Search

Quantum materials governed by emergent topological fermions have become a cornerstone of physics. Dirac fermions in graphene form the basis for moir\'e quantum matter, and Dirac fermions in magnetic topological insulators enabled the discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall effect. In contrast, there are few materials whose electromagnetic response is dominated by emergent Weyl fermions. Nearly all known Weyl materials are overwhelmingly metallic, and are largely governed by irrelevant, conventional electrons. Here we theoretically predict and experimentally observe a semimetallic Weyl ferromagnet in van der Waals (Cr,Bi)$_2$Te$_3$. In transport, we find a record bulk anomalous Hall angle $> 0.5$ along with non-metallic conductivity, a regime sharply distinct from conventional ferromagnets. Together with symmetry analysis, our data suggest a semimetallic Fermi surface composed of two Weyl points, with a giant separation $> 75\%$ of the linear dimension of the bulk Brillouin zone, and no other electronic states. Using state-of-the-art crystal synthesis techniques, we widely tune the electronic structure, allowing us to annihilate the Weyl state and visualize a unique topological phase diagram exhibiting broad Chern insulating, Weyl semimetallic and magnetic semiconducting regions. When non-collinear spin textures are driven by current, an emergent electric field arises due to the emergent electromagnetic induction. So far, this phenomenon has been reported in several materials, manifesting the current-nonlinear imaginary part of the complex impedance. Recently, Furuta et al. proposed a time-varying temperature increase due to Joule heating as an alternative explanation for these current-nonlinear complex impedances [arXiv:2407.00309v1]. In this study, we re-examine the nonlinear complex impedance in GdRuAl12 and YMn6Sn6, specifically addressing the impact of the time-varying temperature increase. Our findings reveal that the magnetic-field angle, frequency, and temperature dependence of nonlinear complex impedances in these two materials cannot be explained by the time-varying temperature increase. Instead, these dependencies of the imaginary part of the nonlinear impedance are consistent with the expected behaviour in the theory of emergent electromagnetic induction. Moreover, we observe a significant real part of the nonlinear complex impedance, likely resulting from the dissipation associated with the current-driven motion of helices and domain walls. We formulate a first-principles approach for calculating the topological Hall effect (THE) in magnets with noncollinear nanoscale spin textures. We employ a modeling method to determine the effective magnetic field induced by the spin texture, thereby circumventing the computational challenges associated with superlattice calculations. Based on these results, we construct a Wannier tight-binding Hamiltonian to characterize the electronic states and calculate the Hall conductivity. Applying this approach to the skyrmion material $\rm Gd_2PdSi_3$ shows good agreement with experimental data. Our analysis in momentum space further reveals that the dominant contribution to the THE arises from the crossing points between the folded bands along high-symmetry lines in the Brillouin zone. This work advances numerical techniques for simulating general magnetic system, examplified by but not restricted to skyrmion lattice, and its result offering insights into the complex interplay between spin textures and electronic transport., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

The coupling of conduction electrons and magnetic textures leads to quantum transport phenomena described by the language of emergent electromagnetic fields [1-3]. For magnetic skyrmions, spin-swirling particle-like objects, an emergent magnetic field is produced by their topological winding [4-6], resulting in the conduction electrons exhibiting the topological Hall effect (THE) [7]. When the skyrmion lattice (SkL) acquires a drift velocity under conduction electron flow, an emergent electric field is also generated [8,9]. The resulting emergent electrodynamics dictate the magnitude of the THE via the relative motion of SkL and conduction electrons. Here, we report the emergent electrodynamics induced by SkL motion in Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$, facilitated by its giant THE [10,11]. With increasing current excitation, we observe the dynamic transition of the SkL motion from the pinned to creep regime and finally to the flow regime, where the THE is totally suppressed. We argue that the Galilean relativity required for the total cancellation of the THE can be generically recovered in the flow regime, even in complex multiband systems such as the present compound. Moreover, the observed THE voltages are large enough to enable real-time measurement of the SkL velocity-current profile, which reveals the inertial-like motion of the SkL in the creep regime, appearing as current-hysteretic behavior of the skyrmion velocity.

