Vertically aligned graphite substrate (VGS)-copper packaging was renowned for improving the robustness against the thermal gradient loading by using micro texturing. The micro-groove array with a line width of 50 μm and a pitch of 100 μm was formed into the VGS by controlling the line depth with the use of fast-rate oxygen plasma etching. Three micro-grooved VGS specimens were wet-plated to fill these microgrooves with copper deposits and to cover the VGS surfaces. The nearly full-deposited VGS-Copper specimens were subjected to a severe thermal transient loading test. The simply Cu-covered package and shallow rib-structured VGS-Cu packages were damaged to delaminate at their interfaces. The VGS-Cu package with the copper rib structure with a height of 50 μm experienced no delamination. This rib-structured VGS-copper package with high rib height had sufficient robustness against the severe thermal transients even with the proof of homogeneous thermal spreading capacity.

Background: In Japan, where infertility treatment is now covered by insurance, appropriate protocols for patients with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) based on treatment outcomes and cost-effectiveness must be selected. Therefore, this study aims to provide information on the outcomes and cost-effectiveness of conventional ovarian stimulation and mild stimulation for patients with DOR in Japan. Methods: Data from 66 women who underwent first oocyte retrieval at Showa University Hospital between May 2019 and November 2023 were analyzed. Results: The clomiphene citrate (CC) group used significantly fewer gonadotropins and incurred lower costs than the conventional ovarian stimulation group while achieving comparable clinical outcomes, including cumulative live birth rates. Conclusions: CC-based minimal stimulation is a cost-effective alternative to conventional ovarian stimulation for patients with low ovarian reserve without compromising clinical efficacy. Further randomized controlled trials are required to confirm these findings and optimize protocols for this population.

Abstract Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) variation is associated with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) development in patients with chronic kidney disease; whether annual variations in eGFR at health check-ups is associated with ESKD risk in the general population is unclear. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Japanese national medical insurance claims from 2013 to 2020. Individuals who had their eGFR levels measured three times in annual health check-ups were included (N = 115,191), and the coefficient of variation of eGFR (CVeGFR) was calculated from 3-point eGFR. The end-point was ESKD as reported in the claims data. We analyzed the association between CVeGFR and ESKD incidence after adjusting for conventional ESKD risk factors. The CVeGFR median distribution was 5.7% (interquartile range: 3.5–8.5%). During a median follow-up period of 3.74 years, 164 patients progressed to ESKD. Background/Aims The optimal length of the uncovered portion of partially covered self-expandable metal stents (PCSEMSs) used in endoscopic ultrasound-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS) remains unclear. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of PCSEMSs with different uncovered lengths, with a focus on stent migration and time to recurrent biliary obstruction (RBO). Methods Outcomes of patients undergoing EUS-HGS using PCSEMSs with 5-mm and 20-mm uncovered portions at our institution from January 2016 to December 2021 were compared. Results Sixty-two patients underwent EUS-HGS using PCSEMS (5/20-mm uncovered portions: 32/30). Stent migration occurred only in the 5-mm group. There were no differences in RBO rates (28.1% vs. 40.0%) or median time to RBO (6.8 vs. 7.1 months) between the two groups. Median overall survival (OS) was longer in the 20-mm group (3.1 vs. 4.9 months, p=0.037) due to the higher number of patients that resumed chemotherapy after EUS-HGS (56.7% vs. 28.1%, p=0.029). Good performance status, absence of hepatic metastases, and chemotherapy after EUS-HGS were independent predictors of longer OS. Conclusions No migration was observed in patients treated with PCSEMS with 20-mm uncovered portions. Patients treated with PCSEMS with 20-mm uncovered portions performed at least as well as those treated with 5-mm uncovered portions in all material respects.

Background: An association between birth weight and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adulthood has been observed in many countries; however, only a few studies have been conducted in Asian populations. Methods: We used data from the baseline survey (2011–2016) of the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study for the Next Generation Cohort, which included 114,105 participants aged 40–74 years. Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated from the prevalence of present and past histories of CVD and other lifestyle-related diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and gout, by birth weight, using Poisson regression. Results: The prevalence of CVD increased with lower birth weight, with the highest prevalence among those with birth weight under 1,500 grams (males 4.6%; females 1.7%) and the lowest one among those with birth weight at or over 4,000 g (males 3.7%: females 0.8%). Among 88,653 participants (41,156 males and 47,497 females) with complete data on possible confounders, birth weight under 1,500 g was associated with a higher prevalence of CVD (aPR 1.76; 95% CI, 1.37–2.26), hypertension (aPR 1.29; 95% CI, 1.17–1.42), and diabetes (aPR 1.53; 95% CI, 1.26–1.86) when a birth weight of 3,000–3,999 grams was used as the reference. Weaker associations were observed for birth weight of 1,500–2,499 grams and 2,500–2,999 grams, while no significant associations were observed for birth weight at or over 4,000 grams. The association between birth weight and the prevalence of hyperlipidemia was less profound, and no significant association was observed between birth weight and gout. Conclusion: Lower birth weight was associated with a higher prevalence of CVD, hypertension, and diabetes in the Japanese population.

Abstract Accelerator-based boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) systems employing a solid-state lithium target indicated the reduction of neutron flux over the lifetime of a target, and its reduction could represent the neutron flux model. This study proposes a novel compensatory approach for delivering the required neutron fluence and validates its clinical applicability. The proposed approach relies on the neutron flux model and the cumulative sum of real-time measurements of proton charges. The accuracy of delivering the required neutron fluence for BNCT using the proposed approach was examined in five Li targets. With the proposed approach, the required neutron fluence could be delivered within 3.0%, and within 1.0% in most cases. However, those without using the proposed approach exceeded 3.0% in some cases. The proposed approach can consider the neutron flux reduction adequately and decrease the effect of uncertainty in neutron measurements. Therefore, the proposed approach can improve the accuracy of delivering the required fluence for BNCT even if a neutron flux reduction is expected during treatment and over the lifetime of the Li target. Additionally, by adequately revising the approach, it may apply to other type of BNCT systems employing a Li target, furthering research in this direction.

