4. Quantifying F and Cl concentrations in granitic melts from apatite inclusions in zircon

Apatite inclusions hosted by zircon offer a means to probe the magmatic history of granitic rocks and better constrain the volatile budgets of crystallising granitic melts. Building on recently developed F-Cl-OH partitioning models for apatite and coexisting melt, we outline an approach for estimating the melt concentrations of F and Cl from the composition of apatite inclusions in zircon, constrained by Ti-in-zircon crystallisation temperatures. The melts in equilibrium with apatite inclusions in zircon for the 'I-type' Jindabyne, Why Worry and Cobargo granitic suites of the Lachlan Orogen (eastern Australia), have Cl concentrations of 20-2880 ppm and F concentrations of 65-575 ppm. Variations in melt Cl and F concentrations between the granitic suites is attributed to differences in source compositions, specifically the relative contribution of F-rich turbiditic sediments and Cl-rich juvenile arc magmas. Within individual granitic suites, the calculated melt F and Cl concentrations decrease with magmatic differentiation and falling melt temperatures, and this appears to reflect the partitioning of Cl and F into biotite and hornblende, and into exsolving aqueous fluids. This study demonstrates that apatite-melt exchange coefficients for F, Cl and OH can be applied to apatite inclusions in zircon to quantify the F and Cl content of the melt, without additional context from the host rock samples., Author(s): Lillian A. Abstract

The trace element compositions of Hadean zircons have been used in two ways to argue for the existence of Hadean continental crust. One argument is based on low crystallization temperatures of Hadean zircons that have been determined using a novel geothermometer based on the Ti content of zircons in equilibrium with rutile. The second argument is based on using the trace element abundances in zircons to calculate their parental melt compositions, especially the rare earth elements. Here we demonstrate that zircons that grow from a melt formed by basalt differentiation at modern mid-ocean ridges cannot be unambiguously distinguished from Hadean zircons on either of these grounds. Thus, we conclude that the trace element compositions of Hadean zircons are permissive of models that do not include the generation of continental crust in the Hadean. Abstract

Background: Numerous researchers have leveraged publicly available Internet sources to publish publicly obtained data (POD) studies concerning various orthopaedic injuries in National Football League (NFL) players. Purpose: To provide a comprehensive systematic review of all POD studies regarding musculoskeletal injuries in NFL athletes and to use anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in NFL players to quantify the percentage of injuries identified by these studies. Study Design: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify all published studies utilizing POD regarding ACL injury in NFL athletes from 2000 to 2019. Data regarding player demographics were extracted from each publication. These results were compared with prospectively collected data reported by the teams' medical staff to the NFL Injury Surveillance System database linked to the League's electronic health record. An ACL "capture rate" for each article was calculated by dividing the number of ACL injuries in the POD study by the total number of ACL injuries in the NFL injury database occurring in the study period of interest. Results: A total of 42 studies were extracted that met the definition of a POD study: 28 evaluated a variety of injuries and 14 dealt specifically with ACL injuries, with 35 (83%) of the 42 studies published during or since 2015. POD studies captured a mean of 66% (range, 31%-90%) of ACL injuries reported by the teams' medical staff. This inability to capture all injury rates varied by position, with 86% capture of ACL injuries in skill athletes, 72% in midskill athletes, and 61% in linemen. POD studies captured 35% of injuries occurring during special teams play. Conclusion: The frequency of studies leveraging publicly obtained injury data in NFL players has rapidly increased since 2000. There is significant heterogeneity in the degree to which POD studies correctly identify ACL injuries from public reports. Sports medicine research relying solely on publicly obtained sources should be interpreted with an understanding of their inherent limitations and biases. Abstract

Polymict mantle xenoliths from the Bultfonrein kimberlites, South Africa, contain abundant ilmenites (30% in BD2666, 15% in JJG1414, 3% each in BD2394 and BD344). These ilmenites occur as disrupted veins or layers, coarse discrete grains, small segregations interstitial to other silicate minerals, and tiny irregular grains disseminated in the subgrains of enstatites. The vein-like ilmenite usually shows a textural zonation across the vein, in rare cases along veins. This textural zonation is coincident with chemical and oxygen isotopic variations, with the margins being finer in grain sizes and richer in incompatible elements. The chemical and isotopic compositions also vary between different occurrences of ilmenite grains. In general, the smaller grains are richer in Cr, LREE and LILE and lighter in oxygen isotopes. Thus, chemical and oxygen isotopic disequilibria are well preserved in these ilmenites, which are also seen in the silicate minerals. These features suggest that ilmenites from the polymict xenoliths formed by magmatic and/or metasomatic processes. The invasion of the Fe-Ti-Cr-rich melt with low oxygen isotopic ratio can account for the observed low bulk oxygen isotopic ratios in the polymict xenoliths. This Fe-Ti-rich melt with high ilmenite normative could be produced by melt immiscibility during the migration of an initially homogeneous high-Ti silicate melt. Keywords South Africa.
