Abstract

Agroforestry systems applicable in forestry are considered as: agricultural use in forest cultures, field protective forest belts, sowing of grass species in fast-growing energy plantations, forest farming. Good practices from Bulgaria and abroad are considered. The benefits of implementing these practices are highlighted -- ecological and economic. For example -- improvement of soil characteristics as a result of agroforestry practice, such as those in State Forest Enterprise Oryahovo, where growing poplar (Populus spp.) with agricultural crops, the soils contain C -- 1.95% and N -- 0.2%, compared to the control, which is a poplar monoculture, where C is 0.48% and N -- 0.01%. It is argued that these are good practices in forestry and should be supported by state policies in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Riparian vegetation supports high biodiversity providing many services and is, therefore, an important landscape element. Riparian ecosystems are subject to numerous pressures leading to population decline and genetic erosion of riparian plants. This may have cascading effects at various ecosystem levels, including decreasing ecosystem services, so identifying the current status of genetic diversity of riparian tree species is vital to improve the effectiveness of restoration efforts. We aimed to elicit expert views on the status and importance of genetic diversity of tree species, and conservation needs across European riparian ecosystems. Sharing of such information among researchers, managers and policymakers has the potential to enhance ecological restoration and management of riparian ecosystems. We identified experts in riparian genetic resources conservation and management across Europe. These included stakeholders with different perspectives, ranging from researchers to practitioners. We designed a set of questionnaires where our identified experts were asked to answer questions related to the status and conservation of genetic diversity of riparian tree species in their respective countries. Specifically, we asked about societal awareness, legislative tools, good practices and conservation or restoration projects accounting for intraspecific genetic diversity and differentiation of tree species in riparian ecosystems. Questionnaire responses were analysed and discussed in light of the scientific literature to define needs and priorities related to the management and conservation of genetic diversity of riparian tree species. The experts recognized that a combination of in situ and ex situ measures and/or integrative conservation of riparian ecosystems is the most appropriate option for conserving the genetic diversity of riparian tree species. Abstract

Riparian zones are the paragon of transitional ecosystems, providing critical habitat and ecosystem services that are especially threatened by global change. Following consultation with experts, 10 key challenges were identified to be addressed for riparian vegetation science and management improvement: (1) Create a distinct scientific community by establishing stronger bridges between disciplines; (2) Make riparian vegetation more visible and appreciated in society and policies; (3) Improve knowledge regarding biodiversity-ecosystem functioning links; (4) Manage spatial scale and context-based issues; (5) Improve knowledge on social dimensions of riparian vegetation; (6) Anticipate responses to emergent issues and future trajectories; (7) Enhance tools to quantify and prioritize ecosystem services; (8) Improve numerical modeling and simulation tools; (9) Calibrate methods and increase data availability for better indicators and monitoring practices and transferability; and (10) Undertake scientific validation of best management practices. These challenges are discussed and critiqued here, to guide future research into riparian vegetation. Abstract

1. Riparian zones are vital areas of interaction between land and rivers and are often degraded by several pressures such as urbanisation, intensive agriculture and river engineering works. 2. This policy brief provides five key policy messages and recommendations to be considered by policy-makers, scientists, managers, and stakeholders to enhance riparian zone management. 3. Adopting an integrated socio-economic and environmentally dynamic view will ensure the sustainable management of riparian zones. 4. In light of climate change, it is critically important to conserve and/or restore the ecological integrity of riparian zones. 5. European Union Directives and national-scale legislation and regulations need updating to ensure coordinated implementation of riparian zone-related policies. 6. Stakeholder knowledge exchange, policy co-creation and adaptive management are key to enhancing riparian zone functions.

Abstract

Specific localities of Periploca graeca (Silk vine) are reported for the territory of Aydemir and Vetren islands (Danube floristic region). These new records are very important for the following reasons: the Silk vine is part of the nature vegetation of the islands and confirms its role of diagnostic species for the NATURA 2000 habitat 91E0; the present study found some preferences of the Silk vine to the soil conditions. 22. Method for Ecological Risk Assessment of the Invasive Alien Species Impatiens Glandulifera Royle in Bulgaria

