This paper will discuss how the Writing Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara “flipped the script” on placement by implementing a model that emphasizes the importance of student voices. Our Collaborative Writing Placement (CWP) shares many similarities with Directed Self-Placement (DSP) in that its instrument consists of survey questions and reflective writing opportunities (Aull, 2021; Gere, Ruggles, et. al., 2013). But it differs from DSP in that students work with writing faculty in choosing the first-year course that is the best fit for them. Through an examination of our initial data, and the first two years of CWP’s implementation, our paper will discuss how the CWP offers another avenue for promoting student agency and generating more equitable placement outcomes.

- Abstract
Undergraduate students are a critical resource for university-community programs that provide enriching learning opportunities for school-age youth who have limited exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Many universities offer afterschool outreach programs that enable youth to interact with science faculty, and many such programs depend on undergraduates as facilitators. However, education research has focused on the youth served rather than on the undergraduates who facilitate the outreach programs. To study why undergraduates participate in youth programming, the authors conducted a qualitative exploration of the experiences and perspectives of women undergraduates who facilitated an afterschool program that engages girls and nonbinary youth with scientists and engineers of similar gender identities. The authors focused on identifying the motivations and interests of these undergraduate facilitators in an effort to understand their views about the potential benefits of participation. This study sheds light on undergraduates' reasons for devoting time and energy to university-community STEM programs. The findings may help other university-community programs grow in their support of undergraduate facilitators.

- Abstract
Pneumocoelom secondary to primary pulmonary disease was diagnosed via CT (three cases) or radiographs and coelioscopy (one case) in one Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) and three loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles. All cases were suspected to be caused by trauma to the lung, and all exhibited positive buoyancy disorders. Coelomocentesis alone was ineffective at resolving each pneumocoelom, suggesting a large and persistent tear in the pulmonary parenchyma. An autologous (in three cases) or allogenic (in one case) blood patch pleurodesis was performed. The pneumocoelom was resolved in all four cases with no noted postoperative complications. Follow-up diagnostic imaging confirmed resolution of the pneumocoelom in three cases, and all four patients were successfully rehabilitated and had normal buoyancy at the time of release. One rehabilitated loggerhead was satellite tagged, and the tracking data demonstrated that the animal was still alive and moving normally 126 d postrelease, when the tag stopped transmitting. In sea turtles, an autologous or allogenic blood patch pleurodesis can be safely performed in cases of persistent pneumocoelom secondary to traumatic primary pulmonary disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND. Severe gonadal steroid deficiency induces bone loss in adult men; however, the specific roles of androgen and estrogen deficiency in hypogonadal bone loss are unclear. Additionally, the threshold levels of testosterone and estradiol that initiate bone loss are uncertain. METHODS. One hundred ninety-eight healthy men, ages 20-50, received goserelin acetate, which suppresses endogenous gonadal steroid production, and were randomized to treatment with 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5, or 10 grams of testosterone gel daily for 16 weeks. An additional cohort of 202 men was randomized to receive these treatments plus anastrozole, which suppresses conversion of androgens to estrogens. Thirty-seven men served as controls and received placebos for goserelin and testosterone. Changes in bone turnover markers, bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and BMD by quantitative computed tomography (QCT) were assessed in all men. Bone microarchitecture was assessed in 100 men. RESULTS. As testosterone dosage decreased, the percent change in C-telopeptide increased. These increases were considerably greater when aromatization of testosterone to estradiol was also suppressed, suggesting effects of both testosterone and estradiol deficiency. Decreases in DXA BMD were observed when aromatization was suppressed but were modest in most groups. QCT spine BMD fell substantially in all testosterone-dose groups in which aromatization was also suppressed, and this decline was independent of testosterone dose. Estradiol deficiency disrupted cortical microarchitecture at peripheral sites. Estradiol levels above 10 pg/ml and testosterone levels above 200 ng/dl were generally sufficient to prevent increases in bone resorption and decreases in BMD in men. CONCLUSIONS. Estrogens primarily regulate bone homeostasis in adult men, and testosterone and estradiol levels must decline substantially to impact the skeleton. TRIAL REGISTRATION. ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00114114. FUNDING. AbbVie Inc., AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, NIH., Introduction Gonadal steroids have powerful effects on bone. During puberty, increases in gonadal steroids stimulate osteoblast activity, causing bone mineral density (BMD) to increase markedly (1). At midlife in women, [...]

