Search

We observed a stellar occultation by (3200) Phaethon, which occurred in western Japan on 2021 October 3 (UTC). This observation was requested by the DESTINY+ mission team, which plans to conduct a flyby of asteroid Phaethon in 2028. Overall, this research effort contributes towards a large-scale observation campaign with a total of 72 observers observing from western Japan to southern Korea. 36 stations were established, and stellar occultation by the asteroid Phaethon was detected in 18 of them. This is the first time that this many multiple chord observations have been made for such a small asteroid (it has a diameter of 5–6 km). Observational reductions show that the apparent cross-section of Phaethon at the time of the occultation could be approximated using an ellipse with a major diameter of 6.12 ± 0.07 km and a minor diameter of 4.14 ± 0.07 km, and a position angle of 117.°4 ± 1.°5. As can be seen from the small error bars of the fitted ellipse, we have succeeded in estimating the shape and size of the asteroid with an extremely high degree of accuracy. Our observation results, together with other observations, will be used to create a 3D model of Phaethon and to improve its orbit. The instruments that we used for this observation are commonly used by many amateur astronomers in Japan for occultation observations and are not difficult to obtain. This paper describes the method and results of our observations using a CMOS camera and a GPS module, so that many people can participate in occultation observations in the future.

BL Lacertae (BL Lac) was in an unprecedented bright state since 2020 August. We have conducted long-term photometric and polarimetric observations of BL Lac in optical and near-infrared (NIR) bands using the Kanata telescope in the Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory. BL Lac had simultaneously brightened in the NIR, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands during the brightening period. There were two peaks of brightness in the optical and NIR bands. The degree of polarization and electric-vector position angle (EVPA) were also found to have fluctuated in the optical and NIR bands. A bluer-when-brighter trend was observed between the optical and NIR bands during the entire period of our observation. Furthermore, during the first bright period, the EVPA became parallel to the position angle of the jet. On the other hand, the polarization during the second brightening showed a different behavior from that during the first brightening. The brightenings can be explained by a combination of a shock acceleration in which a shock was generated with the perpendicular-direction shock front of the jet and a variation of the inclination angle.

It is of common consensus that the synchrotron emission is responsible for the low frequency peak, while the origin of the high frequency hump is still debated. The analysis of X-rays and their polarization can provide a valuable tool to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the origin of high-energy emission of blazars. We report the first observations of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, from which an upper limit to the polarization degree ΠX < 12.6% was found in the 2–8 keV band. We contemporaneously measured the polarization in radio, infrared, and optical wavelengths. Our multiwavelength polarization analysis disfavors a significant contribution of proton-synchrotron radiation to the X-ray emission at these epochs. Instead, it supports a leptonic origin for the X-ray emission in BL Lac. © 2022. The Author(s). The investigation of asteroids near the Sun is important for understanding the final evolutionary stage of primitive solar system objects. A near-Sun asteroid, (155140) 2005 UD, has orbital elements similar to those of (3200) Phaethon (the target asteroid for the JAXA's $DESTINY^+$ mission). We conducted photometric and polarimetric observations of 2005 UD and found that this asteroid exhibits a polarization phase curve similar to that of Phaethon over a wide range of observed solar phase angles ($ \alpha = 20 - 105^\circ $) but different from those of (101955) Bennu and (162173) Ryugu (asteroids composed of hydrated carbonaceous materials). At a low phase angle ($\alpha \lesssim 30^\circ$), the polarimetric properties of these near-Sun asteroids (2005 UD and Phaethon) are consistent with anhydrous carbonaceous chondrites, while the properties of Bennu are consistent with hydrous carbonaceous chondrites. We derived the geometric albedo, $ p_\mathrm{V} \sim 0.1 $ (in the range of 0.088-0.109); mean $ V $-band absolute magnitude, $ H_\mathrm{V} = 17.54 \pm 0.02 $; synodic rotational period, $ T_\mathrm{rot} = 5.2388 \pm 0.0022 $ hours (the two-peaked solution is assumed); and effective mean diameter, $ D_\mathrm{eff} = 1.32 \pm 0.06 $ km. At large phase angles ($ \alpha \gtrsim 80^\circ$), the polarization phase curve are likely explained by the dominance of large grains and the paucity of small micron-sized grains. We conclude that the polarimetric similarity of these near-Sun asteroids can be attributed to the intense solar heating of carbonaceous materials around their perihelia, where large anhydrous particles with small porosity could be produced by sintering., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS)

In this paper we describe the Kottamia Faint Imaging Spectro-Polarimeter (KFISP) that has been recently developed and designed to be mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the 1.88 m telescope at Kottamia Astronomical Observatory (KAO), Egypt. The optical design of KFISP is developed such that it can be used in various modes of operation. These are: direct imaging, spectroscopic, polarimetric imaging, and spectro-polarimetric. The KFISP is an all-refractive design to meet the polarimetric requirements and includes a focal reducer with a corrector section, collimator section, parallel beam section (containing various imaging components), and camera section. The corrector section gives an unvignetted Field-of-View of 8ʹ × 8ʹ and the collimator section has a focal length of 305 mm and matches the focal ratio of the input beam. The parallel beam section is 200 mm long and near the middle of it there is an image of the telescope pupil. The camera section includes 5 elements and has a focal length of 154.51 mm which gives an instrument effective final focal ratio of f/6.14 (acting as a telescope focal reducer of 1:2 ratio). The KFISP contains an internal calibration system which hosts the calibration light injection system, an integrating sphere equipped with the required calibration light sources. The opto-mechanical parts of KFISP contain a double-layered carbon fiber strut structure and comprises its subsystems of slit and guider assemblies, filter wheel drawer, grism wheel drawer, polarimetric components cubical box, and CCD camera which is integrated with camera optics. The CCD camera has 2048 \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\times$$\end{document}× 2048 pixels with 13.5-micron square pixel size. The camera is cooled by liquid Nitrogen and is fixed to the KFISP through the integrated camera lens. The KFISP has been fully commissioned, mounted and is being tested in all modes of operation. In this paper we introduce the ambitious scientific goals, the optical setups of KFISP, its opto-mechanical implementation and the performance analysis of the instrument. In addition, we describe the camera system, its performance, and its software control. Finally, we present a sample of the first light observations obtained from the instrument.