Abstract

The aim of the present study is based on the existing experience to apply methodology for environmental risk assessment of Hymalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera), which will be useful for management and control of the distribution and impact of this invasive alien species in Bulgaria. The adapted methodology for Impatiens glandulifera’s risk assessment is based on the “Methodology for risk assessment of invasive alien species” developed by the Bulgarian Executive Environment Agency and on “The South Australia’s Weed Risk Management System protocol”. The object of the risk assessment is an experimental section of the Iskar river gorge (“Gorge”) close to the village of Kokalyane, Pancharevo municipality, Sofia-city district. The area of the Gorge is 3 km² and the study area represent approximately 3.3% of it or 0.1 km². Following the Methodology the assessment was done independently by 7 experts representatives of the scientific institutions, governmental and local organizations. The scores of the experts’ evaluation based on the questionnaires completed by them are averaged and applied for the Final phase of Risk assessment - Determing priorities. The risk assessment of the invasive alien species Impatiens glandulifera in the experimental area showed that at the present stage the level of risk of its spread and impact is medium and requires a set of measures, including information and publicity for the purpose of prevention, reduction of the population in case of predominant presence of the species or the strategic function of its localities and conducting regular monitoring to trace the changes in the invasiveness of the species. Due to the significant distribution along the river of single individuals of the Hymalayan balsam, it is impossible to completely destroy the species at once. It is achievable as a immediate result in the studied area this exotic plant to be limited to an assectator, as it contributes to the enrichment of bee grazing in the area. The methodology used in the Weed Risk Management Guide is largely applicable, easy and convenient for studies that are related to the risk assessment of invasive alien species.

Abstract

Agroforestry systems are methods of land use in which at the same plot are intentionally combined long-term cultivation of trees with crops and/or grazing livestock. At the same time, agroforestry can be a good method and opportunity to improve soil quality where it is practiced. Plantations with agroforestry practices can be used for preserving and enhancing soil fertility. The intensive poplar plantations established alongside the Danube River for rapid wood production can be well combined with the application of agroforestry practices at the early stage of the tree growth. The aim of this study was to compare plantations, in which different agroforestry practices were applied with relation to their main soil characteristics - the content of total carbon and nitrogen. The comparative approach and standard methods were used. Also, we used the method of Kononova/Balchikova to define humus composition and stabilising of organic matter in these alluvial soils (Alluvial Fluvisols). The analyses were carried out in plantations of Populus sp. along the Danube River near Oryahovo and Kozloduy. The obtained results showed better indicators for C% (1.92 ÷ 0.96) and N% (0.07 ÷ 0.05) in agroforestry systems compared to the control (C% 0.48 and N% 0.01). The fractional composition of humus showed a higher value of humic to fulvic acids in agroforestry systems (Ch/Cf = 0.27 ÷ 0.67) with respect to those systems where these practices were not applied (Cx/Cf = 0.17). This shows better opportunities for agroforestry as a method of land use capable of preserving and improving soil fertility in riparian forests. 27. The Effect of Grazing on Old Oak Forests from Eastern Rhodopes Mountains, Bulgaria.

Abstract

The present study focuses on the old oak forests within the territory of Krumovgrad State Forestry Unit (SFU), located in the central part of the Eastern Rhodopes Mountains. Field measurements were performed in both abandoned and ongoing pens, covered by Quercus petraea and Quercus frainetto dominated forests with ages ranging between 120-130 years. The aim of the study was to identify the consequences of long-term practiced grazing in old oak forests (forest pastures) after their abandonment as well as the perspectives in terms of their preservation, restoration, regeneration and future maintenance. The study confirmed the negative effect of intensive grazing over old oak forests within the territory of SFU Krumovgrad, related with soil exhaustion and erosion, suppression of seeds production/successful regeneration and severe forest degradation. However, it also revealed the preserved valuable genotypes, forest structures and regeneration potential of these forests. Furthermore, it was proved that during the last 20-30 years, since grazing had been abandoned or not intensively practiced, forests’ health condition have improved, canopy closure has increased and old stands were able to successfully regenerate on their own. In addition, significant similarities between the characteristics of studied old oak forests and those of old-growth forests were observed. This could reasonably justify some old oak forests’ areas within the SFU Krumovgrad managed territory to be protected from commercial logging by declaring them old-growth forests that are part of Natura 2000 network or covering them by the upcoming Forest Stewardship Certification. Abstract

