"There are considerable gaps in the literature on college adjustment among Latinx students with respect to the roles of respect for family values, parental emotional support, and their interaction as potential correlates of academic, social, and psychological adjustment during college. This thesis seeks to fill these gaps with a sample of 77 Latinx college students. Informed by Yosso's (2005) community cultural wealth framework and Arnett's (2000) theory of emerging adulthood, the study focuses on the familial capital these students bring them to the university setting. Additionally, it recognizes emerging adulthood as a developmental period during which Latinx participants are navigating achieving psychological, social, and academic competence in a university setting that supports independent functioning. Results indicated a positive relationship between parental emotional support and social adjustment. No additional main effects or interaction effects were found. Significant demographic differences in levels of college adjustment emerged for student gender, COVID-19 impact, and student living arrangement. "While most research in Latinx populations has documented that endorsing filial obligation values predicts better psychosocial outcomes, some studies have also found potential negative ramifications of the fulfillment of high levels of filial obligations, including worse academic performance and psychological maladjustment (e.g., higher depressive symptoms) (Fuligni et al., 1999). These contradictory findings may be due to the role of perceived fairness of these obligations such that filial responsibility may only lead to positive outcomes when the youth perceives the responsibility to be fair and reciprocated, but it may lead to worse outcomes when perceived to be unfair (Kuperminc et al., 2013). Despite this vital role of perceived fairness, little is known about what contributes to the perceived fairness of filial obligations. The present study examined factors nested within the acculturative process (i.e., behavioral practices, values, identity, and acculturation gap) as predictors of perceived unfairness related to familial obligations among Latinx adolescents. Results indicate that the endorsement of mainstream cultural practices and values as well as greater acculturation gap conflict are all associated with higher perceptions of unfairness. Future studies would benefit from considering the acculturative context of the sample and focusing on familial dynamics to better understand perceptions of unfairness and its impacts on psychological outcomes."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

"Previous theory suggests that Latino adolescents and their mothers acculturate to the United States culture at different rates, leading to gaps in acculturation that may result in family conflict and youth maladjustment (Szapocznik & Kurtines, 1993). Because acculturation is a multi-faceted construct that includes identity, cultural value endorsement, and engagement in culturally-influenced behaviors (Schwartz, Unger, Zamboanga & Szapocznik, 2010), it is critical to identify the gaps in specific aspects of acculturation that are most detrimental for youth and family outcomes, such as cultural value gaps. The current study identified profiles of adolescent/mother dyads based on mean reports of cultural value endorsement across seven cultural values to determine patterns of cultural value endorsement across dyads and cultural value gaps within dyads. The sample included 174 Latino youth (51.4% female) and their mothers recruited from two middle schools in rural North Carolina. Results indicate that there are four profiles of adolescent-mother cultural value endorsement that result in patterns of cultural value gaps within dyads. Adolescent reports of acculturation-based family conflict differed across profiles such that the profile with adolescents who reported above average endorsement of the traditional gender role value and the U.S. mainstream values as compared to their mothers reported significantly more acculturation-based family conflict than adolescents in other profiles.