Objectives: Hydrogel spacer (HS) was developed to reduce rectal toxicities caused by radiotherapy, but has been reported to cause major adverse events. Our institute has attempted to introduce a hyaluronic acid (HA) as an alternative spacer. This study aimed to compare rectal doses and geometric distributions between the HS and HA implantation in prostate cancer. Methods: HS and HA were inserted in 20 and 18 patients undergoing high-dose brachytherapy, respectively. The rectum spacer volumes injected were 10 mL and 22 mL, respectively. In the treatment planning system, 13.5 Gy was administered with common catheter positions. The rectal dose indices were assessed between the spacer groups for dosimetry evaluation. Distances between the prostate and rectum and configurations of the spacers were compared. Results: The mean doses irradiated to 0.1 and 2 mL of the rectum were 10.45 Gy and 6.71 Gy for HS, and 6.73 Gy and 4.90 Gy for HA (p

A-kinase anchor protein 12 (AKAP12), a scaffold protein, has been implicated in the central nervous system, including blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Although its expression level in the corpus callosum is higher than in other brain regions, such as the cerebral cortex, the role of AKAP12 in the corpus callosum remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the impact of AKAP12 deficiency by transcriptome analysis using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) on the corpus callosum of AKAP12 knockout (KO) mice. We observed minimal changes, with only 13 genes showing differential expression, including Akap12 itself. Notably, Klf2 and Sgk1 , genes potentially involved in BBB function, were downregulated in AKAP12 KO mice and expressed in vascular cells similar to Akap12 . These changes in gene expression may affect important biological pathways that may be associated with neurological disorders. Our findings provide an additional data set for future research on the role of AKAP12 in the central nervous system.

Abstract Background Imipenem/cilastatin (IPM/CS) has long been administered intravenously as a carbapenem antibiotic. However, since this agent is poorly soluble in liquid, occasional reports have described its use as a short-acting, temporary embolic agent. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the characteristics of IPM/CS particles, which are thought to have pain-relieving effects against osteoarthritis-related pain, as an embolic agent. Methods Three aspects of IPM/CS as an embolic agent were evaluated in vitro: particle size; particle shape; and change in particle size over time. For particle size, the long diameter was measured. Results Mean particle size (n=244) was 29.2±12.0 µm (range, 1–60 µm). Shape (n=109) was round in 18.35%, elliptical in 11.93%, and polygonal in 69.72%, showing that most particles were polygonal. In observations of changes in particle size over time (n=9), particles had decreased to 75% of their original size at 82±10.7 min, 50% at 89.3±9.14 min, 25% at 91.3±8.74 min, complete dissolved at 91.8±9.02 min. A rapid shrinkage in diameter was seen in the final period. Conclusions IPM/CS particles are ultrafine and the majority display a polygonal shape. This substance shows ultra-short embolic activity. This study revealed the characteristics of a substance that demonstrates an embolic effect not found in existing embolic materials.

Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, are significantly impacting various fields. While LLMs have been extensively studied for code generation and text synthesis, their application in detecting malicious web content, particularly phishing sites, remains largely unexplored. To counter the increasing cyber-attacks that leverage LLMs for creating more sophisticated and convincing phishing content, it is crucial to automate detection by harnessing LLMs’ advanced capabilities. This paper introduces ChatPhishDetector, a novel system that employs LLMs to identify phishing sites. Our approach involves using a web crawler to collect website information, generating prompts for LLMs based on the gathered data, and extracting detection results from LLM responses. This system enables accurate detection of multilingual phishing sites by identifying impersonated brands and social engineering techniques within the entire website context, without requiring machine learning model training. We evaluated our system’s performance using our own dataset and compared it with baseline systems and several LLMs. Experiments using GPT-4V showed exceptional results, achieving 98.7% precision and 99.6% recall, surpassing the detection performance of other LLMs and existing systems. These findings highlight the potential of LLMs for protecting users from online fraudulent activities and provide crucial insights for strengthening defenses against phishing attacks.

In this paper, we propose a new self-supervised learning (SSL) method for representations that enable logic operations. Representation learning has been applied to various tasks like image generation and retrieval. The logical controllability of representations is important for these tasks. Although some methods have been shown to enable the intuitive control of representations using natural languages as the inputs, representation control via logic operations between representations has not been demonstrated. Some SSL methods using representation synthesis (e.g., elementwise mean and maximum operations) have been proposed, but the operations performed in these methods do not incorporate logic operations. In this work, we propose a logic-operable self-supervised representation learning method by replacing the existing representation synthesis with the OR operation on the probabilistic extension of many-valued logic. The representations comprise a set of feature-possession degrees, which are truth values indicating the presence or absence of each feature in the image, and realize the logic operations (e.g., OR and AND). Our method can generate a representation that has the features of both representations or only those features common to both representations. Furthermore, the expression of the ambiguous presence of a feature is realized by indicating the feature-possession degree by the probability distribution of truth values of the many-valued logic. We showed that our method performs competitively in single and multi-label classification tasks compared with prior SSL methods using synthetic representations. Moreover, experiments on image retrieval using MNIST and PascalVOC showed the representations of our method can be operated by OR and AND operations.

Here we report the discovery of a single specimen of the eurysquillid mantis shrimp, Manningia andamanensis Ghosh, 1975, from Okinawa Island, southwestern Japan. This specimen is the first member of the superfamily Eurysquilloidea to be recorded from Japanese waters, and is the second record ever for this species. This new record significantly extends the range of M. andamanensis from the North Andaman Islands northeastward to Japan. Live coloration for this species is revealed in detail for the first time.

Background: Although several studies have investigated the accuracy of clinical diagnoses of skin tumors, specific ways to improve diagnostic accuracy have not been identified. This study investigated factors that influence the accuracy of clinical skin tumor diagnostic methods and discusses strategies to improve accuracy. Methods: Study 1 retrospectively analyzed 657 skin tumors excised at our hospital between March 2001 and March 2011. Data were extracted from surgical records to establish a diagnostic template for further research. Study 2 prospectively applied this template to aid clinical diagnosis at four facilities between April 2011 and March 2013. The clinical diagnoses were compared with the histological ones and the concordance was determined. Results: A total of 448 and 209 benign and malignant tumors, respectively, were included in Study 1. The overall diagnostic accuracy was 79.0%. In Study 2, 310 patients were clinically diagnosed using a standardized template, which did not affect the diagnostic accuracy. Age, sex, duration of disease, tumor size and location, skin tone, mobility, stiffness, and years of diagnostic experience did not significantly affect diagnostic accuracy. A high proportion of pathologically malignant tumors were clinically misdiagnosed as benign (16/22; 72%). Other clinical examinations were performed in only 35 cases. Conclusions: Auxiliary diagnostic tools such as dermoscopy and biopsies should be used to accurately diagnose malignant tumors.