ALUMINUM alloys ,ALUMINUM composites ,CERAMICS ,THERMAL resistance ,IRON ,WEAR resistance - Abstract
Particle-reinforced aluminium matrix composites (AMC) with a high-volume fraction of ceramic reinforcement (>30 vol.%) combine high specific strength and stiffness with good wear resistance and thermal stability, resulting in their increasing popularity in high-load applications, such as brake discs and bearings. It is hence assumed that AMC will accumulate as scrap in the near future. Appropriate recycling strategies must therefore be developed to maintain AMC's inherent properties. Melt-metallurgical recycling routes bear the danger of dissolving the ceramic reinforcement in the liquid metallic matrix and contaminating primary melts or forming intermetallic phases in secondary melts. Here, a solid-state AMC recycling route with crushing and sintering is investigated, wherein all steps are carried out below the solidification temperature of the aluminium matrix. A sintered primary AMC is mechanically converted into a particulate/powdery secondary raw AMC in coarse, medium, and milled quality (i.e., with d ≈ 7–12 mm, d ≈ 3–7 mm, and d < 300 µm) and subsequently resistance heating sintered to a secondary AMC under a variation of the sintering pressure. The two AMC generations are analysed and discussed regarding their microstructure and mechanical properties. Since the secondary AMC show reduced the mechanical strength, the fracture surfaces are analysed, revealing iron contaminations from the mechanical processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Despite decades of conservation efforts, population recovery remains elusive for the loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nesting in Florida, the largest aggregation globally. Limited studies exist regarding reproductive strategies and in-water habitat use of loggerheads in southeastern Florida. I used satellite telemetry to track the movements of 17 nesting loggerheads on Juno and Jupiter Beaches during the 2020 and 2021 nesting seasons. The majority of females displayed high nest-site fidelity. Inter-nesting intervals ranged from 10–19 days and were negatively correlated with water temperatures. Core inter-nesting areas ranged from 3.7–805.8 km2 and were located a mean 1.6 km from land. Mean clutch frequency was 5.9 nests/female, the highest reported for any loggerhead population worldwide. These findings suggest the number of females in the southeastern Florida population may be over-estimated due to an underestimated clutch frequency. Protective measures should target high-use coastal areas to maximize conservation benefits., 2022, Includes bibliography., Degree granted: Thesis (MS)--Florida Atlantic University, 2022., Collection: FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

This bachelor thesis does focus in the look back of students of early childhood education and care in the fifth grade at previous practical lessons. The path of the BAfEP students' practical lessons is shaped by practice teachers and elementary pedagogues. In order to prepare them for the upcoming challenges in the professional field, it is necessary to provide them with the professional competence. This requires intensive preparation to give them the opportunity to try out and reflect their own practice ideas. In the course of this, school education and in particular the subject of practice is investigated. Practical lessons have a share of 10% in the education. Its contents and tasks (including the linking of theory and practice) are also explained. In addition, the heterogeneous training and the role of the practical teacher himself are explained. In Austria, the supervision of students in their internships by elementary pedagogues does not require any special further qualification. The perspective of career starters on their past practical lessons is also included in this thesis. Based on the analysis of interviews conducted, it is to be made visible how active students from fifth grades reflect on their practical training and the resulting consequences for practical school education, of early childhood education and care, are drawn.

The bachelor thesis deals with the importance of peer relationships for second language acquisition how this can be accompanied in early childhood education and care facilities. The relevance of verbal and non-verbal peer interactions for second language acquisition is explained and the necessary of positive emotional state of children for language acquisition is pointed out. In particular, the equality of the peers is central in this context. In addition, the importance of peer interactions, play and peer interactions for language development is also explained. An overview of the professional literature and research on first and second language acquisition and peers are given, before the documented play situation is worked through using a single case analysis. Two playing peers, who have acquired German as a first and second language, will be examined. On the basis of the analysis, the importance of peer relationships for second language acquisition will be shown and pedagogical consequences are derived.

DIAGNOSIS of alcoholism ,SUBSTANCE abuse diagnosis ,RESEARCH evaluation ,MEDICAL screening ,FACTOR analysis - Abstract
(a) Objective: This study examined the reliability and validity of the Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS) alcohol and drug use screeners. (b) Method: We examined internal consistency, inter-item correlations, and used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and item response theory (IRT) to assess item-specific information regarding a single latent dimension of substance use severity. (c) Results: Results supported the TRAS alcohol and drug screeners to measure a single dimension of alcohol and drug use severity. More specifically, the instruments appear to be effective screeners of moderate to severe alcohol use problems, and thus effective screeners for referral for further assessment and possible treatment. (d) Conclusions: Treatment can only be provided for problems that are well defined and diagnosed. Continuing evaluation of substance abuse screeners and assessment is important, especially for justice-involved persons. Effective screeners can lead to more people getting needed assessment and treatment. Recommendations were to drop one item on each screener due to redundancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

