Abstract: We present an analysis of the first two XRISM/Resolve spectra of the well-known Seyfert-1.5 active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 4151, obtained in 2023 December. Our work focuses on the nature of the narrow Fe K _α emission line at 6.4 keV, the strongest and most common X-ray line observed in AGN. The total line is found to consist of three components. Even the narrowest component of the line is resolved with evident Fe K _α _,1 (6.404 keV) and K _α _,2 (6.391 keV) contributions in a 2:1 flux ratio, fully consistent with neutral gas with negligible bulk velocity. Subject to the limitations of our models, the narrowest and intermediate-width components are consistent with emission from optically thin gas, suggesting that they arise in a disk atmosphere and/or wind. Modeling the three line components in terms of Keplerian broadening, they are readily associated with (1) the inner wall of the “torus,” (2) the innermost optical “broad-line region” (or “X-ray BLR”), and (3) a region with a radius of r ≃ 100 GM / c ^2 that may signal a warp in the accretion disk. Viable alternative explanations of the broadest component include a fast-wind component and/or scattering; however, we find evidence of variability in the narrow Fe K _α line complex on timescales consistent with small radii. The best-fit models are statistically superior to simple Voigt functions, but when fit with Voigt profiles the time-averaged lines are consistent with a projected velocity broadening of FWHM $\,=\,{1600}_{-200}^{+400}\,\mathrm{km}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$ . Overall, the resolution and sensitivity of XRISM show that the narrow Fe K line in AGN is an effective probe of all key parts of the accretion flow, as it is currently understood. We discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of AGN accretion, future studies with XRISM, and X-ray-based black hole mass measurements.

2. Phase-dependent Spectral Shape Changes in the Ultraluminous X-Ray Pulsar NGC 5907 ULX1

Abstract: The discovery of coherent pulsations from several ultraluminous X-ray pulsars (ULXPs) has provided direct evidence of a supercritical accretion flow. However, the geometrical structure of such an accretion flow onto the central neutron star remains poorly understood. NGC 5907 ULX1 is one of the most luminous ULXPs, with a luminosity exceeding 10 ^41 erg s ^−1 . Here we present a broadband X-ray study of this ULXP using the data from simultaneous observations with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR conducted in 2014 July. The phase-resolved spectra are well reproduced by a model consisting of a multicolor disk blackbody emission with a temperature gradient of p = 0.5 ( T ∝ r ^− ^p ) and a power law with an exponential cutoff. The disk component is phase-invariant and has an innermost temperature of ∼ 0.3 keV. Its normalization suggests a relatively low inclination angle of the disk, in contrast to the previous claims in other literature. The power-law component, attributed to the emission from the accretion flow inside the magnetosphere of the neutron star, indicates phase-dependent spectral shape changes; the spectrum is slightly harder in the pre-peak phase than in the post-peak phase. This implies that the magnetosphere has an asymmetric geometry around the magnetic axis and that hotter regions close to the magnetic pole become visible before the pulse peak.

3. Basic and Translational Research on Proteinase-Activated Receptors: Antagonism of the Proteinase-Activated Receptor 1 for Thrombin, a Novel Approach to Antiplatelet Therapy for Atherothrombotic Disease

Abstract: Atherothrombotic disease is a leading public health problem. Although current antiplatelet agents, such as aspirin and adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-receptor antagonists, reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with atherothrombotic disease, the residual risk for ischemic events remains substantial. The high residual risk despite dual antiplatelet therapy can be attributed to the fact that platelets possess multiple pathways of activation that are not all inhibited by aspirin and ADP-receptor antagonists. Among these, binding of thrombin to the proteinase-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) is the most potent platelet activation pathway. In addition, the PAR1 pathway does not appear to be essential for initiating hemostasis. Inhibition of the PAR1 receptor thus offers a possible new therapeutic approach with a potentially improved benefit-torisk profile for treatment of patients with atherothrombotic disease. Preclinical and clinical studies have confirmed that SCH 530348, a potent, orally active thrombin-receptor antagonist selective for PAR1, does not increase bleeding liability when added to dual antiplatelet therapy. Currently, two large ongoing phase 3 clinical trials are evaluating the efficacy and safety of SCH 530348 in combination with the standard of care in patients with acute coronary syndromes as well as for secondary prevention in patients with previous history of atherothrombotic disease. Abstract: The XRISM X-ray observatory will fly two advanced instruments, the Resolve high-resolution spectrometer and the Xtend wide-field imager. These instruments, particularly Resolve, pose calibration challenges due to the unprecedented combination of spectral resolution, spectral coverage, and effective area, combined with a need to characterize the imaging fidelity of the full instrument system to realize the mission’s ambitious science goals. We present the status of the XRISM in-flight calibration plan, building on lessons from Hitomi and other X-ray missions. We present a discussion of targets and observing strategies to address the needed calibration measurements, with a focus on developing methodologies to plan a thorough and flexible calibration campaign and provide insight on calibration systematic error. We also discuss observations that exploit Resolve’s spectral resolution to calibrate atomic codes, and cross-calibration between the XRISM instruments and with other observatories.