Abstract Background Obesity is associated with various complications and decreased life expectancy, and substantial heterogeneity in complications and outcomes has been observed. However, the subgroups of obesity have not yet been clearly defined. This study aimed to identify the subgroups of obesity especially those for target of interventions by cluster analysis. Methods In this study, an unsupervised, data-driven cluster analysis of 9,494 individuals with obesity (body mass index ≥ 35 kg/m2) was performed using the data of ICD-10, drug, and medical procedure from the healthcare claims database. The prevalence and clinical characteristics of the complications such as diabetes in each cluster were evaluated using the prescription records. Additionally, renal and life prognoses were compared among the clusters. Results We identified seven clusters characterised by different combinations of complications and several complications were observed exclusively in each cluster. Notably, the poorest prognosis was observed in individuals who rarely visited a hospital after being diagnosed with obesity, followed by those with cardiovascular complications and diabetes. Conclusions In this study, we identified seven subgroups of individuals with obesity using population-based data-driven cluster analysis. We clearly demonstrated important target subgroups for intervention as well as a metabolically healthy obesity group.

Abstract Background Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) has a high recurrence rate and a poor prognosis. Thus, the development of effective treatment and prognostic biomarkers is required. High expression of diacylglycerol kinase alpha (DGKα) is a prognostic factor for the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the relationship between DGKα expression and prognosis in ICC has not been reported. Methods Immunohistochemistry (IHC) with anti‐DGKα antibody was performed on surgical specimens of ICC (n = 69). First, DGKα expression in cancer cells was qualitatively classified into four groups (−, 1+, 2+, 3+) and divided into two groups (DGKα− and DGKα+1 + to 3+). The relationship between clinical features and DGKα expression was analyzed. Second, Ki‐67 expression was evaluated as a cell proliferation marker. The number of Ki‐67‐positive cells was counted, and the relationship with DGKα expression was examined. Results DGKα IHC divided the patients into a DGKα+ group (1+: n = 15; 2+: n = 5; 3+: n = 5) and a DGKα− group (−: n = 44). In the DGKα+ group, patients were older and had advanced disease. Both overall survival and recurrence‐free survival (RFS) were significantly worse in the DGKα+ patients. DGKα+ was identified as an independent prognostic factor for RFS by multivariate analysis. Furthermore, the number of Ki‐67‐positive cells increased in association with the staining levels of DGKα. Conclusion Pathological DGKα expression in ICC was a cancer proliferation marker associated with recurrence. This suggests that DGKα may be a potential therapeutic target for ICC.

Abstract Objectives Japanese guidelines include high‐grade (poorly differentiated) tumors as a risk factor for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in T1 colorectal cancer (CRC). However, whether the grading is based on the least or most predominant component when the lesion consists of two or more levels of differentiation varies among institutions. This study aimed to investigate which method is optimal for assessing the risk of LNM in T1 CRC. Methods We retrospectively evaluated 971 consecutive patients with T1 CRC who underwent initial or additional surgical resection from 2001 to 2021 at our institution. Tumor grading was divided into low‐grade (well‐ to moderately differentiated) and high‐grade based on the least or predominant differentiation analyses. We investigated the correlations between LNM and these two grading analyses. Results LNM was present in 9.8% of patients. High‐grade tumors, as determined by least differentiation analysis, accounted for 17.0%, compared to 0.8% identified by predominant differentiation analysis. A significant association with LNM was noted for the least differentiation method (p < 0.05), while no such association was found for predominant differentiation (p = 0.18). In multivariate logistic regression, grading based on least differentiation was an independent predictor of LNM (p = 0.04, odds ratio 1.68, 95% confidence interval 1.00–2.83). Sensitivity and specificity for detecting LNM were 27.4% and 84.1% for least differentiation, and 2.1% and 99.3% for predominant differentiation, respectively. Conclusions Tumor grading via least differentiation analysis proved to be a more reliable measure for assessing LNM risk in T1 CRC compared to grading by predominant differentiation.

Abstract Background 10‐mm self‐expandable metal stents (SEMSs) are commonly used for preoperative biliary drainage in pancreatic cancer. However, smaller diameter SEMSs have attracted attention with the attempt to reduce stent‐related adverse events (AEs). Methods We retrospectively analyzed consecutive borderline resectable pancreatic cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant therapy and fully covered SEMS (FCSEMS) placement from April 2015 to May 2023. The primary outcome was stent‐related non‐event rate (NER), which was defined as the rate of completion of surgery without developing any preoperative events (recurrent biliary obstruction [RBO] or stent‐related AEs). Secondary outcomes included stent‐related AEs, causes of RBO, and cumulative incidence of RBO. Risk factors for pancreatitis, RBO, and stent migration were also examined. Results A total of 76 patients were included (6‐mm group: 23; 10‐mm group: 53). Stent‐related NER (57% vs. 64%, p = 0.610), stent‐related AEs (4% vs. 15%, p = 0.263), overall RBO rates (39% vs. 23%, p = 0.168), cumulative incidence of RBO (hazard ratio, 2.24; 95% confidence interval, 0.95–5.25; p = 0.065) were not significantly different between the two groups. Tumor involvement of the pancreatic duct was identified as a risk‐reducing factor for pancreatitis, while an FCSEMS diameter of 6 mm was not identified as a risk factor for RBO and stent migration. Conclusions Stent‐related NER was not significantly affected by FCSEMS diameter. Further studies are needed to confirm the usefulness of 6‐mm diameter FCSEMS for preoperative biliary drainage in patients with borderline resectable pancreatic cancer.

