Abstract

Though Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492) is one of the most well-studied Florentine figures in history, previous studies have almost exclusively focused on his political life and his contributions as an art patron. Few historians have given time to his emotional life, his relationships with the members of his household, or the ways in which he understood himself as a Medici man. The neglect of this crucial facet of the human experience fails to challenge previous understandings of Lorenzo's life. This thesis is meant to be a corrective to earlier work in Laurentian history. I approach Lorenzo's life from a standpoint which incorporates the methodologies of emotions history, gender history, household history, and the history of sexuality. By making a close study of a variety of sources, including letters, poetry, and artwork, I will seek to create a new portrait of Lorenzo which explores his internal life. This, I believe, will give greater context to the decisions and behaviours which shaped his political and artistic career. Additionally, by exploring Lorenzo's inner life, we will come to a deeper understanding of the ways in which masculinity, sexuality, and household relationships shaped the lives of Florentine men.

2. Marriage and brotherhood in Muscovite Russia

Abstract

In Russia today, conservative views about gender are often promoted through reference to the past, to show that supposedly ‘traditional’ gender roles are intrinsic to Russian history. Frequently, this idea is upheld in scholarship. My work explores the historicity of commonly held assumptions about gender. This dissertation focusses on gender and sexuality in Russia from the sixteenth to early eighteenth centuries. It shows that ideas about what constituted a virtuous marriage were established by reference to ideas about brotherhood. Brotherhood here refers not to biological siblings, but to a church rite of ‘spiritual brotherhood’ known in Russian as bratotvorenie. This rite has not been studied in any depth before. Based on archival work, this dissertation offers a detailed account of the tradition in Russia until its ban in 1650, when it was prohibited by leading ecclesiastical figures for being too like marriage. One churchman complained: ‘The priest, joining together these two men, unites them in matrimony’. The dissertation shows that bratotvorenie was conceived of in premodern Russia as a form of same-sex union, and that it was through banning this tradition that churchmen came to express in a coherent way which kinds of partnership were legitimate and why. The first chapter challenges the idea that marriage was always a monogamous union between a man and a woman for the creation of children, an idea that is often encountered in academic literature on Russian marriage history. It shows that the church rite of marriage was edited in Russia during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when ideas about the sacramental nature of marriage changed. The second chapter builds on these observations, suggesting that marriage and ‘spiritual brotherhood’ were understood as analogous in the premodern period. The final two chapters look at depictions of marriage and brotherhood in hagiography and iconography respectively. They focus on Petr and Fevroniia, the first married couple to be canonised in Russia in 1547. In 2008, their feast day was reworked into a state festival called the ‘Day of Family, Love and Fidelity’, now widely celebrated across Russia. Petr and Fevroniia have been cast as the patron saints of so-called ‘traditional moral-spiritual values’. This view is generally upheld in existent scholarship on the saints. This dissertation responds to the way the saints are being represented today, arguing that they were initially venerated for subverting normative ideas about gender and sexuality—that they were queer. What is more, their veneration paralleled the veneration of holy brothers. Their hagiography seems to have been based on the Life of a monastic brotherhood, and icons depicting Petr and Fevroniia standardly showed them in monastic robes. Focussing on marriage and brotherhood in premodern Russia, each chapter of this dissertation challenges a preconceived idea about the immutability of supposedly ‘traditional’ gender roles in Russian history.

Abstract

Listening to Birth asserts that structures of power reproduce themselves by instituting particular modes of listening and sound production. Situating my research within feminist sound studies, I argue that meanings conjured around the audible, material bodies of women were carefully crafted by elites in antiquity, in order to construct gendered ideologies of kingship, civilisation, and nature. I examine these power dynamics as expressed in mythic and magical texts and iconographies, dating from the Bronze Age to later Roman antiquity. Throughout the thesis, I examine the development of symbolic systems and narrative tropes that linked mining and metallurgy with reproduction and vocality. My analysis emphasises how the invention of nature was accomplished, in part, through a metallurgical reclassification of the voices and sexualities of women as indiscrete phenomena: womb, mouth, and voice were elided with mining and smelting to form a unified semantic realm. I argue that this invention of ‘vulvar vocality’ reclassified female sounds as illicit, providing a plaform for the removal of women from the public sphere. I attempt to connect the gendered discourse found in myths and magical rituals to the political and economic domain of state-craft, to demonstrate the importance of hegemonic mythopoeic control of audible female reproduction for establishing ideologies of colonisation and extraction. I link analyses of texts and iconographies from the Bronze Age Mesopotamians, Hittites, Canaanites, Minoans, and Egyptians to later materials from the Iron Age Greeks, Israelites, and Romans—my goal is to demonstrate both the ubiquity and the continual reproduction of metallurgical ideology across the ancient world. I also present my preliminary research into the lasting impact that antique notions of vulvar vocality had on later state-craft. I begin to trace the preservation and elaboration of antique metallurgical literature by Byzantine and Islamic scholars, who in turn exerted strong influence on the Ottomans and late medieval and early modern Europeans. I outline future work to investigate the exponential rise of entrepreneurial metallurgy in late medieval and early modern Europe, arguing that this metallurgical discourse provided symbolic re-enforcement for the rapidly-accelerating mining and metal trade that formed the core of European colonial expansion. I suggest that vulvar vocality was central to early modern metallurgical, demonological, and colonial discourse, and that specific female vocalities and silences were purposefully crafted into the colonial project in order to forcibly redefine women, along with the lands and children stolen from them, as mere natural resources.