The thermoelectric Nernst effect of solids converts heat flow to beneficial electronic voltages. Here, using a correlated topological semimetal with high carrier mobility $\mu$ in presence of magnetic fluctuations, we demonstrate an enhancement of the Nernst effect close to a magnetic phase transition. A magnetic instability in NdAlSi modifies the carrier relaxation time on 'hotspots' in momentum space, causing a strong band filling dependence of $\mu$. We quantitatively derive electronic band parameters from a novel two-band analysis of the Nernst effect $S_{xy}$, in good agreement with quantum oscillation measurements and band calculations. While the Nernst response of NdAlSi behaves much like conventional semimetals at high temperatures, an additional contribution $\Delta S_{xy}$ from electronic correlations appears just above the magnetic transition. Our work demonstrates the engineering of the relaxation time, or the momentum-dependent self energy, to generate a large Nernst response independent of a material's carrier density, i.e. for metals, semimetals, and semiconductors with large $\mu$.

Skyrmion lattices (SkL) in centrosymmetric materials typically have a magnetic period on the nanometer-scale, so that the coupling between magnetic superstructures and the underlying crystal lattice cannot be neglected. Here, we reveal the commensurate locking of a SkL to the atomic lattice in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$ via high-resolution resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS). Weak easy-plane magnetic anisotropy, demonstrated here by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance and REXS, penalizes placing a skyrmion core on a site of the atomic lattice. Under these conditions, a commensurate SkL, locked to the crystal lattice, is stable at finite temperatures -- but gives way to a competing incommensurate ground state upon cooling. We discuss the role of Umklapp-terms in the Hamiltonian for the formation of this lattice-locked state, its magnetic space group, the role of slight discommensurations, or (line) defects in the magnetic texture, and contrast our findings with the case of SkLs in noncentrosymmetric material platforms., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, additional SI included (19 pages, 11 figures, 1 table)

We have investigated magnetic structures of the centrosymmetrric skyrmion material Gd2PdSi3 by means of polarized neutron scattering near zero field with an isotope-160Gd-enriched single crystal. In a previous study, magnetic structures in Gd2PdSi3 at low temperatures were studied by resonant X-ray scattering measurements [T. Kurumaji et al. Science 365, 914 (2019)]. The present polarized neutron results confirm that the magnetic structure in zero field has elliptic screw-type magnetic modulation with a propagation vector of (q, 0, 0) with q ~ 0.14 and its equivalents. As the temperature increases, the system undergoes a magnetic phase transition while keeping the incommensurate q-vector of (q,0,0). We found that the thermally-induced phase has sinusoidal magnetic modulations with magnetic moments perpendicular both to the c axis and to the q-vector. We also investigate the spin-helicity degree of freedom in the ground state by polarized neutrons, revealing that the system contains equal fractions of the left-handed and right-handed screw-type orders as expected from the centrosymmetric crystal structure., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic materials with tilted electron spins often exhibit conducting behavior that cannot be explained from semiclassical theories without invoking fictitious (emergent) electromagnetic fields. Quantum-mechanical models explaining such phenomena are rooted in the concept of a moving quasiparticle's Berry phase, driven by a chiral (left- or right-handed) spin-habit. Dynamical and nearly random spin fluctuations, with a slight bent towards left- or right-handed chirality, represent a promising route to realizing Berry-phase phenomena at elevated temperatures, but little is known about the effect of crystal lattice geometry on the resulting macroscopic observables. Here, we report thermoelectric and electric transport experiments on two metals with large magnetic moments on a triangular and on a slightly distorted kagom\'e lattice, respectively. We show that the impact of chiral spin fluctuations is strongly enhanced for the kagom\'e lattice. Both these spiral magnets have similar magnetic phase diagrams including a periodic array of magnetic skyrmions. However, our modelling shows that the geometry of the kagom\'e lattice, with corner-sharing spin-trimers, helps to avoid cancellation of Berry-phase contributions; spin fluctuations are endowed with a net chiral habit already in the thermally disordered (paramagnetic) state. Hence, our observations for the kagom\,e material contrast with theoretical models treating magnetization as a continuous field, and emphasize the role of lattice geometry on emergent electrodynamic phenomena., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