Abstract We report a case of ruptured cystic artery pseudoaneurysm after self‐expandable metal stent placement for malignant biliary obstruction. A 78‐year‐old woman on palliative care after chemotherapy for unresectable pancreatic head cancer presented with obstructive jaundice. Imaging revealed a dilated common bile duct and an enlarged gallbladder with cystic wall thickening. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was performed and a fully‐covered self‐expandable metal stent was placed in the bile duct, leading to resolution of jaundice. She presented with hematochezia 7 days later. Contrast‐enhanced computed tomography revealed a cystic artery pseudoaneurysm with extravasation of contrast into a blood‐filled gallbladder. Hemostasis was achieved after emergent transcatheter arterial embolization. Rupture of cystic artery pseudoaneurysm should be raised as a differential diagnosis for hemobilia after self‐expandable metal stent placement, particularly in cases accompanied by inflamed gallbladders.

Abstract Although antithyroid drug (ATD)-induced agranulocytosis is a significant concern, its risks associated with long-term use and re-administration are not fully elucidated. Therefore, we performed this study to determine the incidence of ATD-induced leukopenia and G-CSF administration using administrative claims database. Retrospective cohort study. This study was performed using the DeSC Japanese administrative claims database. A total of 12,491 patients with newly diagnosed Graves’ disease (GD) who received methimazole or propylthiouracil between April 2014, and February 2021 among 3.44 million patients in the database were included in the study. We measured the six-year incidence of leukopenia and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) administration. The incidence of leukopenia and G-CSF administration was 1.34% (168 patients) and 0.30% (38 patients), respectively. Leukopenia had a dose-dependent and biphasic incidence. The incidence of leukopenia and G-CSF administration was 37.2 (0.7%) and 8.0 (0.2%) per 1000 person-years during the first 72 days of ATD initiation, whereas it was 3.1 and 0.7 per 1000 person-years during the subsequent 6 years, respectively. The incidence of both outcomes was comparable between first administration and re-administration of ATD. The incidence of ATD-induced leukopenia and G-CSF administration was high in the first 72 days, with a reduced risk for at least 6 years thereafter. The incidence was similar between first administration and re-administration. ATD, a standard therapy, is often administered for a long period; therefore, our findings can guide the treatment of GD.

Abstract The first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP) in the total structure factor has long been regarded as a characteristic feature of medium-range order (MRO) in amorphous materials with a polyhedron network, and its underlying structural origin is a subject of ongoing debate. In this study, we utilized machine learning molecular dynamics (MLMD) simulations to explore the origin of FSDP in two typical high-density silica glasses: silica glass under pressure and permanently densified glass. Our MLMD simulations accurately reproduce the structural properties of high-density silica glasses observed in experiments, including changes in the FSDP intensity depending on the compression temperature. By analyzing the simulated silica glass structures, we uncover the structural origin responsible for the changes in the MRO at high density in terms of the periodicity between the ring centers and the shape of the rings. The reduction or enhancement of MRO in the high-density silica glasses can be attributed to how the rings deform under compression.

Mouse double minute 2 (MDM2) is an oncoprotein that is frequently overexpressed in tumors and enhances cellular transformation. Owing to the important role of MDM2 in modulating p53 function, it is crucial to understand the mechanism underlying the regulation of MDM2 levels. We identified ribosomal protein S4X-linked (RPS4X) as a novel binding partner of MDM2 and showed that RPS4X promotes MDM2 stability. RPS4X suppressed polyubiquitination of MDM2 by suppressing homodimer formation and preventing auto-ubiquitination. Moreover, RPS4X inhibited the interaction between MDM2 and Cullin1, a scaffold protein of the Skp1-Cullin1-F-box protein (SCF) complex and an E3 ubiquitin ligase for MDM2. RPS4X expression in cells enhanced the steady-state level of MDM2 protein. RPS4X was associated not only with MDM2 but also with Cullin1 and then blocked the MDM2/Cullin1 interaction. This is the first report of an interaction between ribosomal proteins (RPs) and Cullin1. Our results contribute to the elucidation of the MDM2 stabilization mechanism in cancer cells, expanding our understanding of the new functions of RPs.

Abstract Aims Schizophrenia is a chronic relapsing psychiatric disorder that is characterized by many symptoms and has a high heritability. There were studies showing that the phospholipid abnormalities in subjects with schizophrenia (Front Biosci, S3, 2011, 153; Schizophr Bull, 48, 2022, 1125; Sci Rep, 7, 2017, 6; Anal Bioanal Chem, 400, 2011, 1933). Disturbances in prefrontal cortex phospholipid and fatty acid composition have been reported in subjects with schizophrenia (Sci Rep, 7, 2017, 6; Anal Bioanal Chem, 400, 2011, 1933; Schizophr Res, 215, 2020, 493; J Psychiatr Res, 47, 2013, 636; Int J Mol Sci, 22, 2021). For exploring the signaling pathways contributing to the lipid changes in previous study (Sci Rep, 7, 2017, 6), we performed two types of transcriptome analyses in subjects with schizophrenia: an unbiased transcriptome analysis solely based on RNA‐seq data and a correlation analysis between levels of gene expression and lipids. Methods RNA‐Seq analysis was performed in the postmortem prefrontal cortex from 10 subjects with schizophrenia and 5 controls. Correlation analysis between the transcriptome and lipidome from 9 subjects, which are the same samples in the previous lipidomics study (Sci Rep, 7, 2017, 6). Results Extraction of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and further sequence and functional group analysis revealed changes in gene expression levels in phosphoinositide 3‐kinase (PI3K)‐Akt signaling and the complement system. In addition, a correlation analysis clarified alterations in ether lipid metabolism pathway, which is not found as DEGs in transcriptome analysis alone. Conclusions This study provided results of the integrated analysis of the schizophrenia‐associated transcriptome and lipidome within the PFC and revealed that lipid‐correlated alterations in the transcriptome are enriched in specific pathways including ether lipid metabolism pathway.

Abstract Spintronic devices are based on heterojunctions of two materials with different magnetic and electronic properties. Although an energy barrier is naturally formed even at the interface of metallic heterojunctions, its impact on spin transport has been overlooked. Here, using diffusive spin Hall currents, we provide evidence that the inherent energy barrier governs the spin transport even in metallic systems. We find a sizable field-like torque, much larger than the damping-like counterpart, in Ni81Fe19/Bi0.1Sb0.9 bilayers. This is a distinct signature of barrier-mediated spin-orbit torques, which is consistent with our theory that predicts a strong modification of the spin mixing conductance induced by the energy barrier. Our results suggest that the spin mixing conductance and the corresponding spin-orbit torques are strongly altered by minimizing the work function difference in the heterostructure. These findings provide a new mechanism to control spin transport and spin torque phenomena by interfacial engineering of metallic heterostructures.