6. A Nucleosynthetic Origin for the Southwestern Fe-rich Structure in Kepler's Supernova Remnant

Abstract: Chandra X-ray observations of Kepler's supernova remnant indicate the existence of a high-speed Fe-rich ejecta structure in the southwestern region. We report strong K-shell emission from Fe-peak elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni), as well as Ca, in this Fe-rich structure, implying that those elements could be produced in the inner area of the exploding white dwarf. We found Ca/Fe, Cr/Fe, Mn/Fe, and Ni/Fe mass ratios of 1.0%–4.1%, 1.0%–4.6%, 1%–11%, and 2%–30%, respectively. In order to constrain the burning regime that could produce this structure, we compared these observed mass ratios with those in 18 one-dimensional Type Ia nucleosynthesis models (including both near-M Ch and sub-M Ch explosion models). The observed mass ratios agree well with those around the middle layer of incomplete Si burning in Type Ia nucleosynthesis models with a peak temperature of ~(5.0–5.3) × 10(exp 9) K and a high metallicity, Z > 0.0225. Based on our results, we infer the necessity for some mechanism to produce protruding Fe-rich clumps dominated by incomplete Si-burning products during the explosion. We also discuss the future perspectives of X-ray observations of Fe-rich structures in other Type Ia supernova remnants.

Abstract: The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. Abstract: Mechanisms of particle heating are crucial to understanding the shock physics in supernova remnants (SNRs). However, there has been little information on time variabilities of thermalized particles so far. Here, we present a discovery of a gradually-brightening thermal X-ray emission found in Chandra data of Tycho's SNR obtained during 2000--2015. The emission exhibits a knot-like feature (Knot1) with a diameter of $\simeq0.04$~pc located in the northwestern limb, where we also find localized H$\alpha$ filaments in an optical image taken with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2008. The model with the solar abundance reproduces the spectra of Knot1, suggesting that Knot1 originates from interstellar medium; this is the first detection of thermal X-ray emission from swept-up gas found in Tycho's SNR. Our spectral analysis indicates that the electron temperature of Knot1 has increased from $\sim0.30$ keV to $\sim0.69$ keV within the period between 2000 and 2015. These results lead us to ascribe the time-variable emission to a small dense clump recently heated by the forward shock at the location of Knot1. The electron-to-proton temperature ratio immediately downstream the shock ($\beta_{0}\equiv T_e/T_p$) is constrained to be $m_e/m_p\leq\beta_{0}\leq0.15$ to reproduce the data, indicating the collisionless electron heating with efficiency consistent with previous H$\alpha$ observations of Tycho and other SNRs with high shock velocities., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: In this multi-messenger astronomy era, all the observational probes are improving their sensitivities and overall performance. The Focusing on Relativistic universe and Cosmic Evolution (FORCE) mission, the product of a JAXA/NASA collaboration, will reach a 10 times higher sensitivity in the hard X-ray band ($E >$ 10~keV) in comparison with any previous hard X-ray missions, and provide simultaneous soft X-ray coverage. FORCE aims to be launched in the early 2030s, providing a perfect hard X-ray complement to the ESA flagship mission Athena. FORCE will be the most powerful X-ray probe for discovering obscured/hidden black holes and studying high energy particle acceleration in our Universe and will address how relativistic processes in the universe are realized and how these affect cosmic evolution. FORCE, which will operate over 1--79 keV, is equipped with two identical pairs of supermirrors and wideband X-ray imagers. The mirror and imager are connected by a high mechanical stiffness extensible optical bench with alignment monitor systems with a focal length of 12~m. 14. Probe for Type Ia Supernova Progenitor in Decihertz Gravitational Wave Astronomy