We report detailed measurements of the Onsager-like planar thermal Hall conductivity $\kappa_{xy}$ in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, a spin-liquid candidate of topical interest. With the thermal current ${\bf J}_{\rm Q}$ and magnetic field $\bf B\parallel a$ (zigzag axis), the observed $\kappa_{xy}/T$ varies strongly with temperature $T$ (1-10 K). The results are well-described by bosonic edge excitations which evolve to topological magnons at large $B$. Fits to $\kappa_{xy}/T$ yield a Chern number $\sim 1$ and a band energy $\omega_1\sim$1 meV, in agreement with sharp modes seen in electron spin-resonance experiments. In the metallic pyrochlore Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$, the conducting Molybdenum sublattice adopts canted, yet nearly collinear ferromagnetic order with nonzero scalar spin chirality. The chemical potential may be controlled by replacing Nd$^{3+}$ with Ca$^{2+}$, while introducing only minimal additional disorder to the conducting states. Here, we demonstrate the stability of the canted ferromagnetic state, including the tilting angle of Molybdenum spins, in (Nd$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ (NCMO) with $x\le 0.15$ using magnetic susceptibility measurements. Mo-Mo and Mo-Nd magnetic couplings both change sign above $x=0.22$, where the canted ferromagnetic state gives way to a spin-glass metallic region. In the class of materials called spin liquids, a magnetically ordered state cannot be attained even at milliKelvin temperatures because of conflicting constraints on each spin (for e.g. from geometric or exchange frustration). The resulting quantum spin-liquid (QSL) state is currently of intense interest because it exhibits novel excitations as well as wave-function entanglement. The layered insulator $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ orders as a zigzag antiferromagnet below $\sim$7 K in zero magnetic field. The zigzag order is destroyed when a magnetic field $\bf H$ is applied parallel to the zigzag axis a. Within the field interval (7.3, 11) Tesla, there is growing evidence that a QSL state exists. Here we report the observation of oscillations in its thermal conductivity below 4 K. The oscillation amplitude is very large within the interval (7.3, 11) T and strongly suppressed on either side. Paradoxically, the oscillations are periodic in 1/\emph{H}, analogous to quantum oscillations in metals, even though $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is an excellent insulator with a gap of 1.9 eV. By tilting $\bf H$ out of the plane, we find that the oscillation period is determined by the in-plane component $H_a$. As the temperature is raised above 0.5 K, the oscillation amplitude decreases exponentially. The decrease anticorrelates with the emergence above $\sim$2 K of an anomalous planar thermal Hall conductivity measured with $\bf H\parallel a$. When nanometric, noncoplanar spin textures with scalar spin chirality (SSC) are coupled to itinerant electrons, they endow the quasiparticle wavefunctions with a gauge field, termed Berry curvature, in a way that bears analogy to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The resulting deflection of moving charge carriers is termed geometrical (or topological) Hall effect. Previous experimental studies modeled this signal as a real-space motion of wavepackets under the influence of a quantum-mechanical phase. In contrast, we here compare the modification of Bloch waves themselves, and of their energy dispersion, due to SOC and SSC. Using the canted pyrochlore ferromagnet Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ as a model compound, our transport experiments and first-principle calculations show that SOC impartially mixes electronic bands with equal or opposite spin, while SSC is much more effective for opposite spin band pairs., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