The safety and effectiveness of chemotherapy in elderly patients with biliary tract cancer (BTC) remain unclear. Therefore, we retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent chemotherapy for locally advanced, metastatic, or recurrent BTC at our institution from January 2016 to December 2021. Of the 283 included patients, 91 (32.5%) were aged 75 years or older when initiating chemotherapy. Elderly patients were more likely than non-elderly patients to receive monotherapy with gemcitabine or S-1 (58.7% vs. 9.4%, p < 0.001) and were less likely to experience grade 3–4 toxicities (55.4% vs. 70.2%, p = 0.015). The rates of termination due to intolerance (6.5% vs. 5.8%, p = 0.800) and transition to second-line chemotherapy (39.1% vs. 40.3%, p = 0.849) were similar between groups. In the overall cohort, age was not an independent predictor of overall survival (OS). Within the elderly cohort, there were no differences in severe adverse events between patients receiving monotherapy and combination therapy (50.0% vs. 63.2%, p = 0.211). Median OS was longer in the combination therapy group (10.4 vs. 14.1 months; p = 0.010); however, choice of monotherapy was not an independent predictor of overall survival. Monotherapy appears to be a viable alternative in selected elderly BTC patients.

The present study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and investigated the characteristics of hemodynamic responses of oxy-Hb and deoxy-Hb during motor imagery and action observation for whole-body movements. Sixteen female participants performed tasks under two conditions: motor imagery and action observation. Each condition included three tasks of whole-body movement of gymnastics: (1) forward roll, (2) backward roll, and (3) cartwheel. Under both motor imagery and action observation conditions, the mean amplitude of oxy-Hb in the left posterior parietal cortex (PPC) was significantly more positive for the forward roll than cartwheel. The mean amplitude of deoxy-Hb was significantly more negative for the cartwheel than forward roll in the middle PPC. These findings suggest that PPC plays an important role in representations of movement during motor imagery and action observation. In addition, correlations between the vividness of motor imagery and mean amplitudes of oxy-Hb were identified in the premotor and primary motor areas. These results suggest that psychological assessments for vividness are linked to neural motor processes, and may provide a valid and economic tool to evaluate a person’s ability to perform motor imagery.

An importance for risk management has come to be re-recognized in Japan after the accident of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants. A Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) fulfills a significantly important role in the framework of the risk management. Technical adequacy of PRA model and high quality of data are required in order to utilize PRA for such risk-informed activities. Therefore, Japanese utilities launched the project for enhancing the quality of PRA models and are upgrading PRA models to comply with international standards. Chugoku Electric Power Company (Chugoku) is also upgrading the internal events at power PRA model including both the level 1 and level 2 (except the source term analysis) and enhancing PRA quality in order to utilize risk insight for improving nuclear safety. The aim of the PRA upgrade is to reflect international state-of-the-practice approaches and to meet ASME/ANS PRA standard (ASME/ANS 2013) requirements (Capability Category II). Our PRA upgrading process is divided into 3 phases: “Phase I”, “Phase II” and “As-is”. This paper reports the detail of PRA upgrade implemented in Phase I and Phase II such as initiating event refinement, accident sequence re-evaluation, detailed fault tree (FT) analyses, modeling severe accident measures and updating human reliability analysis (HRA).

Abstract Open and practical exchange, dissemination, and reuse of specimens and data have become a fundamental requirement for life sciences research. The quality of the data obtained and thus the findings and knowledge derived is thus significantly influenced by the quality of the samples, the experimental methods, and the data analysis. Therefore, a comprehensive and precise documentation of the pre‐analytical conditions, the analytical procedures, and the data processing are essential to be able to assess the validity of the research results. With the increasing importance of the exchange, reuse, and sharing of data and samples, procedures are required that enable cross‐organizational documentation, traceability, and non‐repudiation. At present, this information on the provenance of samples and data is mostly either sparse, incomplete, or incoherent. Since there is no uniform framework, this information is usually only provided within the organization and not interoperably. At the same time, the collection and sharing of biological and environmental specimens increasingly require definition and documentation of benefit sharing and compliance to regulatory requirements rather than consideration of pure scientific needs. In this publication, we present an ongoing standardization effort to provide trustworthy machine‐actionable documentation of the data lineage and specimens. We would like to invite experts from the biotechnology and biomedical fields to further contribute to the standard.

Abstract Grapheme-color synesthesia is a consistent and automatic perception of non-physical color when presented with a grapheme. Many previous studies focused on the synesthetic visual system, but other cognitive functions in grapheme-color synesthetes have remained unclear. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of cognitive processing for motor execution and inhibition during Go/No-go paradigms in grapheme-color synesthesia using event-related potentials (ERPs). Six grapheme-color synesthetes and 24 non-synesthetes performed visual, auditory, and somatosensory Go/No-go paradigms. Omission errors were higher in grapheme-color synesthetes than non-synesthetes. Group-trial interactions (i.e., synesthetes–non-synesthetes × Go–No-go) were observed for the latency of the visual N2 component and amplitude of the somatosensory N2 component. Latencies of auditory and somatosensory P3 components were shorter in grapheme-color synesthetes than non-synesthetes. These findings suggest that grapheme-color synesthetes have specific cognitive processing in motor execution and inhibition as well as synesthetic color perception. Our data advance understanding of cognitive processing in grapheme-color synesthesia.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of several promoters on the transfection activity and immune-induction efficiency of a plasmid DNA (pDNA)/polyethylenimine/γ-polyglutamic acid complex (pDNA ternary complex). Model pDNAs encoding firefly luciferase (Luc) were constructed with several promoters, such as simian virus 40 (SV40), eukaryotic elongation factor 1 alpha (EF1), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and chicken beta actin hybrid (CBh) (pSV40-Luc, pEF1-Luc, pCMV-Luc, and pCBh-Luc, respectively). Four types of pDNA ternary complexes, each with approximately 145-nm particle size and −30-mV ζ-potential, were stably constructed. The pDNA ternary complex containing pSV40-Luc showed low gene expression, but the other complexes containing pEF1-Luc, pCMV-Luc, and pCBh-Luc showed high gene expression in DC2.4 cells and spleen after intravenous administration. After immunization using various pDNA encoding ovalbumin (OVA) such as pEF1-OVA, pCMV-OVA, and pCBh-OVA, only the pDNA ternary complex containing pCBh-OVA showed significant anti-OVA immunoglobulin G (IgG) induction. In conclusion, our results showed that the CBh promoter is potentially suitable for use in pDNA ternary complex-based DNA vaccination.