Abstract: It is generally believed that Type Ia supernovae are thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (WDs). However, there is currently no consensus regarding the events leading to the explosion. A binary WD (WD-WD) merger is a possible progenitor of Type Ia supernovae. Space-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors with considerable sensitivity in the deci-Hz range such as the DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) can observe WD-WD mergers directly. Therefore, access to the deci-Hz band of GWs would enable multi-messenger observations of Type Ia supernovae to determine their progenitor and explosion mechanism. In this paper, we consider the event rate of WD-WD mergers and minimum detection range to observe one WD-WD merger per year, using a nearby galaxy catalog and the relation between the Ia supernova and host galaxy. Furthermore, we calculate DECIGO's ability to localize WD-WD mergers and to determine the masses of binary mergers. We estimate that the deci-Hz GW observatory can detect GWs with amplitudes $h\sim10^{-20}[\rm Hz^{-1/2}]$ at 0.01-0.1 Hz, which is 1000 times higher than the detection limit of DECIGO. Assuming progenitors of Ia supernovae are merging WD-WD ($1M_{\odot}-0.8M_{\odot}$), DECIGO is expected to detect 6600 WD-WD mergers within $z=0.08$, and identify the host galaxy of such WD-WD mergers within $z\sim0.065$ using GW detection alone., Accepted to ApJ. comments welcome

Abstract: The X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) is the successor to the 2016 Hitomi mission that ended prematurely. Like Hitomi, the primary science goals are to examine astrophysical problems with precise highresolution X-ray spectroscopy. XRISM promises to discover new horizons in X-ray astronomy. XRISM carries a 6 x 6 pixelized X-ray micro-calorimeter on the focal plane of an X-ray mirror assembly and a co-aligned X-ray CCD camera that covers the same energy band over a large field of view. XRISM utilizes Hitomi heritage, but all designs were reviewed. The attitude and orbit control system were improved in hardware and software. The number of star sensors were increased from two to three to improve coverage and robustness in onboard attitude determination and to obtain a wider field of view sun sensor. The fault detection, isolation, and reconfiguration (FDIR) system was carefully examined and reconfigured. Together with a planned increase of ground support stations, the survivability of the spacecraft is significantly improved.

Abstract: We present XMM-Newton observations of N132D, the X-ray brightest supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) that enables high-resolution spectroscopy in the soft X-ray band. A dozen emission lines from L-shell transitions of various elements at intermediate charge states are newly detected in the RGS data integrating the ~200-ks on-axis observations. The 0.3-2.0-keV spectra require at least three components of thermal plasmas with different electron temperatures and indicate clear evidence of non-equilibrium ionization (NEI). Our detailed spectral diagnostics further reveal that the forbidden-to-resonance line ratios of O VII and Ne IX are both higher than expected for typical NEI plasmas. This enhancement could be attributed to either resonance scattering or emission induced by charge exchange in addition to a possible contribution from the superposition of multiple temperature components, although the lack of spatial information prevents us from concluding which is most likely., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

19. Discovery of a Highly Neutronized Ejecta Clump in the Type Ia Supernova Remnant 3C 397

Abstract: The supernova remnant (SNR) 3C 397 is thought to originate from a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosion of a near-Chandrasekhar-mass (M Ch) progenitor, based on the enhanced abundances of Mn and Ni revealed by previous X-ray study with Suzaku. Here we report follow-up XMM-Newton observations of this SNR, conducted with the aim of investigating the detailed spatial distribution of the Fe-peak elements. We have discovered an ejecta clump with extremely high abundances of Ti and Cr, in addition to Mn, Fe, and Ni, in the southern part of the SNR. The Fe mass of this ejecta clump is estimated to be ∼0.06 M ⊙, under the assumption of a typical Fe yield for SNe Ia (i.e., ∼0.8 M ⊙). The observed mass ratios among the Fe-peak elements and Ti require substantial neutronization that is achieved only in the innermost regions of a near-M Ch SN Ia with a central density of ρ c ∼ 5 × 109 g cm−3, significantly higher than typically assumed for standard near-M Ch SNe Ia (ρ c ∼ 2 × 109 g cm−3). The overproduction of the neutron-rich isotopes (e.g., 50Ti and 54Cr) is significant in such high-ρ c SNe Ia, with respect to the solar composition. Therefore, if 3C 397 is a typical high-ρ c near-M Ch SN Ia remnant, the solar abundances of these isotopes could be reproduced by the mixture of the high- and low-ρ c near-M Ch and sub-M Ch Type Ia events, with ≲20% being high-ρ c near-M Ch.