For the skyrmion-hosting intermetallic Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$ with centrosymmetric hexagonal lattice and triangular net of rare earth sites, we report a thorough investigation of the magnetic phase diagram. Our work reveals a new magnetic phase with isotropic value of the critical field for all orientations, where the magnetic ordering vector $\mathbf{q}$ is depinned from its preferred directions in the basal plane. This is in contrast to the highly anisotropic behavior of the low field phases, such as the skyrmion lattice (SkL), which are easily destroyed by in-plane magnetic field. The bulk nature of the SkL and of other magnetic phases was evidenced by specific-heat measurements. Resistivity anisotropy, likely originating from partial gapping of the density of states along $\mathbf{q}$ in this RKKY magnet, is picked up via the planar Hall effect (PHE). The PHE confirms the single-$\mathbf{q}$ nature of the magnetic order when the field is in the hexagonal plane, and allows to detect the preferred directions of $\mathbf{q}$. For field aligned perpendicular to the basal plane, several scenarios for the depinned phase (DP), such as tilted conical order, are discussed on the basis of the data., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures (including SI)

The topological Hall effect (THE) and its thermoelectric counterpart, the topological Nernst effect (TNE), are hallmarks of the skyrmion lattice phase (SkL). We observed the giant TNE of the SkL in centrosymmetric Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$, comparable in magnitude to the largest anomalous Nernst signals in ferromagnets. Significant enhancement (suppression) of the THE occurs when doping electrons (holes) to Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$. On the electron-doped side, the topological Hall conductivity approaches the characteristic threshold $\sim 1000\,\left(\mathrm{\Omega cm}\right)^{-1}$ for the intrinsic regime. The wavefuntion of conduction electrons moving in the background of a non-coplanar spin structure can gain a quantal phase - Berry phase - as if the electrons were moving in a strong fictitious magnetic field. Such an emergent magnetic field effect is approximately proportional to the solid angle subtended by the spin moments on three neighbouring spin sites, termed the scalar spin chirality. The entire spin chirality of the crystal, unless macroscopically canceled, causes the geometrical Hall effect of real-space Berry-phase origin, whereas the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in a conventional metallic ferromagnet is of the momentum-space Berry-phase origin induced by relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we report the ordering phenomena of the spin-trimer scalar spin chirality and the consequent large geometrical Hall effect in the breathing kagom\'e lattice compound Dy$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, where the Dy$^{3+}$ moments form non-coplanar spin trimers with local spin chirality. Using neutron diffraction, we show that the local spin chirality of the spin trimers as well as its ferroic/antiferroic orders can be switched by an external magnetic field, accompanying large changes in the geometrical Hall effect. Our finding reveals that systems composed of tunable spin trimers can be a fertile field to explore large emergent electromagnetic responses arising from real-space topological magnetic orders., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

In this letter, we report the gigantic thermal Hall effect $\kappa_{xy}$ in the low-field correlated-paramagnetic state of the frustrated pyrochlore Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. We observed a record magnitude for the thermal Hall angle in an insulator, $\left|\kappa_{xy}\right|/\kappa_{xx}\sim 2\,\%$. The signal onsets at $T\sim 3\,$K and is severely weakened around the transition to canted ferromagnetic order at $T_\text{CFM}=0.275\,$K. Besides the large $\kappa_{xy}>0$ of the fluctuating regime, a sign change towards negative $\kappa_{xy}$ occurs at the lowest temperatures and in moderate field, where sharp magnon excitations appear in the inelastic neutron scattering spectra. We analyze the magnon-Hall signal and its suppression with field semi-quantitatively. A contribution of phonon skew scattering to $\kappa_{xy}$ is ruled out by a comparison of $\kappa_{xx}$ for Tb-, Yb-, and Y-based rare earth pyrochlore titanates. These results represent the first report of non-vanishing $\kappa_{xy}$ measured in a dilution refrigerator ($T < 0.29\,$K)., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