Two new species of Hesionidae, Parahesione pulvinata sp. nov. and Parahesione apiculata sp. nov. are described based on materials collected at tidal flats in Okinawa (Japan) from burrows of the ghost shrimps Neocallichirus jousseaumei and Glypturus armatus. The two new species are characterized by having eight enlarged cirri, dorsal cirrophores with dorsal foliose lobe and biramous parapodia, and by lacking median antenna. Parahesione apiculata sp. nov. has digitate lobes on the posterior margin of the dorsal foliose lobe (absent in P. pulvinata sp. nov.). The two new species were never found outside the ghost shrimp burrows, suggesting they are obligate symbionts. Phylogenetic analyses based on four concatenated genes suggest that the symbiotic lifestyle has evolved several times in Hesionidae.

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) has been implicated in brown adipose tissue (BAT) formation and energy consumption; however, the mechanistic role of sphingolipids, including S1P, in BAT remains unclear. Here, we showed that, in mice, BAT activation by cold exposure upregulated mRNA and protein expression of the S1P-synthesizing enzyme sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1) and S1P production in BAT. Treatment of wild-type brown adipocytes with exogenous S1P or S1P receptor subtype-selective agonists stimulated triglyceride (TG) breakdown only marginally, compared with noradrenaline. However, genetic deletion of Sphk1 resulted in hypothermia and diminished body weight loss upon cold exposure, suggesting that SphK1 is involved in thermogenesis through mechanisms different from receptor-mediated, extracellular action of S1P. In BAT of wild-type mice, SphK1 was localized largely in the lysosomes of brown adipocytes. In the brown adipocytes of Sphk1−/− mice, the number of lysosomes was reduced and lysosomal function, including proteolytic activity, acid esterase activity, and motility, was impaired. Concordantly, nuclear translocation of transcription factor EB, a master transcriptional regulator of lysosome biogenesis, was reduced, leading to decreased mRNA expression of the lysosome-related genes in Sphk1−/− BAT. Moreover, BAT of Sphk1−/− mice showed greater TG accumulation with dominant larger lipid droplets in brown adipocytes. Inhibition of lysosomes with chloroquine resulted in a less extent of triglyceride accumulation in Sphk1−/− brown adipocytes compared with wild-type brown adipocytes, suggesting a reduced lysosome-mediated TG breakdown in Sphk1−/− mice. Our results indicate a novel role of SphK1 in lysosomal integrity, which is required for TG breakdown and thermogenesis in BAT.

This study reports the first patient treatment for cutaneous malignant melanoma using a linear accelerator-based boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) system. A single-center open-label phase I clinical trial had been conducted using the system since November 2019. A patient with a localized node-negative acral malignant melanoma and the largest diameter of the tumor ≤ 15 cm who refused primary surgery and chemotherapy was enrolled. After administering boronophenylalanine (BPA), a single treatment of BNCT with the maximum dose of 18 Gy-Eq delivered to the skin was performed. The safety and efficacy of the accelerator-based BNCT system for treating localized cutaneous malignant melanoma were evaluated. The first patient with cutaneous malignant melanoma in situ on the second finger of the left hand did not develop dose-limiting toxicity in the clinical trial. After BNCT, the treatment efficacy was gradually observed, and the patient achieved PR within 6 months and CR within 12 months. Moreover, during the follow-up period of 12 months after BNCT, the patient did not exhibit a recurrence without any treatment-related grade 2 or higher adverse events. Although grade 1 adverse events of dermatitis, dry skin, skin hyperpigmentation, edema, nausea, and aching pain were noted in the patient, those adverse events were relieved without any treatment. This case report shows that the accelerator-based BNCT may become a promising treatment modality for cutaneous malignant melanoma. We expect further clinical trials to reveal the efficacy and safety of the accelerator-based BNCT for cutaneous malignant melanoma.

In this study, we investigated the differences in performance and kinematics between overground and treadmill running using the same amount of subjective effort. Fourteen female participants performed a 50-m sprint, running at maximum effort (100% subjective effort) as the maximal task on the ground. Subsequently, based on 100% subjective effort, they performed the grading task on the ground and on the treadmill at 30, 50, and 70% subjective effort. The running motion was recorded using a high-speed camera. We observed a significant difference in running velocity between the overground and treadmill conditions because treadmill running was recognized as having a greater load than overground running. The running velocity could be adjusted according to the subjective effort required for both overground and treadmill running. On the treadmill, running velocity was adjusted by maintaining flight time with increased subjective effort. Additionally, running velocity was adjusted by both step frequency and step length on the treadmill, whereas overground running velocity was adjusted by step frequency rather than step length. We also observed that overground, the knee angle was more flexible with an increase in subjective effort through one gait cycle, and the ankle joint was fixed at a high subjective effort. On the treadmill, the knee angle was adjusted only during the swing phase, and greater dorsiflexion was observed at high subjective effort.

Abstract Background Arginase-1 (ARG1), a urea cycle-related enzyme, catalyzes the hydrolysis of arginine to urea and ornithine, which regulates the proliferation, differentiation, and function of various cells. However, it is unclear whether ARG1 controls the progression and malignant alterations of colon cancer. Methods We established metastatic colonization mouse model and ARG1 overexpressing murine colon cancer CT26 cells to investigate whether activation of ARG1 was related to malignancy of colon cancer cells in vivo. Living cell numbers and migration ability of CT26 cells were evaluated in the presence of ARG inhibitor in vitro. Results Inhibition of arginase activity significantly suppressed the proliferation and migration ability of CT26 murine colon cancer cells in vitro. Overexpression of ARG1 in CT26 cells reduced intracellular l-arginine levels, enhanced cell migration, and promoted epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Metastatic colonization of CT26 cells in lung and liver tissues was significantly augmented by ARG1 overexpression in vivo. ARG1 gene expression was higher in the tumor tissues of liver metastasis than those of primary tumor, and arginase inhibition suppressed the migration ability of HCT116 human colon cancer cells. Conclusion Activation of ARG1 is related to the migration ability and metastatic colonization of colon cancer cells, and blockade of this process may be a novel strategy for controlling cancer malignancy.