Abstract: The geometric structure of supernova remnants (SNR) provides a clue to unveiling the pre-explosion evolution of their progenitors. Here we present an X-ray study of N103B (0509-68.7), a Type Ia SNR in the Large Magellanic Cloud, that is known to be interacting with dense circumstellar matter (CSM). Applying our novel method for feature extraction to deep Chandra observations, we have successfully resolved the CSM, Fe-rich ejecta, and intermediate-mass element (IME) ejecta components, and revealed each of their spatial distribution. Remarkably, the IME ejecta component exhibits a double-ring structure, implying that the SNR expands into an hourglass-shape cavity and thus forms bipolar bubbles of the ejecta. This interpretation is supported by more quantitative spectroscopy that reveals a clear bimodality in the distribution of the ionization state of the IME ejecta. These observational results can be naturally explained if the progenitor binary system had formed a dense CSM torus on the orbital plane prior to the explosion, providing further evidence that the SNR N103B originates from a single-degenerate progenitor., 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters (originally submitted to ApJ, but offered a transfer to ApJL)

Analyzing X-ray data of Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR) obtained with Chandra in 2003, 2007, 2009, and 2015, we discover that the expansion before 2007 was substantially faster than radio measurements reported in the past decades and then rapidly decelerated during the last ~ 15 years. The result is well explained if the shock waves recently hit a wall of dense gas surrounding the SNR. Such a gas structure is in fact expected in the so-called single-degenerate scenario, in which the progenitor is a binary system consisting of a white dwarf and a stellar companion, whereas it is not generally predicted by a competing scenario, the double-degenerate scenario, which has a binary of two white dwarfs as the progenitor. Our result thus favors the former scenario. Abstract: Despite their importance, a detailed understanding of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) remains elusive. X-ray measurements of the element distributions in supernova remnants (SNRs) offer important clues for understanding the explosion and nucleosynthesis mechanisms for SNe Ia. However, it is challenging to observe the entire ejecta mass in X-rays for young SNRs, because the central ejecta may not have been heated by the reverse shock yet. Here we present over 200 kilosecond Chandra observations of the Type Ia SNR G344.7-0.1, whose age is old enough for the reverse shock to have reached the SNR center, providing an opportunity to investigate the distribution of the entire ejecta mass. We reveal a clear stratification of heavy elements with a centrally peaked distribution of the Fe ejecta surrounded by intermediate-mass elements (IMEs: Si, S, Ar Ca) with an arc-like structure. The centroid energy of the Fe K emission is marginally lower in the central Fe-rich region than in the outer IME-rich regions, suggesting that the Fe ejecta were shock-heated more recently. These results are consistent with the prediction for standard SN Ia models, where the heavier elements are synthesized in the interior of an exploding white dwarf. We find, however, that the peak location of the Fe K emission is slightly offset to the west with respect to the geometric center of the SNR. This apparent asymmetry is likely due to the inhomogeneous density distribution of the ambient medium, consistent with our radio observations of the ambient molecular and neutral gas.