A recurring theme in topological matter is the protection of unusual electronic states by symmetry, for example, protection of the surface states in Z2 topological insulators by time reversal symmetry [1-3]. Recently interest has turned to unusual surface states in the large class of nonsymmorphic materials [4-11]. In particular KHgSb is predicted to exhibit double quantum spin Hall (QSH) states [10]. Here we report observation of a novel feature of the Hall conductivity in KHgSb in strong magnetic field B. In the quantum limit, the Hall conductivity is observed to fall exponentially to zero, but the diagonal conductivity is finite. A large gap protects this unusual zero-Hall state. We propose that, in this limit, the chemical potential drops into the bulk gap, intersecting equal numbers of right and left-moving QSH surface modes to produce the zero-Hall state., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic skyrmion textures are realized mainly in non-centrosymmetric, e.g. chiral or polar, magnets. Extending the field to centrosymmetric bulk materials is a rewarding challenge, where the released helicity / vorticity degree of freedom and higher skyrmion density result in intriguing new properties and enhanced functionality. We report here on the experimental observation of a skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase with large topological Hall effect and an incommensurate helical pitch as small as 2.8 nm in metallic Gd3Ru4Al12, which materializes a breathing kagom\'e lattice of Gadolinium moments. The magnetic structure of several ordered phases, including the SkL, is determined by resonant x-ray diffraction as well as small angle neutron scattering. The SkL and helical phases are also observed directly using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Geometrically frustrated magnets provide abundant opportunities for discovering complex spin textures, which sometimes yield unconventional electromagnetic responses in correlated electron systems. It is theoretically predicted that magnetic frustration may also promote a topologically nontrivial spin state, i.e., magnetic skyrmions, which are nanometric spin vortices. Empirically, however, skyrmions are essentially concomitant with noncentrosymmetric lattice structures or interfacial-symmetry-breaking heterostructures. Here, we report the emergence of a Bloch-type skyrmion state in the frustrated centrosymmetric triangular-lattice magnet Gd2PdSi3. We identified the field-induced skyrmion phase via a giant topological Hall response, which is further corroborated by the observation of in-plane spin modulation probed by resonant x-ray scattering. Quantum critical points (QCPs) emerge when a 2nd order phase transition is suppressed to zero temperature. In metals the quantum fluctuations at such a QCP can give rise to new phases including unconventional superconductivity. Whereas antiferromagnetic QCPs have been studied in considerable detail ferromagnetic (FM) QCPs are much harder to access. In almost all metals FM QCPs are avoided through either a change to 1st order transitions or through an intervening spin-density-wave (SDW) phase. Here, we study the prototype of the second case, NbFe$_2$. We demonstrate that the phase diagram can be modelled using a two-order-parameter theory in which the putative FM QCP is buried within a SDW phase. We establish the presence of quantum tricritical points (QTCPs) at which both the uniform and finite $q$ susceptibility diverge. The universal nature of our model suggests that such QTCPs arise naturally from the interplay between SDW and FM order and exist generally near a buried FM QCP of this type. Our results promote NbFe$_2$ as the first example of a QTCP, which has been proposed as a key concept in a range of narrow-band metals, including the prominent heavy-fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$., Comment: 21 pages including SI

Dirac and Weyl semimetals display a host of novel properties. In Cd$_3$As$_2$, the Dirac nodes lead to a protection mechanism that strongly suppresses backscattering in zero magnetic field, resulting in ultrahigh mobility ($\sim$ 10$^7$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$). In applied magnetic field, an anomalous Nernst effect is predicted to arise from the Berry curvature associated with the Weyl nodes. We report observation of a large anomalous Nernst effect in Cd$_3$As$_2$. Both the anomalous Nernst signal and transport relaxation time $\tau_{tr}$ begin to increase rapidly at $\sim$ 50 K. This suggests a close relation between the protection mechanism and the anomalous Nernst effect. In a field, the quantum oscillations of bulk