Abstract Submacular hemorrhage (SMH) can lead to devastating visual loss in patients with age-related macular degeneration. We retrospectively evaluated the surgical outcomes of vitrectomy with subretinal injection of tissue plasminogen activator, bevacizumab, and air in 13 cases. Visual prognosis, anatomical results obtained with optical coherence tomography (OCT), and their correlations were investigated. We analyzed OCT parameters including SMH height, pigment epithelial detachment (PED) height and width, and status of ellipsoid zone (EZ) line. Complete displacement of SMH was achieved in 12 eyes. Abstract Background 18F-FDG PET is often utilized to determine BNCT selection due to the limited availability of 18F-BPA PET, which is performed by synthesizing 18F into the boron drug used for BNCT, although the uptake mechanisms between those are different. Additionally, only a few non-spatial point parameters, such as maximum SUV (SUVmax), have reported a correlation between those in previous studies. This study aimed to investigate the spatial accumulation pattern between those PET images in tumors, which would be expected to either show higher uptake on 18F-BPA PET or be utilized in clinical, to verify whether 18F-FDG PET could be used as a selection indicator for BNCT. Methods A total of 27 patients with 30 lesions (11 squamous cell carcinoma, 9 melanoma, and 10 rhabdomyosarcoma) who received 18F-FDG and 18F-BPA PET within 2 weeks were enrolled in this study. The ratio of metabolic tumor volumes (MTVs) to GTV, histogram indices (skewness/kurtosis), and the correlation of total lesion activity (TLA) and non-spatial point parameters (SUVmax, SUVpeak, SUVmin, maximum tumor-to-normal tissue ratio (T max/N), and T min/N) were evaluated. After local rigid registration between those images, distances of locations at SUVmax and the center of mass with MTVs on each image and similarity indices were also assessed along its coordinate. Results In addition to SUVmax, SUVpeak, and T max/N, significant correlations were found in TLA. The mean distance in SUVmax was $$25.2 \pm 24.4\; {\text{mm}}$$ 25.2 ± 24.4 mm and significantly longer than that in the center of mass with MTVs. The ratio of MTVs to GTV, skewness, and kurtosis were not significantly different. However, the similarities of MTVs were considerably low. The similarity indices of Dice similarity coefficient, Jaccard coefficient, and mean distance to agreement for MTV40 were $$0.65 \pm 0.21$$ 0.65 ± 0.21 , $$0.51 \pm 0.21$$ 0.51 ± 0.21 , and $$0.27 \pm 0.30$$ 0.27 ± 0.30 cm, respectively. Furthermore, it was worse in MTV50. In addition, spatial accumulation patterns varied in cancer types. Conclusions Spatial accumulation patterns in tumors showed low similarity between 18F-FDG and 18F-BPA PET, although the various non-spatial point parameters were correlated. In addition, the spatial accumulation patterns were considerably different in cancer types. Therefore, the selection for BNCT using 18F-FDG PET should be compared carefully with using 18F-FBPA PET.

Several neuroimaging studies have analyzed the neural networks involved in thermal sensation. In some of these studies, participants were instructed to evaluate and report the thermal sensation using a point scale, visual analog scale, or other psychophysical rating tool while the imaging data were obtained. Therefore, the imaging data may reflect signals involved in the processes of both sensation and evaluation. The present study aimed to discriminate the neural networks involved in identifying different temperature stimuli and the two different processes by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We applied four different thermal stimuli (“hot,” 40C; “warm,” 36 °C, “cool,” 27 °C; and “cold,” 22 °C) to the left forearm using Peltier apparatus. During the stimuli, participants were instructed to either evaluate (evaluation task) or not evaluate (no-evaluation task) and report the thermal sensation. We found brain activation in the medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral insula, and posterior parietal cortex during the four thermal stimuli both with and without the evaluation task. Additionally, the stimuli with the evaluation task induced stronger and broader activation, including the right fronto-parietal and anterior insula regions. These results indicate that thermal stimulation activates the common neural networks, independent of the thermal conditions and evaluation process. Moreover, the evaluation process may increase the attention to the thermal stimuli, resulting in the activation of the right lateralized ventral attentional network.

We screened four strains (Burkholderia sp. St-A, and Pseudomonas spp. St-B, St-C, and St-D) from 21 bacterial isolates isolated tomato cultivation fields based on their plant growth-promoting traits. Then, tomato (‘Micro-Tom’) seedlings inoculated with each of the four selected strains were grown under non-salinity and salinity (NaCl) treatment conditions. Under non-salinity conditions, St-C and St-D strains increased the total biomass of roots, stems, and leaves and fruit yield. Under NaCl treatment conditions, St-B, St-C, and St-D strains increased total biomass and fruit yield. In roots, Na content was not suppressed, but K, P, and water content were increased by bacterial inoculations. Correlation analysis showed a significant and positive relationship between fruit yield and root under both non-salinity and salinity conditions. This indicates that the maintenance of homeostasis and water relations in roots may contribute to the improvement of plant growth, including root and fruit yield, under salinity conditions.