Abstract: We report on the results of our detailed analyses on the peculiar recombining plasma of the supernova remnant (SNR) G359.1$-$0.5, and the interacting CO clouds. Combining {\it Chandra} and {\it Suzaku} data, we estimated the ionization state of the plasma with a careful treatment of the background spectrum. The average spectrum showed a remarkably large deviation of the electron temperature ($\sim$0.17 keV) from the initial temperature ($>$ 16 keV), indicating that the plasma is in a highly recombination-dominant state. On the other hand, the recombination timescale $({\it n_{\rm e} t})$ is comparable to those of the other recombining SNRs ($\sim4.2 \times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$ s). We also searched for spatial variation of the plasma parameters, but found no significant differences. Using $^{12}$CO($J$=2--1) data obtained with NANTEN2, we found a new, plausible candidate for the interacting CO cloud, which has a line-of-sight velocity of $\sim -$20 km s$^{-1}$. This indicates that the SNR is located at a distance of $\sim$4 kpc, which is the foreground of the Galactic center, as previously reported. The associated CO cloud does not show clear spatial coincidence with the nearby GeV/TeV emission, indicating that the origins of the GeV/TeV emission are likely unrelated to G359.1$-$0.5., 26 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: Type Ia supernovae originate from the explosion of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs in binary systems, but the exact nature of their progenitors remains elusive. The bulk properties of Type Ia supernova remnants, such as the radius and the centroid energy of the Fe K$\alpha$ blend in the X-ray spectrum, are determined by the properties of the supernova ejecta and the ambient medium. We model the interaction between Chandrasekhar and sub-Chandrasekhar models for Type Ia supernova ejecta and a range of uniform ambient medium densities in one dimension up to an age of 5000 years. We generate synthetic X-ray spectra from these supernova remnant models and compare their bulk properties at different expansion ages with X-ray observations from \textit{Chandra} and \textit{Suzaku}. We find that our models can successfully reproduce the bulk properties of most observed remnants, suggesting that Type Ia SN progenitors do not modify their surroundings significantly on scales of a few pc. Ambient medium density and expansion age are the main contributors to the diversity of the bulk properties in our models. Chandrasekhar and sub-Chandrasekhar progenitors make similar predictions for the bulk remnant properties, but detailed fits to X-ray spectra have the power to discriminate explosion energetics and progenitor scenarios., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, published in the ApJ

Abstract: The ejecta kinematics of supernova remnants (SNRs) is one of crucial clues to understand the explosion mechanism of type Ia supernovae (SNe). In particular, the kinematic asymmetry of iron-peak elements provides the key to understanding physical processes taking place in the core of the exploding white dwarfs (WDs) although it has been poorly understood by observations. In this paper, we show for the first time the asymmetric expansion structure in the line-of-sight direction of Fe ejecta in Kepler's SNR revealed by spectral and imaging analysis using the Chandra archival data. Abstract: The ASTRO-H mission was designed and developed through an international collaboration of JAXA, NASA, ESA, and the CSA. It was successfully launched on February 17, 2016, and then named Hitomi. During the in-orbit verification phase, the on-board observational instruments functioned as expected. The intricate coolant and refrigeration systems for soft X-ray spectrometer (SXS, a quantum micro-calorimeter) and soft X-ray imager (SXI, an X-ray CCD) also functioned as expected. However, on March 26, 2016, operations were prematurely terminated by a series of abnormal events and mishaps triggered by the attitude control system. These errors led to a fatal event: the loss of the solar panels on the Hitomi mission. The X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (or, XARM) is proposed to regain the key scientific advances anticipated by the international collaboration behind Hitomi. XARM will recover this science in the shortest time possible by focusing on one of the main science goals of Hitomi,“Resolving astrophysical problems by precise high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy”.1 This decision was reached after evaluating the performance of the instruments aboard Hitomi and the mission’s initial scientific results, and considering the landscape of planned international X-ray astrophysics missions in 2020’s and 2030’s. Hitomi opened the door to high-resolution spectroscopy in the X-ray universe. It revealed a number of discrepancies between new observational results and prior theoretical predictions. Yet, the resolution pioneered by Hitomi is also the key to answering these and other fundamental questions. The high spectral resolution realized by XARM will not offer mere refinements; rather, it will enable qualitative leaps in astrophysics and plasma physics. XARM has therefore been given a broad scientific charge: “Revealing material circulation and energy transfer in cosmic plasmas and elucidating evolution of cosmic structures and objects”. To fulfill this charge, four categories of science objectives that were defined for Hitomi will also be pursued by XARM; these include (1) Structure formation of the Universe and evolution of clusters of galaxies; (2) Circulation history of baryonic matters in the Universe; (3) Transport and circulation of energy in the Universe; (4) New science with unprecedented high resolution X-ray spectroscopy. In order to achieve these scientific objectives, XARM will carry a 6 × 6 pixelized X-ray micro-calorimeter on the focal plane of an X-ray mirror assembly, and an aligned X-ray CCD camera covering the same energy band and a wider field of view. This paper introduces the science objectives, mission concept, and observing plan of XARM.