4. A Sense of Loss: The Effect of Prisoner Camp Conditions on German POWs’ Masculinity during the First World War

Abstract

During the First World War, almost a million German soldiers became prisoners of war (POW) and held captive in enemy camps. The moment of capture and arrest caused these men to experience debilitating emotions, including guilt and fear. Varied conditions at POW camps bolstered these responses and often determined prisoner health and morale throughout the war. This article examines how camps in Britain, France, and Russia treated German POWs, and how German nationalism affected these soldiers' senses of masculinity and patriotism during and after the war.

5. Medicinal Vibrations

Abstract

In the course of the mid to late 20th and 21st centuries the term "vibrator" has been synonymous with sexual gratification and the female sex drive. However, its original usage is more in line with a therapeutic medical treatment administered and recommended by medical professionals. In this article the history of the vibrator discusses the roots of medicines views on the female body and the ways in which their ailments were treated, with medicine not fully understanding the female sexual gratification of clitoral stimulation until the 1920s. These previous decades are colored by ancient understandings of the female sex and their bodily functions, ultimately culminating in the creation and implementation of the vibrator to relieve various feminine health issues, most prominently hysteria.

Abstract

Institutions of higher education were historically built to serve a wealthy, White, straight male student population and the leaders of these institutions still largely reflect these demographics. This project specifically aims to celebrate and amplify the life and career of university administrators who identify within the LGBTQ community. Mainly through the use of a portraiture methodology, this three-article study attempts to examine the ways in which LGBTQ identity and career influence one another. Worldmaking and narrative will be used as a theoretical frame to help analyze the ways in which the telling of a queer individual’s story makes the world at present and in the future, more queer. This research holds significance because it disrupts the heteronormative narrative within higher education administration and shows the unique ways that queer university leaders navigate an institution that has historically excluded them. It also works to archive the story of a trailblazing leader that can inform and inspire future generations of queer individuals looking to make their career in higher education administration.

Rural Hoosier homemakers have long negotiated the tensions of competing priorities and demands on their farms: clean and pure households, robust and profitable fields, and the health of their families. Agricultural experts have stressed the benefits of using pesticides to help achieve all three of these aspects of farm life, while public health advocates have warned of the potentially dire health consequences of large-scale, long-term pesticide use—particularly for children. This article analyzes gendered perceptions of risk-assessment regarding chronic exposure to pesticide residues from the turn of the twentieth century to the present day in Indiana. Abstract

This thesis investigates the role of gender violence and sexual terror in westward settler expansion of the United States in the nineteenth century. I posit that gender violence was not simply a symptom of war and colonization, but an integral piece of the American colonization strategy. Using studies of three locations during three different periods, I have found that the local, territorial, state, and federal governments all actively deployed sexual assault and other forms of gendered terror as methods of removing Indigenous peoples to reservations and rancherías, opening their lands to settlement and resource exploitation for the purpose of acquiring wealth and power for both individuals and the state itself. Through the lens of critical Indigenous feminist studies and utilizing the theories of Indigenous woman scholars, I have made connections between historical violence and the current crisis of violence against Indigenous women, girls, queer, trans, and two-spirit people, and, in particular, their abduction and murder, colloquially known as MMIWGQ2ST. While my research findings are oftentimes quite dark, I highlight the survival and resistance (survivance) of Indigenous women and girls and the hope on the horizon for decolonization, justice, and healing.

9. Re-Curation and Recognition: Addressing The Curation Crisis Through the Garnet Ghost Town

Abstract

As universities, federal curation facilities, public museums, and private collections struggle to create space on their shelves curators and archaeologists continuously evaluate what must continue to be stored and what needs to be deaccessioned. Utilizing a collection housed at the University of Montana I explore strategies for combating this issue. The collection originates from the Garnet Ghost Town and has been in the university’s care since its excavation. The objectives of this project are to obtain new information and incorporate innovative techniques to learn more about the collection itself and provide an updated analysis to one of Montana’s most complete Ghost Towns. This is achieved through the process of re-curation. The goals of recurating are to create a digital spreadsheet, identify objects of interest for testing or museum exhibition, extensive photography, and identify portions of the collection to be returned to the Ghost Town for interment. Additionally, re-curating the artifacts with newer theoretical frameworks and a better understanding of the hidden heritages within this industrial heritage landscape. The final objective is to prepare the information compiled so it can be made accessible in an effort to create equality in historic interpretation while creating a process that works in junction with the Bureau of Land Management, The University of Montana, and the public to conserve and preserve as much as possible while making room for the continuation of archaeological research.

