4. Physically based stochastic perturbations improve high-resolution forecast of convection

Abstract

The physically based stochastic perturbation scheme PSP has been implemented in the convection-permitting ICON-D2 ensemble prediction system at DWD and run for a three-month trial experiment in summer 2021. The scheme mimics the impact of boundary layer turbulence on the smallest resolved scales and impacts in particular convective precipitation. A weather regime-dependent systematic evaluation shows that PSP efficiently increases ensemble spread of precipitation in weak synoptic forcing, while producing realistic convective structures. During strong forcing, the effect of the scheme is negligible, as expected by design. The probabilistic verification shows improvements in the forecast skill of other variables as well, especially the spread to skill ratio, but identifies starting points for further improvements of the method., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

5. Derivation and validation of a multiscale asymptotic framework for meso and synoptic scales of motion in the atmosphere

Abstract

Many processes in the atmosphere involved interactions over a wide range of length and time scales. One of the most important of these is the upscale growth of small errors that limit predictability. Multiscale asymptotic analysis is an attractive tool for understanding these interactions, since it enables the consistent derivation of approximate equations for each of the relevant scales, and of the interactions between scales. We consider motions where the leading order dynamics on the mesoscale is the weak temperature gradient approximation, and on the synoptic scale, quasigeostrophic theory. The dominant downscale interaction term is advection of mesoscale features by the synoptic-scale wind. In the upscale direction, the interactions take the form of eddy correlation terms, leading to a horizontal diffusion, but also transport of horizontal momentum by diabatically-driven vertical motions. The approximate equations are validated using high resolution numerical simulations, with appropriate filtering to separate the two scales of motion. The results confirm the leading-order dynamics on both scales, and allow a quantitative evaluation of the contributions of different scale interaction terms., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

The Amazon forest has the highest biodiversity on earth. However, information on Amazonian vertebrate diversity is still deficient and scattered across the published, peer-reviewed and grey literature and in unpublished raw data. Camera traps are an effective non-invasive method of surveying vertebrates, applicable to different scales of time and space. In this study, we organized and standardized camera trap records from different Amazon regions to compile the most extensive dataset of inventories of mammal, bird and reptile species ever assembled for the area. The complete dataset comprises 154,123 records of 317 species (185 birds, 119 mammals and 13 reptiles) gathered from surveys from the Amazonian portion of eight countries (Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela). 7. A 'Learning Platform' Approach to Outcome Measurement in Fragile X Syndrome: A Preliminary Psychometric Study

Abstract

Background: Clinical trials of medications to alleviate the cognitive and behavioural symptoms of individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS) are now underway. However, there are few reliable, valid and/or sensitive outcome measures available that can be directly administered to individuals with FXS. The majority of assessments employed in clinical trials may be suboptimal for individuals with intellectual disability (ID) because they require face-to-face interaction with an examiner, taxing administration periods, and do not provide reinforcement and/or feedback during the test. We therefore examined the psychometric properties of a new computerised "learning platform" approach to outcome measurement in FXS. Method: A brief computerised test, incorporated into the Discrete Trial Trainer[C]--a commercially available software program designed for children with ID--was administered to 13 girls with FXS, 12 boys with FXS and 15 matched ID controls aged 10 to 23 years (mental age = 4 to 12 years). The software delivered automated contingent access to reinforcement, feedback, token delivery and prompting procedures (if necessary) on each trial to facilitate responding. The primary outcome measure was the participant's learning rate, derived from the participant's cumulative record of correct responses. Results: All participants were able to complete the test and floor effects appeared to be minimal. Learning rates averaged approximately five correct responses per minute, ranging from one to eight correct responses per minute in each group. Test-retest reliability of the learning rates was 0.77 for girls with FXS, 0.90 for boys with FXS and 0.90 for matched ID controls. Concurrent validity with raw scores obtained on the Arithmetic subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III was 0.35 for girls with FXS, 0.80 for boys with FXS and 0.56 for matched ID controls. The learning rates were also highly sensitive to change, with effect sizes of 1.21, 0.89 and 1.47 each group respectively following 15 to 20, 15-min sessions of intensive discrete trial training conducted over 1.5 days. Conclusions: These results suggest that a learning platform approach to outcome measurement could provide investigators with a reliable, valid and highly sensitive measure to evaluate treatment efficacy, not only for individuals with FXS but also for individuals with other ID. Abstract