Abstract: The mixed morphology class of supernova remnants has centrally peaked X-ray emission along with a shell-like morphology in radio emission. White & Long proposed that these remnants are evolving in a cloudy medium wherein the clouds are evaporated via thermal conduction once being overrun by the expanding shock. Their analytical model made detailed predictions regarding temperature, density and emission profiles as well as shock evolution. We present numerical hydrodynamical models in 2D and 3D including thermal conduction, testing the White & Long model and presenting results for the evolution and emission from remnants evolving in a cloudy medium. We find that, while certain general results of the White & Long model hold, such as the way the remnants expand and the flattening of the X-ray surface brightness distribution, in detail there are substantial differences. In particular we find that the X-ray luminosity is dominated by emission from shocked cloud gas early on, leading to a bright peak which then declines and flattens as evaporation becomes more important. In addition, the effects of thermal conduction on the intercloud gas, which is not included in the White & Long model, are important and lead to further flattening of the X-ray brightness profile as well as lower X-ray emission temperatures., 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: We present the first three-dimensional measurements of the velocity of various ejecta knots in Tycho's supernova remnant, known to result from a Type Ia explosion. Chandra X-ray observations over a 12-year baseline from 2003 to 2015 allow us to measure the proper motion of nearly 60 "tufts" of Si-rich ejecta, giving us the velocity in the plane of the sky. For the line of sight velocity, we use two different methods: a non-equilibrium ionization model fit to the strong Si and S lines in the 1.2-2.8 keV regime, and a fit consisting of a series of Gaussian lines. These methods give consistent results, allowing us to determine the red or blue shift of each of the knots. Assuming a distance of 3.5 kpc, we find total velocities that range from 2400 to 6600 km s$^{-1}$, with a mean of 4430 km s$^{-1}$. We find several regions where the ejecta knots have overtaken the forward shock. These regions have proper motions in excess of 6000 km s$^{-1}$. Some Type Ia supernova explosion models predict a velocity asymmetry in the ejecta. We find no such velocity asymmetries in Tycho, and discuss our findings in light of various explosion models, favoring those delayed detonation models with relatively vigorous and symmetrical deflagrations. Finally, we compare measurements with models of the remnant's evolution that include both smooth and clumpy ejecta profiles, finding that both ejecta profiles can be accommodated by the observations., Accepted for publication in ApJ. Abstract: A man in his 50 s, who had undergone subtotal stomach-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy with modified Child's reconstruction for pancreatic cancer 8 months back, was hospitalized because of vomiting and difficulty in feeding.Radiological and endoscopic studies revealed a malignant obstruction of the gastrojejunostomy site due to peritoneal recurrence of the cancer.Although a self-expandable metallic stent(SEMS)was placed in the anastomotic site, it slipped back into the stomach 3 days later.It was suggested that the migration was caused by antiperistalsis, because the SEMS was placed in the afferent loop.Although the SEMS was required to be placed in concordance with the peristaltic direction, it was impossible to pass a guidewire directly from the stomach into the efferent loop.Therefore, the guidewire was placed antidromically through a narrow site from the distal portion of the efferent loop via Braun anastomosis, and the SEMS was subsequently placed without any complication.This allowed the patient to maintain oral intake throughout his remaining life.Our antidromic approach for SEMS placement could be beneficial if performing a standard procedure is difficult.

Abstract: We describe the tools and the underlying methods and principles for generating the spectral response functions for the four imaging instruments that were flown on the Hitomi x-ray astronomy satellite [Soft X-ray Spectrometer, or SXS; Soft X-ray Imager, or SXI, and two Hard X-ray Imagers, or HXI]. In essence, the spectral response function is a temporally and spatially averaged effective area and line-spread-function. For model-fitting x-ray spectra from an instrument, the spectral response function encapsulates the end-to-end physics of the entire system from telescope to detector, and also includes satellite attitude drift, exposure corrections, and in the case of the HXIs, drift in the telescope/detector alignment system. Accuracy in the construction of the spectral response functions is, therefore, critical to maximize the science return from the data.

Abstract: Astro-H (Hitomi) is an X-ray/Gamma-ray mission led by Japan with international participation, launched on February 17, 2016. The payload consists of four different instruments (SXS, SXI, HXI and SGD) that operate simultaneously to cover the energy range from 0.3 keV up to 600 keV. This paper presents the analysis software and the data processing pipeline created to calibrate and analyze the Hitomi science data along with the plan for the archive and user support. These activities have been a collaborative effort shared between scientists and software engineers working in several institutes in Japan and USA.

