátrico Provincial de Jaén en la posguerra. A pesar del devastado sistema de salud, las elevadas tasas de mortalidad y la saturación de las instituciones, en Jaén los psiquiatras organizaron al personal subalterno. Los “Cursillos de capacitación psiquiátrica” celebrados en dicha institución trataron de formar, seleccionar y entrenar a los enfermeros, ante la falta de implicación de la administración sanitaria del gobierno franquista en la formación de los cuidadores de los enfermos mentales.
