Abstract

Crystalline Ge layer fabricated via layer-exchange metal-induced crystallization is a promising candidate as a seed layer for the epitaxial growth of III–V semiconductor thin films for multijunction solar cells. However, small crystalline islands that grow on top of the crystalline Ge layer are a problem, which roughens the surface and hinders subsequent epitaxial growth. Considering the effect of heating rate on the Au-induced crystallization behavior of Ge, it is found that the temperature required for the island growth in the top Ge layer was higher than that for the bottom layer. By carefully choosing the annealing conditions, the growth of the top Ge layer can be avoided resulting in an atomically smooth Ge(111) surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Right ventricular dilatation and remodeling the first year after an initial transmural wall left ventricular myocardial infarction

Abstract

Left ventricular (LV) remodeling after LV myocardial infarction was described previously. Little is known regarding concomitant adaptation, if any, in right ventricular (RV) volumes after LV infarction. To examine this issue, cine-computed tomography was used to determine serial changes in absolute global LV and RV volumes in 27 patients without clinical heart failure during the first year after an initial Q-wave myocardial infarction (14 anterior and 13 inferior). The patient group with anterior wall LV infarction showed progressive increases in LV and RV volumes from hospital discharge to 1 year (end-diastolic volumes +25 and +13%, respectively; and end-systolic volumes +35 and +15%, respectively). In patients with inferior wall LV infarction, both LV end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes increased significantly during the study period (+13 and +15%, respectively). Despite a trend for RV end-diastolic volume to be increased at 1 year, neither end-diastolic nor end. systolic volume increased significantly after hospital discharge following inferior wall LV infarction. Absolute RV end-diastolic volume was not significantly different between the infarct groups at any time after infarction. In conclusion, global changes occur in both LV and RV volumes during the first year after an initial infarction regardless of infarct location. The magnitude of these changes was greater after anterior than inferior wall LV infarction.

Abstract

We examine stability of competitive equilibrium in an N-country world economy with capital accumulation, where each country can have either increasing marginal impatience (IMI) or decreasing marginal impatience (DMI). The necessary and su¢ cient condition for stability is shown as positive deÖniteness of a simple matrix. The condition requires that any positive perturbation in one countryís wealth, adjusted for international spillover e§ects on other countryís savings, reduces the countryís wealth accumulation. In the presence of a DMI country, the number of countries should be su¢ ciently small for stability. Particularly, the existence of two or more than two DMI countries implies instablility.

Abstract

This research is the Örst to examine dynamic general equilibrium in a growing two-country economy under decreasing marginal impatience (DMI). The stability condition is shown to be more restrictive than in the case of an endowment economy and/or under increasing marginal impatience (IMI). By analyzing global-economy adjustment to time preference shocks, international transfers, and productivity shocks, equilibrium dynamics in the presence of DMI di§er drastically from what is obtained when the standard IMI model is used. For example, in a country characterized by DMI, a positive productivity shock improves the countryís welfare level and lowers its steady-state time preference and, hence, the steady-state interest rate. This leads to an increase in the neighboring countryís capital stock.