A gravitational wave event, S190510g, which was classified as a binary-neutron-star coalescence at the time of preliminary alert, was detected by LIGO/Virgo collaboration on 2019 May 10. At 1.7 hours after the issue of its preliminary alert, we started a target-of-opportunity imaging observation in the Y band to search for its optical counterpart using the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru Telescope. The observation covers a 118.8 deg2 sky area corresponding to $11.6\%$ confidence in the localization skymap released in the preliminary alert and $1.2\%$ in the updated skymap. We divided the observed area into two fields based on the availability of HSC reference images. For the fields with the HSC reference images, we applied an image subtraction technique; for the fields without the HSC reference images, we sought individual HSC images by matching a catalog of observed objects with the PS1 catalog. The search depth is 22.28 mag in the former method and the limit of search depth is 21.3 mag in the latter method. Subsequently, we performed visual inspection and obtained 83 candidates using the former method and 50 candidates using the latter method. Since we only have the one-day photometric data, we evaluated the probability of candidates being located inside the 3D skymap by estimating their distances with photometry of associated extended objects. We found three candidates are likely located inside the 3D skymap and concluded they could be a counterpart of S190510g, while most of the 133 candidates were likely to be supernovae because the number density of candidates was consistent with the expected number of supernova detections. By comparing our observational depth with a light-curve model of such a kilonova reproducing AT2017gfo, we show that early deep observations with the Subaru/HSC can capture the rising phase of the blue component of a kilonova at the estimated distance of S190510g (∼230 Mpc).

We have obtained simultaneous and continuous photo-polarization observations of the blazar BL Lacertae in optical and near-infrared (NIR) bands during a historical outburst from 2020 to 2021. In total, fourteen nights of observations were performed where ten observations show microvariability on timescales of a few minutes to several hours. This suggests a compact emission region, and the timescales are difficult to explain by a one-zone shock-in-jet model. Moreover, we found significant differences in the polarization degree (PD) and angle between optical and NIR bands. Nine nights showed a PD in the optical band that is greater than or equal to that in the NIR band, which can be explained by either a shock-in-jet model or the Turbulent Extreme Multi-Zone (TEMZ) model. On the other hand, five nights showed higher PD in a NIR band than an optical band, which cannot be explained by simple shock-in-jet models nor the simple TEMZ model. The observed timescales and wavelength dependency of the PD and polarization angle suggest the existence of complicated multiple emission regions such as an irregular TEMZ model., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory Scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration (LVC) sent out 56 gravitational-wave (GW) notices during the third observing run (O3). Japanese collaboration for Gravitational wave ElectroMagnetic follow-up (J-GEM) performed optical and near-infrared observations to identify and observe an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. We constructed web-based system which enabled us to obtain and share information of candidate host galaxies for the counterpart, and status of our observations. Candidate host galaxies were selected from the GLADE catalog with a weight based on the three-dimensional GW localization map provided by LVC. We conducted galaxy-targeted and wide-field blind surveys, real-time data analysis, and visual inspection of observed galaxies. We performed galaxy-targeted follow-ups to 23 GW events during O3, and the maximum probability covered by our observations reached to 9.8%. Among them, we successfully started observations for 10 GW events within 0.5 days after the detection. This result demonstrates that our follow-up observation has a potential to constrain EM radiation models for a merger of binary neutron stars at a distance of up to $\sim$100~Mpc with a probability area of $\leq$ 500~deg$^2$., 25 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, published at https://academic.oup.com/ptep/article/2021/5/05A104/6122445

Astronomical polarimetric observation is one of the important methods in modern astrophysics research field. In the infrared bands, polarimetric observation is one effective tool to study the evolution and formation of star, and reveal multiband radiation characteristics of high-energy celestial bodies and other aspects. This paper will introduce the system composition, operating principle, calibration and data analysis method of polarimetric observation using HONIR camera on Kanata telescope. We also present part of the analysis results of AA Tau with polarimetric observation, which is one young classical T Tauri star.