For successful actions in a fast, dynamic environment such as sports, a quick successful anticipation of a forthcoming environmental state is essential. However, the perceptual mechanisms involved in successful anticipation are not fully understood. This study examined the relationships between the magnitude of representational momentum (RM) as a forward displacement of the memory representation of the final position of a moving object (which implies that observers perceptually “see” a near future forthcoming dynamic environmental state) and the temporal and spatial anticipatory judgments of the opponent’s high or middle kicks in taekwondo. Twenty-seven participants (university taekwondo club members and non-members) observed video clips of taekwondo kicks that vanished at one of 10 frame positions prior to the kick impact and performed three tasks consecutively: anticipatory coincidence timing (CT) with the arrival of kick impact, judgment of the kick type (high and middle kicks) by forced choice, and judgment of the vanishing frame position (measuring RM). Our results showed significant group effects for the number of correct kick-type judgments and the judgment threshold for kick-type choice (kick-typeJT), which was estimated in terms of individual psychometric function curves. A significant correlation was found between the magnitude of RM (estimated at kick-typeJT) and kick-typeJT, but not between the CT errors (estimated at kick-typeJT) and kick-typeJT. This indicates that the magnitude of RM may play an influential role in quick kick-type judgments, but not in coincidence timing while observing an opponent’s kick motion. These findings suggest that subjective anticipatory perception or judgment of the future spatial state is vital to anticipatory actions under severe time constraints.

Hot springs have long been used for medical purposes throughout the world. Recently, the positive effects of hot spa-bathing on circulatory diseases have been reported, while there are few reports on the mental effects of hot spa-bathing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between hot spa-bathing habits and mental health throughout Japan. We conducted a nationwide online survey, including questions on bathing behavior, subjective satisfaction, lifestyle, and illness. The results showed a significant positive correlation between hot spa-bathing habits and multiple subjective satisfaction levels regarding mental health effects. The factor analysis results indicated that hot spa-bathing habits tended to be associated with good mental health, high health consciousness, and disease. Our study revealed that subjective satisfaction was higher among individuals with hot spa-bathing habits, suggesting that the hot spring spa-bathing habit may have a positive influence on mental health.

Magnetic flux modulation gear was proposed in 2001, and many researchers have reported its transmission torque density which has increased dramatically compared to conventional magnetic transmissions. It has some unique characteristics not found in mechanical transmissions such as greaseless drive, high efficiency, quiet drive, low backlash, step-out torque and so on. Therefore, it has potential not only to replace existing mechanical gears but to create new value. For example, it is expected to save maintenance time, improve the working environment (factory or office) by making it quieter, increase efficiency of speed up gears for generators. However, only a few studies about detailed transmission characteristics have been reported. Therefore, authors made a prototype and measured the driving efficiency, loss characteristics, backlash, torsional stiffness, and sound pressure level. In this paper, we report the experimental results and suggest potential used for new applications.

Abstract We present a 41‐year‐old man with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia and pulmonary hypertension (PH) in the setting of a non‐autoimmune background whose clinical presentation masqueraded pulmonary veno‐occlusive disease (PVOD). Because of no histological evidence of venous occlusion in his previous lung biopsy, phosphodiesterase type‐5 inhibitor was given, resulting in sudden onset of pulmonary edema. At autopsy, there were histological features of interstitial fibrosis with occlusion of the lobular septal veins and venules. Clinical presentations of PH due to interstitial fibrosis with pulmonary venous lesions may simulate those of PVOD and careful diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are required.

Quick decision making is a vital factor for a successful pass in soccer games. Many previous studies of decision making in soccer focused on motor execution, but inhibitory processing has remained unclear. This study aimed to clarify the differences in motor execution and inhibitory among Japanese collegiate soccer players with different skill levels. We evaluated the behavioral data and event-related potentials in the high-skilled, low-skilled, and novice groups during the Go/No-go and pass choice reaction tasks. The reaction time (RT) was significantly shorter in the high group than in the novice group, and RT variability was small in the high group. The amplitude of the N2 component was significantly larger in the high group than in the low and novice groups, and the latency of the P3 component was significantly shorter in the high and low groups than in the novice group during the pass choice reaction task. The subtracted No-go N2 amplitude was also significantly larger in the high and low groups than in the novice group, and correlations existed between the RT, RT variability, and the subtracted No-go N2 amplitude during these tasks. These data indicate that soccer players’ behavioral responses and inhibition processing decision-making activities are associated with skill levels.

Genetic mechanisms influencing COVID-19 susceptibility are not well understood. Here, the authors analyzed whole blood RNA-seq data of 465 Japanese individuals with COVID-19, highlighting thousands of fine-mapped variants affecting expression and splicing of genes, as well as the presence of COVID-19 severity-interaction eQTLs.

Background and purpose: Online magnetic resonance-guided adaptive radiotherapy (MRgART) is a new technology of radiotherapy and requires a new quality control program in many aspects. This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of risks in online MRgART through the application of failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) for more enhanced and effective quality assurance (QA) programs. Materials and methods: We present an FMEA conducted by a multidisciplinary team with more than two years of experience. A process map describing the whole process of online MRgART was developed and potential failure modes were identified. High-risk failure modes and their potential causes and corrective measures were also identified. Failure modes were classified into three categories, MRgRT, online ART, and conventional RT, to investigate their features. A comparison with previous studies was also conducted to gain a general perspective. Results: In total, 153 failure modes and 49 high risks were identified. Among all failure modes, 51, 63, and 66 were related to MRgRT, online ART, and conventional RT, respectively. The hazardous processes were structure segmentation, treatment planning, and treatment beam delivery. Lists of failure modes identified in this study and previous studies were presented. Based on the results, characteristics and general aspects of the risks were discussed. Conclusion: Exploring the results of the FMEA enhanced our understanding of risk characteristics to improve QA program of online MRgART.

We investigate the anomalous Hall effect in a van der Waals material Fe5GeTe2. We find a distinct difference in the temperature dependence of the anomalous Hall effect associated with the evolution of magnetic states in Fe5GeTe2 films. In the low-temperature region, the anomalous Hall conductivity changes with the longitudinal conductivity, which highlights the substantial contribution from the extrinsic mechanism. The extracted skew scattering coefficient in the Fe5GeTe2 films is an order of magnitude larger than that in transition metal ferromagnets. This result sheds light on the role of the extrinsic mechanism in the anomalous Hall effect in van der Waals magnets.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to deepen our understanding of pitches and to obtain basic knowledge about pitches by comparing 4-seam and other pitches in Major League Baseball (MLB).MethodsWe analyzed big data for 1,820 professional baseball pitchers of MLB on release speed, spin rate, release point 3D coordinates (X, Y, and Z axes), amount of change for 4-seam, and seven changing ball types (sinker, slider, changeup, cutter, curve, split finger, and knuckle curve), using PITCHf/x and TrackMan.