financial inclusion ,Honduras ,financial system development ,remittances ,migration - Abstract
This research comprises an empirical analysis of the relationship between remittances and financial inclusion for the country case study Honduras. It is therefore located at the junction of two broader areas of research, finance and development, on the one hand, and remittances and development, on the other. Both fields have recently attracted considerable attention from researchers and practitioners in international development organizations. While research on finance and development is generally concerned with how the development of the financial system affects the development of a country, or how financial inclusion can be beneficial to individuals and firms, research on remittances and development focuses on how remittances, that is, the money sent home to their families from migrants abroad, affect the development of the receiving countries and the well-being of the recipients and their families. Interestingly, not much research has been conducted yet at this junction. In practice, however, the two areas are very closely connected since in many countries remittances are primarily paid out via the financial system. For the empirical analysis three types of data that were collected specifically for this research are combined with two distinct methods of data analysis. A standard quantitative approach in the form of a binary logistic regression model is applied to a quantitative dataset, which was collected through standardized interviews with the receivers of remittances at one Honduran bank. The research question that is answered by this approach is concerned with identifying the factors that determine financial inclusion of the receivers of remittances. To this end, both individual socioeconomic variables and variables specific to migrant families are taken into account. A less common approach is taken for analyzing a second research question, at least when it comes to economic research. The study combines the results from the analysis of all three types of data collected for this research, the standardized interviews with remittances receivers, sector-wide expert interviews with representatives from financial institutions, and publicly available information on the Honduran financial sector by applying a mixed method research approach. The objective of this approach is to analyze the effect remittances have on access barriers to finance and to determine the factors that currently prevent or promote the financial inclusion of the receivers of remittances in Honduras. The two concepts that are applied in this study, financial inclusion and access barriers to finance, are closely connected. While financial inclusion refers to the actual use of financial services, such as holding an account, access barriers to finance are those obstacles that prevent people from accessing and using financial services. Access barriers can have their origin on the demand side or on the supply side, but may also be related to context factors. Results from the analysis of the first research question reveal that the likelihood of being poor as a proxy for income and years of receiving remittances correlate significantly with financial inclusion of remittances receivers. While most studies on the determinants of financial inclusion find income (or some proxy of income) to be a good predictor of financial inclusion, years of receiving remittances is specific to migrant families and points in the direction of a remittance life cycle motive, where this money first serves other purposes, such as paying off migration-related debt and buying or remodeling a house, before it might find its way into a bank account. Results from the analysis of the quantitative data also show that half of those remittances receivers who now own an account did not have an account prior to receiving remittances; thus, their contact with a financial institution, which eventually led to their financial inclusion, was likely established through remittances. Both results indicate that the regular contact with a financial institution through remittances receipt lowers cultural barriers and promotes financial inclusion. In addition, the level of financial literacy of remittances receivers also correlates significantly with financial inclusion in one dataset, and although there is no indication of causality, this result is in line with current research results from studies on financial inclusion. Results from the analysis of the second research question address how remittances can lower access barriers to finance. Apart from raising the receivers’ income, it is shown that the formalized pay out structure of remittances in Honduras works in favor of financial inclusion through the regular contact that is created between receivers of remittances and the financial sector. Financial institutions in Honduras show interest in the receivers of remittances and have developed specialized products and services for this market segment. Neither the pricing nor lack of documentation seems to be relevant for excluding the receivers of remittances from the financial system. Rather it seems that geography and a lack of regulation to introduce innovations that could bring financial institutions closer to rural populations as well as the low levels of education in general and the level of financial literacy specifically present relevant current access barriers. The same is true for the general economic context in Honduras, which has been challenging in the last few years following the international financial crisis and national political crisis in 2009. In addition, the current market structure does not allow direct deposit of remittances, a promising product feature for the financial inclusion of remittances receivers, to live up to its potential. Finally, current regulation, which makes it nearly impossible for financial institutions in Honduras to offer savings accounts to their population abroad, was identified as a relevant access barrier for the financial inclusion of remittances senders. Policy recommendations for Honduras that can be drawn from the results of this study are linked to changes in the regulatory environment and to improvements in education in general and financial literacy specifically., Die vorliegende Studie beinhaltet eine empirische Analyse der Beziehung zwischen Rücküberweisungen von Migranten und Zugang zum Finanzsystem (finanzieller Inklusion) der Empfänger dieser Geldtransfers in Honduras.

GEOTEXTILES , *SEA turtles , *SHORE birds , *BEACH erosion - Abstract
Hard armoring technologies (e.g. rock revetments and seawalls), which are installed to protect homes from beach erosion, can diminish the aesthetics and amenity of the beach. Over time, these structures cause beach narrowing and often prevent marine turtle access to nesting habitat altogether. An alternative armoring technology, known as geotextile dune core systems (or geocores), has been developed and implemented to protect inland infrastructure from beach erosion, yet there remains an absence of research on possible effects on marine turtles. In this study, we examined the impacts of a geocore installed on Juno Beach, Florida, United States in February 2014 on loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting success, hatching success, and emergence success. A before‐after‐control‐impact paired series design evaluated the difference in nesting success per week for the impact and control sites 4 years before (2010–2013) and 4 years after (2014–2017) the installation of the geocore. Neither loggerhead nor green turtle nesting success was significantly different after the installation of the geocore; however, when analyzing loggerhead crawls that came to within 5 m of the geotextile bags, nesting success decreased. Neither hatching nor emergence success was significantly different after the installation of the geocore for either species. Our results suggest that geocores may minimally affect loggerhead and green turtles and provide a suitable restoration technique for homeowners facing beach erosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