We present optical and near-infrared observations of SN 2019ehk, which was initially reported as a Type Ib supernova (SN). We show that it evolved to a Ca-rich transient according to its spectral properties and evolution in late phases. However, it shows a few properties distinct from those of the canonical Ca-rich transients: a short-duration first peak in the light curve, high peak luminosity, and association with a star-forming environment. Indeed, some of these features are shared with iPTF14gqr and iPTF16hgs, which are candidates for a special class of core-collapse SNe: the so-called ultra-stripped envelope SNe, i.e., a relatively low-mass He (or C+O) star explosion in a binary as a precursor of short-period double neutron star (NS) binaries. The estimated ejecta mass (0.4M (circle dot)) and explosion energy (1.7 x 10(50) erg) are consistent with this scenario. The analysis of the first peak suggests the existence of dense circumstellar material in the vicinity of the progenitor, implying a CCSN origin. Based on this analysis, we suggest SN 2019ehk is another candidate for a low-mass He star explosion. It might create a double NS binary, but with a wide separation. These candidates for low-mass stripped envelope SNe, including ultra-stripped envelope SN candidates, seem to form a subpopulation among Ca-rich transients, associated with young population. The asteroid exploration project "Hayabusa2" has successfully returned samples from the asteroid (162173) Ryugu. In this study, we measured the linear polarization degrees of Ryugu using four ground-based telescopes from 2020 September 27 to December 25, covering a wide-phase angle (Sun-target-observer's angle) range from 28$^\circ$ to 104$^\circ$. We found that the polarization degree of Ryugu reached 53$\%$ around a phase angle of 100$^\circ$, the highest value among all asteroids and comets thus far reported. The high polarization degree of Ryugu can be attributed to the scattering properties of its surface layers, in particular the relatively small contribution of multiply-scattered light. Our polarimetric results indicate that Ryugu's surface is covered with large grains. On the basis of a comparison with polarimetric measurements of pulverized meteorites, we can infer the presence of submillimeter-sized grains on the surface layer of Ryugu. We also conjecture that this size boundary represents the grains that compose the aggregate. It is likely that a very brittle structure has been lost in the recovered samples, although they may hold a record of its evolution. We report photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing SU UMa-type dwarf nova ASASSN-18aan. We observed the 2018 superoutburst with 2.3 mag brightening and found the orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}$) to be 0.149454(3) d, or 3.59 hr. This is longward of the period gap, establishing ASASSN-18aan as one of a small number of long-$P_{\rm orb}$ SU UMa-type dwarf novae. The estimated mass ratio, ($q=M_2/M_1 = 0.278(1)$), is almost identical to the upper limit of tidal instability by the 3:1 resonance. From eclipses, we found that the accretion disk at the onset of the superoutburst may reach the 3:1 resonance radius, suggesting that the superoutburst of ASASSN-18aan results from the tidal instability. Considering the case of long-$P_{\rm orb}$ WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, we suggest that the tidal dissipation at the tidal truncation radius is enough to induce SU UMa-like behavior in relatively high-$q$ systems such as SU UMa-type dwarf novae, but that this is no longer effective in low-$q$ systems such as WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. The unusual nature of the system extends to the secondary star, for which we find a spectral type of G9, much earlier than typical for the orbital period, and a secondary mass $M_2$ of around 0.18 M$_{\odot}$, smaller than expected for the orbital period and the secondary's spectral type. We also see indications of enhanced sodium abundance in the secondary's spectrum. Anomalously hot secondaries are seen in a modest number of other CVs and related objects. These systems evidently underwent significant nuclear evolution before the onset of mass transfer. In the case of ASASSN-18aan, this apparently resulted in a mass ratio lower than typically found at the system's $P_{\rm orb}$, which may account for the occurrence of a superoutburst at this relatively long period., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

HiZ-GUNDAM is a future satellite mission which will lead the time-domain astronomy and the multi-messenger astronomy through observations of high-energy transient phenomena. A mission concept of HiZ-GUNDAM was approved by ISAS/JAXA, and it is one of the future satellite candidates of JAXA’s medium-class mission. We are in pre-phase A (before pre-project) and elaborating the mission concept, mission/system requirements for the launch in the late 2020s. The main themes of HiZ-GUNDAM mission are (1) exploration of the early universe with high-redshift gamma-ray bursts, and (2) contribution to the multi-messenger astronomy. HiZ-GUNDAM has two kinds of mission payload. The wide field X-ray monitors consist of Lobster Eye optics array and focal imaging sensor, and monitor ~1 steradian field of view in 0.5 – 4 keV energy range. The near infrared telescope has an aperture size 30 cm in diameter, and simultaneously observes four wavelength bands between 0.5 – 2.5 μm. In this paper, we introduce the mission overview of HiZ-GUNDAM.

We describe the Kottamia Faint Imaging Spectro-Polarimeter (KFISP) that has been recently developed and designed to be mounted to the Cassegrain focus of the 1.88m telescope at Kottamia Astronomical Observatory (KAO), Egypt. The optical design of KFISP is developed such that it can be used in various modes of operation. These are: direct imaging, spectroscopic (low and medium resolution), polarimetric imaging, and spectro-polarimetric. The KFISP is an all-refractive design to meet the polarimetric requirements and includes a focal reducer with a corrector section, collimator section, parallel beam section (containing various imaging components), and camera section. The corrector section gives an unvignetted Field-of-View (FoV) of 8ʹ × 8ʹ and the collimator section has a focal length of 305 mm and matches the focal ratio of the input beam. The parallel beam section is 200 mm long and near the middle of it there is an image of the telescope pupil. The camera section includes 5 elements and has a focal length of 154.51 mm which gives an instrument effective final focal ratio of f/6.14 (acting as a telescope focal reducer of 1:2 ratio). The KFISP contains an internal calibration system which hosts the calibration light injection system, an integrating sphere equipped with the required calibration light sources. The opto-mechanical parts of KFISP contain double-layered carbon fiber strut structure and comprises its subsystems of slit and guider assemblies, filter wheel drawer, grism wheel drawer, polarimetric components cubical box, and CCD camera which is integrated with camera optics. The KFISP has been fully commissioned, mounted and is being tested in all modes of operation. In this paper we introduce the ambitious scientific goals, the optical setups of KFISP, its opto-mechanical implementation and the performance analysis of the instrument. In addition, we will present sample of the first light observations obtained from the instrument.

