Search

We report on a search for electron antineutrinos ( ) from astrophysical sources in the neutrino energy range 8.3-30.8 MeV with the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 6.72 kton-year of the liquid scintillator, we observe 18 candidate events via the inverse beta decay reaction. Although there is a large background uncertainty from neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, we find no significant excess over background model predictions. Assuming several supernova relic neutrino spectra, we give upper flux limits of 60-110 cm-2 s-1 (90% confidence level, CL) in the analysis range and present a model-independent flux. We also set limits on the annihilation rates for light dark matter pairs to neutrino pairs. These data improve on the upper probability limit of 8B solar neutrinos converting into , (90% CL) assuming an undistorted shape. This corresponds to a solar flux of 60 cm-2 s-1 (90% CL) in the analysis energy range.

The KamLAND-Zen 800 experiment is searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136Xe by using 136Xe-loaded liquid scintillator. The liquid scintillator is enclosed inside a balloon made of thin, transparent, low-radioactivity film that we call Inner Balloon (IB). The IB, apart from guaranteeing the liquid containment, also allows to minimize the background from cosmogenic muon-spallation products and 8B solar neutrinos. Indeed these events could contribute to the total counts in the region of interest around the Q-value of the double-beta decay of 136Xe. In this paper, we present an overview of the IB and describe the various steps of its commissioning minimizing the radioactive contaminations, from the material selection, to the fabrication of the balloon and its installation inside the KamLAND detector. Finally, we show the impact of the IB on the KamLAND background as measured by the KamLAND detector itself.

There are many theories where a dark matter particle is part of a multipletwith an electrically charged state. If WIMP dark matter ($\chi^{0}$) isaccompanied by a charged excited state ($\chi^{-}$) separated by a small massdifference, it can form a stable bound state with a nucleus. In supersymmetricmodels, the $\chi^{0}$ and the $\chi^{-}$ could be the neutralino and a chargedslepton, such as the neutralino-stau degenerate model. The formation bindingprocess is expected to result in an energy deposition of {\it O}(1--10 MeV),making it suitable for detection in large liquid scintillator detectors. Wedescribe new constraints on the bound state formation with a xenon nucleususing the KamLAND-Zen 400 Phase-II dataset. In order to enlarge the searchableparameter space, all xenon isotopes in the detector were used. For a benchmarkparameter set of $m_{\chi^{0}} = 100$ GeV and $\Delta m = 10$ MeV, this studysets the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section$\langle\sigma v\rangle$ and the decay-width of $\chi^{-}$ of $2.0 \times10^{-31}$ ${\rm cm^3/s}$ and $1.1 \times 10^{-18}$ GeV, respectively (90\%confidence level).

Specialized computational chemistry packages have permanently reshaped the landscape of chemical and materials science by providing tools to support and guide experimental efforts and for the prediction of atomistic and electronic properties. In this regard, electronic structure packages have played a special role by using first-principle-driven methodologies to model complex chemical and materials processes. Over the past few decades, the rapid development of computing technologies and the tremendous increase in computational power have offered a unique chance to study complex transformations using sophisticated and predictive many-body techniques that describe correlated behavior of electrons in molecular and condensed phase systems at different levels of theory. In enabling these simulations, novel parallel algorithms have been able to take advantage of computational resources to address the polynomial scaling of electronic structure methods. In this paper, we briefly review the NWChem computational chemistry suite, including its history, design principles, parallel tools, current capabilities, outreach, and outlook.

We present a precision analysis of the ^{136}Xe two-neutrino ββ electron spectrum above 0.8 MeV, based on high-statistics data obtained with the KamLAND-Zen experiment. An improved formalism for the two-neutrino ββ rate allows us to measure the ratio of the leading and subleading 2νββ nuclear matrix elements (NMEs), ξ_{31}^{2ν}=-0.26_{-0.25}^{+0.31}. Theoretical predictions from the nuclear shell model and the majority of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) calculations are consistent with the experimental limit. However, part of the ξ_{31}^{2ν} range allowed by the QRPA is excluded by the present measurement at the 90% confidence level. Our analysis reveals that predicted ξ_{31}^{2ν} values are sensitive to the quenching of NMEs and the competing contributions from low- and high-energy states in the intermediate nucleus. Because these aspects are also at play in neutrinoless ββ decay, ξ_{31}^{2ν} provides new insights toward reliable neutrinoless ββ NMEs.

A 5-year-old, 7.9 kg castrated male Miniature Dachsund presented with heart enlargement on radiography. The dog was asymptomatic. Echocardiography revealed a tubular structure running along the posterior wall of the left atrium and connecting to the right atrium on the caudal side of the left atrium and annulus, which was presumed to be a dilated coronary sinus. After confirming a shunt between the left atrium and coronary sinus by cardiovascular catheterization, an unroofed coronary sinus was diagnosed. Open-heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass was performed through left atriotomy. The defect between the left atrium and the coronary sinus was closed by suturing. The cardiac enlargement improved after surgery. The dog was still alive 1227 days after surgery without clinical signs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our patient was initially admitted to a neighborhood hospital because of nausea and loss of appetite of 10 days' duration. The day after hospitalization, she developed skin vesicles along the first division of the trigeminal nerve, with severe lid swelling and conjunctival injection. On suspicion of meningoencephalitis caused by varicella zoster virus, antiviral therapy with vidarabine and betamethasone was started. Seventeen days later, complete ptosis and ophthalmoplegia developed in the right eye. The light reflex in the right eye was absent and anisocoria was present, with the right pupil larger than the left. Fat-suppressed enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance images showed high intensity areas in the muscle cone, cavernous sinus, and orbital optic nerve sheath. Our patient was diagnosed with orbital apex syndrome, and because of skin vesicles in the first division of the trigeminal nerve, the orbital apex syndrome was considered to be caused by herpes zoster ophthalmicus. After the patient was transferred to our hospital, prednisolone 60 mg and vidarabine antiviral therapy was started, and fever and headaches disappeared five days later. The ophthalmoplegia and optic neuritis, but not the anisocoria, gradually resolved during tapering of oral therapy. From the clinical findings and course, the cause of the orbital apex syndrome was most likely invasion of the orbital apex and cavernous sinus by the herpes virus through the trigeminal nerve ganglia.Keywords: varicella zoster virus, orbital apex syndrome, herpes zoster ophthalmicus, complete ophthalmoplegia

A total of 155 mandibular central incisors aged 12-79 years old which was chosen from the collection stored at the Department of Anatomy in Tokyo Dental College and had no opened apex, caries or restorative treatment, were examined. Samples were scanned using micro-CT HMX225 ACTIS4. Based on the sliced image data, three-dimensional structures were obtained and the volumes of enamel, dentin, and pulp cavity were measured. Regression equations for age estimation were then determined. The accuracy of age estimation equations for each region, volume ratio, and sex was assessed using the determination coefficient R.sup.2 as well as the standard errors of estimated values. The root region alone had a comparable accuracy to that of the whole tooth and the crown region had a relatively lower accuracy. In the whole tooth and the crown region, slightly higher correlations were observed for pulp/tooth volume ratios in which enamel was excluded. Females tended to have higher accuracy compared to males. The estimated age was higher in males compared to females for the same volume ratio of the pulp cavity. The highest correlation in both genders with age was observed for the volume ratio of the pulp cavity to the whole tooth excluding the enamel (males, R.sup.2 =0.67; females, R.sup.2 =0.76). The 95% confidence intervals for the population regression showed different distributions for each sex. In the 95% prediction intervals for age estimation, females tended to have narrower intervals and higher accuracy compared to males. Therefore, the use of gender-specific equations is recommended for age estimation.