Abstract: X-ray observations of supernova remnants (SNRs) allow us to investigate the chemical inhomogeneity of ejecta, offering unique insight into the nucleosynthesis in supernova explosions. Here we present detailed imaging and spectroscopic studies of the "Fe knot" located along the eastern rim of the Type Ia SNR Tycho (SN 1572) using Suzaku and Chandra long-exposure data. Surprisingly, the Suzaku spectrum of this knot shows no emission from Cr, Mn, or Ni, which is unusual for the Fe-rich regions in this SNR. Within the framework of the canonical delayed-detonation models for SN Ia, the observed mass ratios M_Cr/M_Fe < 0.023, M_Mn/M_Fe < 0.012, and M_Ni/M_Fe < 0.029 (at 90% confidence) can only be achieved for a peak temperature of (5.3-5.7) x 10^9 K and a neutron excess of < 2.0 x 10^-3. These constraints rule out the deep, dense core of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf as the origin of the Fe knot, and favors either incomplete Si burning or the alpha-rich freeze-out regime, probably close to their boundary. Abstract: The Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission is the sixth Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite developed by a large international collaboration, including Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe. The mission aimed to provide the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E > 2 keV, using a microcalorimeter instrument, and to cover a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. After a successful launch on 2016 February 17, the spacecraft lost its function on 2016 March 26, but the commissioning phase for about a month provided valuable information on the on-board instruments and the spacecraft system, including astrophysical results obtained from first light observations. The paper describes the Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission, its capabilities, the initial operation, and the instruments/spacecraft performances confirmed during the commissioning operations for about a month.

Abstract: We report the discovery of recombining plasmas in three supernova remnants (SNRs) with the Suzaku X-ray astronomy satellite. During SNR's evolution, the expanding supernova ejecta and the ambient matter are compressed and heated by the reverse and forward shocks to form an X-ray emitting hot plasma. Since ionization proceeds slowly compared to shock heating, most young or middle-aged SNRs have ionizing (underionized) plasmas. Owing to high sensitivity of Suzaku, however, we have detected radiative recombination continua (RRCs) from the SNRs IC 443, W49B, and G359.1-0.5. The presence of the strong RRC is the definitive evidence that the plasma is recombining (overionized). As a possible origin of the overionization, an interaction between the ejecta and dense circumstellar matter is proposed; the highly ionized gas was made at the initial phase of the SNR evolution in dense regions, and subsequent rapid adiabatic expansion caused sudden cooling of the electrons. The analysis on the full X-ray band spectrum of IC 443, which is newly presented in this paper, provides a consistent picture with this scenario. Abstract: We report on results of imaging and spectral analysis of the supernova remnant (SNR) RCW 86 observed with Suzaku. The SNR is known to exhibit K-shell emission of low ionized Fe, possibly originating from supernova ejecta. We revealed the global distribution of the Fe-rich plasma in the entire remnant, for the first time; the Fe-K emission was clearly detected from the west, north, and south regions, in addition to the X-ray brighter shells of southwest and northeast, where the presence of the Fe-rich ejecta has already been reported. The spectrum of each region is well represented by a three-component model consisting of low- and high-temperature thermal plasmas and a non-thermal emission. The lower-temperature component, with elemental abundances of near the solar values, likely originates from the forward shocked interstellar medium, while the Fe-rich ejecta is described by the hotter plasma. From the morphologies of the forward and reverse shocks in the west region, the total ejecta mass is estimated to be 1-2M_sun for the typical explosion energy of ~ 1 x 10^{51} erg. The integrated flux of the Fe-K emission from the entire SNR roughly corresponds to a total Fe mass of about 1M_sun. Both of these estimates suggest a Type Ia supernova origin of this SNR. We also find possible evidence of an Fe-rich clump located beyond the forward-shock front in the north rim, which is reminiscent of ejecta knots observed in the Tycho and Vela SNRs., Comment: Published by PASJ