states display a beating effect, suggesting that the Dirac nodes split into Weyl states, allowing the Berry curvature to be observed as an anomalous Nernst effect., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Weyl fermions can be created in materials with both time reversal and inversion symmetry by applying a magnetic field, as evidenced by recent measurements of anomalous negative magnetoresistance. Here, we do a thorough analysis of the Weyl points in these materials: by enforcing crystal symmetries, we classify the location and monopole charges of Weyl points created by fields aligned with high-symmetry axes. The analysis applies generally to materials with band inversion in the $T_d$, $D_{4h}$ and $D_{6h}$ point groups. For the $T_d$ point group, we find that Weyl nodes persist for all directions of the magnetic field. Further, we compute the anomalous magnetoresistance of field-created Weyl fermions in the semiclassical regime. We find that the magnetoresistance can scale non-quadratically with magnetic field, in contrast to materials with intrinsic Weyl nodes. Weyl fermions have recently been observed in several time-reversal-invariant semimetals and photonics materials with broken inversion symmetry. These systems are expected to have exotic transport properties such as the chiral anomaly. However, most discovered Weyl materials possess a substantial number of Weyl nodes close to the Fermi level that give rise to complicated transport properties. Here we predict, for the first time, a new family of Weyl systems defined by broken time-reversal symmetry, namely, Co-based magnetic Heusler materials XCo2Z (X = IVB or VB; Z = IVA or IIIA). To search for Weyl fermions in the centrosymmetric magnetic systems, we recall an easy and practical inversion invariant, which has been calculated to be -1, guaranteeing the existence of an odd number of pairs of Weyl fermions. These materials exhibit, when alloyed, only two Weyl nodes at the Fermi level - the minimum number possible in a condensed matter system. The Weyl nodes are protected by the rotational symmetry along the magnetic axis and separated by a large distance (of order 2$\pi$) in the Brillouin zone. The corresponding Fermi arcs have been calculated as well. The Dirac and Weyl semimetals are unusual materials in which the nodes of the bulk states are protected against gap formation by crystalline symmetry. The chiral anomaly~\cite{Adler,Bell}, predicted to occur in both systems, was recently observed as a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR) in Na$_3$Bi and in TaAs. An important issue is whether Weyl physics appears in a broader class of materials. We report evidence for the chiral anomaly in the half-Heusler GdPtBi. In zero field, GdPtBi is a zero-gap semiconductor with quadratic bands. In a magnetic field, the Zeeman energy leads to Weyl nodes. We have observed a large negative LMR with the field-steering properties specific to the chiral anomaly. The chiral anomaly also induces strong suppression of the thermopower. We report a detailed study of the thermoelectric response function $\alpha_{xx}$ of Weyl fermions. High quality single crystals of WTe$_2$ were grown using a Te flux followed by a cleaning step involving self-vapor transport. The method is reproducible and yields consistently higher quality single crystals than are typically obtained via halide assisted vapor transport methods. Magnetoresistance (MR)values at 9 Tesla and 2 Kelvin as high as 1.75 million \%, nearly an order of magnitude higher than previously reported for this material, were obtained on crystals with residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of approximately 1250. The MR follows a near B$^2$ law (B = 1.95(1)) and, assuming a semiclassical model, the average carrier mobility for the highest quality crystal was found to be ~167,000 cm$^2$/Vs at 2 K. At low temperatures, the thermal conductivity of spin excitations in a magnetic insulator can exceed that of phonons. However, because they are charge neutral, the spin waves are not expected to display a thermal Hall effect in a magnetic field. Recently, this semiclassical notion has been upended in quantum magnets in which the spin texture has a finite chirality. In the Kagome lattice, the chiral term generates a Berry curvature. This results in a thermal Hall conductivity $\kappa_{xy}$ that is topological in origin. Here we report observation of a large $\kappa_{xy}$ in the Kagome magnet Cu(1-3, bdc) which orders magnetically at 1.8 K. The observed $\kappa_{xy}$ undergoes a remarkable sign-reversal with