We describe a development and performance evaluations for Mulit-wavelength SimultaneouS High throughput Imager and polarimeter called as ”MuSaSHI”. The science drivers are high-precision muticolor photometric stud- ies of time-variable astronomical phenomena such as variable stars, transiting planets and asteroids. MuSaSHI is designed to be mounted on the SaCRA telescope at Saitama University, dedicated for relatively wide field imaging and polarimetry in the three optical bands (r: 550 to 680 nm, i: 700 to 810 nm, z: 820 to 1000 nm) . The instrument is equipped with three Back-Illuminated thinned e2v CCDs which provide simultaneous r, i, z images having a field of view of 12.8 x 12.4 arcmin with a pixel scale of 0.73 arcsec. The optical system of MuSaSHI is composed of only two dichroic mirrors and three bandpass filters without lens, so that the total throughput is high especially at z band (~ 50%). In addition, the optics of MuSaSHI is designed for fast telescopes (F ~ 6.5) and with portability in mind so that it is able to be mounted on a larger aperture telescope with slower beam. The limiting magnitudes with 60 sec integration (10σ) are rlim = 16.8, ilim = 17.1, and zlim = 17.2 mag. We demonstrate relative photometric precisions of < 0.1 % in the all bands for a K0 V star WASP-84 which hosts a transiting planet with 30s exposure observations.

We have developed a photo-sensor for an optical photon counting imager for astronomy with high timing resolution. We customize a Multi Pixel Photon Counter as a monolithic Geiger avalanche photodiode array with a pixel size of 100 micro-meter. The prototype model consists of 4x4 pixels. Excellent timing response is achieved as fast as an order of nanosecond. We evaluate the basic performance of the sensor and confirm the gain linearity, uniformity and low dark count rates. We observe the Crab pulsar using this system with a 35-cm telescope, and successfully detected periodic pulses with a frequency consistent with that reported by radio observatory.

Flares are thought to be the rapid releases of magnetic energy through magnetic reconnection in the corona. Blue asymmetries (enhancement of the blue wing) in chromospheric lines have been widely observed during flares on M dwarfs. They are thought to be caused by the upward motions of cool plasma (e.g., chromospheric evaporations, filament/prominence eruptions). As observed on the Sun, stellar filament/prominence eruptions can evolve into stellar CMEs (coronal mass ejections). Here we report the results from spectroscopic and photometric observations of the M-type flare star YZ CMi in the framework of the Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research (OISTER) collaborations during the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observation period. We detected 145 white-light flares from the TESS light curve and 4 H\(\alpha\) flares from the OISTER observations performed between 2019-01-16 and 2019-01-18. Among them, 3 H\(\alpha\) flares were associated with white-light flares. However, one of them did not show clear brightening in continuum; during this flare, the H\(\alpha\) line exhibited blue-asymmetry which has lasted for \(\sim 60\) min. The line of sight velocity of the blue-shifted component is \(-80\) - \(-100\) km s-1. By assuming that the blue-asymmetry in H\(\alpha\) line was caused by a prominence eruption on YZ CMi, we estimated the mass and kinetic energy of the upward-moving material to be \(10^{16}\) - \(10^{18}\) g and \(10^{29.5}\) - \(10^{31.5}\) erg, respectively. Although, the estimated mass is comparable to expectations from the empirical relation between the flare X-ray energy and mass of upward-moving material for solar CMEs, the estimated kinetic energy for the non-white-light flare on YZ CMi is roughly 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that expected from the relation between flare X-ray energy and kinetic energy for solar CMEs. We report on the multi-wavelength photometry of the 2018 superoutburst in EG Cnc. We have detected stage A superhumps and long-lasting late-stage superhumps via the optical photometry and have constrained the binary mass ratio and its possible range. The median value of the mass ratio is 0.048 and the upper limit is 0.057, which still implies that EG Cnc is one of the possible candidates for the period bouncer. This object also showed multiple rebrightenings in this superoutburst, which are the same as those in its previous superoutburst in 1996--1997 despite the difference in the main superoutburst. This would represent that the rebrightening type is inherent to each object and is independent of the initial disk mass at the beginning of superoutbursts. We also found that $B-I$ and $J-K_{\rm S}$ colors were unusually red just before the rebrightening phase and became bluer during the quiescence between rebrightenings, which would mean that the low-temperature mass reservoir at the outermost disk accreted with time after the main superoutburst. Also, the ultraviolet flux was sensitive to rebrightenings as well as the optical flux, and the $U-B$ color became redder during the rebrightening phase, which would indicate that the inner disk became cooler when this object repeated rebrightenings. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants that exert harmful effects on marine invertebrates; however, the molecular mechanism underlying PAH action remains unclear. We investigated the effect of PAHs on the ascidian Ciona intestinalis type A (Ciona robusta). First, the influence of PAHs on early Ciona development was evaluated. PAHs such as dibenzothiophene, fluorene, and phenanthrene resulted in formation of abnormal larvae. PAH treatment of swimming larva induced malformation in the form of tail regression. Additionally, we observed the Ciona aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ci-AhR) mRNA expression in swimming larva, mid body axis rotation, and early juvenile stages. The time correlation between PAH action and AhR mRNA expression suggested that Ci-AhR could be associated with PAH metabolism. Lastly, we analyzed Ci-AhR mRNA localization in Ciona juveniles. Ci-AhR mRNA was localized in the digestive tract, dorsal tubercle, ganglion, and papillae of the branchial sac, suggesting that Ci-AhR is a candidate for an environmental pollutant sensor and performs a neural function. Our results provide basic knowledge on the biological function of Ci-AhR and PAH activity in marine invertebrates.

