In isolated Mfs, phagocytosis and cytokine production were assessed. Immunohistochemistry for CD68 and F4/80 and expression of CD14 and CD16 were assessed. Experiment 2: Bone marrow cells harvested from enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) mice were transplanted into wild-type mice with or without splenectomy after total body irradiation that was kept on methionine- and choline-deficient diets.Results: Experiment 1: The number of CD68-positive cells and the percentage of F4/80-positive/CD68-positive cells increased with the progression of NAFLD. Production of TNF-α and IL-6 by hepatic Mfs was greater than that by splenic Mfs in mice with NASH. The number of CD14+CD16− Mfs increased in the spleen and decreased in the liver in animals that had progressed to NASH. Furthermore, the number of CD14+CD16+ hepatic Mfs was increased in animals that had progressed to NASH with fibrosis. Experiment 2: EGFP-positive cells were observed in the liver after transplantation. In the splenectomy group, EGFP-positive Mfs were also observed; however, the number was significantly less than that in the sham operation group.Conclusion: The populations and functions of hepatic and splenic Mfs are altered during the progression of NAFLD. Abstract

We report 75As-NMR measurements of the ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2. 75As-NMR spectra clearly revealed that magnetic transition occurs at around 131 K in our samples, which corresponds to the emergence of spin density wave. Temperature dependence of the internal magnetic field suggests that the transition is likely of the first order. The critical-slowing-down phenomenon in the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 is not pronounced in this material., Comment: To be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn

Abstract

Dyke-Davidoff-Masson Syndrome (DDMS) is a rare clinical condition in which atrophy or hypoplasia of one cerebral hemisphere occurs secondary to brain insult during fetal or early childhood, which results in variable clinical manifestations like hemiparesis, seizures, expressive aphasia, and mental retardation. This rare entity mainly presents in childhood and is unusual in adults. DDMS is a rare cause of epilepsy and should be considered and excluded in cases of refractory seizures. Few cases have been reported from a developing nation like Nigeria but not from the north-eastern part of Nigeria to the best of our knowledge. Though fewer specialists exist in Adamawa State, efforts to train more specialists and education of medical officers to manage this rare case need to be strengthened. Herein is a case of an adolescent boy with recurrent generalized tonic-clonic convulsions complicated by left-sided hemiparesis, expressive aphasia, and mental age equivalent of a six-year-old by the Goodenough draw-a-person test. Found to be obese with Body Mass Index (BMI) of 29 kg/m2(Z-score >2 Standard deviation SD), microcephaly, Occipito-frontal Circumference (OFC) of 45 cm (Z-score > –3 SD), spastic left-sided hemiplegia and hemiplegic gait. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed hyper-intensity in the right cerebral hemisphere, extensive atrophy of the right cerebral hemisphere involving the ipsilateral fronto-temporoparietal lobes, cerebral peduncle, and a contralateral megalencephaly, ipsilateral lateral ventricular dilatation, hypertrophic calvarium, hyperpneumatization of sphenoidal sinuses and midline shift due to loss of volume on the right. A diagnosis of Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome was made; the patient did well on carbamazepine and physiotherapy. Caregivers were counseled, and the patient was discharged home and is currently on a follow-up visit.

Abstract

Group G Streptococcus (GGS) causes toxic shock syndrome. Its incidence has been increasing in the elderly in recent years. The case is a female patient in her 60s, with rheumatoid arthritis, who developed necrotizing fasciitis in her right thigh. We administered antibacterial agents and debridement frequently at an early stage, followed by aggressive high-protein enteral nutrition and multidisciplinary treatment. During the course of treatment, the patient’s general condition temporarily deteriorated because of fecal contamination. We considered amputation of the lower limb and implantation of a stoma, but finally succeeded in preserving the limb by performing two skin grafts. The patient was able to walk and was discharged on day 66. GGS infection is a risk factor for elderly patients with underlying diseases such as malignancy or immunocompromised states. When necrotizing fasciitis due to fulminant streptococcal infection develops in a proximal limb, amputation of the limb is often necessary to save the patient’s life. In this case, a fulminant GGS infection developed in an immunocompromised patient with active rheumatoid arthritis. Although the risk of limb amputation was high, multidisciplinary treatment enabled functional preservation of the affected limb.

Abstract

Background: The outbreak of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by a novel coronavirus (named SARS-CoV-2) has gained attention globally and has been recognized as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO) due to the rapidly increasing number of deaths and confirmed cases. Health care workers (HCWs) are vulnerable to this crisis as they are the first frontline to receive and manage COVID-19 patients. In this multicenter multinational survey, we aim to assess the level of awareness and preparedness of hospital staff regarding COVID-19 all over the world.Methods: From February to March 2020, the web-based or paper-based survey to gather information about the hospital staff's awareness and preparedness in the participants' countries will be carried out using a structured questionnaire based on the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) checklist and delivered to participants by the local collaborators for each hospital. As of March 2020, we recruited 374 hospitals from 58 countries that could adhere to this protocol as approved by their Institutional Review Boards (IRB) or Ethics Committees (EC).Discussion: The awareness and preparedness of HCWs against COVID-19 are of utmost importance not only to protect themselves from infection, but also to control the virus transmission in healthcare facilities and to manage the disease, especially in the context of manpower lacking and hospital overload during the pandemic. The results of this survey can be used to inform hospitals about the awareness and preparedness of their health staff regarding COVID-19, so appropriate policies and practice guidelines can be implemented to improve their capabilities of facing this crisis and other future pandemic-prone diseases.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Genetic risk factors for dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS) and dengue fever (DF) are limited, in particular there are sparse data on genetic risk across diverse populations. METHODS: We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in a derivation and validation sample of 7, 460 participants of Latin American, South Asian, and South East Asian ancestries. We then developed a weighted polygenic risk score (PRS) for each participant in each of the validation cohorts of the three ancestries to predict the risk of DHF/DSS compared to DF, DHF/DSS compared to controls, and, DF compared to controls. FINDINGS: The risk of DHF/DSS was significantly increased, odds ratio [OR] 1.84 (95%CI 1.47 to 2.31) (195 SNPs), compared to DF, fourth PRS quartile versus first quartile, in the validation cohort. The risk of DHF/DSS compared to controls was increased (OR=3.94; 95% CI 2.84 to 5.45) (278 SNPs), as was the risk of DF compared to controls (OR=1.97; 95%CI 1.63 to 2.39) (251 SNPs). Risk increased in a dose-dependent manner with increase in quartiles of PRS across comparisons. Significant associations persisted for PRS built within ancestries and applied to the same or different ancestries as well as for PRS built for one outcome (DHF/DSS or DF) and applied to the other. INTERPRETATION: There is a strong genetic effect that predisposes to risk of DHF/DSS and DF. The genetic risk for DHF/DSS is higher than that for DF when compared to controls, and this effect persists across multiple ancestries.
