Abstract

Based on the lessons learned from 9/11, the Naval Anti-Terrorism Force Protection (ATFP) program is now considering an airborne IRST as part of a family of sensors, which can be used to monitor air traffic in the vicinity of Naval facilities around the world. This IRST is intended to augment current capabilities by providing a method of detecting and tracking even low flying small aircraft using terrain features or urban canyons to mask their approach. This paper describes an Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system integrated with an eyesafe laser rangefinder (ELRF) and intended for operation from an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) with automated targeting and fire control functionality. The IRST sensor was developed under a jointly funded MDA/ONR contract with Raytheon, but the completion of the eyesafe laser rangefinder and its integration and demonstration was only accomplished recently under NAVAIR internal funding. In addition to low flying aircraft this IRST sensor must also be able to detect and track missiles launched from shipboard platforms readily found around the world, so the capability must be there to operate against a wide range of targets with large variations in their signatures. This sensor possesses the desired dynamic range for all of these applications and the passive IRST sensor participated recently in data collections for Blue Velvet 1 & 2 missions. Infrared imagery and pointing data was collected during the two events. Although the Blue Velvet (BV) target (SCUD) is the oldest and most widely deployed theater ballistic missile in the world it's emissions and reflections had never been measured during its boost phase., See also ADM202114, RTO-MP-SET-094, paper no. 9. The original surveys were performed for Navy unmanned aerial vehicle (UVA) programs and summarized in the CY2000 reports. The reports include information on both large and small sensor payloads. The presentation gives a representative view of the type of information found in the surveys., Presented at the RTO Sensors and Electronics Technology Panel (SET) Symposium held in Lisbon, Portugal, 2-3 May 2005. Abstract

To further our understanding of the growth failure in metabolic acidosis, we examined the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I and IGF-II), the IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), and the hepatic IGF mRNA and growth hormone receptor mRNA in control, pair-fed and acidotic rats. The rats in the last group were made acidotic by using ammonium chloride (1.5%) as their sole fluid intake for eight days. Metabolic acidosis was confirmed by a blood pH of 7.11 +/- 0.10 (mean +/- SD). The mean starting weights for all rats were 167.1 +/- 3.4 grams. Growth impairment was observed in the acidotic rats after one week of ammonium chloride intake. The body weights of the acidotic rats compared to those of the control rats were 155.5 +/- 18.9 g versus 222.8 +/- 9.7 g, P < 0.001; the pair-fed rats weighed 156.8 +/- 19.6 grams. All rats were bled and sacrificed on day 8. Sera and tissue were analyzed with the following results: compared to the ad libitum controls, the same IGF-I concentrations were significantly decreased in the acidotic animals (P < 0.02) as well as pair-fed controls (P < 0.005). The serum IGF-II and IGF-binding protein-3 concentrations were unchanged by acidosis or food restriction. The hepatic IGF-I mRNA was significantly reduced by acidosis (P < 0.01) and pair-feeding (P < 0.01). Compared to control, the mean hepatic IGF mRNA in acidosis was significantly lower (P < 0.01).