changes in temperature or magnetic field, associated with sign alternation of the Chern flux between magnon bands. In a ferromagnet, the spin excitations are the well-studied magnons. In frustrated quantum magnets, long-range magnetic order fails to develop despite a large exchange coupling between the spins. In contrast to the magnons in conventional magnets, their spin excitations are poorly understood. Are they itinerant or localized? Here we show that the thermal Hall conductivity $\kappa_{xy}$ provides a powerful probe of spin excitations in the "quantum spin ice" pyrochlore Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. The thermal Hall response is large even though the material is transparent. The Hall response arises from spin excitations with specific characteristics that distinguish them from magnons. At low temperature ($T<$ 1 K), the thermal conductivity imitates that of a dirty metal. 3D Dirac semi-metals (DSMs) are materials that have massless Dirac electrons and exhibit exotic physical properties It has been suggested that structurally distorting a DSM can create a Topological Insulator (TI), but this has not yet been experimentally verified. Furthermore, quasiparticle excitations known as Majorana Fermions have been theoretically proposed to exist in materials that exhibit superconductivity and topological surface states. Here we show that the cubic Laves phase Au$_2$Pb has a bulk Dirac cone above 100 K that gaps out upon cooling at a structural phase transition to create a topologically non trivial phase that superconducts below 1.2 K. The nontrivial Z$_2$ = -1 invariant in the low temperature phase indicates that Au$_2$Pb in its superconducting state must have topological surface states. These characteristics make Au$_2$Pb a unique platform for studying the transition between bulk Dirac electrons and topological surface states as well as studying the interaction of superconductivity with topological surface states.

Cr$_2$B displays temperature independent paramagnetism. We induce ferromagnetism by replacing less than $3\,\%$ of the Cr atoms by Fe. By the lowest Fe doping level made, Curie-Weiss behavior is observed; $\Theta_{CW}$ changes from $-20\,$K for $0.5\,\%$ Fe-doped Cr$_2$B to positive values of about 50 K by $5\,\%$ Fe doping. The ferromagnetic T$_C$ is 8 K for $2.5\,\%$ Fe doping and increases linearly to 46 K by $5\,\%$ doping; we infer that a quantum phase transition occurs near the $2.0\,\%$ Fe level. Magnetic fluctuations at the intermediate doping levels are reflected in the linear resistance and an anomalous heat capacity at low temperatures. Strong evidence for charge-density correlation in the underdoped phase of the cuprate YBa2Cu3Oy was obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resonant x-ray scatter- ing. The fluctuations were found to be enhanced in strong magnetic fields. Recently, 3D (three dimensional) charge-density wave (CDW) formation with long-range order (LRO) was observed by x-ray diffraction in H >15 T. To elucidate how the CDW transition impacts the pair condensate, we have used torque magnetization to 45 T and thermal conductivity $\kappa_{xx}$ to construct the magnetic phase diagram in untwinned crystals with hole density p = 0.11. We show that the 3D CDW transitions appear as sharp features in the susceptibility and $\kappa_{xx}$ at the fields HK and Hp, which define phase boundaries in agreement with spectroscopic techniques. From measurements of the melting field Hm(T) of the vortex solid, we obtain evidence for two vortex solid states below 8 K. At 0.5 K, the pair condensate appears to adjust to the 3D CDW by a sharp transition at 24 T between two vortex solids with very different shear moduli. The lead chalcogenides (Pb,Sn)Te and (Pb,Sn)Se are the first examples of topological crystalline insulators (TCI) predicted \cite{Fu,Hsieh} (and confirmed \cite{Hasan,Story,Takahashi}) to display topological surface Dirac states (SDS) that are protected by mirror symmetry. A starting premise \cite{Hsieh} is that the SDS arise from bulk states describable as massive Dirac states \cite{Wallis,Svane}, but this assumption is untested. Here we show that the thermoelectric response of the bulk states display features specific to the Dirac spectrum. We show that, in the quantum limit, the lowest Landau Level (LL) is singly spin-degenerate, whereas higher levels are doubly degenerate. The abrupt change in spin degeneracy leads to a large step-decrease in the thermopower $S_{xx}$. In the lowest LL, $S_{xx}$ displays a striking linear increase vs. magnetic field.
