Astrophysics - Abstract
We performed two types of radiation testing on high-speed LSI chips to test their suitability for use in wideband observations by the Japanese next space VLBI mission, VSOP-2. In the total ionization dose experiment we monitored autocorrelation spectra which were taken with irradiated LSI chips and the source current at intervals up to 1,000 hours from the ionization dose, but we could not see any change of these features for the chips irradiated with dose rates expected in the VSOP-2 mission. In the single event effect experiment, we monitored the cross correlation phase and power spectra between the data from radiated and non-radiated devices, and the source current during the irradiation of heavy-ions. We observed a few tens of single event upsets as discrete delay jumps for each LSI. We estimated the occurrence rate of single events in space as between once a few days to once a month. No single event latch-up was seen in any of the LSIs. These results show that the tested LSIs have sufficient tolerance to the environment for space VLBI observations., Comment: 6 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, to appear in PASJ, Vol.59, No.6

Astrophysics - Abstract
We have combined high resolution VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) data at 1.6 and 4.8 GHz with Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) data at higher frequencies and with similar resolutions to study the spectral properties of the core of M87 with milliarcsecond resolution. The VSOP data allow a more accurate measurement of the turn-over frequency, and hence more reliable determination of associated physical parameters of the source. Comparison of the images with previously published images yields no evidence for significant motion of components in the parsec-scale jet. In addition, the brightness temperatures obtained from model-fits to the core are well below the inverse Compton limit, suggesting the radio emission we are observing is not strongly Doppler boosted. Astrophysics - Abstract
We have made a high-resolution VLBI observation of the gamma-ray loud quasar PKS 1622-297 with the HALCA spacecraft and ground radio telescopes at 5 GHz in 1998 February, almost three years after the source exhibited a spectacular GeV gamma-ray flare. The source shows an elongated structure toward the west on the parsec scale. The visibility data are well modeled by three distinct components; a bright core and two weaker jet components. Comparison with previous observations confirms that the jet components have an apparent superluminal motion up to 12.1 h^{-1}c, with the inner jet components having lower superluminal speeds. We apply the inverse Compton catastrophe model and derive a Doppler factor, \delta, of 2.45, which is somewhat lower than that of other gamma-ray loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), suggesting the source was in a more quiescent phase at the epoch of our observation. As an alternative probe of the sub-parsec scale structure, we also present the results from multi-epoch ATCA total flux monitoring, which indicate the presence of persistent intraday variability consistent with refractive interstellar scintillation. We examine the gamma-ray emission mechanism in the light of these observations., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, to appear in PASJ, Vol.58, No.1

Astronautics (General) - Abstract
Following the success of the VLBI Space Observatory Program (VSOP), a next generation space VLBI mission, VSOP-2, is currently being planned. Higher observing frequencies, cooled receivers, increased bandwidths and larger telescope diameters will result in gains in resolution and interferometer sensitivity by factors of 10 over the VSOP mission. The use of phase-referencing by fast switching between a calibrator source and the target source is now being studied as this technique allows sources 50-150 times weaker to be observed depending on the frequency band. Such a capability would greatly enhance the VSOP-2 mission. Several other enhancements to the VSOP-2 mission are also presently under investigation including the VSOP-2 spacecraft operating at the same time as a US spacecraft to form what has come to be known as the iARISE (international ARISE) mission.

Geophysics - Abstract
Following the success of the VLBI Space Observatory Program (VSOP), a next generation space VLBI mission (VSOP-2) is currently being planned. We expect the data rate of more than 1 Gbps to get more sensitivity. Here we will present: (1) How to sample the data (on board), including the radiation test results which show we can have the 10 Gbps sampler LSI which can use in space; (2) Possibility of the bit rate more than 1 Gbps to downlink the VLBI data. We studied the link budget for the wide band data transmission, and discussed the various ideas which can get more than 1 Gbps; and (3) What kind of VLBI tracking station and recording system will be expected for the VSOP-2 mission? We will present the idea of using normal radio telescopes as a tracking station, and also review the possibility of recording and processing at the tracking stations and correlators.

- Abstract
DECIGO (DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) is the planned Japanese space gravitational wave antenna, aiming to detect gravitational waves from astrophysically and cosmologically significant sources mainly between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz and thus to open a new window for gravitational wave astronomy and for the universe. DECIGO will consists of three drag-free spacecraft arranged in an equilateral triangle with 1000 km arm lengths whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry-Perot interferometer, and four units of triangular Fabry-Perot interferometers are arranged on heliocentric orbit around the sun. DECIGO is vary ambitious mission, we plan to launch DECIGO in era of 2030s after precursor satellite mission, B-DECIGO. B-DECIGO is essentially smaller version of DECIGO: B-DECIGO consists of three spacecraft arranged in an triangle with 100 km arm lengths orbiting 2000 km above the surface of the earth. It is hoped that the launch date will be late 2020s for the present.

VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometry)のミッションである。 , ASTRO-G is the successive mission of HALCA (Highly Advanced Laboratory for Communications and Astronomy), which is Space VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) mission. It will try to observe in much higher resolution than HALCA by using the phase referencing method. When we use this method, the requirement of the orbit determination accuracy is about a few cm. We are considering how to achieve this accuracy.,

宇宙研、国立天文台を中心とした、VSOP(VLBI Space Observatory Program)グループは、「はるか」衛星を利用し、世界初のスペースVLBI(Very Long Base Interferometry)プロジェクトであるVSOP計画を実現した。 VSOPはスペースミッションとして、国際的に評価され、2005年にIAA(International Academy of Astronautics)の、Laurels for Team Achievements(チーム栄誉賞)を受賞した。

The Deep Interferometric VSOP-Arecibo Survey (DIVAS) program uses space VLBI observations of a faint population of flat-spectrum sources made with the HALCA satellite and the Arecibo telescope to provide the highest possible space VLBI sensitivity at 5 GHz. The main aim of the survey is to compare statistical results on the source structures (e.g., brightness temperatures, sizes, visibilities) with results from the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) Survey, to determine whether there are systematic differences in the compact structures of sources selected from samples with limiting flux densities differing by over an order of magnitude.,

The VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) is a Japanese-led project to image radio sources at 1.6 and 5 GHz with a linear resolution three-times greater than with ground arrays at these frequencies (Hirabayashi et al. 1998). The satellite is now devoted to a survey of bright, small-diameter extra-galactic radio sources at 5 GHz, the VSOP survey. The major goals of this survey are statistical in nature: to determine the brightness temperature and approximate structure; to provide a source list for use with future space VLBI missions; and to compare radio properties with other data throughout the electro-magnetic spectrum. The current status and early results are presented.,

The phase transfer to the space VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometry)satellite HALCA and the instrument system for it on board the spacecraft aredescribed. The phase transfer, supplying an extremely stable frequency-referencesignal to spacecraft by a radio wave from ground, is one of the key technologiesnecessary for space VLBI. The phase transfer for HALCA consists of such operations as:(1)a ground station transmits a 15.3 GHz up-link signal generated from a hydrogen maser frequency standard to the spacecraft,(2)a phase-lock receiver on the spacecraft receives the 15.3 GHz signal and generates the reference signal with a frequency of 50 MHz,(3)the reference signal is supplied to the radio astronomy instruments and the local signal generator,(4)the local signal generator generates a 14.2 GHz down-link carrier, together with local frequency signals for radio astronomy receivers,(5)the 14.2 GHz down-link carrier, which is QPSK modulated by radio astronomy signals, is transmitted toward ground, and(6)the down-link carrier is received and demodulated, and two-way loop phase is measured, at the ground station. The system on board the spacecraft has been confirmed, before the launch, to satisfy the coherence condition required from the VLBI correlation. The phase transfer has operated satisfactorily for the satellite HALCA in orbit and contributed to the success of the space VLBI observations by HALCA.,

- Abstract
The phase transfer, supplying an extremely stable frequency-reference signal to spacecraft by a radio wave from ground, is one of the key technologies necessary for realizing space VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry). This paper presents the phase transfer system for the scientific satellite HALCA (the name before the launch was MUSES-B) which was launched in 1997 by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) and has become the first space VLBI satellite of the world. The phase transfer for HALCA is performed by using a two-way link, composed of a 15.3GHz ground-to-satellite link and a 14.2GHz satellite-to-ground one. A ground system for the phase transfer has been developed at the Usuda Deep Space Center of ISAS with such functions as: (1) Transmitting the up-link signal which frequency is Doppler-compensated such that the frequency becomes exactly 15.3GHz at the spacecraft, (2) receiving the downlink signal which has been transmitted from the spacecraft with the frequency of 14.2GHz keeping its phase coherent to the received up-link signal, and (3) detecting the loop phase and the two-way Doppler frequency shift from the received down-link signal. Great cares have been paid for achieving high phase stability in the design of the total system, each equippment and the circuits, of the ground station. A loop test at the Usuda station, using a satellite simulator, has shown that the ground system well satisfies the coherency requirement. For HALCA in the orbit, the phase transfer from the Usuda station has operated satisfactory, attaining phase stability necessary for the space VLBI observations under the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP).,