In Bulgaria, regeneration of beech forests is implemented through naturally growing seedlings. There is an increase in the damages done to the soil, remaining trees and seedlings after wood extraction and timber harvesting due to the increased implementation of mechanization processes. The mechanical injuries on the stems of young seedlings are entrance for pathogenic fungi attacks, timber decay or inferior quality that could compromise the whole process of regeneration. The mechanized extraction by forwarders resulted in damages to the soil as well as the root system of the remaining mature trees. In beech forests located in Berkovitsa State Forestry, nine round test stands (area of 3.14 m2), were situated in a grid, and seedlings were classified by measurement of height and quality characteristics before and after harvesting. After harvesting, the seedlings were classified according to the degree of damages and vitality. Wounded seedlings with symptoms of necrotic disease were collected and Neonectria coccinea was established as a pathogenic causer of necrotic disease. Certain physical parameters (bulk density, particle density, total porosity) were investigated. Deviations in the bulk density and total porosity of the soil were ascertained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Forest shelter belts have represented and continue to represent a subject of maximum interest in Romania and Bulgaria. This fact is caused by their importance in diminishing the effects of drought, protecting agricultural fields as well as communication means or other social and economic objectives in the conditions of climatic changes. Furthermore, Romania and Bulgaria both have a rich and long lasting experience in regard with creating forest shelter belts, proved by the creation in 1906 of the first scientific studies and plans (with a focus on diminishing drought). A series of coherent forest shelter belt systems were also realized before the 1940s (in Baragan, Dobruja). The existence of previous forest shelter belts has allowed the realization of numerous studies and investigations together with the organization of many actions and experience exchanges between Romania and Bulgaria. The present paper presents in detail the stages of developing this concept and the creation of forest shelter belts in the two above mentioned countries, together with some technical aspects resulted based on investigations realized in previous forest shelter belts. The present forest shelter belts are storing valuable scientific information, representing the basis for substantiating forest shelter belts with optimal structures, properly situated and with maximum protection effects. Abstract

Chestnut forests in the Belasitsa Mountain region of southwest Bulgaria were traditionally intensively managed as orchard-like stands for nut production. More recently, management intensity has been sharply reduced as a result of rural abandonment, which combined with the effects of chestnut blight has led to marked structural changes in these forests. The focus of this paper is on the seed-based regeneration potential and seedling survival of chestnut in mixed stands managed over the past 15 years. Results suggest that management of stands under a high-forest system is appropriate, and regeneration from seed has advantages over coppicing if competing species can be controlled. An investigation into "sanitation cutting" performed since the 1990s shows that this had not a successful response to blight infestations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Riparian ecosystems are subject to numerous pressures leading to population decline and genetic erosion of riparian plants. This may have cascading effects at various ecosystem levels, including decreasing ecosystem services, so identifying the current status of genetic diversity of riparian tree species is vital to improve the effectiveness of restoration efforts. We aimed to elicit expert views on the status and importance of genetic diversity of tree species, and conservation needs across European riparian ecosystems. Sharing of such information among researchers, managers and policymakers has the potential to enhance ecological restoration and management of riparian ecosystems. We identified experts in riparian genetic resources conservation and management across Europe. These included stakeholders with different perspectives, ranging from researchers to practitioners. We designed a set of questionnaires where our identified experts were asked to answer questions related to the status and conservation of genetic diversity of riparian tree species in their respective countries. Specifically, we asked about societal awareness, legislative tools, good practices and conservation or restoration projects accounting for intraspecific genetic diversity and differentiation of tree species in riparian ecosystems. Questionnaire responses were analysed and discussed in light of the scientific literature to define needs and priorities related to the management and conservation of genetic diversity of riparian tree species. The experts recognized that a combination of in situ and ex situ measures and/or integrative conservation of riparian ecosystems is the most appropriate option for conserving the genetic diversity of riparian tree species. Simultaneous application of conservation measures at the level of priority species, identified by experts, and protection of riparian areas are required. Synthesis and applications. This study revealed the importance of recognizing the ecological processes that shape the genetic diversity of riparian tree species in hydrographic networks (dendritic spatial configuration, specific patterns of gene flow among riparian populations, fragmentation of river by dams) but also the need to overcome socio-economic barriers, such as lack of policy priority, deficiency in funding and weak legislation framework., The work leading to this paper was developed within the COST Action (CA16208)—CONVERGES (Knowledge Conversion for Enhancing Management of European Riparian Ecosystems and Services), supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology; www.cost.eu) and by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union.