Abstract: Supernova remnants (SNRs) are the primary candidate of Galactic cosmic-ray accelerators. It is still an open issue when and how young SNRs, which typically exhibit strong synchrotron X-rays and GeV and TeV gamma-rays, undergo the state transition to middle-aged SNRs dominated by thermal X-rays and GeV gamma-rays. The SNR N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud is an ideal target to study such a transition, exhibiting bright X-rays and gamma-rays, and with the expected age of ~2500 yrs. In this paper we present results of NuSTAR and Suzaku spectroscopy. We reveal that N132D has a nearly equilibrium plasma with a temperature of > 5 keV or a recombining plasma with a lower temperature (~1.5 keV) and a recombining timescale (net) of 8.8 (7.0--10.0)e12 cm^-3s. Together with the center filled morphology observed in the iron K line image, our results suggest that N132D is now at transition stage from a young SNR to middle-aged. We have constrained the tight upper-limit of nonthermal X-rays. Bright gamma-rays compared to faint nonthermal X-rays suggest that the gamma-rays are hadronic in origin. The spectral energy distribution from radio to gamma-rays shows a proton cut-off energy of ~30 TeV. These facts confirm that N132D is in the transition from young to middle-aged SNR. Abstract: Aim: A previous phase 2 study of patients undergoing non-urgent PCI treated with SCH530348 plus aspirin and clopidogrel tended to reduce MACE without increased bleeding. This study evaluated the safety of SCH530348 in Japanese patients with NSTE ACS.Methods: Subjects (117), in whom PCI was planned, received standard-of-care (aspirin, ticlopidine, and heparin) and were randomized 4:1 to receive either SCH530348 (20 or 40 mg loading dose followed by 1 mg/d or 2.5 mg/d for 60 days) or placebo. The key safety endpoint was TIMI major and minor bleeding in the PCI cohort (n=92). The key exploratory efficacy endpoint was MACE and death within 60 days. Addition of SCH530348 to standard-of-care did not significantly increase the rate of TIMI major and minor bleeding (or non-TIMI bleeding) in the primary cohort.Results: Incidence (non-MACE) and discontinuation of AEs were similar across groups. PCI subjects treated with SCH530348 plus standard-of-care experienced a significant reduction in periprocedural MI compared with standard-of-care alone (16.9% vs 42.9%, respectively; p=0.013). There were no deaths or any other MACE.Conclusion: SCH530348 added to standard-of-care did not result in excess bleeding in Japanese subjects with NSTE ACS but significantly reduced the incidence of periprocedural MI in subjects undergoing urgent PCI.

Abstract: We present a hard X-ray spectrum of unprecedented quality of the Galactic supernova remnant W49B obtained with the Suzaku satellite. The spectrum exhibits an unusual structure consisting of a saw-edged bump above 8 keV. This bump cannot be explained by any combination of high-temperature plasmas in ionization equilibrium. We firmly conclude that this bump is caused by the strong radiative recombination continuum (RRC) of iron, detected for the first time in a supernova remnant. The electron temperature derived from the bremsstrahlung continuum shape and the slope of the RRC is 1.5 keV. On the other hand, the ionization temperature derived from the observed intensity ratios between the RRC and K-alpha lines of iron is 2.7 keV. These results indicate that the plasma is in a highly overionized state. Volume emission measures independently determined from the fluxes of the thermal and RRC components are consistent with each other, suggesting the same origin of these components., Comment: 5 pages,4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Abstract: Atherothrombotic disease is a leading public health problem. Although current antiplatelet agents, such as aspirin and adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-receptor antagonists, reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with atherothrombotic disease, the residual risk for ischemic events remains substantial. The high residual risk despite dual antiplatelet therapy can be attributed to the fact that platelets possess multiple pathways of activation that are not all inhibited by aspirin and ADP-receptor antagonists. Among these, binding of thrombin to the proteinase-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) is the most potent platelet activation pathway. In addition, the PAR1 pathway does not appear to be essential for initiating hemostasis. Inhibition of the PAR1 receptor thus offers a possible new therapeutic approach with a potentially improved benefit-torisk profile for treatment of patients with atherothrombotic disease. Preclinical and clinical studies have confirmed that SCH 530348, a potent, orally active thrombin-receptor antagonist selective for PAR1, does not increase bleeding liability when added to dual antiplatelet therapy. Currently, two large ongoing phase 3 clinical trials are evaluating the efficacy and safety of SCH 530348 in combination with the standard of care in patients with acute coronary syndromes as well as for secondary prevention in patients with previous history of atherothrombotic disease.