In the model that has become known as "Perfectly Secure Message Transmission"(PSMT), a sender Alice is connected to a receiver Bob through n parallel two-way channels. A computationally unbounded adversary Eve controls t of these channels, meaning she can acquire and alter any data that is transmitted over these channels. The sender Alice wishes to communicate a secret message to Bob privately and reliably, i.e. in such a way that Eve will not get any information about the message while Bob will be able to recover it completely. In this paper, we focus on protocols that work in two transmission rounds for n= 2t+1. We break from previous work by following a conceptually simpler blueprint for achieving a PSMT protocol. We reduce the previously best-known communication complexity, i.e. the number of transmitted bits necessary to communicate a 1-bit secret, from O(n^3 log n) to O(n^2 log n). Our protocol also answers a question raised by Kurosawa and Suzuki and hitherto left open: their protocol reaches optimal transmission rate for a secret of size O(n^2 log n) bits, and the authors raised the problem of lowering this threshold. The present solution does this for a secret of O(n log n) bits.

Abstract

Overseas holidays are nowadays very frequent, especially in the Caribbean with tempting splendid natural environment. Outside the own country persons are less likely to be familiar with a different health system and the legal framework; political and insurance policies can make sometimes problems insurmountable. Support which one can freely get in the home country may not be available or may be very expensive and the foreign office support sometimes provide interpreters, doctors and funeral assistance. The author present a case of a suspect death abroad far away from the own country, with poor health assistance in the emergency situations and the presentation focuses on the reconstruction of all medical activities arranged on place before death.

Abstract

This paper presents the outcome of investigations and studies of the vibratioon characteristics and response of low frequency structural systems for a composite concrete steel floor plate and a reverse profiled cable tensioned foot bridge. These highly dynamic and slender structure are the engineering response to planning, aesthetic and environmental influences, but are prone to excessive and complex vibration. A number of design codes and practice guides provided information to engineers for vibration mitigation However, they are limited to very simple load function applied to a few uncoupled translational modes of excitation. Motivated by the need to address the knowledge gaps in this area, the investigations described in this paper focused on synchronous multi-modal and coupled excitation of the floor plate and footbridge with considerations for torsinal effects. The results showed the potential for adverse dynamic response from multi-modal and coupled excitation influenced by patterned loading, structure geometry, stiffness distribution, directional effects, forcing functions based on activity frequency and duration of foot contact, and modal participation. It was also shown that higher harmonics of the load frequency can excite higher modes in the composite floor structure. Such responsive behaviour is prevalent mainly in slender and lightweight construction and not in stiffer and heavier structural systems. The analytical techniques and methods used in these investigations can supplement the current limited code and best practice provisions for mitigating the impact of human induced vibrations in slender structural systems.

Abstract

CdZnTe (CZT) is a promising detection medium for room-temperature semiconductor radiation- detectors. Their operational principle is based upon measuring the total number of electrons generated by incident particles. However, carrier trapping by impurity-related defects that exist in any semiconductor competes with the collection of the charge. The time the electrons remain free in the crystal and contribute to the output signals is termed the electron's lifetime. The charge-carrier lifetime is an important characteristic of any detecting medium. For CZT detectors, knowledge of it is critical in selecting high-grade material for fabricating devices. A common procedure for evaluating carrier lifetime rests upon using the Hecht equation to fit the measured dependences of the collected charge vs. the applied bias. Notwithstanding, the sensitivity range of the Hecht equation is limited. . For example, for a typical 2-mm-thick device and a μτ-product of about 10-3 cm²/V, the voltage range is extendable up to 200 V. But, if the μτ-product is about 10-2 cm²/V or higher, the useful range is limited to 20 V where systematic errors specific to this region strongly affect the measurements. Here, we describe our new technique for accurately measuring the electron lifetime in a high μτ-product CZT using long, >10 mm, virtual Frisch-grid CdZnTe detectors. The anode signals, digitized and processed, generate a curve of the dependence of the collected charge versus the electron-cloud's drift time. The slope of this curve directly measures the electron lifetime, yielding a value that is more accurate than estimates obtained from applying the Hecht equation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
