An improved transmission line filter element allows a higher difference between even and odd mode impedances than previously obtainable from planar structures. The filter element comprises a U-shaped gap formed in the strip conductor of a strip line transmission line, a microstrip structure or a suspended strip line structure. The internal transmission line filters can be cascaded to produce electromagnetic energy filters with deeper notches and steeper skirts than previously obtainable from other planar structures with the same number of elements. A device for connecting plural oscillators to a single output port without the use of power dividers, switches or multiplexing filters. The plural oscillators produce multiple frequencies with only one oscillator operating at a given time. The oscillators are mounted in shunt waveguide cavities along a central waveguide manifold at distances from the central waveguide manifold and waveguide end so as not to affect the operating oscillator. A microwave rat-race mixer including a ring shaped transmission line and five transmission lines connected to the ring. Two of the transmission lines are connected to beam lead diodes and symmetrically positioned with respect to a third transmission line which carries the RF signal. A fourth transmission line carries the local oscillator (LO) signal. The fifth transmission line, symmetrically located with respect to the aforesaid first two transmission lines, is connected to the ring. Filters in the RF transmission line and the local oscillator transmission line pass RF and LO signals, respectively, and block intermediate frequency (IF) signals. A filter in the fifth transmission line passes the intermediate frequency signals and blocks the RF and LO frequency signals whereby the intermediate frequency signals are extracted from the ring via the fifth transmission line.