We present the results of flux density, spectral index, and polarization intra-night monitoring studies of a sample of eight optically bright blazars, carried out by employing several small to moderate aperture (0.4\,m to 1.5\,m diameter) telescopes fitted with CCDs and polarimeters located in Europe, India, and Japan. The duty cycle of flux variability for the targets is found to be $\sim 45$ percent, similar to that reported in earlier studies. The computed two-point spectral indices are found to be between 0.65 to 1.87 for our sample, comprised of low- and intermediate frequency peaked blazars, with one exception; they are also found to be statistically variable for about half the instances where `confirmed' variability is detected in flux density. In the analysis of the spectral evolution of the targets on hourly timescale, a counter-clockwise loop (soft-lagging) is noted in the flux-spectral index plane on two occasions, and in one case a clear spectral flattening with the decreasing flux is observed. In our data set, we also observe a variety of flux-polarization degree variability patterns, including instances with a relatively straightforward anti-correlation, correlation, or counter-clockwise looping. These changes are typically reflected in the flux-polarization angle plane: the anti-correlation between the flux and polarization degree is accompanied by an anti-correlation between the polarization angle and flux, while the counter-clockwise flux-PD looping behaviour is accompanied by a clockwise looping in the flux-polarization angle representation. We followed up the massive young stellar object S255-NIRS3 (= S255-IRS1b) during its recent accretion outburst event in the $K_{\rm s}$ band with Kanata/HONIR for four years after its burst and obtained a long-term light curve. This is the most complete near-infrared light curve of the S255-NIRS3 burst event that has ever been presented. The light curve showed a steep increase reaching a peak flux that was 3.4 mag brighter than the quiescent phase and then a relatively moderate year-scale fading until the last observation, similar to that of the accretion burst events such as EXors found in lower-mass young stellar objects. The behavior of the $K_{\rm s}$-band light curve is similar to that observed in 6.7 GHz class II methanol maser emission, with a sudden increase followed by moderate year-scale fading. However, the maser emission peaks appear 30–50 d earlier than that of the $K_{\rm s}$ band emission. The similarities confirmed that the origins of the maser emission and the $K_{\rm s}$-band continuum emission are common, as previously shown from other infrared and radio observations by Stecklum et al. (2016, Astronomer’s Telegram, 8732), Caratti o Garatti et al. (2017b, Nature Phys., 13, 276), and Moscadelli et al. (2017, A&A, 600, L8). However, the differences in energy transfer paths, such as the exciting/emitting/scattering structures, may cause the delay in the flux-peak dates.

We present the results based on photometric ($Swift$ UVOT), broad-band polarimetric ($V$ and $R$-band) and optical spectroscopic observations of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2017hcc. Our study is supplemented with spectropolarimetric data available in literature for this event. The post-peak light curve evolution is slow ($\sim$0.2 mag 100 d$^{-1}$ in $b$-band). The spectrum of $\sim$+27 d shows a blue continuum with narrow emission lines, typical of a Type IIn SN. Archival polarization data along with the $Gaia$ DR2 distances have been utilized to evaluate the interstellar polarization (ISP) towards the SN direction which is found to be $P_{ISP}$ = 0.17 $\pm$ 0.02 per cent and $\theta_{ISP}$ = 140$^{\circ}$ $\pm$ 3$^{\circ}$. To extract the intrinsic polarization of SN 2017hcc, both the observed and the literature polarization measurements were corrected for ISP. We noticed a significant decline of $\sim$3.5 per cent ($V$-band) in the intrinsic level of polarization spanning a period of $\sim$2 months. In contrast, the intrinsic polarization angles remain nearly constant at all epochs. Our study indicates a substantial variation in the degree of asymmetry in either the ejecta and/or the surrounding medium of SN 2017hcc. We also estimate a mass-loss rate of $\dot M$ = 0.12 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ (for $v_w$ = 20 km s$^{-1}$) which suggests that the progenitor of SN 2017hcc is most likely a Luminous Blue Variable., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present optical and near-infrared observations of the nearby Type Iax supernova (SN) 2014dt from 14 to 410 days after the maximum light. The velocities of the iron absorption lines in the early phase indicated that SN 2014dt showed slower expansion than the well-observed Type Iax SNe 2002cx, 2005hk and 2012Z. In the late phase, the evolution of the light curve and that of the spectra were considerably slower. The spectral energy distribution kept roughly the same shape after ~100 days, and the bolometric light curve flattened during the same period. These observations suggest the existence of an optically thick component that almost fully trapped the {\gamma}-ray energy from 56 Co decay. These findings are consistent with the predictions of the weak deflagration model, leaving a bound white dwarf remnant after the explosion., Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present optical observations of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2019ein, starting two days after the estimated explosion date. the spectra and light curves show that SN 2019ein belongs to a high-velocity (HV) and broad-line group with a relatively rapid decline in the light curves (Delta m(15)(B) = 1.36 0.02 mag) and a short rise time (15.37 0.55 days). the Si ii lambda 6355 velocity, associated with a photospheric component but not with a detached high-velocity feature, reached similar to 20,000 km s(-1) 12 days before the B-band maximum. the line velocity, however, decreased very rapidly and smoothly toward maximum light, to similar to 13,000 km s(-1), which is relatively low among HV SNe. This indicates that the speed of the spectral evolution of HV SNe Ia is correlated with not only the velocity at maximum light, but also the light-curve decline rate, as is the case for normal-velocity (NV) SNe Ia. Spectral synthesis modeling shows that the outermost layer at >17,000 km s(-1) is well described by an O-Ne-C burning layer extending to at least 25,000 km s(-1), and there is no unburnt carbon below 30,000 km s(-1); these properties are largely consistent with the delayed detonation scenario and are shared with the prototypical HV SN 2002bo despite the large difference in Delta m(15)(B). This structure is strikingly different from that derived for the well-studied NV SN 2011fe. We present optical and near-infrared observations of a low-luminosity Type IIP supernova (SN) 2016bkv from the initial rising phase to the plateau phase. Our observations show that the end of the plateau is extended to $\gtrsim 140$ days since the explosion, indicating that this SN takes one of the longest time to finish the plateau phase. among Type IIP SNe (SNe IIP), including low-luminosity (LL) SNe IIP. The line velocities of various ions at the middle of the plateau phase are as low as 1,000--1,500 km s$^{-1}$, which is the lowest even among LL SNe IIP. These measurements imply that the ejecta mass in SN 2016bkv is larger than that of the well-studied LL IIP SN 2003Z. In the early phase, SN 2016bkv shows a strong bump in the light curve. In addition, the optical spectra in this bump phase exhibit a blue continuum accompanied with a narrow H$\alpha$ emission line. These features indicate an interaction between the SN ejecta and the circumstellar matter (CSM) as in SNe IIn. Assuming the ejecta-CSM interaction scenario, the mass loss rate is estimated to be $\sim 1.7 \times 10^{-2} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ within a few years before the SN explosion. This is comparable to or even larger than the largest mass loss rate observed for the Galactic red supergiants ($\sim 10^{-3} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for VY CMa). We suggest that the progenitor star of SN 2016bkv experienced a violent mass loss just before the SN explosion., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Hiroshima Astrophysical Science Center (HASC) was founded in 2004 at Hiroshima University, Japan. The main mission of this institute is the observational study of various transient objects including gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, novae, cataclysmic variables, and active galactic nuclei by means of multi-wavelength observations. HASC consists of three divisions; the optical-infrared astronomy division, high-energy astronomy division, and theoretical astronomy division. HASC is operating the 1.5m optical-infrared telescope Kanata, which is dedicated to follow-up and monitoring observations of transient objects. The high-energy division is the key operation center for the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope. HASC and the high-energy astronomy group in the department of physical science at Hiroshima University are closely collaborating with each other to promote multi-wavelength time-domain astronomy. We report the recent activities of HASC and some science topics pursued by this multi-wavelength collaboration.

