Abstract

KAGRA is a gravitational-wave (GW) detector constructed in Japan with two unique key features: It was constructed underground, and the test-mass mirrors are cooled to cryogenic temperatures. These features are not included in other kilometer-scale detectors but will be adopted in future detectors such as the Einstein Telescope. KAGRA performed its first joint observation run with GEO600 in 2020. In this observation, the sensitivity of KAGRA to GWs was inferior to that of other kilometer-scale detectors such as LIGO and Virgo. However, further upgrades to the detector are ongoing to reach the sensitivity for detecting GWs in the next observation run, which is scheduled for 2022. In this article, the current situation, sensitivity, and future perspectives are reviewed.

Abstract

On January 15, 2022, at 04:14:45 (UTC), the Hunga Tonga-Funga Ha’apai, a submarine volcano in the Tongan archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean, erupted and generated global seismic, shock, and electromagnetic waves, which also reached Japan, situated more than 8000 km away. KAGRA is a gravitational wave telescope located in an underground facility in Kamioka, Japan. It has a wide variety of auxiliary sensors to monitor environmental disturbances that obstruct the observation of gravitational waves. The effects of the volcanic eruption were observed by these environmental sensors both inside and outside of the underground facility. In particular, the shock waves made it possible to evaluate the transfer functions from the air pressure wave in the atmosphere to the underground environmental disturbances (air pressure and seismic motion).

3. A nonparametric method to evaluate significance of events in search for gravitational waves with false discovery rate

Abstract

During recent observation runs by LIGO and Virgo, tens of gravitational wave events have been observed. The gravitational wave network of LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA is planning longer observation runs with improved sensitivity in the future. In this situation, it is important to evaluate the significance of each event with reliable methods since we expect, as the observation period becomes longer and as the sensitivity of the detector improves, we expect to detect more false positive events with a given threshold for the false alarm rate. In this paper, we introduce q-value which was first introduced by Storey[1], and is interpreted as False Discovery Rate (FDR). We introduce an algorithm to evaluate FDR in a non-parametric way, and apply it to publically available results of the analysis of the advanced LIGO O1 data, and find that we can obtain a better significance for GW151012 which has the lowest significance in the O1 events. For other events, we obtain consistent results already obtained by LIGO and Virgo.

Abstract

KAGRA is a 3-km cryogenic interferometric gravitational wave telescope located at an underground site in Japan. In order to achieve its target sensitivity, the relative positions of the mirrors of the interferometer must be finely adjusted with attached actuators. We have developed a model to simulate the length control loops of the KAGRA interferometer with realistic suspension responses and various noises for mirror actuation. Using our model, we have designed the actuation parameters to have sufficient force range to acquire lock as well as to control all the length degrees of freedom without introducing excess noise., 21 pages, 7 figures (typo in p.12 on magnetic field gradient fixed for v3)

We apply MIC to the scattered light noise correlated between the seismic activity and the strain signal, which limited the sensitivity of the Virgo detector during the first science run. The results show that MIC can find nonlinearly correlated noise more efficiently than the Pearson correlation method. When the data is linearly correlated, the efficiency of the Pearson method and MIC is comparable. On the other hand, when the data is known to be nonlinearly correlated, MIC finds the correlation while the Pearson method fails completely.

Abstract

<< 10 1 , assuming uniform distribution of cosmic string in isotropic direction, at time epochs of loop forming and GW emission according to the universe model. We calculate waveform numerically in time domain of each GW from these distributed cosmic strings, and superpose waveforms to generate continuously observational signal on the ground-based GW detectors, including detector responses. We consider data analysis for stochastic background type gravitational wave signatures in the observation.

Among the noise sources to be hunted, sources of nonlinearly correlated noise, such up-conversion noise, are hard to find and can limit the sensitivity of gravitational wave searches with advanced detectors.