10. Towards Non-Spectacularization: Tracing Black and Mixed-race Enslaved Women in Eighteenth-Century Narratives

Abstract

This thesis explores late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British archives concerning the lived experiences of Black and mixed-race women in plantation chattel slavery and the Middle Passage, spanning from 1774-1831. I consider how representations of sexual violence, rape, maternity, and trauma are leveraged and imagined by the archive and contemporary readings of the Middle Passage. I centrally ask: can we broaden our understanding of transatlantic slavery through the archive, or what some may call the tombs of the enslaved, without doubling the injury of the violence enslaved people endured? In doing so, I seek to not only contribute to scholarship that attempts to articulate how that identity of “woman” entangled with “race”—both Eurocentric social constructs—operated at that time, but to also offer new ways of thinking about how white scholars should approach the archive and contribute to scholarship on race, and blackness in particular.

11. The Murder of George Floyd: A Case Study Examining How the Policing of Black Men and Grassroots Activism Influence the Will of Black Women to Lead

Abstract

This study's objective investigates the viewpoints held by Black women in two urban areas of Minnesota about the social upheaval that followed the murder of George Floyd in 2020 for using a counterfeit $20 bill. In the last decade, police killings of innocent Black people in the United States have received more attention, and Floyd's death is only one example of this phenomenon. In the U.S., the likelihood of a police officer taking the life of a Black man is higher than that of a White man. Between 2013-2019 there have been 1,641 fatal shootings of defenseless Black men by police officers. Video of Floyd's murder and the demonstrations that followed was extensively disseminated by many news organizations and other media sites (Ladyzhinskaya, 2021). It has been demonstrated that widespread coverage of killings on social media is also easy to access and harms the psychological well-being of the Black community. This is especially true when viewed in the context of the historical framework of institutional and cultural racism and discrimination in the U.S. This research ascertains the extent to which several Black women residing in the metroplex of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, were prompted to respond and act as a direct result of Floyd's death due to police misconduct. All the participants were selected based on their well known presence in the Black community. Each spoke intimately about their personal and communal experiences, which have shaped their activism and commitment to social justice. Based on these participants' narratives, recommendations are provided for professional practices which will provide invaluable information to regulatory systems, such as policing and the judicial system.

The essay analyses the hitherto unexamined role of women in the historical scholarship of the first generation of the Annales, starting with Lucie Varga’s work and the unpaid assistance given to the publication by Simone Vidal Bloch and Suzanne Dognon Febvre. It then explores the education and careers of women somehow connected to the Annales from its founding in 1929 through World War II: the two who contributed articles (the historian-ethnographer Lucie Varga and the economic-historian Thérèse Sclafert); those whose books were reviewed or served as reviewers (the economic historian Yvonne Bézard, the linguist-mythographer Marie-Louise Sjœstedt; the Egyptologist Germaine Rouillard); and the Renaissance scholar Eugénie Droz, who published one of Febvre’s books. The École pratique des hautes études turns out to be a welcoming setting for women’s higher education. Yet, rather than university posts, they established careers as a librarian, archivist, publisher, or professor to women at Sèvres. The essay concludes with a consideration about the intellectual tributes paid in their works by Lucien Febvre and Frank Borkenau to their spouses, Lucie Varga and Suzanne Dognon.

13. ‘DEATH OF A UNION MAN’: RECONSTRUCTING CONFLICT AT WINDSOR CHRYSLER DURING THE LONG SEVENTIES

Abstract

The shooting of UAW Local 444 President Charles “Charlie” Brooks in January 1977 by former Chrysler worker Clarence Talbot, allegedly over a grievance, brought the city of Windsor, Ontario to a standstill. Recently fired from his position as a relief worker at the Chrysler plant, Talbot was in a very vulnerable position where his ability to survive hinged on a successful grievance. Brooks was a beloved labour leader noted for his radical and colourful ways who had a long history of working hard for union and community members through his advocacy. The Ontario Supreme Court ultimately declared Talbot not criminally responsible by reason of insanity resulting in an indefinite rehabilitory sentence to a mental asylum. These men’s lives and Brooks’ death can be better understood by historically examining the systems that surrounded them, especially by examining the social forces that shaped the expectations placed on them by their communities. Using academic sources and newspaper accounts of these events, this paper seeks to analyze factors that may have contributed to the shooting and the context in which it occurred. At a time when discussions of labour rights, civil rights and the criminal justice system are once again enflamed, this story seems especially apt for re-examination.