We report on the results of our low resolution spectroscopic observations during the 2011 outburst of the recurrent nova T Pyx. Our observations were performed from 0.19 days to 34 days after the eruption discovered by M. Linnolt. We found Wolf-Rayet like features in our spectrum during the initial rising phase on t = 0.19 d. Following spectral developments are consistent with previous works. We discuss that the early phase of T Pyx is divided into three stages, a short lived WR-like stage, He/N stage and Fe II stage.

We present an optical and near-infrared (hereafter NIR) polarimetric study of a comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) observed on UT 2015 December 17-18 at phase angles of $\alpha$=52.1 deg - 53.1 deg. Additionally, we obtained an optical spectrum and multi-band images to examine the influence of gas emission. We find that the observed optical signals are significantly influenced by gas emission, that is, the gas-to-total intensity ratio varies from 5 to 30 % in the $R_{\rm C}$ and 3 to 18 % in the $I_{\rm C}$ bands, depending on the position in the coma. We derive the `gas-free dust polarization degrees' of 13.8$\pm$1.0 % in the $R_{\rm C}$ and 12.5$\pm$1.1 % in the $I_{\rm C}$ bands and a gray polarimetric color, i.e., -8.7$\pm$9.9 % $\mu \mathrm{m}$$^{-1}$ in optical and 1.6$\pm$0.9 % $\mu \mathrm{m}$$^{-1}$ in NIR. The increments of polarization obtained from the gas correction show that the polarimetric properties of the dust in this low-polarization comet are not different from those in high-polarization comets. In this process, the cometocentric distance dependence of polarization has disappeared. We also find that the $R_{\rm C}$-band polarization degree of the southeast dust tail, which consists of large dust particles (100 $\mu \mathrm{m}$ - 1 mm), is similar to that in the outer coma where small and large ones are mixed. Our study confirms that the dichotomy of cometary polarization does not result from the difference of dust properties, but from depolarizing gas contamination. We present the early-phase spectra and the light curves of the broad-lined supernova (SN) 2016coi from $t=7$ to $67$ days after the estimated explosion date. This SN was initially reported as a broad-lined Type SN Ic (SN Ic-BL). However, we found that spectra up to $t=12$ days exhibited the He~{\sc i} $\lambda$5876, $\lambda$6678, and $\lambda$7065 absorption lines. We show that the smoothed and blueshifted spectra of normal SNe Ib are remarkably similar to the observed spectrum of SN 2016coi. The line velocities of SN 2016coi were similar to those of SNe Ic-BL and significantly faster than those of SNe Ib. Analyses of the line velocity and light curve suggest that the kinetic energy and the total ejecta mass of SN 2016coi are similar to those of SNe Ic-BL. Together with broad-lined SNe 2009bb and 2012ap for which the detection of He~{\sc i} were also reported, these SNe could be transitional objects between SNe Ic-BL and SNe Ib, and be classified as broad-lined Type `Ib' SNe (SNe `Ib'-BL). V404 Cygni is a well-known black hole binary candidate thought to have relativistic jets. It showed extreme outbursts on June 2015, characterized by a large amplitude and short time variation of flux in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands. Not only disk emission, but also synchrotron radiation from the relativistic jets were suggested by radio observations. However, it is difficult to measure the accurate spectral shape in the optical/near infrared band because there are uncertainties of interstellar extinction. To estimate the extinction value for V404 Cygni, we performed photopolarimetric and spectroscopic observations of V404 Cygni and nearby field stars. Here, we estimate the Galactic extinction using interstellar polarization based on the observation that the origin of the optical polarization is the interstellar medium, and investigate the properties of interstellar polarization around V404~Cygni. We found a good correlation between the color excess and polarization degree in the field stars. We also confirmed that the wavelength dependence of the polarization degree in the highly polarized field stars was similar to that of V404~Cygni. Using the highly polarized field stars, we estimated the color excess and the extinction, $E(B-V)=1.2 \pm 0.2$ and $3.0 < A(V) < 3.6$, respectively. Multiple outbursts of a Jupiter-family comet, 15P/Finlay, occurred from late 2014 to early 2015. We conducted an observation of the comet after the first outburst and subsequently witnessed another outburst on 2015 January 15.6-15.7. The gas, consisting mostly of C2 and CN, and dust particles expanded at speeds of 1,110 +/- 180 m/s and 570 +/- 40 m/s at a heliocentric distance of 1.0 AU. We estimated the maximum ratio of solar radiation pressure with respect to the solar gravity beta_max = 1.6 +/- 0.2, which is consistent with porous dust particles composed of silicates and organics. We found that 10^8-10^9 kg of dust particles (assumed to be 0.3 micron - 1 mm) were ejected through each outburst. Although the total mass is three orders of magnitude smaller than that of the 17P/Holmes event observed in 2007, the kinetic energy per unit mass (104 J/kg) is equivalent to the estimated values of 17P/Holmes and 332P/2010 V1 (Ikeya-Murakami), suggesting that the outbursts were caused by a similar physical mechanism. From a survey of cometary outbursts on the basis of voluntary reports, we conjecture that 15P/Finlay-class outbursts occur >1.5 times annually and inject dust particles from Jupiter-family comets and Encke-type comets into interplanetary space at a rate of ~10 kg/s or more., 37 pages, 9 figures

High cadence ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic observations of the peculiar Type II supernova (SN) 2018hna are presented. The early phase multiband light curves exhibit the adiabatic cooling envelope emission following the shock breakout up to ~14 days from the explosion. SN~2018hna has a rise time of $\sim$\,88 days in the V-band, similar to SN 1987A. A $\rm^{56}Ni$ mass of ~0.087$\pm$0.004 $\rm M_{\odot}$ is inferred for SN 2018hna from its bolometric light curve. Hydrodynamical modelling of the cooling phase suggests a progenitor with a radius ~50 $\rm R_{\odot}$, a mass of ~14-20 $\rm M_{\odot}$ and explosion energy of ~1.7-2.9$\rm \times$ $\rm 10^{51}\ erg$. The smaller inferred radius of the progenitor than a standard red supergiant is indicative of a blue supergiant progenitor of SN 2018hna. A sub-solar metallicity (~0.3 $\rm Z_{\odot}$) is inferred for the host galaxy UGC 07534, concurrent with the low-metallicity environments of 1987A-like events., 8 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJ Letters

Context.Spectropolarimetry is a powerful technique for investigating the physical properties of gas and solid materials in cometary comae without mutual contamination, but only a few spectropolarimetric studies have been conducted to extract each component.Aims.We attempt to derive the continuum (i.e., scattered light from dust coma) polarization degree of comet 2P/Encke, free of the influence of molecular emissions. The target is unique in that its orbit is dynamically decoupled from Jupiter, like the main-belt asteroids, but it ejects gas and dust like ordinary comets.Methods.We observed the comet using the Hiroshima Optical and Near-Infrared Camera attached to the Cassegrain focus of the 150 cm Kanata telescope on UT 2017 February 21 when the comet was at the solar phase angle ofα= 75°.7.Results.We find that the continuum polarization degree with respect to the scattering plane isPcont, r= 33.8 ± 2.7% at the effective wavelength of 0.82μm, which is significantly higher than those of cometary dust in a high-Pmaxgroup at similar phase angles. Assuming that an ensemble polarimetric response of the dust of 2P/Encke as a function of phase angle is morphologically similar with those of other comets, its maximum polarization degree is estimated toPmax≳ 40% atαmax≈ 100°. In addition, we obtain the polarization degrees of the C2swan bands (0.51–0.56μm), the NH2αbands (0.62–0.69μm), and the CN-red system (0.78–0.94μm) in a range of 3–19%, which depend on the molecular species and rotational quantum numbers of each branch. The polarization vector is aligned nearly perpendicularly to the scattering plane with an average of 0°.4 over a wavelength range of 0.50–0.97μm.Conclusions.From the observational evidence, we conjecture that the high polarization degree of 2P/Encke might be attributable to a dominance of large dust particles around the nucleus, which have remained after frequent perihelion passages near the Sun.

Kiehlmann, S. et. al., Context. Over the past few years, on several occasions, large, continuous rotations of the electric vector position angle (EVPA) of linearly polarized optical emission from blazars have been reported. These events are often coincident with high energy gamma-ray flares and they have attracted considerable attention, since they could allow us to probe the magnetic field structure in the gamma-ray emitting region of the jet. The flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 is one of the most prominent examples showing this behaviour. Aims. Our goal is to study the observed EVPA rotations and to distinguish between a stochastic and a deterministic origin of the polarization variability. Methods. We have combined multiple data sets of R-band photometry and optical polarimetry measurements of 3C 279, yielding exceptionally well-sampled flux density and polarization curves that cover a period of 2008-2012. Several large EVPA rotations are identified in the data. We introduce a quantitative measure for the EVPA curve smoothness, which is then used to test a set of simple random walk polarization variability models against the data. Results. 3C 279 shows different polarization variation characteristics during an optical low-flux state and a flaring state. The polarization variation during the flaring state, especially the smooth similar to 360 degrees rotation of the EVPA in mid-2011, is not consistent with the tested stochastic processes. Conclusions. We present extensively dense observations of the super-Chandrasekhar supernova (SC SN) candidate SN 2012dn from $-11$ to $+140$ days after the date of its $B$-band maximum in the optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths conducted through the OISTER ToO program. The NIR light curves and color evolutions up to 35 days after the $B$-band maximum provided an excellent match with those of another SC SN 2009dc, providing a further support to the nature of SN 2012dn as a SC SN. We found that SN 2012dn exhibited strong excesses in the NIR wavelengths from $30$ days after the $B$-band maximum. The $H$ and $K_{s}$-band light curves exhibited much later maximum dates at $40$ and $70$ days after the $B$-band maximum, respectively, compared with those of normal SNe Ia. The $H$ and $K_{s}$-band light curves subtracted by those of SN 2009dc displayed plateaued evolutions, indicating a NIR echo from the surrounding dust. The distance to the inner boundary of the dust shell is limited to be $4.8 - 6.4\times10^{-2}$ pc. No emission lines were found in its early phase spectrum, suggesting that the ejecta-CSM interaction could not occur. On the other hand, we found no signature that strongly supports the scenario of dust formation. The mass loss rate of the pre-explosion system is estimated to be $10^{-6}-10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, assuming that the wind velocity of the system is $10-100$ km~s$^{-1}$, which suggests that the progenitor of SN 2012dn could be a recurrent nova system. Blazars are highly variable active galactic nuclei which emit radiation at all wavelengths from radio to gamma-rays. Polarized radiation from blazars is one key piece of evidence for synchrotron radiation at low energies and it also varies dramatically. The polarization of blazars is of interest for understanding the origin, confinement, and propagation of jets. However, even though numerous measurements have been performed, the mechanisms behind jet creation, composition and variability are still debated. We performed simultaneous gamma-ray and optical photopolarimetry observations of 45 blazars between Jul. 2008 and Dec. 2014 to investigate the mechanisms of variability and search for a basic relation between the several subclasses of blazars. We identify a correlation between the maximum degree of optical linear polarization and the gamma-ray luminosity or the ratio of gamma-ray to optical fluxes. Since the maximum polarization degree depends on the condition of the magnetic field (chaotic or ordered), this result implies a systematic difference in the intrinsic alignment of magnetic fields in pc-scale relativistic jets between different types blazars (FSRQs vs. BL Lacs), and consequently between different types of radio galaxies (FR Is vs. FR IIs)., Comment: 17 pages, 30 figures, 6 tables. Here we report on the results of the WEBT photo-polarimetric campaign targeting the blazar S5~0716+71, organized in March 2014 to monitor the source simultaneously in BVRI and near IR filters. The campaign resulted in an unprecedented dataset spanning $\sim 110$\,h of nearly continuous, multi-band observations, including two sets of densely sampled polarimetric data mainly in R filter. During the campaign, the source displayed pronounced variability with peak-to-peak variations of about $30\%$ and "bluer-when-brighter" spectral evolution, consisting of a day-timescale modulation with superimposed hourlong microflares characterized by $\sim 0.1$\,mag flux changes. We performed an in-depth search for quasi-periodicities in the source light curve; hints for the presence of oscillations on timescales of $\sim 3$\,h and $\sim 5$\,h do not represent highly significant departures from a pure red-noise power spectrum. We observed that, at a certain configuration of the optical polarization angle relative to the positional angle of the innermost radio jet in the source, changes in the polarization degree led the total flux variability by about 2\,h; meanwhile, when the relative configuration of the polarization and jet angles altered, no such lag could be noted. The microflaring events, when analyzed as separate pulse emission components, were found to be characterized by a very high polarization degree ($> 30\%$) and polarization angles which differed substantially from the polarization angle of the underlying background component, or from the radio jet positional angle. We investigate the efficiency of interstellar polarization $p_\lambda/A_\lambda$ where $p_\lambda$ is the fractional linear polarization and $A_\lambda$ is extinction, in 16 lines of sight as a function of wavelength $\lambda$. We have used the data obtained with the low-dispersion spectropolarimeter HBS as well as those in literature. It is found that the polarization efficiency $p_\lambda/A_\lambda$ is proportional to $\exp(-\beta/\lambda)$ in wavelength $\lambda \approx 0.4-0.8 \micron$, where $\beta$ is a parameter which varies from 0.5 to 1.2 $\micron$. We find that $\beta$ is negatively correlated with the dust temperature deduced from infrared data by Schlegel et al., suggesting that the polarization efficiency is higher in short wavelength for higher temperature. According to the alignment theory by radiative torques (RATs), if the radiation is stronger and bluer, RATs will make small grains align better, and the polarization efficiency will increase in short wavelength. Our finding of the correlation between $\beta$ and the temperature is consistent with what is expected with the alignment mechanism by RATs., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. We report X-ray, optical, and near-infrared monitoring of the new X-ray transient MAXI J1820$+$070 discovered with MAXI on 2018 March 11. Its X-ray intensity reached $\sim 2$ Crab in 2--20 keV at the end of March, and then gradually decreased until the middle of June. In this period, the X-ray spectrum was described by Comptonization of the disk emission, with a photon index of $\sim$1.5 and an electron temperature of $\sim$50 keV, which is consistent with a black hole X-ray binary in the low/hard state. The electron temperature and the photon index were slightly decreased and increased with increasing flux, respectively. The source showed significant X-ray flux variation on timescales of seconds. This short-term variation was found to be associated with changes in the spectral shape, and the photon index became slightly harder at higher fluxes. This suggests that the variation was produced by a change in the properties of the hot electron cloud responsible for the strong Comptonization. Modeling a multi-wavelength SED around the X-ray flux peak at the end of March, covering the near-infrared to X-ray bands, we found that the optical and near-infrared fluxes were likely contributed substantially by the jet emission. Before this outburst, the source was never detected in the X-ray band with MAXI (with a 3$\sigma$ upper limit of $\sim$0.2 mCrab in 4--10 keV, obtained from the 7-year data in 2009--2016), whereas weak optical and infrared activity was found at their flux levels $\sim$3 orders of magnitude lower than the peak fluxes in the outburst., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
